The structure and morphology of foam-like GaN (F-GaN) was significant to the performances of nanodevices, especially optoelectronic devices. Here we present a reasonable way to regulate the surface roughness on F-GaN, by the change of H 2 O concentration in the etching system. Ionic liquid (ILs) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([EMIM][OTF]) was used as the etchant for the photoelectrochemical etching (PECE) process. With the H 2 O concentration changed from 0 to 5 % in the etchant solution, the surface roughness of F-GaN was reduced from 57.6 to 34.6 nm. In addition, to describe the role of H 2 O in the etching procedure, a physical impact etching mechanism was proposed. These results further promoted the potential value of F-GaN in the optical field.

The solid–liquid phase equilibria of brine systems containing boric acid are the theoretical basis for the development of boric acid from brine resources. The phase equilibria of the systems NaCl–CaCl2–H3BO3–H2O and CaCl2–H3BO3–H2O at 323.15 K were investigated by the isothermal solution method. The phase diagram for the ternary system is composed of one co-saturation point, two univariant solubility curves, and two singe-salt crystallization fields of CaCl2·2H2O and H3BO3. The dry-salt phase diagram for the quaternary system consists of one invariant point, three univariant solubility curves, and three single-salt crystallization fields for NaCl, CaCl2·2H2O, and H3BO3. In the phase diagrams of the quaternary system at 298.15 and 323.15 K, the areas of sodium chloride and calcium chloride salt regions are enlarged, whereas the area of the H3BO3 region is diminished significantly with the increase of temperature. Using the Pitzer model, the lacking Pitzer parameters for H3BO3 were obtained by fitting the solubilities in the CaCl2–H3BO3–H2O system. The calculated solubilities with the Pitzer model were in accord with the experimental data.

The phase diagram can guide the comprehensive utilization of salt lake brine, particularly lithium extraction. In this paper, the study on phase equilibria of the quinary system Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O saturated with NaCl·2H2O and its subsystem Li+, Na+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O at 258.15 K were carried out using the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. Based on the experimental data, equilibrium diagrams for stable phases were plotted. For the equilibrium diagram of the quaternary system Li+, Na+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O at 258.15 K, there are two invariant points, five univariant curves, and four crystallization fields. The quinary system Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O saturated with NaCl·2H2O at 258.15 K contains three invariant points, seven univariant curves, and five crystallization fields. Comparing the phase diagram of the system at 258.15 K to that at 298.15 K reveals that, except KCl, all crystallization zones have decreased, and LiCl·MgCl2·7H2O has the smallest crystallization zone compared to the other salts in the systems. This fundamental research could be valuable for promoting comprehensive utilization of the lithium-containing salt lake brine.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into fuels using pure water as the proton source is of immense potential in simultaneously addressing the climate-change crisis and realizing a carbon-neutral economy. Single-atom photocatalysts with tunable local atomic configurations and unique electronic properties have exhibited outstanding catalytic performance in the past decade. However, given their single-site features they are usually only amenable to activations involving single molecules. For CO 2 photoreduction entailing complex activation and dissociation process, designing multiple active sites on a photocatalyst for both CO 2 reduction and H 2 O dissociation simultaneously is still a daunting challenge. Herein, it is precisely construct Cu single-atom centers and two-coordinated N vacancies as dual active sites on CN (Cu 1 /N 2C V-CN). Experimental and theoretical results show that Cu single-atom centers promote CO 2 chemisorption and activation via accumulating photogenerated electrons, and the N 2C V sites enhance the dissociation of H 2 O, thereby facilitating the conversion from COO* to COOH*. Benefiting from the dual-functional sites, the Cu 1 /N 2C V-CN exhibits a high selectivity (98.50%) and decent CO production rate of 11.12 µmol g −1 h −1 . An ingenious atomic-level design provides a platform for precisely integrating the modified catalyst with the deterministic identification of the electronic property during CO 2 photoreduction process.

