During the planting, storage, or feeding stages, foodstuffs can be easily polluted by mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B 1 , patulin and zearalenone, which are produced by pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, the removal of these mycotoxins constitutes an active area of research. Herein, we used an Fe/Zn metal–organic framework (MOF) as a precursor to fabricate a novel La–ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon magnetic hybrid composite via a simple absorption–pyrolysis method and explored its photocatalytic performance in the degradation of aflatoxin B 1 , patulin, and zearalenone. La–ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon can effectively degrade 98.37% of aflatoxin B 1 , outperforming Fe 3 O 4 @carbon (69.57%) and ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon (91.39%). Moreover, La–ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon exhibits superior stability and excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of patulin (97.35%) and zearalenone (98.52%). Transient photocurrent response measurements reveal that the La doping and the combination with ZnFe 2 O 4 highly promote the separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs on Fe 3 O 4 @carbon. An electron spin resonance analysis suggests that · OH and · O 2 − are the main active radicals during the photodegradation process. Thus, a plausible photodegradation pathway for the degradation of mycotoxins produced by pathogenic microorganisms is proposed.

Effective removal of both nitrogen and phosphorus from water is of great importance for maintaining the safety of the environment. In this work, ordered mesoporous carbon electrode materials containing La(OH) 3 and Fe 3 C components (La#OMC-Fe 3 C) were prepared by combining solvent evaporation induced self-assembly and impregnation methods. The ordered pores in La#OMC-Fe 3 C facilitated electron transfer at the electrode-solution interface during nitrate reduction and provided voids for phosphate removal . In the electrochemical system, Fe 3 C in the electrode supplied electrons for nitrate reduction and gave the electrode a high degree of stability, whereas La(OH) 3 selectively removed phosphate, thus avoiding byproduct precipitation from solution. The electrode material maintained efficient electrochemical nitrogen and phosphorus removal over a wide range of conditions including pH (3–11) and aqueous environments containing multiple ions (Cl − , SO 4 2− , K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ ) or actual aqueous environments (seawater). After 10 cycles, the performance of La#OMC-Fe 3 C for nitrogen and phosphorus removal remained above 97%. This work realizes the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in the electrochemical system, and solves the problems of precipitation in water and non-circulation of electrodes, which can provide a new strategy for the treatment of eutrophic water in practical production.

In this work, Pb 1−3 x /2 La x ZrO 3 ( x = 0–0.12) (PLZ- x ) antiferroelectric thin films were fabricated on Pt(111)/TiO 2 /SiO 2 /Si substrates using chemical solution method. Smaller cations (La 3+ ) and vacancies were introduced into A-sites of perovskite structure to construct chemical pressure. According to phenomenological theory, chemical pressure can increase the energy barrier between antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) phase, and enhance antiferroelectricity of the system. As a result, a large energy storage density ( W re ) of 23.1 J cm −3 and high efficiency ( η ) of 73% were obtained in PLZ-0.10 films, while PLZ-0 films displayed lower W re (15.1 J cm −3 ) and η (56%). More importantly, PLZ-0.10 films exhibited an excellent cycling stability with a variation of ˜2% after 1 × 10 8 cycles. The results demonstrate that heavily La-doped PbZrO 3 films with high energy storage density, high efficiency and excellent cycling stability can be considered as potential candidates for energy storage applications.

A novel nanocomposite bead LaLiAl-LDH@201 was fabricated by doping a small amount of La into nanocrystalline Li/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) pre-confined inside polystyrene anion exchanger D201 (LiAl-LDH@201). A systematic characterisation of the resultant LaLiAl-LDH@201 (XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM-EDS, and XPS) evidenced the successful incorporation of La into the Li/Al LDHs, with their interlayer distance expanded to allow more exchangeable sites for fluoride uptake. The resultant LaLiAl-LDH@201 showed high and stable defluoridation performance over a wide range of pH from 4 to 9. The superior uptake capacity and affinity for fluoride of LaLiAl-LDH@201 over LiAl-LDH@201 were driven by both the increased anion exchange capacity of the embedded LDHs and the specific La-F interaction evidenced via XPS and TEM-EDS characterisation. Fixed-bed column test confirmed that the working capacity of LaLiAl-LDH@201 for defluoridation of authentic fluoride-rich groundwater was nearly twice that of LiAl-LDH@201. The fluoride-loaded LaLiAl-LDH@201 could be conveniently regenerated in situ by using NaOH + NaCl binary solution, achieving desorption efficiency above 98%. Moreover, negligible capacity loss, La leaching, or structure alteration was observed after five adsorption-regeneration cycles, indicating the high stability of LaLiAl-LDH@201. Therefore, the novel millisphere nanocomposite LaLiAl-LDH@201 was promising for efficient defluoridation from water and wastewater.

