In situ generation of Ni/Fe hydroxide layers by anodic etching of a Ni/Fe film for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Ling Li,Jing Wu,Lieyuan Huang,Gaoli Lan,Naxiang Wang,Hui Zhang,Xin Chen,Xingbo Ge

Commercial applications of electrolytic water splitting require cost-efficient and active oxygen evolution catalysts. Nickel–iron (NiFe)-based compounds have attracted significant attention as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts due to their high catalytic activity. We develop a simple and easily controlled method by combining anodic fluoridation and cyclic voltammetry (CV) treatment to convert NiFe alloy to Ni/Fe hydroxide. A cracked layer structure of Ni/Fe hydroxide formed on the surface during the fluoridation of NiFe alloy and the CV process in KOH. The Ni/Fe hydroxide exhibits considerable OER activity with an onset potential of 1.47 V vs. RHE and a Tafel slope of 47 mV dec−1 in 0.1 M KOH. The electrode also shows an acceptable stability in alkaline media. The results indicate that anodic fluoridation and CV treatment are promising methods to form active layer structures of hydroxide on transition metals and their alloys, further increasing the electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst.

Heterogeneous Ni3P/Ni nanoparticles with optimized Ni active sites anchored in N-doped mesoporous nanofibers for boosting pH-universal hydrogen evolution

Changle Fu,Liangliang Feng,Hongyan Yin,Yuhang Li,Yajie Xie,Yongqiang Feng,Yajuan Zhao,Liyun Cao,Jianfeng Huang,Yipu Liu

Developing low-cost, environmentally friendly and efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts as alternatives to noble metals for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly essential for the sustainable advancement of green hydrogen energy. Herein, a novel heterostructured Ni3P/Ni nanoparticle anchored in nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon nanofibers (Ni3P/Ni@N-CNFs) is prepared by a facile solid-phase calcination protocol. The results demonstrated that benefiting from the intensive electronic coupling effect at the interface of the Ni3P/Ni heterostructure, the electron configuration of the Ni active site is optimized and thus the favorable HER activity. Furthermore, the N-doped carbon nanofiber scaffold with an extensive mesoporous structure endows Ni3P/Ni@N-CNFs with abundant electrochemically active sites together with excellent conductivity and stability, contributing to fast electron/mass transport. As expected, the resultant Ni3P/Ni@N-CNF electrocatalyst exhibited exceptional HER catalytic properties under universal pH conditions, driving a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at pretty low overpotentials of 121 mV, 145 mV and 187 mV in acidic, basic and neutral solutions, respectively, and retaining the catalytic stability for over 60 h. This intriguing work represents a fresh perspective for designing and exploiting highly advanced phosphide electrocatalysts for green hydrogen fuel production.

Defective Ehanced Subnano-Rh Catalyst Supported on an Ni@Ni-N-C Substrate for Highly Efficient Hydrolytic Dehydrogenation of Ammonia Borane

Lin-Chang Liu,Hong-Lin Zhu,Yue-Qing Zheng

Ammonia borane (NH3BH3, referred to as AB) hydrolytic dehydrogenation is regarded as a feasible strategy for hydrogen production owing to its high hydrogen content, pollution-free nature, and high stability. Metal nitrogen-doped carbon materials (M-N-C) are considered as an ideal candidate support of catalysts with AB hydrolytic dehydrogenation due to the advantages of low cost, large specific surface area, rich defective site, and good chemical stability. In this work, tubular Ni@Ni-N-C was successfully synthesized by high-temperature pyrolysis, and then, Rh nanoparticles were decorated on the support Ni@Ni-N-C by impregnation and reduction to prepare a series of Rh/Ni@Ni-N-C. The best catalytic performance of catalysts is obtained using Ni@Ni-N-C with an Rh loading of 0.74 wt %, showing a turnover frequency as high as 782.18 min–1 and an apparent activation energy (Ea) as low as 25.86 kJ mol–1, which could be attributed to the strong interaction between Rh and the defective site of the support.