The phase equilibria of the ternary system at 298.15 and 338.15 K were investigated by the isothermal dissolution equilibrium and wet-reside solid phase (Schreinemarkers rule) methods. The solubilities and the physicochemical properties containing density and refractive index were obtained experimentally. Then, the phase diagrams and the diagrams of physicochemical properties against the composition in the ternary system at two temperatures were proposed. The phase diagrams of this system at two temperatures contain two invariant points, three solubility curves, and three crystallized regions corresponding to NaNO 3 , RbNO 3 and double salt NaRb 2 (NO 3 ) 3 . According to the phase diagrams at 298.15 and 338.15 K, a novel separation process of RbNO 3 from the mixture solution of NaNO 3 was established for the first time, and the separation rate of RbNO 3 in the mixed solution reached 43.75% in a single yield. This work provides an efficient and reliable RbNO 3 green recovery method from the eluent solution of NaNO 3 efficiently.

The solubilities in the quaternary system NaCl–KCl–SrCl2–H2O and its subsystem KCl–SrCl2–H2O at 288.15 K were investigated with the isothermal dissolution method. The phase diagram of the ternary system is composed of two single-salt crystallizations for KCl and SrCl2·6H2O, two solubility univariant curves, and one cosaturated point. The dry-salt diagram of the quaternary system consists of three single-salt crystallization fields for NaCl, KCl, and SrCl2·6H2O, three solubility univariant curves, and one invariant point. By combination of the determined solubilities and Pitzer binary parameters obtained in the literature, the lacking Pitzer mixing parameters θNa,Sr, θK,Sr, ΨNa,Sr,Cl, and ΨK,Sr,Cl and the solubility product constants of the solid salts for the systems were fitted on the basis of the Pitzer model. The model was then used to calculate the solubilties of the two systems. The theoretical results calculated using the model coincide with the experimental values.

Ammonia is an important precursor of fertilizers and nitrogen compounds, and it is also a potential energy storage medium and alternative fuel for vehicles. The main ammonia production process is the Haber–Bosch process, which is energy- and capital-intensive. Therefore, it is crucial to find an alternative method for the synthesis of ammonia. In this paper, we reported a new non-noble metal N-doped nanocarbon/Fe3C nanoparticle catalyst (NCF) for the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia, yielding an NH3 production rate of 15.804 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 and Faradic efficiency (FE) as high as 2.72% at −0.4 V vs. RHE at room temperature and ambient pressure in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. We believe that this work will provide a new opportunity to design a new non-noble metal catalyst for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and also open a new route to solve the global energy and ecological crisis.

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 with H 2 O into CH 4 is a promising way to realize solar energy utilization and CO 2 conversion, in which the key issue is how to enhance and couple CO 2 reduction as well as H 2 O oxidation. In this work, we precisely fabricated a binary functional photocatalyst by loading Au@Pd nanoparticles onto V O -rich TiO 2 through a surfactant-free deposition-reduction method, whose fine structure was confirmed by aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM, EELS, EPR and XPS. Combining photocatalytic performance with a series of in situ FTIR measurements, we clarified the role of metallic sites and semiconductor support in coupling CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation. Specifically, H 2 O oxidation process was facilitated by the V O -rich TiO 2 to contribute more protons, followed by the activation of CO 2 and protons primarily by the metallic Au@Pd sites to form the surface bounded Au@Pd-CO 2 − and Au@Pd-H species. By adjusting the ratio of Au@Pd nanoparticles and V O concentration to manipulate the Au@Pd-CO 2 − /Au@Pd-H ratio, CH 4 yield of 26.32 μmol/(g·h) and selectivity of electron toward CH 4 of 96% can be observed with minimal concomitant H 2 generation. These findings could open a feasible and universal route to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of CO 2 conversion.

