Deep eutectic solvents derived carbon-based efficient electrocatalyst for boosting H2 production coupled with glucose oxidation

Di Li,Yiming Huang,Zengyong Li,Linxin Zhong,Chuanfu Liu,Xinwen Peng

The electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is greatly limited by the sluggish anodic OER. Herein, a hybrid of cobalt nanoparticles supported in nitrogen doped porous carbon (Co@NPC) is prepared by using a biomass-based ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) as precursor and self-templates, which is utlized as bifunctional electrocatalyst for boosting H 2 generation and converting glucose into valuable chemicals simultaneously. Importantly, only a small cell voltage of 1.56 V is required to deliver 10 mA cm −2 , which is 180 mV lower than that of overall water splitting. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that nitrogen doping porous carbon could synergistically optimize adsorption energies of H 2 O (ΔE *H2O ) and *H adsorption free energies (ΔG *H ), enhancing catalytic activity toward HER. This work highlights the potential application prospects of using glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) instead of OER to promote H 2 generation and product value-added chemicals.

Uniform H-CdS@NiCoP core–shell nanosphere for highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic H2 evolution

Lili Deng,Ningjie Fang,Shilin Wu,Song Shu,Yinghao Chu,Jiaxiu Guo,Wanglai Cen

Constructing highly efficient and cost-effective photocatalyst system has been a big challenge for photocatalysis . Herein, CdS nanosphere ( N -CdS), hollow CdS (H-CdS) and a series of H-CdS@NiCoP core–shell nanospheres have been successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal method . The activity test showed that H-CdS exhibited higher photocatalytic activity (3.34 mmol g -1 h −1 ) compared with N -CdS (0.99 mmol g -1 h −1 ) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), suggesting that hollow structure could effectively improve photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the H-CdS@NiCoP-7 wt% displayed a maximum photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 13.47 mmol g -1 h −1 , which was about 4 times and 2.5 times higher than that of pristine H-CdS and H-CdS@Pt-3 wt%, respectively. Furthermore, H-CdS@NiCoP-7 wt% exhibited a good stability during 20 h test. The physicochemical properties were characterized by XRD , SEM , TEM, XPS , UV–vis DRS , PL and photoelectrochemical technique. The results showed that NiCoP addition can construct p-n junction with H-CdS and effectively promote the charge transfer from CdS to NiCoP, which improved the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. This work revealed that NiCoP could react as an excellent co-catalyst for enhancing H-CdS photocatalytic activity.

Pomegranate-like ZnxCd1-xS@MoS2 nano-heterostructure as a stable and efficient photocatalyst for H2 evolution

Xing-Liang Yin,Lei-Lei Li,Yao Lu,Shu-Rui Han,Jian-Min Dou,Da-Cheng Li

A novel pomegranate-like Zn x Cd 1-x S@MoS 2 core@shell nano-heterostructure was synthesized by using a facile one-pot solvothermal approach. In this architecture, the MoS 2 nanosheet and well-dispersed Zn x Cd 1-x S nanospheres serve as peel and seeds, respectively. While maintaining the advantages of nanoscale materials, such as high ratio of surface to volume and a relatively short charge transportation path, this unique structure also provides some additional positive features for H 2 generation application: (1) the intimate contact of MoS 2 and Zn x Cd 1-x S contributes to the well-defined heterostructure formation and thus enhances H 2 generation efficiency; (2) the MoS 2 nanosheets with amorphous-like structures providing numerous active sites for H 2 generation; (3) the multiple pore nano structure promotes mass transfer and allows the active site through exposure; (4) the coated MoS 2 with superior chemical stability protects Zn x Cd 1-x S from photocorrosion and disaggregation. With those advantages, the Zn x Cd 1-x S@MoS 2 heterostructure exhibits a high photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 28.22 mmol g −1  h −1 far exceeding that of pristine Zn x Cd 1-x S by a factor of more than 56 and maintains long term stability with no obvious active deterioration in 24 h performance evaluation. Moreover, the one-pot synthesis of this heterostructure significantly saves time and energy, rendering it cost-efficiency. The demonstrated strategy here could have great significance in the design and fabrication of the low-cost and high-efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts .

