NO 2 is one of the most important atmosphere pollutants, causing great harm to the human body at very low concentrations (ppb levels). Herein, a novel fabrication idea for gas sensing materials was reported to detect ppb-level NO 2 via MOF-derived porous In 2 O 3 nanospheres (NSs) sensitized by CdS quantum dots (QDs). The good distribution of CdS QDs (2.5–4.0 nm) on porous In 2 O 3 NSs was verified by the transmission electron microscopy and element mapping analyses. In comparison to In 2 O 3 NSs, the CdS@In 2 O 3 composite nanospheres (CNSs) exhibited exceptional responses to ppb-level concentrations of NO 2 ( S =425.1@100 ppb) at room temperature (RT, 25 °C), while also demonstrating good selectivity and response reproducibility. These improvements in sensing performance were attributed to the synergies of the electronic effects of CdS QDs, MOF-derived porous nanostructures , and enhanced adsorption of NO 2 and active O 2 – by well-dispersed CdS QDs. This work emphasizes that the MOF-derived In 2 O 3 porous NSs sensitized by CdS QDs can accurately detect ppb-level concentrations of the NO 2 at RT.

Indium (In) is a typical critical metal, and the recycling of waste In-Tin oxide (ITO) target can alleviate the In resource supply scarcity. The dismantling and preprocessing of waste ITO targets inevitably introduce metallic impurities, posing significant challenges for In recovery, particularly the separation of In from Sn and the removal of other impurities. This study developed an integrated hydrometallurgical process to prepare high-purity nano-In 2 O 3 from high-impurity waste ITO, highlighting on the leaching and separation mechanisms of In, Sn, Al, and Mo. The process consists of HCl leaching for Mo separation, selective sulfide precipitation for In/Sn separation, TOA/TBP synergistic extraction for In/Al separation, and calcination for nano-In 2 O 3 preparation. Under optimal conditions, HCl leaching extracted over 94% of In, Sn, and Al while selectively suppressing Mo dissolution to below 13%. The HCl leaching, sulfide precipitation, and solvent extraction mechanisms are also discussed in this study. The final In 2 O 3 product was 99.98% pure, with about 25 nm average particle size and 77.8% overall In recovery. This work provides an efficient route for high-purity nano-In 2 O 3 production from high-impurity wastes.

The conversion of CO 2 into value-added chemicals is an effective way to mitigate the environmental problems caused by huge anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. Although In 2 O 3 /Pd catalyst possesses excellent catalytic performance in CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol, the formation of Pd-In alloy on the catalyst surface greatly reduces the yield of methanol. Herein, we adopt a natural biomaterial ( viz. , rape pollen) as a template to synthesize hierarchically structured bio-In 2 O 3 and bio-In 2 O 3 /Pd catalysts. In particular, we found that the pretreatment of pollen using hydrochloric acid (HCl) played a critical role in determining catalytic performance. A series of bio-In 2 O 3 were prepared by using the pollen templates with different etching degrees, and then the bio-In 2 O 3 -x/Pd catalysts (x denoted as the amount of HCl, mL) were prepared using an impregnation-reduction method. It was surprising that the CO 2 conversion of bio-In 2 O 3 –15/Pd catalyst was 8.2% with methanol selectivity of 74.7%, which was much better than the bio-In 2 O 3 –0/Pd (2.6% and 54.6%, respectively). The dramatic enhancement was due to that the acid-etched pollen template owns a hollow cage-like structure and abundant surface functional groups (-NH 2 and -COOH), which is beneficial to the growth of In 2 O 3 with a high amount of surface oxygen vacancies. Also, the bio-In 2 O 3 /Pd catalyst (prepared with untreated pollen template) was more prone to form Pd-In alloys as a result of the strong interaction between Pd with In 2 O 3 . In contrast, the In 2 O 3 spatial distribution of bio-In 2 O 3 –15/Pd was more uniform with an appropriate interaction of Pd with In 2 O 3 that inhibited the formation of Pd-In alloys. Even Pd loaded on commercial In 2 O 3 exhibited inferior performance (3.4% CO 2 conversion and 81% methanol selectivity) to bio-In 2 O 3 –15/Pd catalyst. Accordingly, the present work offers a green and efficient method to prepare supported In 2 O 3 /Pd catalysts by using the acid-etched pollen as a template.