In this work, an all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst of WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS ternary heterostructures was constructed by introducing a small amount of Pd into the optimized WO 3 ·H 2 O/CdS binary system, where Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were sandwiched between WO 3 ·H 2 O nanosheets and CdS NPs. The WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS ternary heterostructures exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalysis towards the oxidative coupling of benzylamines to imines, compared with the other photocatalysts of WO 3 ·H 2 O, CdS, WO 3 ·H 2 O/CdS, WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd, and WO 3 ·H 2 O/CdS/Pd. The wavelength-dependent photocatalysis of WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS is in good agreement with its light-harvesting intensity at the corresponding wavelengths. The photoelectrochemical results reflected the enhanced charge carrier separation in WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS, and the photocatalytic H 2 evolution confirmed the highly efficient Z-scheme charge transfer in this ternary photocatalyst. Therefore, the WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS ternary heterostructures possess distinct advantages of extended light harvesting region, spatial separation of electron and holes, and elevated redox power, which synergistically contribute to the superior photocatalysis. The Pd NPs sandwiched between WO 3 ·H 2 O and CdS acted as not only an electron mediator to facilitate the interfacial charge separation but also a cocatalyst to accelerate the selective oxidation of benzylamine. This work demonstrates a rational design of highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts and presents some revelations about the photocatalytic mechanism for selective organic transformations.

The solid solution–aqueous solution (SSAS) equilibria in the KCl + RbCl + H 2 O system were redetermined at 298.15 K. The experimental data for (K,Rb)Cl were consistent with the formation of a continuous solid solution without miscibility gaps. The Schreinemakers’ wet residues method and an XRD quantitative analysis technique based on the Vegard approach were applied to determine the chemical composition of the solid solution phase of (K,Rb)Cl. The compositions of (K,Rb)Cl derived from the Vegard approach are in accordance with those from the wet residues method. The thermodynamic properties of mixing of the (K,Rb)Cl solid solution were theoretically predicted using atomistic simulations. From these simulations, a regular solution behavior is recognized that is consistent with the knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of mixing of (K,Rb)Cl obtained from SSAS equilibrium studies, but the predicted regular solution model parameter A
0 is significantly larger than that regressed from the SSAS equilibrium data. Finally, a thermodynamic model was developed for representing the SSAS equilibria and element partitioning in the KCl + RbCl + H 2 O system as a function of temperature that can be used for predicting the SSAS equilibria in the studied system over the temperature range 273.15–373.15 K.

The solubilities and refractive indices of the NaBr–CaBr2–H2O system at 288.15 K were determined using the isothermal equilibrium solution method. The phase diagram and refractive index diagram were drawn for this system at 288.15 K. The system belongs to the hydrate II type. The phase diagram is comprised of two invariant solubility points, three univariant solubility curves, and three areas of crystallization: NaBr·2H2O, NaBr and CaBr2·6H2O. Using the temperature-dependent formulas from the literature, the Pitzer parameters and the solubility product constants (ln Ksp) of NaBr·2H2O and NaBr were determined. Applying the Pitzer and Harvie–Weare (HW) model, the solubility product constant of CaBr2·6H2O was fit with the solubilities in this research work, and then, the mean activity coefficients of sodium bromide and calcium bromide and the solubilities for the ternary system at 288.15 K were demonstrated. Comparisons between the calculated and measured solubilities show that the predicted data have good accordance with the experimental results.

Introduction of H2O provides an effective strategy to tailor conductivity and viscosity in an electrolyte based on a deep eutectic solvent (DES), as well as customizing the energy storage performance. Herein, a novel DES as a suitable electrolyte is prepared by means of choline chloride (ChCl) and with crystalline magnesium chloride (MgCl2·6H2O), with different amounts of H2O added as additives to investigate its effect on the electrolyte's electrochemical properties. These novel DESs are systematically studied both theoretically and experimentally, as well as being utilized as electrolytes in supercapacitors. The results show that the addition of H2O significantly optimized the ion conductivity and the viscosity of the prepared DES electrolyte. The proposed mechanism is that introduction of H2O ‘dilutes’ the interaction between ions and hydrogen bonds, and enhances the capacity of ion transport and diffusion in the electrolyte system. The supercapacitor assembled with the optimized DES electrolyte (DES-1-1.0) exhibits superior electrochemical properties within a voltage range of 0–2.6 V, delivering a remarkable energy density of 87.7 W h kg−1 at a high power density of 1.69 kW kg−1 and retains 90.25% of its initial capacitance after undergoing 30 000 cycles at 10 A g−1.
