Comprehensive evaluation of the impact of CuO nanoparticles on nitrogen transformation in the coastal aquaculture area

Caixia Wang,Haikun Zhang,Pengyuan Liu,Defang Li,Qiusheng Zheng,Xiaoke Hu

CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are increasingly used in marine antifouling paints and as an antimicrobial antifouling agent in aquaculture industry , thus greatly increasing the probability of their release into the coastal aquaculture environments. With the wide application of CuO NPs, their potential environmental impact is currently highly topical focus of concern. In this study, the short term (7 days) and long term (35 days) effect of CuO NPs on the nitrogen transformation of sediment in the coastal aquaculture area were investigated. It was demonstrated that the addition of CuO NPs could lead to the increase in ammonium and decrease in nitrate concentration after a long-term exposure. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDA) release assays and NADH detection suggested that CuO NPs could significantly inhibit the viability of bacteria. Metagenomic results further indicated that CuO NPs could obviously impact the functional gene and metabolic enzymes related to nitrogen metabolic pathway and glycolysis pathway which confirmed the inhibitory impact of CuO NPs on nitrogen transformation. Overall, this study highlights the impact of CuO NPs on the nitrogen transformation in the sediment of coastal aquaculture area and reveals the release of CuO NPs should be controlled because of their potential for eutrophication .

Integration of ultrafine CuO nanoparticles with two-dimensional MOFs for enhanced electrochemical CO2 reduction to ethylene

Linlin Wang,Xin Li,Leiduan Hao,Song Hong,Alex W. Robertson,Zhenyu Sun

To facilitate the electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) to fuels and valuable chemicals, the development of active, low cost, and selective catalysts is crucial. We report a novel ECR catalyst consisting of CuO nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 1.4 to 3.3 nm anchored on Cu metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) nanosheets obtained through a one-step facile solvothermal method. The nanocomposites provide multiple sites for efficient ambient ECR, delivering an average C 2 H 4 faradaic efficiency (FE) of ~50.0% at –1.1 V (referred to the reversible hydrogen electrode) in 0.1 mol/L aqueous KHCO 3 using a two-compartment cell, in stark contrast to a C 2 H 4 FE of 25.5% and 37.6% over individual CuO and Cu-MOF respectively, also surpassing most newly reported Cu-based materials under similar cathodic voltages. The C 2 H 4 FE remains at over 45.0% even after 10.0 h of successive polarization. Also, a ~7.0 mA cm −2 C 2 H 4 partial geometric current density and 27.7% half-cell C 2 H 4 power conversion efficiency are achieved. The good electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the interface between CuO and Cu-MOF, with accessible metallic moieties and the unique two-dimensional structure of the Cu-MOF enhancing the adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. This finding offers a simple avenue to upgrading CO 2 to value-added hydrocarbons by rational design of MOF-based composites.

Engineering the band structure of CuO via decoration with AgBr to enhance its photocatalytic degradation performance

Yasin Umsalama Abuelgasim Abubakr,Ahmed Md. Maruf,Zhang Juan,Jia Zhixin,Guo Tianyu,Zhao Ruihua,Shi Jiahui,Du Jianping

Design and development of high-effective photocatalysts to remove multiple organic pollutants are a great challenge. Herein, the band structure of CuO is regulated by constructing the heterostructures between AgBr and CuO, which is realized by controlling hybrid morphologies. The as-prepared AgBr/CuO material consists of CuO nanoflakes and AgBr nanoparticles. Notably, AgBr nanoparticles are adhering on the surface of CuO nanosheets, which favors the formation of heterojunction with point to plane contact and fasten electron transfer. The photocatalytic results show that the AgBr/CuO photocatalyst, prepared by using the 0.1 mol AgNO 3 and KBr as raw materials, presents superior photodegradation activity toward degradation of multi-pollutants with dye concentration of 15 mg L −1 and pH = 7. The methyl violet removal rate reaches 98% within 60 min in the present of 0.1 g catalyst under visible light, and rhodamine B and methyl blue are degraded to 98 and 78% within 90 min. The radical trapping tests prove that photogenerated superoxide radicals (∙O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) act as the main active species in photodegradation of MV. The result indicates that point to plane-contacted heterostructure of AgBr/CuO material plays a key role and it has potential application in the environment remediation. Graphical abstract

The Synthesis of Glycerol Carbonate from Glycerol and Carbon Dioxide over Supported CuO-Based Nanoparticle Catalyst

