Friction and Wear Behaviors of PEEK/h-BN/SCF Composites Under Dry and Starved Oil Lubrications

Zhe Tong,Xinghao Song,Wenxing Lei,Yajun Zhang,Jiaojiao Li,Li Zhao

The incorporation of various types of fillers is critical to enhancing the starved oil lubrication performance of PEEK matrix composites. In this work, PEEK composites reinforced with h-BN and SCFs were fabricated via a hot-pressing method, and the friction and wear behaviors under dry sliding and starved oil lubrication were systematically investigated. Surface oil wettability and Vickers hardness were characterized, and tribological tests were conducted on a ball-on-disk reciprocating tribometer. Worn surface topography and wear mechanisms were elucidated through laser scanning confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that h-BN effectively reduces the friction coefficient through its solid lubrication effect, while SCFs significantly improve the hardness and load-bearing capacity of the PEEK matrix. Under dry sliding conditions, the PEEK composite containing h-BN and SCFs achieves the lowest wear rate of 10.3 × 10−5mm3/(N·m), which is 74.6% lower than that of pure PEEK, indicating a synergistic anti-wear effect. Under starved oil lubrication, PEEK/h-BN maintains the smoothest and lowest friction, and the presence of SCFs further improves wear resistance of PEEK composites despite a slight increase in friction. In addition, the fillers’ incorporation reduces the surface oil wettability of the PEEK composites; the dominant wear mechanism hence transforms from severe adhesive wear and plastic deformation in pure PEEK to mild abrasive wear.

Decorating titania with ultrasmall UiO-66-H crystallites enables quantitative photocatalytic oxidation of methane to oxygenates

Fang Geqian,Alhajjar Nour,Yu Wenjun,Marinova Maya,Ben Tayeb Karima,Lin Jian,Roland Thomas,Simon Pardis,De Waele Vincent,Ordomsky Vitaly V.,Khodakov Andrei Y.

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of methane to liquid oxygenates under ambient conditions remains challenging due to the inert C–H bond and propensity for over-oxidation. Controlling carrier transfer and reactive oxygen species is therefore essential to the selective methane photooxidation. Ultrasmall zirconium metal–organic framework (UiO-66-H) nanocrystals in situ grown on titania form a heterojunction that promotes efficient charge separation and tunes the interfacial band alignment. Comprehensive experiments and characterization reveal that this heterojunction precisely regulates • OH and • OOH generation, enabling controlled, radical-mediated oxidation of methane with a competitive oxygenate yield and nearly 100% selectivity at room temperature using air as an oxidant. In this work, ultrasmall metal–organic framework–semiconductor heterojunctions with a built-in electric field provide an effective route for developing efficient, low-cost photocatalysts for methane chemical valorization under mild, solar-driven conditions.

Enhanced Water Resistance in Methane-Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx over In@H-Beta/Fe2O3 Catalyst

Xu Pan,Jiangkun Xie,Mingze Jiao,Liang Shan,Hongyuan Qi,Wenjun Huang,Zan Qu,Naiqiang Yan,Haomiao Xu

Methane selective catalytic reduction (CH4-SCR) represents a promising strategy for nitrogen oxides (NOx) abatement, yet its practical application is hindered by catalyst deactivation in the presence of water, caused by competitive adsorption on acid sites and irreversible hydroxylation of active metal species. In this study, we developed a dual-functional In@H-Beta/Fe2O3 catalyst through sequential ion-exchange and impregnation. This architecture confines indium species within the channels of H-Beta zeolite, while Fe2O3 nanoparticles are dispersed on the external surface, creating a synergistic system featuring a hydrophobic layer and strong Fe–O–In interfacial interactions. Under 5% H2O conditions, the optimized catalyst achieves 85% NOx conversion (vs 40% for conventional In@H-Beta). The enhanced water resistance is attributed to two factors: first, Fe2O3 establishes a physical barrier that protects acid sites and stabilizes InO+ active sites via Fe–O–In bonding, thereby inhibiting hydroxylation; second, strong interfacial Fe–O–In interactions further stabilize InO+ active sites against aqueous deactivation. Additionally, the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycle is proposed to facilitate O2 activation. In situ DRIFTS studies under 5% H2O confirm effective CH4 activation, as indicated by markedly more intense C–H stretching bands compared with In@H-Beta. The reaction pathway involves NO activation over Brønsted acid sites to form nitrate species, and CH4 activation on InO+ sites generating methyl radicals, which subsequently participate in NOx reduction. This work offers a new design strategy for developing highly active and water-tolerant CH4-SCR catalysts suitable for industrial flue gas treatment.

