The core-shell structure is always a greatly effective structure in asymmetric hybrid supercapacitor , duo to a high specific surface area and porosity that can accommodate partial expansion during the redox reaction. Herein, a cobalt-glycerolate@nickel hydroxidenitrate microsphere (CoG@Ni 3 (NO 3 ) 2 ·(OH) 4 ) with core-shell structure is prepared by a simple two-step hydrothermal method . The as-produced CoG@Ni 3 (NO 3 ) 2 ·(OH) 4 possesses extremely high specific capacity (265.9 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 ) and an excellent rate capability (with 75.5% of initial capacity at 10 A g −1 ). In addition, as an cathode material, flower-sphere-like Bi-Bi 2 Se 3 materials is selected to match a new CoG@Ni 3 (NO 3 ) 2 ·(OH) 4 //Bi-Bi 2 Se 3 asymmetric supercapacitor. It exhibits a specific capacity (125.1 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 ) and an impressive rate property (with 77.6% of initial capacity at 10 A g −1 ). Satisfactorily, the asymmetric supercapacitor device, which cleverly assembles by the above two electrode materials, achieves impressive specific energy of 54 Wh kg −1 at 760 W kg −1 , and a capacitance retention rate of 80% after 4000 cycles. The excellent performance of the asymmetric supercapacitor proves that the materials possess great potential in the energy storage field.

Pd is a highly active non-Pt anode in direct ethanol fuel cells, and its morphology and structural composition heavily influence its electrocatalytic efficiency. In this study, three-dimensional (3D)-hollow Au microspheres (HNPs-Au) as a support for the Pd monolayer (HNPs-Au@Pd) were synthesized using a simple template method and galvanic replacement reaction. The experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the presence of HNPs-Au enhances the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in alkaline media, improving the electroactivity of metallic Pd. Benefiting from the 3D-hollow-porous structure and the significant synergistic impact between Au and Pd (balancing the adsorption energy of the intermediate and reactant molecules), HNPs-Au@Pd achieves a 10.8-fold mass activity and a 3.3-fold enhancement of the specific activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction when compared to commercial Pd/C. The present work not only enriches the preparation strategy of porous metal materials but also opens up a sector for the construction of anodic electrocatalysts with a wide range of applications.

A highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) aptasensor for multiplex mycotoxins detection was developed based on aptamer-functionalized photonic microsphere array. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grafted covalently onto the silica photonic crystal microsphere (SPCM) to fabricate the SERS active substrate, on which the near-field enhancement can reach to 20 times analyzed by the simulation electric field distribution. Two dyes of 5,5′-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) and nile blue A (NBA) were employed to make the SERS nanotags on AuNPs that were modified with corresponding anti-aptamer sequences. A SERS assay system was established based on the competitive reaction between the anti-aptamer on SERS nanotags and the target mycotoxin towards the aptamer on SPCM. The developed method showed a linear relationship in the range of 0.01–100 ng/mL for aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) and 0.001–10 ng/mL for ochratoxin A (OTA), and a low limit of detection of 0.36 pg/mL for AFB 1 and 0.034 pg/mL for OTA. The accuracy of such method was confirmed by its good recovery ratio and high repeatability, and further verified by the classic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using naturally mycotoxins contaminated edible samples. The established method has a great application potential for screening mycotoxins rapidly with high sensitivity, low-cost and high throughput in the fields of food and traditional Chinese herb.

Hard carbon is one of the most promising candidate materials as the anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, we developed an effective strategy to homogenize highly conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a hard carbon microsphere (e-HC) to construct electron transport channels to improve the performance of hard carbon. The material featured a wrinkled hard carbon microsphere with built-in electron transport channels. Although the optimization made no significant changes in the particle size and the graphitization state for the hard carbon, the electrochemical performance was greatly improved in comparison with the pure hard carbon material without CNTs (HC). The increase in the electric and ionic conductivity was identified. The electrochemical measurements showed that the e-HC electrode delivered a reversible capacity of 335.6 mAh g−1 at 0.05 mA g−1, which was higher than that of the HC electrode (304.1 mAh g−1 at 0.05 mA g−1). The as-synthesized e-HC material exhibited a higher rate performance and a better cycle life than the HC material. The correlated mechanism for the enhancement was proposed in this study. The e-HC material can be used as a feasible anode for SIBs.

