Fabrication of hyaluronic acid-based nanoparticles and studies on their radical scavenging activity

Huiqing Zhu,Suyue Xu,Guoshuo Shang,Xiaofei Pan,Jingya Zhao,Bingqian Zhao,Zeyu Sun,Xue Yang,Sisi He,Jintao Xue

The purpose of this paper is to study the stability, radical scavenging activities, and bio-safety of cysteine-conjugated hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (Cys- conj -HA NPs). Additionally, the feasibility of utilizing these NPs as drug delivery systems is discussed. The structures of synthesized Cys- conj -HA polymers were analyzed using 1 H nuclear magnetic spectrum ( 1 H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra. The stability, radical scavenging activity, and bio-safety of fabricated Cys- conj -HA NPs were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) photograph illustrated that Cys- conj -HA NPs possessed spherical shapes with an average diameter of approximately 230 nm. Furthermore, these NPs exhibited high stability at temperatures of 4, 25, and 37°C. Notably, Cys- conj -HA NPs demonstrated significant free radical scavenging capabilities. The high cell viability observed indicated the absence of cytotoxicity from Cys- conj -HA NPs. Additionally, bio-safety studies revealed that these NPs did not induce acute toxicity in the blood and viscera of cargo-free NPs treated mice. Elisa assays indicated that there was no significant difference in the concentrations of interferon-γ (INF-γ) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) between Cys- conj -HA NPs and normal saline (NS) treated mice (ns, p > 0.05), suggesting the absence of an inflammatory reaction caused by these NPs. Consequently, it can be concluded that Cys- conj -HA NPs are sufficiently safe to be employed as a vehicle for delivering oxidizing drugs.

Highly Efficient Hydrogel Oil–Water Separation Membranes Prepared by Superhydrophilic Graphene Oxide Brushes

Menghan Zhong,Qiwei Zheng,Ziyun Li,Shengwei Fang,Renfeng Zhou,Chao Wang,Yanlin Ye,Min Xia,Huagang Ni,Yanrong Jia,Peng Ye

Due to the discharge of oily wastewater and oil extraction activities, the oil content and soluble pollutants in water bodies are increasing, causing serious damage to the environment. Therefore, materials with superhydrophilicity and underwater superhydrophobicity have attracted much attention in the field of oil–water separation. In this study, a graphene oxide (GO) brush (polyacrylic acid [PAA], grafted on GO) high-efficiency hydrogel oil–water separation membrane with superhydrophilicity in air and superhydrophobicity under water was prepared by regulating the hydrophilicity through nano-microstructures. Vacuum-assisted filtration was utilized to prepare GO brushes into membranes. Due to the good hydrophilicity of PAA chains, grafting them onto GO sheets enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membranes and increased the surface roughness. This modification significantly increased the pure water flux of the membrane (maximum value of 428.56 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). With the synergistic effect of hydration capacity and layered nanostructures, the GO-PAA membrane possesses superhydrophobic and underwater superoleophobic properties. As a result, the oil–water separation rate of GO-PAA2 membrane was greater than 99.12%, which could realize the separation of various oil–water emulsions. Compared with the pristine GO membranes, the graphene brush membranes formed after PAA chain-branch polymerization have higher stability and durability, stronger hydrophilicity, higher oil–water separation efficiency, and better application prospects.

Hydrophobic Modification of Hydrogels Enhances Antibacterial Activity and Promotes Wound Healing

Dongfang Liu,Yu Jing,Guiwen Deng,Tingmei Huang,Liqin Huang,Mengxia Guan,Chunyan Lei,Yiwei Zhang,Mingjuan Chen,Keran Wei,Yuanyuan Zhang