Jassim Mohamed Hamed Al-Kurdhani,Huajun Wang

A series of supported CuO-based nanoparticle catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method and used for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol and CO2in the presence of 2-cyanopyridine as a dehydrant and DMF as a solvent. The effects of supports (activated alumina, silicon dioxide, graphene oxide, graphene, and activated carbon), CuO loading amount, calcination temperature, and reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of the catalyst were investigated in detail. XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, and CO2-TPD were used for the characterization of the prepared catalysts. It is found that CuO/Al2O3shows a higher catalytic activity, which depends on the CuO loading amount and calcination temperature. The surface area and number of basic sites of the catalyst exhibit a crucial effect on the catalytic activity of CuO/Al2O3. Furthermore, there is a synergistic effect between the catalyst and 2-cyanopyridine where the former has a higher activation ability for glycerol and the latter acts not only as a dehydrant, but also as a promoter for CO2activation. Recycling experiments reveal that this catalyst can be reused for at least five cycles without any inactivation. Based on the experiment results and FTIR characterization, a possible reaction mechanism for the carbonylation of glycerol and CO2is proposed. Keywords:glycerol;glycerol carbonate;carbon dioxide;2-cyanopyridine;CuO/Al2O3

Multifunctional Ag-coated CuO microbowl arrays for highly efficient, ultrasensitive, and recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Tingting Meng,Meirong Shi,Yingcen Guo,Huichao Wang,Nuo Fu,Zhiping Liu,Bo Huang,Chao Lei,Xiaoyu Su,Bo Peng,Ziwei Deng

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been demonstrated to be an ultrasensitive and real-time analysis technique for detection of analytes with its specific fingerprint-identification feature. However, most traditional SERS-active substrates are suffering from their high expense, intricate fabrication processes and non-recyclability, which seriously hinder the applicable universality of SERS analytical technique. Thus, it is highly desired to develop highly sensitive SERS-active substrates that can be recovered in an easy way. Herein, we present a facile and inexpensive approach for fabrication of photocatalytically active Ag-coated CuO (denoted as CuO@Ag) microbowl array substrate, applicable for the highly efficient, ultrasensitive, and recyclable SERS detection. In this approach, a multifunctional CuO@Ag microbowl array is achieved based on the pre-synthesis of a quasi-2D CuO microbowl array by employing the colloidal lithography on Cu foil combined with the subsequent chemical oxidation reaction, and followed by the sputtering deposition of Ag layer on the CuO microbowl array. Importantly, this CuO@Ag microbowl array can serve as SERS-active substrate with extra advantageous feature of excellent photocatalytic activity , which enables self-degradation of analytes after the SERS-detection under visible light illumination. Remarkably, this allows for recyclable SERS detection. In the detection of model probe molecules, e.g., methylene blue (LOD: 1.3 × 10 −16 M) and Aflatoxin B 1 (LOD: 6.5 × 10 − 15 M) , approximate femtomolar level can be reached. Impressively, this substrate allows multi-detection without compromising the SERS activity. The present research provides a new and cost-effective strategy for synthesizing recyclable SERS-active substrates, which suggests plausible ways in the design of multi-functional SERS-active substrates.

Non-volatile ternary memristors based on a polymer containing a carbazole donor with CuO NPs embedded

Feng Dou,Xiaofeng Zhao,Wanying Zhang,Yingna Zhang,Meng Gao,Jiangshan Chen,Shuhong Wang,Cheng Wang

The limited capacity of binary memory may not meet the requirements of future information storage; hence, multilevel memory is widely studied. Herein, a donor–acceptor-type polymer poly[2,7-9-(heptadecan-9-yl)-9H-carbazole-alt-7H-benzimidazo[2,1-a]benz[de]isoquinolin-7-one] (PCz–BMBI) was synthesized using the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction and characterized. The organic resistive random access memory (ORRAM) devices with a non-volatile ternary memory behavior, based on PCz–BMBI and PCz–BMBI:CuO NP active layers, were fabricated using the spin-coating technique. The I–V characteristics of the devices were studied, and the effect of the embedding ratio of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) on the memory performance of the devices was discussed. The results indicate that the switching ratios of all devices with CuO NPs embedded were improved, and their first threshold voltages were lowered. Furthermore, the devices fabricated with an embedding ratio of 7 wt% CuO NPs exhibited optimal memory performance with a current ratio of ON2/ON1/OFF (105.3 : 102.3 : 1) and low threshold voltages (−0.50 V/−1.60 V). This work provides a new route for multi-level storage materials and new ideas for the application of CuO NPs in the field of information storage.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by mesoporous CuO nanocage for organic pollutants degradation via a singlet oxygen-dominated pathway