Electrospinning Preparation of GaN:ZnO Solid Solution Nanorods with Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity toward H2 Production

Jingyun Mao,Huiling Zhong,Xinpin Liu,Qingrong Qian,Yongjin Luo,Liren Xiao,Hun Xue

The development of a facile method for the synthesis of GaN:ZnO solid solution, an attractive material with a wurtzite-type structure, is vital to enhance its photocatalytic activity toward H2evolution. Herein, GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods with diameters of around 180 nm were fabricated by combining the electro-spun method with a sequentially calcinating process. Photocatalytic water-splitting activities of the as-obtained samples loaded with Rh2−yCryO3co-catalyst were estimated by H2evolution under visible-light irradiation. The as-prepared GaN:ZnO nanorods at a nitridation temperature of 850 °C showed the optimal performance. Careful characterization of the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods indicated that the nitridation temperature is an important parameter affecting the photocatalytic performance, which is related to the specific surface area and the absorbable visible-light wavelength range. Finally, the mechanism of the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods was also investigated. The proposed synthesis strategy paves a new way to realize excellent activity and recyclability of GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorod photocatalysts for hydrogen generation. Keywords:GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods;electrospinning technology;hydrogen evolution;visible-light photocatalysis

Two dimensional ultrathin MoSe2 bedecked Zn0.5Cd0.5S for reinforced photocatalytic H2 generation and toxic Cr (VI) reduction

Yanlin Jia,Zizhao Wang,Xiu-Qing Qiao,Lei Huang,Shenglong Gan,Dongfang Hou,Dong-Sheng Li

Metallic MoSe 2 with distinct platinum-like electronic configuration and compelling band gap structure exhibits zero approaching Gibbs free energy for H atom, hence can be approved as an ideal cocatalysts for H 2 evolution. However, the reports on MoSe 2 cocatalyst still leaves much room. Here, two dimensional ultrathin MoSe 2 nanosheets bedecked Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S nanoparticles were reported as efficient photocatalyst, in which metallic MoSe 2 nanosheets cocatalyst will do duty for electron sink to promote the separation of charge carriers and prolong the electrons lifetime, thus benefiting the improved photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity. As a result, Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/MoSe 2 composite with an optimized 9 wt% MoSe 2 presents a higher H 2 evolution activity of 4853.3 μmol g -1 h −1 , 3.57 folds of pure Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S sample (1361.0 μmol g -1 h −1 ). Meanwhile, the greatly enhanced photo-reduction efficiency for toxic heavy metal Cr (VI) ion by Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/MoSe 2 composite further certifies the promoted separation of electron- hole pairs. These results turned out that MoSe 2 is qualitied as candidate to serve as promising co-catalyst for photocatalyst energy conversion and decontamination.

High piezo-photocatalytic efficiency of H2 production by CuS/ZnO nanostructure under solar and ultrasonic exposure

Tianming Zhao,Qi Wang,An Du

To alleviate the energy shortage and to improve the environmental problems, low-cost and highly efficient materials for H 2 production are of considerable importance. Here, we report a nanostructure from CuS/ZnO NWs on steel mesh via a two-step hydrothermal route for piezo-photocatalytic H 2 production. The CuS/ZnO exhibits an absorption band in visible and ultra-violet bands. Under solar and ultrasonic exposure, the CuS/ZnO NWs demonstrate great piezo-photocatalytic performance (140 μmol g −1  h −1 ). The working mechanism can be attributed to the piezo-photocatalytic effect that the photogenerated electrons and holes are driven along opposite directions by built-in electrical field, decreasing the recombination rate and producing H 2 . This H 2 production mechanism holds great promise for development novel clean fuel.