The development of hydrogel wound dressings that facilitate rapid healing is a complex task, primarily due to the necessity of integrating multiple functional attributes, including air permeability, adhesion, antibacterial efficacy, and biocompatibility. In this study, we employed fatty acid-modified carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) to fabricate a multifunctional antibacterial hydrogel dressing. This dressing exhibits adjustable hydrophobicity, robust mechanical properties, and potent antibacterial activity, with polyacrylamide (PAM) and tannic acid (TA) serving as the primary constituents. The study demonstrated that the incorporation of hydrophobic structures significantly enhanced the tensile strength, compressive properties, and adhesive capacity of hydrogels. In addition, the release curve of TA showed that fatty acids played a vital role in enhancing the antibacterial properties of hydrogels, which may increase the release of TA. Furthermore, the length of the carbon chain has a significant effect on the mechanical properties and hydrophobic properties of the hydrogel. In summary, the TA/(C14-g-CMCS)/PAM hydrogel has excellent antibacterial properties, which can effectively prevent bleeding, accelerate wound closure, and promote tissue regeneration. Therefore, the TA/(FA-g-CMCS)/PAM hydrogel with adjustable hydrophobicity is expected to be the best candidate for accelerating wound healing and promoting rapid regeneration of skin tissue.

Mechanism Insights Into High-Performance Cu2+ Adsorption by ZIF-8/PAN Nanocomposite Fibers: Coordination and Ion Exchange Dynamics

Hailong Zhang,Ruimeng Li,Haishui Xu,Ling Quan,Chengyu Zhan,Peng Han,Kehan Xu,Yuping Tong

The accumulation of copper ions in the environment can devastate the ecological systems and threaten the health of organisms. Consequently, the development of effective adsorbents to extract Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions is urgently needed. Here, the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanocomposite fibers were synthesized by electrospinning and further characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). ZIF-8 powders were uniformly distributed on the surface of the nanocomposite fibers, and amide CO  NH bonds were formed between the  NH 2 groups of ZIF-8 and the CO groups of PAN. The ZIF-8/PAN nanocomposite fibers demonstrated an exceptional Cu 2+ adsorption capacity of 275.7 mg g −1 at pH = 4.0. The adsorption process adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption mechanism, as conformed by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, involves the coordination of the  NH 2 and CO groups with Cu 2+ and the ion exchange processes between Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ for the nanocomposite fibers. This study provides a novel approach for the removal of Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions and addresses the challenge of recovering powder materials in wastewater treatment.

Long lasting marine antifouling polyurethane coating chemically bonded with poly(hexamethylene guanidine)

Yufeng Zhao,Dafu Wei,Xiang Xu,Yong Guan

In order to protect the marine environment, traditional marine antifouling coatings such as tributyltin (TBT)-based antifouling coatings have been phased out. There is an urgent need to develop environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings. In this work, the antibacterial poly(hexamethylene guanidine) (PHMG) was introduced into polyurethane (PU) through chemical bond to prepare a green environmentally friendly marine antifouling coating (PU-PHMG). The morphology, antimicrobial properties, mechanical properties and thermostability of the PU-PHMG films were investigated. The antimicrobial rates of PU-PHMG films against E. coli and S. aureus were both more than 99.9% when PHMG content in the films reached 1.0 wt%. The excellent antimicrobial activities can be maintained for more than 90 days due to the non-leaching characteristic of PHMG. The growth of algae was also inhibited on the surface of PU-PHMG films. The PU-PHMG coating is promising for the applications in marine antifouling field.

Metal Complex Hydrogel as a Dual Functional Photothermal Platform for In Vitro Doxorubicin Delivery in Ocular Melanoma Treatment

Ping Xie,Jing He,Yangjun Ou

Photothermal therapy is a promising adjunctive treatment technique requiring a nanoplatform with excellent biocompatibility, photothermal stability, and precise targeting capabilities. This study aims to develop such a nanoplatform by synthesizing two new manganese(II)-based coordination polymers. The polymers were created by integrating 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene with the ternary ligand tris( p -carboxyphenyl)phosphane oxide, resulting in the formulas {[Mn 3 (L) 2 (bib) 3 (H 2 O) 7 ]·12H 2 O} n (CP 1 ) and {[Mn(HL)(bib)]·H 2 O} n (CP 2 ). These structures, with large surface areas and porosity, enhance drug loading efficiency. Doxorubicin (DOX) was successfully incorporated into a biocompatible HA/CMCS hydrogel-CP composite (HA/CMCS-CPs@DOX), forming a robust nanotherapeutic platform. Under near-infrared light irradiation, these metal-hydrogel composites effectively induced localized hyperthermia, aiding ocular melanoma treatment. We evaluated the effect of HA/CMCS-CP 2 @DOX on the cell proliferation of the uveal melanoma cell line, and the regulatory effects of the system on lncRNA ARAP1-AS1/miR-149-3p/S100A4 were also explored.