Modulating the internal electric field (IEF) represents a potential strategy to stimulate the photocatalytic activity of heterojunctions, especially S-scheme photocatalysts. Herein, a Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 @V O -In 2 O 3 (CBB@V O -In 2 O 3 ) S-scheme heterojunction, of which Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are embedded into mesoporous V O -In 2 O 3 hosts, is rationally designed as a cornerstone for further IEF manipulation. Briefly, by introducing oxygen vacancies (V O ) into the composed reduction semiconductor (mesoporous In 2 O 3 ), an enlarged Fermi level ( E F ) gap between CBB and V O -In 2 O 3 is achieved, yielding an intensified IEF over the CBB@V O -In 2 O 3 heterojunction. Such an enhanced IEF affords a much more robust driving force for directional carrier delivery, leading to accelerated carrier transfer of CBB@V O -In 2 O 3 heterojunction. Consequently, the optimized CBB@V O -In 2 O 3 heterojunction features desirable CO 2 -to-CO conversion efficiency, and its CO production rate reaches 130.96 μmol g −1 h −1 . The reaction intermediates and CO 2 photoconversion pathway were unraveled by in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Combining with the DFT calculation, it was revealed that oxygen vacancies in V O -In 2 O 3 act as reactive centers, which optimize the coordination modes of the intermediates, thus reducing the activation energy for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Our work demonstrates that the IEF modulation of S-scheme-based heterojunction could significantly boost the charge separation and then to drive efficient catalytic reaction , achieving high-efficiency solar fuel production.

Ion co-doped photocatalysts with In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 heterostructure (In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 (m)) were prepared through a new polymeric precursor method. The In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 (m) precursor solution is of salient advantage in coating photocatalysts on various substrates and multiple modifications. The photocatalysts were facilely obtained after the calcination of precursors. Mass ratio of In/Ti was optimized according to their photocatalytic performances, and IT(m)-3 ( w In/Ti = 3%, modified by N, B co-doping) showed the best photocatalytic activity. The band gap was successfully narrowed to 2.37 eV, and In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 heterostructure was successfully constructed in the photocatalysts. Visible light absorption and separation of photoexcited carriers were significantly enhanced. Under visible light, NOX (20 mg/L in the water) was 100% photodegraded in 10 min, with 100% TOC removed in 25 min. The IT(m)-3-loaded quartz fabrics (ITQ) also showed excellent photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic activity of ITQ was repeatable and stable in 45 rounds of recycle without centrifugation. Synergetic effect of heterostructure and element doping was considered contributing to the outstanding photocatalysis performance. The polymeric precursor method proposed in this work showed great potential in large-scale preparation and application of immobilized photocatalysts. The synergetic improvement through co-modifications showed its proper compatibility with modifications.

The porous and tubular structure is conducive to improving performance of sensing materials. At present, how to obtain sensitive materials with unique porosity and high surface activity by green, low-cost and simple synthesis methods is still a challenge. In this work, novel In 2 O 3 porous microtubes were obtained by water etching of MIL-68-In and calcination methods for the first time. The as-prepared microtubes exhibit excellent NO 2 sensitivity at 50 ℃ (S=156–3 ppm NO 2 ), and the limit of detection is 50 ppb. The sensor also has good NO 2 detection ability in the actual environment. The excellent NO 2 sensing performance at low temperature is closely related to high surface activity of In 2 O 3 porous microtubes. Combined with TPD, in-stiu DRIFT and XPS technologies, the NO 2 sensing mechanism was detailed analyzed. This work provides useful guidance for constructing high performance NO 2 sensor. The excellent NO 2 sensing performance at low temperature makes a positive contribution to promoting the application of metal oxide sensors in environmental detection.

In advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxynitrite (PMS), generating reactive radicals efficiently and consistently is challenging due to high electron occupancy and slow conversion rates of PMS. In this study, ultrathin In 2 O 3 with oxygen vacancies (Ov) was combined with ultrathin ZnAl-LDH to construct S-scheme In 2 O 3 -Ov/ZnAl-LDH-Ov heterojunctions. The presence of Ov promotes the formation of charge-transfer channels (Al-O-In bonding) at the interface of these heterojunctions, thereby reducing electron occupancy and enhancing the generation of active radicals in the InLDH/PMS/Vis system. This S-scheme heterojunction facilitates the acceleration of photogenerated electrons, leading to the rapid conversion of PMS into hydroxyl (•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 - •), and promotes swift electron transfer. Consequently, the InLDH/PMS/Vis system demonstrates exceptional degradation efficiency for a wide range of organic pollutants and a high removal capacity in treating real industrial wastewater. This investigation offers a novel perspective on the coordination mechanisms between photocatalysis and PMS activation.

S-scheme In 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure was prepared for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation through in-situ growth of In 2 O 3 nanorods (NRs) onto g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (NSs) via high-temperature thermal polymerization method. The results show that resulted heterostructure could exhibit varying photocatalytic behaviors under simulated sunlight depending on In 2 O 3 loading ratios. The one with loading ratio of In 2 O 3 to g-C 3 N 4 at 10 wt% could display the best photocatalytic performance with efficiency up to 93.4% within 60 min, which are 2.61-fold and 1.17-fold higher than In 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 . Herein, In 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 components with matched band structures could individually serve as holes quencher and electrons donor to prolong carrier lifetime through in-situ formed interfacial electrostatic field due to their different Fermi levels. An S-scheme heterostructure could thus be engineered to facilitate charge carrier migration while enhancing redox capabilities, ultimately yielding superior photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the developed heterostructure could present superior structure and activity stability. Crucially, it was noticed that • O 2 – and • OH radicals played a major role in TCH degradation and the possible degradation and mineralization pathways as well as toxicity of by-products were explored based on identified intermediate products. These findings underscore that In 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure could hold substantial potential for practical environmental remediation applications.

Tubular carbon-covered cobalt-doped bi-crystalline phase In 2 O 3 (denoted as CoInO-x) was synthesized by one-step calcination of the metal-organic framework cobalt-doped MIL-68(In)-NH 2 precursor. The photocatalytic activity of CoInO-x was investigated using tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation. The removal of TCH by CoInO-500 obtained by calcination at 500 °C under visible light irradiation was 90.1% after 70 min, which was significantly higher than that of In 2 O 3 . The reaction rate constant of CoInO-500 was 11.02 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 and could maintain a better photocatalytic performance after four cycles. The effects of photocatalyst dosing, pH, and inorganic anions on photocatalytic degradation were studied. The mechanism of photocatalytic degradation was analyzed in detail by reactive radical trapping experiments, Mott-Schottky measurements, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal characterization. Enhanced photocatalytic performance is mostly attributed to the cobalt doping creating impurity energy levels and narrowing the forbidden bandwidth of In 2 O 3 , enhancing the visible light utilization and the photogenerated charge separation efficiency. Carbon covering can serve as a bridge for charge transport, accelerating the rapid transport of photogenerated charges.