CeVO4/CeO2 Heterostructure-Supported Co Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic H2 Production from Ammonia Borane under Visible Light

Jin Song,Fenglong Wu,Yulun Lu,Xinyan Zhang,Zhiwan Li

The effective separation of electron–hole pairs of the support plays an important role in improving the activity of a supported photocatalyst under visible-light irradiation. Herein, we constructed a CeVO4/CeO2 type-II heterojunction with strong electronic interactions and rich oxygen vacancies due to only minor lattice mismatch by the significantly changed crystal structure of two materials in the absence of an additional structure-directing agent in the calcination process. The CeVO4/CeO2 nanocomposites as supports for Co nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited remarkable photocatalytic performance for H2 evolution from ammonia borane (NH3BH3) at 25 °C. Experimental results clearly showed that a Co catalyst with a CeVO4/CeO2 nanocomposite in a 2:1 mol ratio had the best photocatalytic performance with a total turnover frequency (TOF) value of 90.9 min–1. The structure characterizations indicated that the excellent H2 evolution performance was attributed to the formation of type-II heterojunction with strong electronic interactions and rich oxygen vacancies between CeVO4 and CeO2 by the conversion of the crystal structure of two materials in the calcination process, which accelerated the separation and migration of electron–hole pairs, leading to increased electron density of Co NPs. This work underlines the importance of heterojunction construction and paves a way to designing heterostructure catalysts for photocatalytic H2 production from NH3BH3 under light irradiation with a wavelength range of 420–780 nm.

Co0.45W0.55 Nanocomposite from ZIF-67: An Efficient and Heterogeneous Catalyst for H2 Generation Upon NaBH4 Hydrolysis

Zhou Junjie,Yan Jiaying,Meng Xu,Chen Weifeng,Guo Jianfeng,Liu Xiang

Abstract It is still a significant challenge to replace noble metal based catalysts by non-noble metal-based, highly efficient and earth-abundant catalysts in the H 2 generation upon hydrolysis of sodium borohydride. Herein, we first design and synthesize the highly selective and heterogeneous Co x W y nanocomposites from ZIF-67 as robust catalysts for H 2 production upon the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride. Among them, the Co 0.45 W 0.55 nanocatalyst exhibits the highest TOF of 1770 mL H2 g cat −1 min −1 (the TOF related to only cobalt nanoparticles 8401 mL H2 g Co −1 min −1 ) over pure ZIF-67 or W nanoparticles and other ones. In addition, the Co 0.45 W 0.55 catalyst has been successfully recycled at least 5 times without any significant activity loss, although the W (VI) has been partly reduced to W (V), W (IV) and W (0) in the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride. This stability is taken into account by the highly active Co species rather than the activity of W itself. Based on the results obtained, we have shown that Co 0.45 W 0.55 nanocomposite can be a potential candidate for the replacement of a noble metal catalyst for H 2 generation. Graphic Abstract

Aqueous synthesis of composition-tuned defects in CuInSe2 nanocrystals for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic H2 evolution

Senlin Qu,Xin Yuan,Yu Li,Xingyang Li,Xiujuan Zhou,Xiaogang Xue,Kexiang Zhang,Juan Xu,Changlai Yuan

The composition and defect tolerance of CuInSe2 (CISe) quantum dots (QDs) provide a scaffold to design defects via tailoring the elemental ratio or distributions for boosting photocatalytic H2 evolution (PHE). Herein, a ligand-assisted two-step aqueous method was developed to prepare defect CISe quantum dots for the first time. UV-vis, XPS, HRTEM, and HADDF investigations confirmed the typical double-absorption edges of copper vacancy defects and indium substituted at copper site defects in the structure constructed through initial synthesis tuned by Cu/In ratio and the ensued coarsening. The steady-transient PL suggested that the D–A recombination with prolonged PL lifetime dominated the emission of composition-optimized CuInSe2 with the Cu/In ratio of 1/4 (CISe-1/4). Further transient photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations demonstrated that surface defects in the structure favor the carriers' separation/transportation. The CISe-1/4 exhibited a superior PHE rate of 722 μmol g−1 h−1, about 23 times higher than that of the initially synthesized CISe-1/4 nucleus (31 μmol g−1 h−1), with a maximum apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.3%. The analysis of energy levels and the coulombic interaction energy of electron–hole (Je/h) based on Raman, extending UV-vis spectra investigations suggested that surface defects resulted in decreased Je/h of CISe-1/4, favoring the enhanced PHE of this structure. This work is expected to provide a reference for designing effective non-noble metal I–III–VI photocatalysts.

