Acid-resistant and thermally stable PEEK-PANI@MIL-101 membranes via dual in-situ growth strategy for high-efficiency dye separation from organic solvents

Lulu Yuan,Ziyu Lin,Xue Li,Zhiwei Zhao,Liyuan Chen,Qiang Ren,Siwen Ding,Jinhui Pang,Zhenhua Jiang

Polymer-MOF composite membranes have attracted the attention of researchers in the field of organic solvent nanofiltration by fully utilizing the synergistic advantages of the processability of polymers and the molecular sieving properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, the performance of such composite membranes in organic solvents is greatly reduced by insufficient interfacial interactions at the polymer-MOF interface. In this study, an in situ co -construction strategy of polyaniline (PANI) and MOF was employed to create a stabilized interface on the polymer matrix while converting the poly(ether ether ketone) precursor substrate (PEEKt) into solvent-resistant PEEK to fabricate high-performance nanofiltration membranes for organic solvents (PEEK-PANI@MIL-101). This composite membrane exhibits a rejection rate exceeding 97 % for Rose Bengal (RB) in ethanol solution, coupled with an ultrahigh ethanol permeance of 266 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 . The integrated dual in situ growth strategy significantly enhances the interfacial adhesion of the composite membrane. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrates outstanding thermal resistance and acid stability, ensuring robust performance under harsh operating conditions.

Lauric acid/MIL-101-NH2 composite enhanced thermal conductivity and thermal stability of phase change material for thermal energy management: Experiment and molecular dynamics simulations

Ying Li,Jue Wang,Yue Liu,Yinshui He,Xiongxin Jiang,Qinglin Li,Yan Ma,Guangbin Yi,Xiaowu Hu

Developing phase change materials (PCMs) with high energy storage efficiency, thermal conductivity, and shape stability is important for thermal management of electronic devices and other low-temperature energy-storage applications. In this study, amino-functionalized MIL-101 (MIL-101-NH₂) was used as a porous metal-organic framework carrier, and lauric acid (LA) was used as the organic PCM. LA was incorporated into MIL-101 and MIL-101-NH₂ through solution impregnation to construct shape-stable composite phase change materials (CPCMs). The optimized LA/MIL-101-NH₂-3 sample exhibited a thermal conductivity of 0.818 W/m·K, which is 337% higher than that of pure LA (0.187 W/m·K), while maintaining a melting enthalpy of 69.4 J/g. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations further revealed that amino groups on the MIL-101-NH₂ framework form abundant hydrogen bonds with the carboxyl groups of LA, strengthen interfacial phonon coupling, and reduce interfacial thermal resistance. Post-impregnation pore analysis, leakage tests, thermal cycling, and thermal management experiments jointly confirm that the improved performance originates from the synergistic effects of pore confinement, amino-mediated interfacial interactions, and continuous MOF-assisted heat-transfer pathways. This work provides experimental evidence and molecular-level insight for the rational design of MOF-based CPCMs for thermal energy management and broader low-temperature latent heat storage applications.

Modulation of the driving forces for adsorption on MIL-101 analogues by decoration with sulfonic acid functional groups: superior selective adsorption of hazardous anionic dyes

Ji-Min Yang,Wei Zhang,Run-Zhi Zhang,Meng-Xuan Tong

Toxic dyes pose a dramatic threat to human health and the environment when they are directly released into the water environment. Therefore, new porous materials with excellent adsorption performances are urgently needed to remove toxic dyes from wastewater. Herein, we report a sulfo-modified metal–organic framework (MIL-101-SO3H), which exhibits superior adsorption performance toward toxic dyes. The free –SO3H groups were successfully introduced into the MIL-101(Cr) skeleton to modulate the adsorption driving forces (i.e., hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attractions, and π–π stacking interactions together with adsorption spaces and steric hindrance) between the toxic dyes and MIL-101-SO3H adsorbent by varying the monosodium 2-sulfoterephthalic acid-to-terephthalic acid molar ratio in the reaction mixture. The experimental adsorption uptake by MIL-101-SO3H-1 was found to be 688.9 (methyl orange), 2592.7 (Congo red), and 213.2 (acid chrome blue K, AC) mg g−1, which was respectively 69.6, 89.6, and 51.5% higher than those of undecorated MIL-101. This adsorption behavior was attributed to the dye molecular structure, pore volumes, surface charge status, and functional groups of the adsorbents as well as the adsorption capacity of the dyes. The results revealed that the uncoordinated –SO3H groups increased the electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding between the MIL-101-SO3H adsorbent and linear anionic dyes. This increased the adsorption capacity toward the linear anionic dyes, overriding the effect of the pore volumes. On the other hand, the steric hindrance between the nonlinear anionic dye AC and MIL-101-SO3H adsorbent decreased the AC adsorption uptake of the latter, overriding the effects of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. In addition, the adsorption performance toward the cationic dye methylene blue increased, owing to the hydrogen bonding interactions, thereby overriding the effect of electrostatic repulsion and adsorption spaces. Thus, it is concluded that the adsorption behavior of the modified MIL-101-SO3H adsorbent is governed by the synergetic interplay between the electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π–π stacking interactions as well as the steric hindrance and pore volumes of the adsorbent.