Molecular Basis of Regioselective Bridgehead C(sp3)–H Bond Hydroxylation by P450 Peroxygenase in Bicyclomycin Biosynthesis

Jun-Bin He,Lian Wu,Wenli Yuan,Hai-Xue Pan,Binju Wang,Gong-Li Tang

Achieving highly regioselective C–H bond functionalization at the bridgehead carbon of a single molecule is a fascinating, yet formidable challenge. BcmD, a P450 enzyme, catalyzes the regioselective hydroxylation at the sp3-hybridized bridgehead carbon of the bicyclo[4.2.2]piperazinedione ring scaffold during bicyclomycin biosynthesis. Herein, we provide mechanistic details of BcmD to understand its substrate binding and the origin of its regioselectivity. The high-resolution structure of SoBcmD from Streptomyces ossamyceticus in complex with its natural substrate, together with site-directed mutagenesis and computational simulations, reveals that the precise substrate positioning, enabled by specific hydrogen-bonding and hydrophobic interactions with crucial residues, determines the regioselectivity. Intriguingly, we identify SoBcmD as a peroxygenase that could utilize H2O2 as an oxidant to catalyze regioselective hydroxylation. Mechanistic analysis indicates that H2O2 activation in SoBcmD involves a homolytic cleavage process, mediated by a hydrogen-bonding network comprising residues T277, A273, and the substrate. Furthermore, structure-based channel analysis and mutagenesis demonstrate that the I157V mutant exhibits significantly enhanced peroxygenase activity. These findings advance our understanding of regioselectivity control in BcmD and provide valuable guidance for engineering P450 peroxygenases for the C–H bond activation at the chemically challenging bridgehead carbon sites.

Performance and mechanism of sulfadiazine degradation in UV/Fe2+/H₂O₂ system enhanced by chelating agents

Haoyi Xu,Xiaoning Deng,Ying Zhang,Yuwei Pan

Chelating agents significantly enhanced SDZ degradation in UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system. • The CA-enhanced systems operate efficiently across pH 3–8. • OH was the dominant reactive species, O₂· − and 1 O₂ played minor roles in SDZ removal. • Degradation pathways produced intermediates with lower toxicity than SDZ. • The system showed broad-spectrum reactivity and stability in natural freshwater. Antibiotics, widely detected in aquatic environments, pose significant threats to ecosystems and human health due to their recalcitrance in conventional wastewater treatment processes. This study systematically investigated the enhancement effects and mechanisms of three chelating agents (CAs) including NTA, EDTA and EDDS on sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation in the UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system. Results showed that CAs significantly improved SDZ removal efficiency by complexing iron ions, promoting Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling thereby enhancing photo-induced Fenton reactions. The NTA/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system exhibited the highest performance, achieving 90.5% SDZ removal within 20 min, followed by EDTA (90.1%) and EDDS (88.7%) and without CAs (<35%). The CAs/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system maintained high efficiency over a broad pH range (3–8), overcoming the pH limitation of traditional UV-Fenton processes. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments confirmed ·OH was the dominant reactive oxygen species and O₂· − and 1 O₂ also played minor roles. Degradation pathways of SDZ included ·OH oxidation, S N bond cleavage, and ring-opening reactions, producing intermediates with lower toxicity than SDZ. Meanwhile, the CAs/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system could effectively remove various antibiotics (e.g., sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline) and maintain stability in the presence of inorganic anions and humic acid. Moreover, the CAs/UV/Fe 2+ /H₂O₂ system performed well in natural fresh water matrices, highlighting its practical application potential for antibiotic-contaminated water treatment. Langmuir-Hinshelwood pathway enables 1000-h stable nitrate-to-ammonia electroreduction at 1 A cm−2