Xiurong Zhu,Yue Zhang,Wei Yan,Shengjiong Yang,Kun Wu,Gen Wang,Pengkang Jin,Jing Wei

Cupric oxide (CuO) is reported to be an effective catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation process for degrading refractory organic pollutants . In this work, mesoporous CuO nanocage was prepared via calcination of metal-phenolic coordination polymer (Cu-TA). The CuO nanocage exhibited high catalytic activity for PMS activation to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) with a high kinetic rate constant (0.17 min −1 ). The high catalytic activity was attributed to the unique hollow mesoporous structure which renders high specific surface area, high-level exposure of active sites and efficient mass diffusion of pollutants and PMS. Systematic evaluation on BPA removal under different experimental conditions indicated that the mesoporous CuO nanocage was highly active in a wide pH range and resistant to inorganic ions and background organic constituents. Electron paramagnetic resonance tests and chemical scavenging experiments implied that the degradation of BPA was mainly ascribed to singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) with a small contribution from hydroxyl radicals (OH • ). A redox cycle of surface Cu(II)-Cu(I)-Cu(II) was responsible for the production of reactive oxygen species (i.e., 1 O 2 and OH • ). The possible degradation pathway of BPA was proposed according to the intermediates (such as hydroxylated BPA, quinones , phenol, etc.) identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-Quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometer . This work provides a new prospect for engineering the nanostructure of CuO catalyst to maximize its catalytic activity for water purification .

Highly sensitive nonenzymetic glucose sensing platform based on MOF-derived multivalent Cu/Cu2O/CuO/C nanocomposites

Li Fangyuan,Yao Niu,Yuan Huiyu,Cui Junyan,Jia Quanli

The redox properties of electrode materials play a vital role in electrochemical performance. Fabrication of electrode materials with multiple oxidation species is highly desired for ultrasensitive glucose sensing. Herein, multivalent Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO/C (Cu/C) nanocomposites were successfully prepared for non-enzymatic glucose sensing by in situ pyrolysis of Cu metal-organic framework (Cu 3 (BTC) 2 ·3H 2 O, Cu-BTC) at a critical temperature. Structure characterizations showed that the nanocomposites maintained the original morphology of Cu-BTC crystals and exhibited mesoporous structures. Meanwhile, multiple Cu species containing Cu, Cu 2 O and CuO were generated simultaneously, which were tightly pinned on the ligand-derived carbon layers. Thus, under the synergistic effect of multivalent Cu species, mesoporous structure and intense interface contact, the sensing platforms based on Cu/C nanocomposites exhibited good glucose detection performance with a wide linear range of 0.005-2.0 mM, ultrasensitivity of 147.65 μA mM -1 cm -2 , low detection limit of 6.31 μM (S/N = 3), and favorable anti-interference properties and stability. Especially, the Cu/C sensing platform showed excellent recoveries of glucose when used to monitor glucose in real sample of honey. The good electrochemical activities of Cu/C nanocomposites render them promising candidates for sensors and other applications. Graphical abstract

Modulating electronic Metal–Support interactions of Pt-CuO/CeO2 catalyst via quenching to optimize catalytic activity

Shuaiqi Zhao,Jiajin Lin,Wenqiang Gong,Aihua Xu,Xiaoxia Li,Yongcai Qiu

Pt-based catalysts are one of the most extensively used heterogeneous catalysts for the degradation of pollutants, and regulating electron-metal-support interaction (EMSI) is an efficient strategy to enhance the performance of Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we introduced a quenching technique for regulating the EMSI of Pt-CuO/CeO 2 catalysts to significantly boost its CO catalytic activity. The EMSI optimized by quenching was determined to promote the electron redistribution between Pt and CuO/CeO 2 via Cu–O-Pt structure, thus forming more electron-rich Pt species and enhancing the surface oxygen species activity. From comprehensive characterization investigations, we confirmed that the superior activity arouse from the moderate Pt 0 /Pt 2+ ratio, in which CO molecules were preferentially adsorbed on the electron-rich Pt sites and reacted with active oxygen species from PtO x or CuO/CeO 2 , accelerating the whole CO catalytic process. Our finding provided a new inspiration to control EMSI of Pt-based catalysts and widened the application of quenching chemistry in heterogeneous catalysis.