Efficient removal of toxic methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution using a metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101(Fe): isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

Abdelazeem S. Eltaweil,Eman M. Abd El-Monaem,Ahmed M. Omer,Randa E. Khalifa,Mona M. Abd El-Latif,Gehan M. El-Subruiti

MIL-101(Fe) iron-benzene dicarboxylate based metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized via a solvothermal method for adsorptive removal of cationic methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution. The prepared MIL-101(Fe) was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis tools. Various parameters affecting the removal efficiency were deliberated such as pH medium, contact time, solution temperature, MOF dosage, and initial MB dye concentrations. Results showed that MIL-101(Fe) has a maximum adsorption capacity of 58.82 mg/g at pH 9. Moreover, data obtained from isotherm studies were more fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (R 2 = 0.997), while the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic studies proved that the adsorption process of MB dye onto MIL-101(Fe) was spontaneous and endothermic. Besides, MIL-101(Fe) showed higher adsorption ability towards cationic MB dye compared to the anionic methyl orange dye. Finally, the MIL-101(Fe) adsorbent showed excellent reusability for removing MB dye with efficiency exceeded 70% after ten consecutive cycles. Therefore, the as-prepared MIL- 101(Fe) could be applied as a reusable adsorbent for removing cationic dyes from their aqueous solutions.

Molecular encapsulation of 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis (4-methylphenyl) porphyrinato iron (III) chloride (FeTPP) into MIL-101(Cr) for superior CO2/N2 separation performance

Guangping Lei,Yang Lu,Zihan Liu,Yayun Zhang,Guojun Xi,Huiyuan Cheng,Wenji Rao,Xuhuan Guo

The greenhouse effect associated with excessive CO 2 emission has led to a series of environmental issues, thus developing excellent adsorbents for CO 2 capture from flue gas offers a sustainable approach. To combine the merit of multiple functional components, novel FeTPP@MIL-101(Cr) was prepared by incorporation of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-methylphenyl)porphyrinato iron (III) chloride (FeTPP) into MIL-101(Cr) cages via in-situ packaging strategy. The cage-confined FeTPP can both regulate the pore structures of MIL-101(Cr) and provide additional binding sites for CO 2 adsorption. Profiting from extra interactions for CO 2 component and the “sieving effect” for N 2 component induced by incorporation of FeTPP, the discrepancy of isosteric heat for CO 2 and N 2 was largely amplified. Notably, the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (15/85, v / v ) calculated by ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) increased from 17.1 (MIL-101 (Cr)) to 41.8 (FeTPP@MIL-101 (Cr) with FeTPP loading of 4.98 wt%) at 273 K, 100 kPa, which is 2.44 times larger than that of pristine MIL-101 (Cr) and also exceeds most reported adsorbents.

Melamine/MIL-101(Fe)-derived magnetic carbon nanotube-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon materials as sorbent for rapid removal of organic dyes from environmental water sample

Peige Qin,Dengke Chen,Mengyuan Li,Dan Li,Yanmei Gao,Shiping Zhu,Mengyao Mu,Minghua Lu