Nickel doped MoS2 nanoparticles as precious-metal free bifunctional electrocatalysts for glucose assisted electrolytic H2 generation

Xi Liu,Pingwei Cai,Genxiang Wang,Zhenhai Wen

Hydrogen, as the one of clean energy source, has the advantages of high energy density and carbon-free emission. Water electrolysis is one of the most promising ways to generate hydrogen, but the rather high energy required seriously hinders its widespread applications yet. In this study, we report an alkaline electrolyzer to implement energy-saving H 2 generation by coupling cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with anodic glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) other than oxygen evolution reaction , in which nickel-doped MoS 2 nanoparticles (Ni–MoS 2 NPs) has been developed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for HER and GOR. The electrolyzer only requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V to reach an electrolysis current density of 10 mA cm −2 , about 270 mV lower than the corresponding value in the traditional electrolyzer. Electrolytic H 2 generation with the assistance of biomass derived materials may open a new way for the future sustainable development.

Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots Modified CdS Nanowires with Efficient Charge Separation for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Fulai Liu,Zhuan Wang,Yuxiang Weng,Rui Shi,Wangjing Ma,Yong Chen

Graphical Photocatalysis : A 0D-1D BPQDs/CdS composite with high-quality interface was prepared by a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach. The optimized H 2 evolution rate of 3 wt % BPQDs/CdS can reach up to 9.9 mmol g −1 h −1 . The enhanced activity is attributed to the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons from CdS to BPQDs, which is thoroughly demonstrated by time-resolved TAS spectra. Constructing a high-quality interface with strong coupling interaction is highly desirable in composite photocatalysts for the efficient interfacial charge transfer. Herein, we prepared black phosphorus quantum dots/CdS (BPQDs/CdS) binary composites with tight interfacial contact via a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach for efficient photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The optimized H 2 evolution rate of 3 wt % BPQDs/CdS can reach up to 9.9 mmol g −1 h −1 in lactic acid aqueous solution, 99 and 5.5 times greater than that of pristine BPQDs and CdS, respectively. Benefiting from the strong interface interaction between CdS and BPQDs in well-contacted BPQDs/CdS composites, efficient charge separation can be achieved, leading to enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity. Notably, the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons from CdS to BPQDs was unambiguously confirmed by time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy.

Construction of sandwich structured photocatalyst using monolayer WS2 embedded g-C3N4 for highly efficient H2 production

Dongyao Lin,Yunlong Zhou,Xiaoyuan Ye,Mingyuan Zhu

The construction of sandwich structured binary composite can enlarge its specific surface and strengthen the contact of binary interface. This can enhance H 2 generation efficiency of the photocatalyst . In this study, two-step strategy for the preparation of novel sandwich-structured g-C 3 N 4 /WS 2 is proposed. Step one is hydrothermal process producing the layered WO 3 , which is used as the precursor for monolayer WS 2 . While step two involves one-pot calcination process that generates sandwich structured g-C 3 N 4 /WS 2 . X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), Brunauer Emmett Teller method (BET), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are employed to characterize the composition, structure and morphology of g-C 3 N 4 /WS 2 . Photocatalytic H 2 generation tests show that the optimal H 2 generation rate of g-C 3 N 4 /WS 2 is 599.7 μmol h -1  g -1 (20 mg of photocatalyst), which is about 25 times higher than that of bare g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical tests are employ to establish possible mechanism of photocatalytic H 2 evolution in sandwich-structured g-C 3 N 4 /WS 2 .