Core−shell NiSe/Ni(OH)2 with NiSe nanorods and Ni(OH)2 nanosheets as battery-type electrode for hybrid supercapacitors

Leqiu He,Yan Wang,Yajie Guo,Guobing Li,Xubin Zhang,Wangfeng Cai

Novel core−shell nanostructure electrodes benefit from the excellent properties of their constituent materials, as well as the synergy between them. However, it is challenging to fabricate such structures efficiently. In this study, NiSe nanorods were fabricated using Ni foam as the conductive substrate and reactant via a one-step hydrothermal process, and Ni(OH)2 nanosheets were coated on the surface of the nanorods via one-step electrodeposition. The effect of the structure and morphology on the properties of the material was explored using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electrochemical technology. The obtained core−shell NiSe/Ni(OH)2 exhibited an areal capacity of 1.89 mAh cm−2 at a current density of 5 mA cm−2. The assembled NiSe/Ni(OH)2//AC hybrid supercapacitor exhibited excellent energy and power densities, indicating that NiSe/Ni(OH)2 has great potential for use as a battery-type electrode in energy storage systems.

Fuhuan Wang,Yucan Liu,Jiakun Sun,Hewu Wang,Dongsheng Ren,Languang Lu,Pengfei Yan,Youpeng Chen,Haoran Hu,Minggao Ouyang

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have gained significant attention as highly efficient energy conversion devices. Enhancing the overall performance of SOFCs relies on the development of efficient anode materials. In this study, an impregnation approach is proposed to improve the electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite Ni-GDC anode by modulating oxygen vacancies and Ni dispersion. This method successfully achieves well-dispersed Ni nanoparticles and adequate oxygen vacancies in the NiO-GDC anode, resulting in excellent TPBs and catalytic activity for SOFCs. The NiO-GDC nanocomposite exhibits a significant improvement in electrochemical activity, reaching a peak power density of 0.37 W/cm2 at 850 °C. Moreover, it demonstrates remarkable durability with a degradation rate of only 0.1%/h at −380 mA/cm2. This study provides valuable insights into the modulation of oxygen vacancies and Ni dispersion in nanocomposite Ni-GDC anodes, underscoring their potential as high-performance materials for solid oxide fuel cells. These findings contribute to the advancement of superior anode materials with improved electrochemical performance, holding tremendous potential for the development of more efficient and reliable SOFCs.

Enhanced catalytic combustion of complex VOCs over Ru/Ni-HAP catalyst: Insights into the synergic effects of Ru and Ni species

Yu Wang,Yijun Jiang,Yangyang Yuan,Li Xu,Wanting Sun,Si Wu,Qingmiao Wang,Ning Hu,Li Wang

In this study, Ni was severed as a promoter and impregnated on hydroxyapatite (HAP) to prepare a Ni-doped HAP support, and then Ru was highly dispersed onto the Ni-HAP through urea precipitation method. The synergistic effects between Ru and Ni caused a reduction in the particle size of Ru nanoparticles and an increased Ru 4+ /Ru 0 ratios, which was primarily attributed to the strong interaction between the active components and functional groups of OH - and PO 4 3- . Meanwhile, Ru/Ni-HAP possessed the highest amount of medium-strength acid sites and relatively low reduction temperatures, indicating the critical balance between acidity and redox capability. Ru/Ni-HAP exhibited superior activity with complete conversion of toluene at 280 °C and DCM at 400 °C, respectively, and such high activity can be maintained throughout the stability tests. Besides, optimal catalytic performance was observed under 600 ppm concentrations of toluene and DCM with a space velocity of 40,000 ml(g·h) −1 . These findings can provide valuable insights for the development of chlorine-resistant catalysts with promising application prospects.

