Transition-metal doping in semiconductors is an important way to modulate their intrinsic properties or bring out new functionalities for applications. Here, elongated Mn-doped ZnSe1−xSx nanocrystals are synthesized through a facile one-pot reaction under mild conditions. These ZnSe1−xSx nanocrystals with a diameter of 2–4 nm have a cubic phase structure. EPR and PL spectra confirm the successful doping of Mn2+ into the ZnSe1−xSx nanocrystals, based on the corresponding hyperfine splitting constants and emission bands. The temporal evolution of UV-vis absorption and PL spectra indicates the growth-doping mechanism for the formation of the doped nanocrystals. Surface coating of these nanocrystals with a shell increases the quantum yield up to 35%. And the dual-function role of 1-dodecanethiol is confirmed in the formation of the elongated Mn-doped ZnSe1−xSx nanocrystals.

In this study, a novel electrical Mn-based film was developed for selective potassium (K+) separation, in which delaminated MnOx was obtained with the assistance of Ho3+ using a facile coprecipitation method and coated on carbon paper with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and graphitized carbon black. With the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations, it was found that abundant multiphase interfaces and lattice dislocations appeared on the bulk of Ho-MnOx. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis verified that the delamination assisted by Ho3+ increased the specific surface area from 110.3 m2/g (MnOx) to 166.8 m2/g (1% Ho-MnOx), which should be beneficial for the exposing of more electrochemical active areas and active sites for K+ adsorption and separation. Particularly, 1% Ho-MnOx had a high concentration of oxygen vacancies and showed a better K+ adsorption ability than MnOx. It was considered that the adsorption of K+ was mainly affected by the ion memory toward K+ for the 1% Ho-MnOx. In addition, the 1% Ho-MnOx film had good stable retention and regeneration capability for the separation of K+; after 10 cycles of adsorption and desorption, the film still retained 87.24% of the maximum adsorption capacity for K+. It is expected to provide an effective preparation method to obtain a high-performance K+ removal film electrode for the separation of K+ under a low concentration.

Non-homogeneous ozone-catalyzed oxidation technology is one of the effective ways of treating wastewater, the core of which lies in the development of efficient ozone oxidation catalysts. This work proposes the design and synthesis of an efficient Cu/Mn/Ce multi-metal composite oxide catalyst by metal salt precursor mixing-direct granulation. The effect of metal doping on the catalyst properties was compared using Density function theory (DFT) calculations, and the Cu/Mn/Ce co-doping showed significant charge accumulation effect with a low ozonolysis energy barrier, which is more favorable for the generation of reactive oxygen species. The successful loading of the main active metal components, such as Mn, Cu, and Ce, was clarified by systematic characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller's test (BET), and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal could reach more than 60% for the simulated wastewater. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization clarified that the degradation of organic pollutants was mainly dominated by the combination of single-linear oxygen and superoxide radicals in the catalytic process, and the possible catalytic oxidation mechanism was proposed. This work advances the development of non-homogeneous ozone oxidation technology.

The massive stockpiling of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) has caused serious environmental pollution. In this study, EMR, coal gangue (CG), and fly ash (FA) were used as raw materials to obtain the optimal mix ratio based on Design-Expert mixture design. The effects of activator modulus, liquid–solid (L/S) ratio, and curing temperature on the mechanical properties of geopolymers were investigated. The results showed that the compressive strength of the prepared geopolymer was 12.0 MPa, and the 28d leaching of Mn was 0.123 mg/L under the conditions of EMR:CG:FA = 0.43:0.34:0.23, L/S = 0.9, a curing temperature of 60 °C, and a curing time of 24 h. This indicates that the geopolymer is an environmentally friendly material with high compressive strength. The mineral composition of the geopolymer is mainly hydrated calcium silicate and geopolymer gel. In addition, a more stable new mineral phase, MnSiO3, was generated. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrogram showed that the peak at 1100 m−1was shifted to 1112 cm−1, which indicated that a geopolymerization reaction had occurred. Through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) analysis, it was identified that the geopolymerization produced a large amount of amorphous gelatinous substances with a relatively dense structure, the major elements being oxygen, silicon, aluminum, calcium, and sodium.

The impact of Mn-Sn 3 O 4 loading on the photocatalytic performance was discussed. The synthesized composite catalysts exhibited remarkable hydrogen production performance under visible light, with Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -10/CN demonstrating the highest performance. Characterization techniques confirmed the successful preparation of the catalysts, and the light absorption capacity, charge separation and transport efficiency of Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -10/CN are significantly improved compared to catalysts with other ratios. This study developed a Mn-Sn 3 O 4 -x/CN composite catalyst with high stability and good hydrogen production rate. It provides further directions for the research of g-C 3 N 4 -based composite catalysts.