Fabricating high-performance enzyme reactors is requested for achieving efficient and stable bioconversions, but remains challenging, because few of them can possess high enzyme loading, sufficient mixing, and efficient mass transfer at the same time. Herein, we propose to develop a novel enzymatic packed bed membrane reactor (EPBMR) by integrating the advantages of both packed bed reactor (PBR) and enzymatic membrane reactor (EMR). A prototype study is conducted with the simplified enzyme-loaded microsphere-ultrafiltration EMR model (Mic-UF EMR). Invertase and dextranase are used in this work to produce glucose and oligodextran by hydrolysis of sucrose and dextran , respectively. Specifically, the use of microspheres can enlarge the contact area between enzymes and substrates and mitigate membrane fouling induced by free enzymes. Thus, Free&Mic-UF EMR (with both free and immobilized enzymes) exhibits a higher sucrose conversion rate (84%) than the EMR with free invertase (34%) and a negligible decline in sucrose conversion for 36 h continuous operation. Membrane fouling is ameliorated by alkaline cleaning and implementation of covalent bonding strategy. In addition, commercial resins with larger sizes are employed to replace konjac glucomannan microspheres (KGM) which reduce the pressure drop of EMR. Finally, by selecting the UF membrane with proper molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), the dextranase-based Mic-UF EMR system successfully produces oligodextran with desired molecular weight (Mw) and narrow Mw distribution. The outcome of this work not only offers a novel enzyme reactor construction strategy but also provides guidance for regulating the performance of EMR.

Real-time detection of herbicides has been a challenge for the application of metal oxide gas sensors. In this paper, we report the application of TiO 2 sensors with oxygen vacancies for the detection of isopropylamine . Spherical structure with oxygen vacancies was successfully prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method combined with ionic liquid as morphology regulator. The morphology and structure of the materials were analyzed using XRD, SEM and TEM. Further studies reveal that the oxygen vacancies in this material play an important role in the detection of isopropylamine. The sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, moisture resistance and long-term stability. The response is 61.7–100 ppm isopropylamine, along with fast response time of 22 s. It is noteworthy that the lower limit of detection for isopropylamine can reach 0.2 ppm, which is very meaningful to practical application of detecting gas residues. The excellent performance can primarily be attributed to the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies into the material, which increases the adsorption capacity of gas molecules. This new sensing design strategy offers a vital reference to extend the application of non-metallic elements doped metal oxide semiconductors .

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a toxic compound naturally produced by the generaAspergillus. Distillers’ grains can be used as animal feed since they have high content of crude protein and other nutrients. However, they are easily contaminated by mycotoxins, and currently there are no rapid detection methods for AFB1 in distillers’ grains. In this study, a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) based on red fluorescent microsphere (FM), is developed for quantitative detection of AFB1 in distillers’ grains. The whole test can be completed within 15 min, with the cut-off value being 25.0 μg/kg, and the quantitative limit of detection (qLOD) being 3.4 μg/kg. This method represents satisfactory recoveries of 95.2–113.0%, and the coefficients of variation (CVs) are less than 7.0%. Furthermore, this technique is successfully used to analyze AFB1 in real samples, and the results indicates good consistency with that of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The correlation coefficient is found to be greater than 0.99. The proposed test strip facilitates on-site, cost-effective, and sensitive monitoring of AFB1 in distillers’ grains. Keywords:aflatoxin B1;distillers’ grains;fluorescent microspheres;lateral flow immunoassay

In this study, porous starch/β-cyclodextrin microsphere (PCS-CD) was fabricated for the first time through the crosslink reaction between corn starch (CS) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) combined with enzymatic hydrolysis . The structure, morphology, particle size, thermal property and pasting property were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscope (SEM), laser light scattering particle size analyzer and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The results showed that the combination significantly increased the adsorption capacity of hydrophobic substance, which was evaluated by oil adsorption (316 g/g), and achieved an improvement of thermal stability (for an increased pasting temp at 86.5 °C) and shearing resistance (for a decreased breakdown viscosity at 148 cP). The water solubility index (WSI), swelling power index (SPI) and paste clarity were decreased after being crosslinked, but increased slightly after enzymatic hydrolysis. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and mechanism of curcumin on the PCS-CD were also evaluated. The results of adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption process could be described by Pseudo-first-order model and was controlled by two or more diffusion mechanism. The free energy calculated by adsorption isotherm model was 0.1017 kJ/mol, which revealed that a physical-controlled adsorption was occurred between the PCS-CD and curcumin.