In this work, a magnetic carbon nanotube-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon (CNT/Fe@N-C) composite was successfully prepared by carbonization of melamine and MIL-101(Fe) under inert atmosphere at 900 °C. In order to study the removal performance of adsorbents for the organic dyes, different mass ratios melamine/MIL-101-derived CNT/Fe@N-C were prepared. The results show that the as-prepared CNT/Fe@N-C material delivers a high performance for removal of organic dyes (Rhodamine B, malachite green, and methyl orange) with mass ratio of MIL-101(Fe) and melamine at 1:3. The experimental parameters including amount of adsorbent, pH, contact time, and initial concentration of organic dyes were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the maximum adsorption amount of CNT/Fe@N-C for three dyes are in the range of 182.1–196.5 mg/g. The adsorption process of three dyes on the CNT/Fe@N-C material was consistent with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. The results indicate that the adsorption may be the monolayer chemisorption process. The adsorption mechanism of organic dyes on the adsorbent material is may be due to the electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking interaction. Finally, the CNT/Fe@N-C material can be reused 5 times without a significant reduction in the removal rate. The results indicate that the CNT/Fe@N-C material is a promising sorbent for removing organic dyes. This work provides a new strategy to prepare CNT/metal@N-doped carbon material with excellent adsorption properties from nitrogen-free raw MOF materials by calcining a mixture of MOF and melamine at high temperature.

MIL-101(Cr)-induced nano-optical sensor for ultra-sensitive detection of enrofloxacin in aquatic products using a fluorescence turn-on mechanism via upconversion nanoparticles

Xiaodan Ding,Waqas Ahmad,Muhammad Zareef,Yawen Rong,Yunlian Zhang,Jizhong Wu,Qin Ouyang,Quansheng Chen

In this study, an ultra-sensitive and selective biosensor for the detection of enrofloxacin (ENR) in complex matrices has been established. The study intelligently converges the spectral properties of core-shell upconverted nanoparticles (UCNPs) and the excellent adsorption satiating aptitudes of metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The principle was based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between aptamer-modified UCNPs as the donors and MOFs MIL-101(Cr) as the effective receptors. The spectral overlap between UCNPs fluorescence emission and MIL-101(Cr) absorption generated the FRET process under the action of π-π stacking interactions. The presence of ENR induced conformational changes in the aptamer via preferential binding, resulting in a decline in the nucleobase exposure on the surface of MIL-101(Cr) and eventually in the fluorescence recovery. The fluorescence intensity (FL) was enhanced as the ENR concentration was increased. The detection limit was 0.034 ng⋅mL −1 and the linear calibration curve between logarithmic ENR concentration and FL was achieved in the range of 0.1–1000 ng⋅mL −1 . The applicability of the platform for ENR recognition was confirmed in real fish and shrimp samples and further validated by a standard HPLC technique with no significant difference (p > 0.05). The current UCNPs-MIL-101(Cr) aptasensor proposes a fast, sensitive and quantitative detection approach for ENR in aquatic products.

Synthesis of a magnetic SiO2-HPW12O40@Fe3O4/EN-MIL-101(Cr) catalyst as core-shell nanoparticles and determination of losartan using modified glassy carbon electrode

Milad Taheri

The synthesis and properties of new hybrid core-shell nanoparticles SiO2-HPW12O40@Fe3O4/EN-MIL-101(Cr) are reported. These hybrid nanomaterials were synthesized by binding of Keggin-type heteropolyacid (HPA) on diamine-activated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. The present work proposes an electroanalytical method for selective determination of losartan antihypertensive drug (LOS). Under optimal conditions, an electrochemical sensor was performed between the molecules in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (PBS) pH 6.0. Heterogeneous nanocatalysts can be easily separated from the reaction mixture using a magnet and used multiple times. The structure of the synthesized nanocatalyst was determined by various physicochemical techniques such as TEM, SEM, XRD, EDAX, TGA, and AFM.

A novel fabrication of [Fe(HB(pz)3)2]@MIL-101 hybrid material via diffusion and the lower temperature shift on its spin transition behavior

Zhao Tian,Dong Ming,Zhao Yi

[Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ], a well-studied spin-crossover (SCO) complex, has been entrapped in NH 2 -MIL-101(Al) metal–organic framework (MOF) via gas diffusion method. [Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ] would sublimate when temperature exceeds 100 °C, especially at low pressure. Thus, in the selected condition, [Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ] molecules can be sublimated to a gas phase and diffused into the pores of NH 2 -MIL-101(Al), which yield [Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ]@MIL-101 hybrid materials. The identity of composites, with a loading of iron complex at ~ 8 wt%, was characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic attestation. The hybrid materials demonstrate a gentle spin transition curve from 300 to 400 K, which is different from the SCO behavior of [Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ]. And for the pure [Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ] sample at 400 K, only 60% of Fe(II) is in HS, while in hybrid samples, HS state is complete. This interesting phenomenon might indicate that the spin transition in the hybrid sample can be triggered at lower temperature. The composite samples were thoroughly studied by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, atom absorption spectroscopy, nitrogen physisorption, and magnetic measurements. Thereby, a novel MOF-based material with isolated SCO units is proposed, which demonstrate a salient ‘matrix-effect’ on spin-crossover behavior of [Fe(HB(pz) 3 ) 2 ].