Li–La–Zr–O thin films were successfully fabricated using the sol-gel spin coating method and the effects of the addition of surfactant in the solution were studied. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Atomic Force Microscope were used to investigate the characteristics of these films and an amorphous structure and smooth surface on the films were revealed. The ionic conductivity of the film was investigated by impedance analysis. The results showed that the room-temperature ionic conductivity of the film increases with the content of surfactant, from 1.8 × 10 −6 S/cm for 0.5 wt% to 3.9 × 10 −6 S/cm for 1.5 wt%. However, further increasing the content of surfactant can deteriorate the property of the thin film on the contrary. The improvement of the property can be attributed to the improvement of the morphology of the film. We propose that this Li–La–Zr–O thin film is a promising solid electrolyte for thin-film lithium-ion batteries.

Ni-rich layered oxides offer numerous advantages such as high discharge capacity, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness, making them the mainstream cathodes for high-energy density lithium-ion batteries. However, their widespread commercialization is hindered by critical challenges in cycling performance, stemming from unstable interface and structure, particularly at elevated charge cut-off voltages. Herein, a dual-modification strategy combining La doping and La 4 NiLiO 8 coating was proposed to synergistically enhance the surface/interface and structure stability of the LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (referred to as NCM83) cathode. Unlike conventional methods, a well-designed La(OH) 3 coating pretreatment was employed on the Ni 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 (OH) 2 precursor. This pretreatment aimed to facilitate the in-situ formation of La doping and La 4 NiLiO 8 during the lithiation of the coated precursor, while ensuring desired uniformity of the La 4 NiLiO 8 coating and La doping. This dual-modification strategy integrated the advantages of both La doping and La 4 NiLiO 8 coating, demonstrating excellent capability to improve the overall performance of NCM83. The La doping, acting as a pillar, not only strengthened the layered structure of the cathode to mitigate volume changes, but also enhanced Li + diffusion by broadening the c axis spacing. The La 4 NiLiO 8 coating efficiently protected the cathode from H 2 O/CO 2 attack and electrolyte erosion, while also facilitating Li + transport owing to its favorable Li-conductive properties. Such a dual-modification strategy significantly enhanced the electrochemical performance of NCM83, as demonstrated by the excellent long-term cyclic stability, rate capability, and thermal stability at a high charge cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. This work highlighted the benefits of integrating elemental doping and surface coating, while offering a promising synthetic protocol for straightforward and effective dual-modification of various cathodes.

The use of transition metal-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as an advanced oxidation technology has gained recognition. This study developed a catalyst using cobalt–lanthanum bimetallic oxide supported on layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) as a carrier. The Co–La/MoS 2 catalyst was synthesised through coprecipitation, followed by calcination with an optimised metal ratio of Co:La = 2:1 to activate PMS and degrade trace chloramphenicol (CAP) in water. The chemical composition of the catalyst was confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At catalyst and PMS dosages of 0.1 and 0.5 g·L −1 , respectively, the degradation rate of CAP was 95% within 30 min. The catalyst exhibited strong resistance to most interfering anions and maintained a high degradation rate at pH 3–11. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis revealed the potential degradation pathways of CAP in the Co–La/MoS 2 (2:1)/PMS system. For other pollutants, such as oxytetracycline, complete degradation was achieved within 20 min, demonstrating the broad applicability of the Co–La/MoS 2 (2:1)/PMS system for the degradation and removal of antibiotic organic contaminants. This study offers a feasible approach for the degradation of antibiotic organic pollutants, including CAP, in natural water bodies. Graphical abstract

Lithium (Li) - and manganese (Mn)-rich oxides ( x Li 2 MnO 3 ·(1− x ) Li TM O 2 , TM = Ni, Co, Mn, etc.) are one of the most promising cathode materials because of their high theorical capacity, which is contributed by the redox of both transition metal cations and oxygen anion. However, anionic redox leads to transition-metal migration and release of lattice oxygen, which further triggers voltage decay and capacity fade. Here, we report a dual-doping and multiphase co-existence strategy to tackle the structure degradation of Li- and Mn-rich materials and enhance electrochemical kinetics. La–Ti dual cations doping strength the TM -O bonds and improve cycling stability, and the inducement of LaMnO 3+ δ (LaMO) phase provides higher conductivity. As a result, the unique architecture presents a favourable rate performance, improved capacity retention, and suppressed voltage decay. After 200 cycles at 1C (250 mA g −1 ), the La–Ti dual cations doped Li-and Mn-rich material shows 24 % higher capacity retention and 52 % lower voltage decay compared to the non-doped material. This study demonstrates the potential of dual transition-metal ion doping combined with doping-induced perovskite phase to enhance the performance of Li- and Mn-rich materials.