Microwave-assisted processing has shown tremendous promise in accelerating chemical reactions and reducing energy consumption through targeted dielectric heating. This study develops MOF-derived Mn-Co and Ce-Co oxide catalysts for energy-efficient benzene oxidation via microwave catalysis. The MnCo spinel oxides (particularly MnCo11-400) exhibit superior microwave absorption and catalytic activity due to enhanced oxygen mobility and tailored dielectric properties. Microwave irradiation enables rapid benzene mineralization over the MnCo11-400 catalyst, achieving 78% conversion at 30 W and complete conversion at 50 W, demonstrating exceptional energy efficiency at low power inputs. Microwaves significantly lower the reaction temperature compared to conventional thermal catalysis (ΔT = 100–250 °C). Stability tests confirm robustness over repeated power cycling (80% conversion retained after 3 × 1 h on/off cycles). Furthermore, an adsorption–microwave oxidation synergistic strategy is demonstrated: pre-adsorbed low-concentration benzene (1.15 mmol) at ambient temperature undergoes complete mineralization within 20 min under 30 W microwave irradiation. The intermittent microwave operation achieves equivalent benzene removal to continuous thermal processing while significantly reducing energy demand. This work establishes MOF-derived spinel oxides as high-performance microwave catalysts for low-temperature VOC abatement.

Arsenic (As) contamination poses severe environmental risks, especially for developing countries. In this paper, an innovative binary (Mn and -SH) multifunctional adsorbent, ZIF-67-SH@Mn, was successfully synthesized as a prospective absorbent to efficiently remove As(III) from wastewater. The structure of ZIF-67-SH@Mn was characterized before and after the adsorption of As(III) using SEM–EDS, FTIR, BET, pH pzc and XRD. SEM–EDS confirmed the successful introduction of Mn and S, BET analysis revealed a high specific surface area of 197.21 m 2 /g, and FTIR demonstrated the key role of -SH groups in As(III) coordination. These findings indicate that Mn oxidation and -SH bonding synergistically enhance As(III) removal. The leaching experiment showed that the release amounts of Mn 2 ⁺ and Co 2 ⁺ from the adsorbent within 48 h complies with national standards. Batch adsorption experiments determined the optimal conditions: initial concentration 1 mg/L, temperature 298 K, pH 5, reaction time 4 h, and using an ultra-low adsorbent dosage ZIF-67-SH@Mn only 0.2 g/L, achieving As(III) removal efficiency of 70.33% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 21.84 mg/g. The adsorbent achieved 79.36% As(III) removal efficiency in river (RW) and wine water (WW), with RW ≥ WW ≥ DI performance regardless of initial concentration. The adsorption of As(III) by ZIF-67-SH@Mn followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model, indicating a chemisorption-dominated and monolayer adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis revealed a spontaneous and endothermic process. The intraparticle diffusion model indicated that particle internal diffusion not only determines the adsorption process but also plays an important role in surface adsorption in the rate-determining step. The adsorption mechanism of ZIF-67-SH@Mn for As(III) involved electrostatic adsorption, multifunctional group interactions (including -NH, -OH, -SH), and oxidation. ZIF-67-SH@Mn exhibits excellent As(III) removal efficiency and is a highly efficient, low-cost adsorbent with good application prospects in wastewater remediation.

Mn–Zn ferrite (Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method at lower annealing temperature (minimum to 300 ℃). The experimental results and analysis indicate that these nanoparticles exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties with the ultra-high saturation magnetization ( Ms ) up to 45.1 emu/g, demonstrating the significant potential applications for biomedical industry, electronic devices, and wastewater decontamination, etc. More interestingly, Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 nanoparticles exhibit unique size-dependent magnetic property, where the saturation magnetization ( Ms ) decreases with the decreasing crystalline size. Furthermore, there exists a linear proportional relationship between Ms and the reciprocal of the crystalline size (1/ D ). A novel theoretical model is subsequently proposed in the paper to elucidate the size-dependent magnetic property. Such magnetic nanoparticles composed of small-sized nanocrystalline can be analogized to a “core–shell” structure, in which the surface or interfacial state increases rapidly in proportion to the overall system. The magnetic moments are irregularly arranged in the “shell” that consists of abundant surface or interfacial states, so-called ‘magnetic disorder shell’. On the contrary, the ferrite “core” is a ferrimagnetically ordered region with a regular arrangement of magnetic moments, which is called as ‘magnetic order core’. With the decrease of crystalline size, the proportion of the ‘magnetic disorder shell’ increases. As a result, the magnetic property of the whole ferrite nanoparticle is weakened. It is believed that the present works contribute to the advancement of comprehending the correlation between the structure and property in magnetic nanoparticles.