Ni–MOF derived NiMoO4@Ni2P core–shell nanosheets on Ni foam via an ion exchange method for a high–performance pseudocapacitor

Honglong Qu,Tiantian Cao,Qiaolin Li,Gang Chen,Hongtao Guan,Chengjun Dong

Reasonably tuning the structure of Ni 2 P based complex electrode is decisive to boost its applications in supercapacitor. Herein, we demonstrate the design and preparation of NiMoO 4 @Ni 2 P nanosheet arrays with unique core–shell architecture on Ni foam (NF) for pseudocapacitor. The directly grown Ni–MOF on NF was used to couple with NiMoO 4 via an ion exchange between BDC 2− and MoO 4 2- , which is crucial to form a stable NiMoO 4 @Ni 2 P/NF core–shell structure during the subsequent phosphatization. The NiMoO 4 @Ni 2 P/NF electrode can deliver a high capacitance of 3655.1 mF cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 with a remarkable cycling stability (95.35 % over 4000 cycles). Additionally, the assembled NiMoO 4 @Ni 2 P/NF–2//AC/NF device achieves a stable working voltage of 1.7 V and delivers a superior energy density of 0.155 m Wh cm −2 at a power density of 1.705 mW cm −2 . The outstanding performance of pseudocapacitor is mainly ascribed to the stable diffusion channel, rich reactive species and hetero–interface, enabling fast electrochemical reaction kinetics.

Synergistic enhancement of size and electronic effects in Ni-based catalysts via Ni–Al interfacial interaction modulation for N-ethylcarbazole hydrogenation

Shiyuan Wang,Peiya Li,Shuhan Lu,Bo Wang,Qinchuan Shi,Jiahui Wang,Fusheng Yang,Bin Wang,Tao Fang

Developing both high-performance and cost-effective hydrogenation catalysts is of strategic importance for advancing the industrialization of liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology. Herein, a series of Ni-based catalysts supported on Ni/Al mixed metal oxides (Ni/NiAl-MMO) are prepared by in-situ topotactic transformation of NiAl-LDH precursors. The synergistic enhancement mechanism, which is regulated by the Ni–Al interfacial interactions and the anchoring effect of precursors, is systematically investigated with respect to the influence on the size and electronic structure of active metal nanoparticles, as well as on the catalytic performance in N-ethylcarbazole (NEC) hydrogenation. The results show that the optimized Ni/Ni 1 Al 2 -MMO-500 catalyst achieved both small size and high electron density of active metal particles. The synergistic size and electronic enhancement endow the catalyst with superior catalytic activity in NEC hydrogenation, exceeding all reported Ni-based catalysts and exhibiting catalytic efficiency comparable to that of the widely used commercial precious metal hydrogenation catalyst, 5 wt% Ru/Al 2 O 3 , with high catalytic performance sustained across five NEC hydrogenation cycles.

Photocatalytic inactivation of airborne bacteria onto g-C3N4/TiO2/Ni-polydopamine/Ni bifunctional coupling filter with non-size dependent capture effect

Linghui Peng,Haiyu Wang,Guiying Li,Weiping Zhang,Zhishu Liang,Taicheng An

Most commercial air purifiers rely on dense fibrous filters for bioaerosols control, which filter the particulate matter size-dependently without bactericidal activity. Herein, the non-size-dependent bifunctional nickel foam filters (g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 (CT)/Ni-polydopamine(PDA)/Ni bifunctional filter) with two layers of coupling nickel foams deposited by CT and PDA, respectively, were developed. The bifunctional filter shows remarkable non-size dependent bacteria removal efficiency (93.5 %) and inactivation efficiency (∼70 %) within 20 min at high airflow (12.5 L min −1 ). The inactivation efficiency can be further increased to 99.99 % with prolong irradiation time and enhancement of light intensity. The non-size dependent capture effect of the CT/Ni-PDA/Ni provided by adhesive force and charge was verified. In addition, the assumption that reactive oxygen species (ROSs) could be transferred into air during bacteria inactivation was first proved by chemiluminescent. This pioneered study may provide new insights into the development of bifunctional filters for non-size dependent capture and photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria in bioaerosols .