Developing single-atom Fenton-like catalysts with the maximum utilization of active sites present an attractive potential in environmental remediation. Herein, the single-atom Fe and N co-doped hollow carbon microsphere loaded g-C 3 N 4 catalyst (HFeNC-g-C 3 N 4 ) was prepared by an innovative cascade anchoring strategy using polystyrene as the hard template, iron phthalocyanine, polydopamine and urea as the Fe, N and C precursor, in which the in-situ generated g-C 3 N 4 could not only effectively anchor Fe atom to create the well-dispersed Fe-N x active sites, but also accelerate the electron transfer in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Taking advantages of such sequential protecting strategy, the as-synthesized HFeNC-g-C 3 N 4 catalyst with single-atom Fe-N x active sites, verified by XRD , XPS and HAADF-STEM, could work as an efficient Fenton-like catalyst for PMS activation, which achieved almost 100% removal of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in 5 min with the turnover frequency calculated to be 34.6 times higher than that of the homogeneous Fe 2+ catalyst. The mechanism of O 2 •- dominated radical combined with nonradical 1 O 2 pathway was confirmed by quenching experiments and ESR analysis, which might be interrelated to the improvement of pH adaptability and interference immunity of HFeNC-g-C 3 N 4 /PMS system. Overall, the present findings provided an innovation strategy for the synthesis of excellent single-atom Fe based catalyst in wastewater purification.

High-performance cyanate ester (CE) resins with excellent dielectric properties are highly desired in the fields of information and communication technology . Herein, we present an efficient strategy for the preparation of low- k and wave-transparent CE resins modified with a novel kind of bismaleimide (BMI) hollow polymer microspheres (BMI-HPPs). Benefiting from both the superior properties of BMI and the unique hollow structure, BMI-HPPs can serve as an effective modifier to reduce dielectric constant (ε) of the CE resins and simultaneously improve their toughness. There are plenty of pendant vinyl groups and unreacted maleimide groups on the surface of BMI-HPPs, which could effectively copolymerize with CE monomer , leading to a lower curing temperature and better interfacial compatibility. The BMI-HPPs/CE resin with 7.5 wt% BMI-HPPs exhibited minimum values of ε and dielectric loss (tanδ) (2.46, 0.006) at 16 GHz, much lower than those of the pristine CE resin (2.92, 0.018), and the corresponding wave transmission was 93.8%–97.1% in the frequency range of 15–18 GHz. Moreover, the modified CE resin showed a maximum impact strength of 18.8 kJ/m 2 at 5 wt% loading of BMI-HPPs, which is 64% higher than that of the pristine CE resin. Because of low- k dielectric properties, superior wave-transparent performance and highly enhanced toughness , the BMI-HPPs/CE resins have great potential in the fields of microelectronics and aerospace.

In this work, W 6+ ions doped Bi 2 MoO 6 :20%Yb 3+ , 2%Er 3+ samples were successfully synthesized by a facile and modified hydrothermal method . The main morphology of Bi 2 MoO 6 samples were hollow microsphere structure assembled by nanosheets . The particle size was slightly increased as enhancing W 6+ ions doping concentration to 5%, then decreased as the doping concentration increased. Besides, doping W 6+ ions can increase the band gap of products from 2.65 eV to 2.71eV. The upconversion emission intensity of all samples was strongly influenced by the W 6+ ions doping concentration. The luminescent intensity enhanced with the doping concentration increasing up to 3%, then decreased when the W 6+ ions concentration further increased. Moreover, the intensity of red emission increased by a large margin than that of green-light region. Besides, the lifetime of 4 F 9/2 states of Er 3+ ions for Bi 2 MoO 6 :20%Yb 3+ , 2%Er 3+ , 3%W 6+ (τ 655 = 583.64 μs) had significant longer lifetime relative to the Bi 2 MoO 6 :20%Yb 3+ , 2%Er 3+ (τ 655 = 70.29 μs).

It is a challenging and valuable work to synthesize surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with low cost and high performance by simple methods, and use it to detect pesticide residues in food. Here, Ferrero® chocolate-like Cu 2 O@Ag microspheres (FRC-Cu 2 O@Ag) were fabricated by a facile in-situ redox reaction. Cu 2 O directly acted as templates and reducing agents to induce the nucleation and growth of Ag nanoparticles on the microspheres surfaces. The prepared semiconductor-noble metal hybrids of Cu 2 O@Ag were utilized as SERS substrates to detect 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and thiram molecules. The distinguished SERS effect was achieved when target molecules absorbed on the FRC-Cu 2 O@Ag composite. The substrate presented excellent sensitivity and reproducibility for the detection of 4-MBA and thiram with the limit of 10 −10 and 10 −9 M, respectively. Due to combining both advantages of electromagnetic enhancement of Ag metals and chemical enhancement of Cu 2 O semiconductors, the obtained FRC-Cu 2 O@Ag microspheres provided a SERS platform to conveniently detect molecules with thiol groups. When it was applied to detect thiram residues on apple peel and the detection limit was 1.2 × 10 −7 M, low than maximal residue limit (MRL) of 7 × 10 −6 M in fruit prescribed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