Tang Yu,Li Jiale,Li Yanfang,Ran Pan,Zou Weixin,Yan Shicheng,Dong Lin

Achieving stable and selective electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (NO 3 RR) at high current densities demands a fundamental understanding of the hydrogenation mechanism. We demonstrate that alloying cobalt with ruthenium (RuCo) switches the dominant hydrogenation pathway from the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism, involving solvated protons, to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism, utilizing adsorbed protons. Microkinetic modeling, in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the competitive E-R pathway on pure Co causes sluggish hydrogenation kinetics and low Faradaic efficiency. In contrast, the L-H pathway on RuCo sustains high hydrogen coverage ( θ H  ≈ 0.45), enabling efficient hydrogen-atom transfer for high-rate and deep hydrogenation. Leveraging this mechanistic insight, we achieve a satisfactory ammonia yield rate of 135.53 ± 1.18 mg h −1 cm −2 with 100% Faradaic efficiency and robust 1000-h stability at 1 A cm⁻². This work provides critical understanding of electrochemical hydrogenation pathways for designing efficient catalysts operating under industrially relevant conditions.

A Periosteum-Inspired Janus Piezoelectric Scaffold Using Bioenergetic-Driven H-Type Vascularization for Diabetic Bone Regeneration

Kai Wang,Kai Jiang

An imbalance in the bone–vessel-coupled regeneration process is one of the key factors hindering the effective treatment of diabetic bone defects, which are rooted in the impaired function of mitochondria. Inspired by the bilayered heterogeneous structure of the periosteum, a bilayered, biomimetic, Janus piezoelectric scaffold (JPS) with endogenous piezoelectric effects was developed to regulate energy metabolism. JPS comprises a zinc-doped apatite–gelatin–poly-L-lactic acid membrane fabricated using electrospinning and integrated with a resveratrol-loaded microsphere composite hydrogel. Without requiring an external power source, JPS is designed to respond to local micromechanical stimulation and generate electroactive cues, while synergizing with the controlled release of resveratrol to regulate angiogenesis-related signaling and endothelial metabolic reprogramming. Single-cell sequencing indicated that bone microenvironment remodeling may be associated with H-type vessels, which are bone-specific microvasculatures. JPS provides a continuous power source in a high-sugar environment, thereby reconstructing the bone–vessel coupled regeneration process. JPS treatment stimulated the vascular features associated with H-type vessel-mediated bone regeneration in vascular organoids. The JPS group showed a substantially enhanced bone volume of 21.1% vs. 8.5% in the control in a diabetic calvarial defect model. This study presents an efficient material platform for addressing clinical challenges associated with diabetic bone regeneration.

Graphitic carbon nitrogen supporting h-BN nanosheets as lubricating additive: Enhancing mechanism on epoxy composite coating

Xuanlin Li,Wenchao Shi,Xiner Li,Zhe Dong,Shili Zhao,Tian He,Yang Tong,Xiang Li,Beibei Chen