Effect of CuO–ZnO catalyst layer on proton-conducting electrochemical cell reactor for CO2 reduction reaction

Yanhong Zhang,Hu Bai,Jiaming Chu,Haiyang Lan,Qi Zhou,Zixian Wang,Weitao Jin,Juan Zhou

A catalyst layer is coated on the fuel electrode in a proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis cell reactor, which can optimize electrochemical performance and expand the application range of the reactor. In this work, CuO–ZnO catalyst is prepared by oxalate co-precipitation method and combined with a single cell to obtain a reactor with the structure of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) ǀ BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) ǀ NiO-BZCYYb (active layer) ǀ NiO-BZCYYb (support layer) | CuO–ZnO (catalyst layer). The electrolysis current density of this reactor with humid air as oxidant and 20%CO 2 –80%H 2 as fuel is 2751 mA cm −2 under 1.3 V at 750 °C. It operates steadily for 138 h under 1.3 V electrolysis at 650 °C, which is better than the reactor without a catalyst layer under this condition. Additionally, CO and CH 4 are detected in the exhaust gas on the fuel electrode side, and the CO selectivity reaches over 90% at 750-550 °C.

Influence of CuO addition on the sintering temperature and giant dielectric properties of (In0.5Nb0.5)0.05Ti0.95O2 ceramics

Wentao Hao,Panpan Xu,Li Sun,Ensi Cao

Co-doped TiO 2 ceramics exhibit great potential as high-performance giant dielectric materials. However, their excessively high sintering temperature renders them unsuitable for economical industrial production. The giant permittivity of these ceramics is closely correlated with the concentration of Ti 3+ ions present. Adding a sintering aid to the ceramics is an effective method to reduce the sintering temperature. CuO, a common sintering aid, not only reduces the sintering temperature but also potentially enhances the Ti 3+ ions concentration through the multivalence of Cu element, further optimizing their giant dielectric properties. Therefore, the effects of CuO addition on the sintering condition, microstructure, and dielectric properties of In and Nb co-doped TiO 2 ceramics were investigated. The results indicate that CuO effectively lowers the sintering temperature of the ceramics. However, the presence of a large number of Cu +  ions inhibits the formation of Ti 3+ ions, resulting in the disappearance of their giant dielectric properties. Upon annealing at 1150 °C for 2 h in air, the Ti 3+ ions concentration significantly increases in the ceramics, consequently restoring their giant dielectric properties. Additionally, a new dielectric relaxation appears around 100 kHz, likely arising from the conductivity difference between the shallow layers and cores of grains induced by annealing. Furthermore, annealing enhances the grain boundary resistance, thereby reducing the low-frequency dielectric loss of the ceramics.

CuO and TiO2 particles generated more stable and stronger EPFRs in dark than under UV-irradiation

Ziyu Zhao,Meixuan Wu,Dandan Zhou,Quan Chen,Hao Li,Di Lang,Bo Pan,Baoshan Xing

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EFPRs) have recently attracted a great deal of research attention because of their significant toxicity and ubiquitous occurrence in the environment. The information is still very limited on how to estimate the intensity of EPFRs under ambient circumstances. This study is designed to specifically compare EPFRs generation during catechol degradation in dark and UV light irradiation. CuO and TiO 2 were selected as model metal oxides to coat on silica at 1% CuO has a large electron exchange capacity, which may mediate catechol degradation in dark, while TiO 2 possesses strong photocatalytic property and could accelerate catechol degradation under UV light. Under UV light irradiation, EPFRs were generated very quickly and reached the maximum value in 4 d, which was related to the photocatalytic property of the particle. However, these EPFRs dissipated quickly in 14 d. On the contrary, the intensities of EPFRs generated in dark were 2 times higher, and stabled for over 2 months. Therefore, the environmental impacts of EPFRs in dark may be widespread and long-lasting, which should be monitored more carefully. It should be noted that for CuO-coated silica, a significant amount of EPFRs (20% of the maximum) survived the UV-light irradiation and stabled during the experimental period (45 d). Stronger EPFRs were associated with more abundant dimer structures, suggesting the dimer structures were related to EPFRs formation during catechol degradation. Monitoring the generation of dimer structures in the degradation of organic chemicals may provide useful information to estimate EPFRs generation and risks.