Promoted synergistic interactions between Ce and Ni in hierarchical porous Ce-UiO-66 supported Ni NPs for dicyclopentadiene hydrogenation to tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene

Fajie Hu,Rushuo Li,Danfeng Zhao,Xiubing Huang,Ge Wang

The hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) to synthesize tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (THDCPD) is one of the key processes for the preparation of high-energy–density fuels, and the development of low-temperature and high-activity Ni catalysts is still challenging. In this work, hierarchical porous (HP) Ce-UiO-66 loaded Ni nanoparticles (NPs) catalysts were prepared based on the soft template method and liquid-phase in situ reduction method. The introduction of mesopores into Ce-UiO-66 can effectively enhance the transfer and adsorption of the substrate, and Ni NPs act as the main active centers. Furthermore, the modulation of the electronic structure of Ni NPs and the promotion of Ce-Ni interaction were effectively achieved by changing the in-situ deposition conditions. With a low loading of 3 wt% Ni NPs, the prepared 3Ni/HP-UiO-66 catalysts could achieve the observed complete DCPD conversion and 100 % selectivity of THDCPD within 1 h and retained good cycling stability. The results demonstrated preferential adsorption and hydrogenation of the norbornene ring, confirming the reaction pathway of the 3Ni/HP-UiO-66 catalyst for the hydrogenation of DCPD. The present work provides a guidance for exploring and designing non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of olefins and aromatics.

Fabrication of a novel nanohybrid via the introduction of Ni/Mn-LDH into Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs for high-performance electrochemical supercapacitor

Tian-Li Meng,Jia-Wei Wang,Ying-Xia Ma,Xin-Quan Chen,Lei Lei,Jing Li,Fen Ran

Layered double hydroxide (LDH), as an electrode material, consists of positively charged layers and interlayer hydrated anions and is endowed with promising prospects in supercapacitors (SCs) due to its large specific surface area, tunable metal ions, abundant redox active sites, and low cost. Moreover, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit adjustable pore sizes, while multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) boast exceptional electrical conductivity. Hence, in this work, flower-like nickel/manganese layered double hydroxide (Ni/Mn-LDH) was introduced into nanohybrid of MWCNTs decorated with nickel metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs) to fabricate a novel Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid as electrode material for SCs using a two-step solvothermal method. In the composite structure of the novel Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid, the flower-like assembly of Ni/Mn-LDH nanosheets was seamlessly integrated with MWCNTs adorning the Ni-MOFs, creating an interconnected hierarchical porous network. This distinctive structure, coupled with the synergistic effects of its components, facilitated the swift diffusion of electrolyte ions. Furthermore, it enhanced the accessibility to more active sites at the interfaces during the redox process, thereby contributing considerably to an improved electrochemical performance. The specific capacity of the Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH nanohybrid as electrode material obtained at the optimal experimental conditions was 1151.0C g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 . The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) had an energy density of 25.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 845.3 W kg −1 . The fabrication strategy of the Ni-MOFs/MWCNTs@Ni/Mn-LDH could be extended to synthesize other nanohybrid.

Efficient and controllable alcoholysis of Kraft lignin catalyzed by porous zeolite-supported nickel-copper catalyst

Liping Kong,Chunze Liu,Ji Gao,Yuanyuan Wang,Liyi Dai

The alcoholysis of Kraft lignin was catalyzed by bimetallic Ni-Cu supported on H-Beta, HZSM-5, MAS-7, MCM-41 and SAPO-11 zeolite materials in isopropanol solvent. Results showed that a higher bio-oil yield of 98.80 wt% and monomer yield of 50.83 wt% without obvious char were achieved at 330 °C for 3 h over Ni-Cu/H-Beta catalyst. Isopropanol was found to be more effective in H 2 generation and facilitated to the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. Moreover, the composition of liquid products was also influenced by the acidity and pore structure of catalyst. The superior cycloalkanes yield was produced over Ni-Cu/H-Beta with larger pore size and more acidity. In contrast, a large number of cyclic ketones/alcohols and alkanes were obtained over other zeolites supported catalysts with smaller pore size and less acid content. Besides, the temperature, time and solvent effect on the lignin depolymerization were also researched.