As a representative magnetic oxide absorber, Fe 3 O 4 has attracted considerable research attention owing to its remarkable magnetic saturation strength as well as semiconducting properties. Doping Fe 3 O 4 with La 3+ leads to 3d-4f magnetic coupling and ion distribution changes due to the unique electron configuration and large ionic radius of La 3+ , thereby greatly enhancing the magnetic performance. However, high density, low dielectric loss, and low permeability at high frequencies inhibit the electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) performance of ferrites. In this study, stick-shaped Sn metal-organic framework (MOF) is in-situ grown on La 3+ -doped Fe 3 O 4 using a surfactant. After high-temperature annealing, the SnO 2 /porous carbon composites derived from Sn-MOF wrap the ferrite, forming a core-shell heterostructure, which not only prevents oxidation but also enhances the EMWA performance. Among the prepared La x Fe 3-x O 4 /SnO 2 /C (LFSC) samples, LFSC-2 (with La x Fe 3-x O 4 to Sn-MOF ratio of 1:2) exhibits strong absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −44.1 dB. Furthermore, the gradient metamaterial based on LFSC-3 shows ultra-broadband EMWA with an effective absorption bandwidth ( RL min ≤ −10 dB) of 13.17 GHz. In addition, the LFSC-2 sample demonstrates excellent radar stealth capability in the radar cross section (RCS) far-field response, achieving an RCS reduction value of 20.4 dB∙m 2 .

NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and La-, Mo- or W-doped NiFe-LDH microparticles (NiFeX-LDH, X = La, Mo, W) were synthesized via the co-precipitation method. Their adsorption characteristics were evaluated by the removal of methyl orange (MO) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). The effects of the metal ion doping type, doping concentration (0–3at%), pH and temperature on the MO adsorption properties were systematically studied. The results show that W-doped NiFe-LDH exhibits superior MO removal capacity compared to undoped or La- or Mo-doped NiFe-LDH at the same 1at% doping level, which is attributed to the increased layer charge density and strong affinity for the π-electron systems of MO molecules. The NiFeW-LDH-1at% sample demonstrated the best MO adsorption performance within the W-doping range of 0–3at%, achieving a superior adsorption capability of 666.67 mg/g with a significantly shorter equilibrium time (10–120 min) compared to the similar LDH. NiFeW-LDH-1at% showed promising reusability, with its adsorption efficiency remaining 78.3% of its initial level after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The MO uptake onto NiFeX-LDH was attributed to the combined effect of anion exchange and the attraction of layer charge. In addition, the adsorption of NiFeW-LDH-1at% matched well with the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a monolayer and chemical adsorption. Furthermore, NiFeW-LDH-1at% effectively adsorbed of Cr2O72−in the aqueous solution, revealing that W doping significantly enhances Cr(VI) removal performance. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity onto NiFeW-LDH-1at% reached 63.25 mg/g, which was notably higher than that of the pristine NiFe-LDH adsorbent (53.56 mg/g). Overall, the W-doped NiFe-LDH material, as a low-cost and highly efficient adsorbent, shows great potential for wastewater treatment application.

The study employed a direct hydrothermal method to synthesize NiO/La-KTaO 3 heterojunction photocatalysts. The photocatalytic efficiency of the composites was assessed by their ability to destroy isoamyl xanthate in the presence of Ultraviolet light, mimicking the conditions seen in flotation wastewater. The results showed a significantly greater photocatalytic activity when comparing the composite catalyst to KTaO 3 . A photocatalytic reaction was performed utilizing a 40 mg NiO/K 1−x La x TaO 3 (x = 0.04) photocatalyst at pH = 3. The reaction was carried out using 50 mL of isoamyl xanthate synthesis wastewater, which had a concentration of 20 mg/L. The degradation rate achieved after 30 min was 87.28%. The addition of nickel oxide (NiO) and the introduction of La into the K lattice position were thought to facilitate charge separation, migration, and the generation of additional active sites, hence augmenting the catalytic impact. The findings from radical capture tests indicated that the ·O 2− (superoxide ion) served as the principal active species in the photocatalytic process, playing a substantial role. The process of photodegradation of isoamyl xanthate was determined through the utilization of different analytical and testing methods. This work introduces a direct and effective approach for the eco-friendly decomposition of xanthate flotation wastewater.

The practical application of conventional Ti/SnO 2 -Sb electrodes is hindered by their low oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and rapid deactivation. Rare earth doping has been proposed to enhance electrode stability and catalytic activity; however, the comparative effects of different rare earth elements (e.g., La vs. Eu) on both structural and electrochemical properties remain unclear. In this paper, the fabrication of lanthanum- and europium-doped Ti/SnO 2 -Sb (TSS) electrodes and the electrochemical degradation of methylene blue (MB) were investigated. Although both lanthanum (La) and europium (Eu) are rare earth elements with many similarities, lanthanum (La)-modified electrode exhibits distinct performance characteristics. It is indicated that the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-La (TSSL) electrode has a comparatively better crystal phase, enhanced surface hydrophobicity, and better electrochemical performance. The TSSL electrode exhibits a higher OEP of 1.84 V than other electrodes, showing a 0.15 V increase when compared with the undoped electrode. The peak oxidation current reaches 0.82 mA/cm 2 , which provides more active sites for the catalytic reaction. It is found that the La-doped electrode has better performance in wastewater treatment; the TSSL electrode shows a 45% increase in degradation efficiency when compared with the Ti/SnO 2 -Sb-Eu (TSSE) electrode for treatment of 50 ppm MB in 25 min. Moreover, the effects of current density and the initial concentration of MB were also investigated. Considering the degradation rate and energy consumption, the optimum current density for wastewater treatment is 20 mA/cm 2 . The outcome indicated that the degradation of MB was up to 98.5% in 25 min.