Solid-phase microextraction of antibiotics from fish muscle by using MIL-101(Cr)NH2-polyacrylonitrile fiber and their identification by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Sandip Mondal,Jianqiao Xu,Guosheng Chen,Siming Huang,Chuyu Huang,Li Yin,Gangfeng Ouyang

Antibiotics are a group of antibacterial drugs used in the treatment and prevention of bacterial diseases in humans, veterinary animals, and farmed fish. Inappropriate and excessive use of antibiotic therapy leads to antibiotic fragment in the water bodies thus affect the aquatic organisms . In this study, an amino group modified high surface area metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 was used to prepare solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber to detect four different classes (total 6 ABs) of antibiotics for the first time from living tilapia fish ( Oreochromis mossambicus) by coupling SPME with high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The extraction efficiencies of the custom-made fiber were superior as compared with the commercial C18, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), PDMS/divinylbenzene (DVB) and polyacrylate fibers. The custom-made fiber also exhibited excellent reproducibility with the low intra-fiber relative standard deviations (RSDs 1.5%–8.3%) and inter-fiber RSDs (7.3%–14.5%), which made it ideal for in vivo extraction in fish muscle. The as-prepared MIL-101(Cr)-NH 2 fiber was then used to determine antibiotics in the dorsal-epaxial muscle of living fish. Comparing to the traditional solid-liquid extraction (SLE) method, the SPME method showed reduced invasiveness and higher sensitivity than the SLE method. In general, this study explored a convenient, cost-effective and highly sensitive SPME method based on amino modified MOF for in vivo antibiotic detection in fish muscle.

Synthesis of nanoscale titania embedded in MIL-101 for the adsorption and degradation of volatile pollutants with thermal desorption gas chromatography and mass spectrometry detection

Yuling Hu,Zelin Huang,Langjun Zhou,Dongmei Wang,Gongke Li

Nanoscale anatase titania was embedded within the porous chromium terephthalate MIL-101 under low-temperature hydrothermal treatment. The metal–organic framework shell acting as host matrix can effectively prevent the titania nanoparticles from aggregating and enable a good dispersion of these nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction spectra, transmission electron micrography and X-ray photoelectron spectra clearly showed successful impregnation of the nano-sized anatase titania within the body of MIL-101. The resulting TiO 2 /MIL-101 nanocomposite was considered as bifunctional material with abundant adsorptive domains and catalytic domains, and was packed in a quartz tube as a convenient trapping and photocatalytic reactor for hazardous volatile pollutants. The composite showed great potential for adsorptive and photocatalytic degradation of these volatile pollutants, such as formaldehyde and o -xylene, which were online monitored by thermal desorption gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection.

Multifunctional Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate Fe 3O4 @AgNPs@MIL-101 for Pretreatment and Rapid Detection of Pesticide Residues on the Surface of Fruit Peels

Mingyu Zhang,Yizhuo Tian,Sijia Liu,Yu Wang,Haiyan Li,Yafei Chen,Qing Gao,Xinli Wang,Mingli Chen

A multifunctional surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate Fe 3 O 4 @AgNPs@MIL-101 was prepared. Rapid SERS detection of pesticide residues was realized by direct pre-enrichment and separation on the peel surface. MIL-101 has an ortho-octahedral framework and large pore size, which endowed Fe 3 O 4 @AgNPs@MIL-101 with the ability to rapidly adsorb and separate positively charged targets. The introduction of tannic acid realized the in situ growth of AgNPs on the backbone, to modulate the electromagnetic enhancement. Pesticide molecules were adsorbed onto the surface of AgNPs mediated by central S atoms, accompanied by the interaction between pesticide molecules and AgNPs, the corresponding SERS signals of different pesticides were observed. Together with the introduction of magnetic coating Fe 3 O 4 , the molecules were enriched in the hotspot and separated to further enhance the SERS performance. Magnet instead of centrifugation was used to simultaneously perform surface extraction and sample separation for a noninvasive, rapid, immediate, and portable assay. The method was accomplished in measurement of thiram and thiabendazole on apple and tangerine epidermis, and the limits of detection (LODs) were 20 ng/cm 2 and 4 μg/cm 2 , respectively. The recovery was reasonable, and it showed that the procedure is valuable for the rapid and nondestructive surface analysis of residual chemicals.