Creating high-quality and highly adaptable self-lubricating surfaces at the interface of mechanical components is significant in extending the lifespan of equipment. Due to the limitations of the performance of a single nanofiller, its enhanced polymer-based coatings often struggle to meet the requirements of harsh working environments. In this study, the 2D/2D nanohybrid of graphitic carbon-nitrogen (g-C 3 N 4 ) supporting h-BN nanosheets (BNNSs) was prepared using the facile calcination method. Furthermore, its tribological enhancement on epoxy (EP) composite coating was evaluated by sliding against 440 C steel ball. The “soft phase” of g-C 3 N 4 and “hard phase” of BNNSs in 2D/2D BNNSs/g-C 3 N 4 nanohybrid could integrate the multiple advantages and provide synergistic enhancement for epoxy self-lubricating composite coating. The BNNSs/g-C 3 N 4 demonstrated the optimal lubricating properties for EP compared to single BNNSs or g-C 3 N 4 . Compared with the pure EP coating, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the 0.5 wt% BNNSs/g-C 3 N 4 /EP coating were reduced by approximately 74.5 % and 80.9 %, respectively. The outstanding tribological properties of BNNSs/g-C 3 N 4 /EP were mainly due to the synergistic enhancement of BNNSs and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets and the lubricating effect of high-quality transfer film.

Light-Promoted, Nickel-Catalyzed Hydrogen-Evolution C(sp3)–H Acylation of Simple Alkanes with Aromatic Aldehydes

Qiujie Shan,Lu-Lu Chai,David James Young,Zhi-Gang Ren,Hong-Xi Li

The light-promoted, nickel-catalyzed hydrogen-evolution C(sp3)–H acylation of simple alkanes with aromatic aldehydes has been achieved without the need for additional photosensitizers or oxidants. This reliable and atom-economical reaction afforded a broad range of aryl alkyl ketones in good yields, with H2 as the sole byproduct. It was successfully demonstrated on a gram scale as well as for the postfunctionalization of drug molecules. Aromatic aldehydes play multiple roles, including a photosensitizer, a coupling partner, and a hydrogen atom transfer agent.

Impact of the Polyphenol Structure on the Allergenic Potential of the Peanut Allergen Ara h 2

Kuan Gao,Qin Geng,Changbao Hu,Wenhui Zhang,Xin Li,Ping Tong,Anshu Yang,Zhihua Wu,Hongbing Chen

Interactions between food allergens and polyphenols can provide a method to alleviate food allergies. This study investigated the effect of differently structured polyphenols complexed with Ara h 2 based on high-throughput virtual screening, utilizing a spectroscopic, thermodynamic, bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) model, BMDCs-T cells coculture model, KU812 cells model, and molecular simulation analyses for the allergenicity evaluation. Hesperidin (HSD), neohesperidin (NH), and neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) exhibited a high binding energy and interacted with Ara h 2 through hydrogen bonding, primarily at two additional binding sites. This interaction led to protein unfolding and reduced hydrophobicity, particularly in the NH–Ara h2 complex. In addition, NH-bound Ara h2 has a lower potential for sensitization due to its reduced immunoglobulin E (IgE) binding capacity compared with Ara h 2 during gastrointestinal digestion. This is further supported by the decreased expression of costimulatory factors in BMDCs, the reduced release of allergenic cytokines, and the maintained balance of Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg. The same trend was followed by the HSD and NHDC complexes. These findings suggest that glycosidic bond positions play a more significant role in reducing sensitization than does the flavonoid structure. Therefore, this study can assist in developing oral-specific immunotherapy of individuals with peanut allergies under the potential interaction mechanism of polyphenols and Ara h 2.

Toxicity of Hypaconitine from Aconitum coreanum (H. Lév.) Rapaics Against the Oriental Armyworm, Mythimna separata (Walker)