A one-step single-spinneret electrospinning method is used to prepare tunable In2O3 hierarchical structures of one-dimensional electrospun fibers with in situ growth of octahedron-like particles, and various typical microstructures can be obtained by accurately adjusting the parameter of calcination time. A gas-sensing performance test indicates that hierarchical In2O3 sensors not only have a good gas-sensing response value of about 11.2 for 50 ppm triethylamine (TEA) at 25 °C, but they also have the highest response value (87.8 for 50 ppm TEA) at an optimal working temperature (40 °C) compared with other In2O3 microstructures in the present work. Significantly, sensors based on In2O3 hierarchical structures have excellent gas selectivity and stability, which can be applied for monitoring of freshness of shrimps, demonstrating a practical application of sensors in the chemical and food industries. The synergistic effect of an accessible surface structure, multiple reaction sites, and unique electron transmissions results in enhanced gas-sensing performances. This study offers a promising method for the construction of various inorganic oxide gas sensors with unique hierarchical microstructures for efficiently detecting TEA at near room temperature.

Silicon (Si) shows excellent potential as an anode material for sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, Si anodes face inherent challenges such as low electron conductivity and large volume changes during cycling, ultimately resulting in a short cycle life. Herein, to address these challenges, In 2 O 3 /C derived from an indium-based metal-organic framework (In-MOF) is utilized to encapsulate Si particles in situ. The Li-In alloy and Li 2 O formed in situ after the lithiation of In 2 O 3 /C provide rapid Li + transportation properties, and the existence of In 2 O 3 /C efficiently relieves the significant volume changes of Si. Consequently, the Si anode exhibits improved cyclic stability. The composite Si@In 2 O 3 /C anode prepared with a high loading of 7.64 mg cm −2 maintains a high specific capacity of 1093.2 mAh g −1 (8.36 mAh cm −2 ) after 500 cycles at 2.74 mA cm −2 , maintaining 84.3% of the initial capacity. Furthermore, a full cell prepared with a Si@In 2 O 3 /C composite anode and a LiNbO 3 -coated LiNi 0.7 Co 0.2 Mn 0.1 O 2 (LNO@NCM) cathode shows excellent cyclic stability, with 74.3% of the capacity retained after cycling 1000 times at 0.2C (0.51 mA cm −2 ) and an average Coulomb efficiency of 99.94%. This study offers a compelling idea for the design of sulfide-based ASSLB anode materials.

A multi-interfacial NiO@In 2 O 3 /ZnO porous heterojunction array was designed. • The heterojunction array enabled highly efficient room temperature ammonia detection. • Multi-phase interfaces greatly enhanced the ammonia adsorption and charge transfer. • Porous array design and light activation further promoted the sensing reaction. • The work clarified the important role of multi-phase interfaces in gas sensing. Heterojunction engineering provides an effective means to enhance the gas sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors through band structure optimization and interface effects. However, current research on heterojunction engineering primarily centers on binary heterojunctions (including p-n, n-n, and p-p junctions), while studies concerning ternary or multicomponent metal oxide heterojunctions for gas sensing remain exceedingly limited and challenging. Herein, a ternary NiO@In 2 O 3 /ZnO porous heterojunction array is fabricated in-situ on commercial alumina sensing substrate via a facile liquid-phase chemical reaction combined with topotactic transformation. The heterojunction array enables highly efficient room temperature ammonia detection under visible light illumination, exhibiting a high response of 263% towards 100 ppm ammonia, a fast recovery of 21 s, and a low detection limit of 0.483 ppm. Moreover, it displays excellent selectivity, strong resistance to humidity interference, and stable long-term performance. First-principles calculations integrated with spectroscopic characterization suggest that the construction of ternary NiO@In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterojunction with multi-phase interfaces greatly enhances the ammonia surface adsorption and promotes the interfacial charge transfer efficiency. Interestingly, there exists a notable positive correlation between the d-band center position of sensing materials and their adsorption behavior as well as sensing performance. This work not only achieves a multi-dimensional enhancement in the room temperature ammonia sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductors through ternary heterojunction construction, porous array design and external light field activation, but also significantly enhances the gas sensing mechanism of ternary heterojunctions at atomic and electronic scale, offering new insights for the rational designing of high-performance resistive gas sensors via multi-phase interfaces.