Transition metal sulfides (TMS) have garnered increasing attention in recent years as promising alternatives to traditional noble metal-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. In this paper, Mn-NiS2 nanocomposites were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The incorporation of manganese into transition metal sulfides improved the surface active area and conductivity of the nanoparticles, creating additional hydrogen evolution sites and enhancing their catalytic performance. The results showed that the Mn0.5-NiS2 electrode exhibited good catalytic performance and stability in alkaline environments. Mn0.5-NiS2 electrode showed an overpotential of only 111 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 (η100=111mV), while it could be operated stably for 100 h at a constant voltage density of 100 mV cm-2. This work provides a simple and feasible approach for electrocatalytic materials for effective hydrogen evolution in alkaline environments.

As commercial cathodes with the highest practical capacity, the structural nature of Li-rich Mn-based (LMR) cathodes, composite or solid solution, is still under debate. Due to the extreme structural similarity of two layered-phase components, namely, the monoclinic phase (C2/m) and rhombohedral phase (Rm), no single tool can resolve this concern alone. Herein, we combined multiple advanced techniques to comprehensively study the structural changes during synthesis of LMR cathodes from different aspects such as the elemental distribution, local structure, long-range structure, and short-range structure, revealing a clear process from the formation of two phases to the gradual phase fusion and eventually to a nearly solid solution. Particularly, X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis combined with theoretical simulations reveals for the first time that the transition metal (TM)–TM distance increases with the progress of the phase fusion, which makes the short-range structural change in TM–TM atomic pairs an effective parameter for judging the extent of phase fusion. Eventually, excellent electrochemical performance was achieved by balancing capacity and cycling stability through adjusting the phase fusion to a medium extent in lithium and sodium two layered-phase components. This study establishes an approach to investigate the structural evolution in the complicated multiple-phase system and provides valuable insights into the design and optimization of cathodes by tuning the phase fusion extent.

Zn coating is a typical anti-corrosion coating for carbon steel. Considering the sacrificial nature of Zn coating, it is essential to enhance the corrosion resistance for the long-term performance in the practical application. In this work, two-dimensional carbon nanoplatelets (2D-CNs) with nanometer thickness (∼100 nm) and ultra-large lateral size (10–40 μm) and Mn element have been successfully co-deposited with Zn onto low carbon steel by a simple electrodeposition method. Results show that the Zn-Mn/2D-CNs composite coating is composed of Zn phase, ZnMn 3 phase and a small number of 2D-CNs. The Zn-Mn/2D-CNs composite coating exhibits a modified surface quality with ultrafine grains and smaller roughness (Ra = 176 nm, Rq = 131 nm) when compared with that of Zn coatings (Ra = 798 nm, Rq = 684 nm). Besides, the inert 2D-CNs within the composite coating can act as the corrosion barriers. Therefore, the Zn-Mn/2D-CNs composite coating has excellent anti-corrosion performance, owning the lowest corrosion current densities i corr (9.2 μA cm −2 ) and maximum coating resistance R coat (1.2 kΩ·cm −2 ) and charge transfer resistance R ct (3.5 kΩ·cm −2 ), associated with its modified microstructure, Mn element with passivation property, and 2D-CNs barriers. These results demonstrate the desirable potentiality of inert 2D carbon materials in the electrodeposition of Zn-based coating for improving the corrosion resistance.

As a promising solid electrolyte, the NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 holds excellent application in solid-state sodium-ion batteries, which are an alternative to lithium batteries. However, its insufficient conductivity is one of the key factors impeding its applications. Herein, we report Mn2+-doped Na3Zr2Si2PO12, demonstrating enhanced ionic conductivity and electrochemical properties. We systematically investigate the effect of doping content on the ionic conductivity. The results show that Na3.4Zr1.8Mn0.2Si2PO12 has an extremely high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 3.3 mS cm–1, which is 4 times that of undoped Na3Zr2Si2PO12. According to the Meyer–Nedle rule, it can be known that as the activation energy decreases, the ionic conductivity shows a gradually increasing trend. Additionally, the Na symmetric batteries using Mn2+-doped Na3Zr2Si2PO12 exhibit improved cycling performance. The quasi-solid-state sodium–metal battery using Na3V2(PO4)3 achieves a high discharge specific capacity of 91.3 mAh g–1 at 0.1C, with a high capacity retention of 92.2% after 260 cycles, far surpassing the counterpart based on undoped Na3Zr2Si2PO12. This work provides an effective strategy for enhancing the performance of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 for its application in sodium–metal batteries.