Xiuwei Li,Jiaqi Xing,Meng Yang,Naiwei Chen,Yaping Liang

Simple SummaryThe oriental armyworm (Mythimna separata) is a highly destructive migratory pest threatening cereal crops. With rising insecticide resistance and environmental concerns, novel bio-based alternatives are critically needed. This study evaluates hypaconitine—a diterpenoid alkaloid derived fromAconitum coreanum—for its insecticidal potential. We demonstrate that hypaconitine acts not only as a potent stomach poison and antifeedant, but also exploits a key physiological vulnerability in the pest: the high metabolic cost of sustained detoxification. Treated larvae exhibit prolonged development, severe pupal deformities, reduced adult emergence, and shortened lifespan—classic signs of fitness loss. Biochemical analyses confirm strong, prolonged induction of detoxification enzymes (CarE, GST, CYP450), indicating that the insect’s own defense response becomes a liability. By turning the pest’s detoxification system against itself, hypaconitine disrupts multiple life stages with a multi-modal mode of action that reduces the likelihood of rapid resistance evolution. These findings position hypaconitine as a promising, eco-friendly lead compound for next-generation bioinsecticides targeting resistant lepidopteran pests.Mythimna separata(Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major migratory pest causing severe damage to cereal crops such as maize, wheat, and rice across Asia, and is also found in many parts of Oceania. With increasing insecticide resistance, botanical alternatives are urgently needed. This study evaluated the insecticidal potential of hypaconitine, a C19-diterpenoid alkaloid fromAconitum coreanum, againstM. separatalarvae. Hypaconitine exhibited significant stomach toxicity and strong antifeedant activity. It also caused pronounced growth inhibition, prolonged larval and pupal development, reduced pupation and adult emergence, induced morphological deformities, and significantly shortened adult longevity. Crucially, biochemical assays revealed sustained, time- and concentration-dependent upregulation of key detoxification enzymes—carboxylesterase (CarE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and cytochrome P450 (CYP450)—over 72 h, indicating that hypaconitine imposes severe metabolic fitness costs rather than being readily detoxified. These effects collectively demonstrate that hypaconitine’s insecticidal efficacy arises not only from direct toxicity but also from exploiting the physiological trade-offs inherent in xenobiotic defense. Its multi-modal action—combining larvicidal, antifeedant, growth-regulatory, and metabolism-disrupting effects—presents a novel strategy for bioinsecticide development with a lower risk of resistance evolution. These findings highlight hypaconitine as a promising candidate for sustainable, integrated management ofM. separataand other resistant lepidopteran pests.

Highly Engineered Cr-In/H-SSZ-39 Catalyst for Enhanced Performance in CH4-SCR of NOx

Jiuhu Zhao,Jingjing Jiang,Guanyu Chen,Meng Wang,Xiaoyuan Zuo,Yanjiao Bi,Rongshu Zhu

The selective catalytic reduction of NOxwith CH4(CH4-SCR) holds the potential to simultaneously abate harmful NOxand CH4greenhouse gases. In this study, a series of bimetallic M-In/H-SSZ-39 catalysts (where M represents Cr, Co, Ce, and Fe) were prepared via an ion exchange method and subsequently evaluated for their CH4-SCR activity. The influences of the preparation parameters, including the metal ion concentration and calcination temperature, as well as the operating conditions, such as the CH4/NO ratio, O2concentration, water vapor content, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), on the catalytic activity of the optimal Cr-In/H-SSZ-39 catalyst were meticulously examined. The results revealed that the Cr-In/H-SSZ-39 catalyst exhibited peak CH4-SCR catalytic performance when the Cr(NO3)3concentration was 0.0075 M, the In(NO3)3concentration was 0.066 M, and the calcination temperature was 500 °C. Under optimal operating conditions, namely GHSV of 10,000 h−1, 400 ppm NO, 800 ppm CH4, 15 vol% O2, and 6 vol% H2O, the NOxconversion rate reached 93.4%. To shed light on the excellent performance of Cr-In/H-SSZ-39 under humid conditions, a comparative analysis of the crystalline phase, chemical composition, pore structure, surface chemical state, surface acidity, and redox properties of Cr-In/H-SSZ-39 and In/H-SSZ-39 was conducted. The characterization results indicated that the incorporation of Cr into In/H-SSZ-39 enhanced its acidity and also facilitated the generation of InO+active species, which promoted the oxidation of NO and the activation of CH4, respectively. A synergistic effect was observed between Cr and In species, which significantly improved the redox properties of the catalyst. Consequently, the activated CH4could further interact with InO+to produce carbon-containing intermediates such as HCOO−, which ultimately reacted with nitrate-based intermediates to yield N2, CO2, and H2O.