Miscible Polymer Blend Membranes Bearing Pyrrolidone for Fractioning Sulfuric Acid and Sulfates

Danni Yang,Tao Luo,Tao Zhang,Li Lv,Zongpeng Zou,Shengwei Tang

Ion exchange membranes of new chemistry based on polymer blends are proposed through a convenient solution-blending process using the hydrophobic commodity polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and the hydrophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which are completely miscible. The pyrrolidone groups can be protonated to form oxonium ions, functioning as transient fixed positive charges for fractioning sulfuric acid and sulfates via diffusion. The influence of PVC molecular weight and the membrane composition on the physical, chemical properties, and mass transfer performance of PVC-PVP blend membranes was systematically investigated. After equilibrium in 2.68 mol/L sulfuric acid, the sulfuric acid, and water contents in the blend membranes increase with the increase of the membrane PVP contents (20–75 wt%). The permeability coefficients of sulfuric acid and ferrous sulfate for the blend membranes also exhibit a gradual increase. Membranes of mass transfer properties comparable to commercial ones can be easily obtained by tuning the membrane PVP contents. It is proved that the larger sulfuric acid permeability over sulfates (FeSO 4 as an example) is due to both larger solubility and diffusion coefficient of sulfuric acid in the membrane phase. The optimal PVC-PVP blend membranes have shown nice performance in fractioning sulfuric acid from sulfates, when treating titania waste acid. This study provides valuable guidance for the design of high-performance yet low-cost ion exchange membranes with pyrrolidone chemistry from commodity polymers for resource recovery.

Optically clear pressure-sensitive adhesive with flexible crosslinking agent for high recovery efficiency, low energy storage modulus, and excellent folding resistance

Jinbiao Min,Jinqing Qu

Optically clear pressure-sensitive adhesive (OCA) possesses exceptional optical properties and exhibits pressure-sensitive adhesion, making it widely utilized in the adhesive layers of various electronic display devices. However, the increasing popularity of foldable mobile phones in recent years has imposed new requirements on the overall performance of OCA. Conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives can enhance recoverability through cross-linking but often demonstrate inadequate adhesive strength. In this study, three long-chain crosslinking agents (CL) were synthesized using hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate (HMDI), polypropylene glycol (PPG), polyether amine (PEA), and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (R45V). The long-chain CL agent contains numerous flexible segments that improve the recovery capability of the OCA while maintaining a certain level of adhesion. The optical clear pressure-sensitive adhesive, crosslinked by three flexible crosslinkers, exhibits a low glass transition temperature (−60 to −40°C) and a low storage modulus (<0.1 MPa), along with an appropriate 180° stripping force (6–8 N/25 mm). Optically transparent pressure-sensitive adhesives demonstrate excellent recovery properties (>85%), high light transmittance (>92%), and exceptional flexibility. Moreover, compared to market products, the optically transparent pressure-sensitive adhesive shows superior folding resistance (>100,000 times). This indicates its suitability for applications in flexible optical displays such as foldable mobile phones and wearable electronics.

Optimizing cleanup of highly viscous oil spills: A biomass-based aerogel with photothermal conversion and joule heating for a dual-energy absorption device

Jinghan Zhang,Weijia Zhang,Changhua Li,Bihe Yuan

The frequent occurrences of offshore oil spills have led to severe environmental contamination and ecological threats. However, traditional recovery methods pose issues such as high-energy consumption, low absorption efficiency and secondary pollution. This work prepared a hydrophobic aerogel (P-GO@CNTs-9/ATP/SA) using sodium alginate, attapulgite and graphene oxide surface-modified carbon nanotubes with superior solar/Joule heating ability. The water contact angle of this aerogel is approximately 147.5°. Moreover, this aerogel demonstrates stable and efficient photothermal conversion properties, reaching a surface temperature of 82.3 °C under one solar illumination (1 kW/m 2 ). Furthermore, when applying a voltage of 10 V, the surface temperature of the P-GO@CNTs-9/ATP/SA aerogel reaches 170.4 °C, assisting photothermal conversion to enhance the fluidity of viscous oil, thereby conserving energy. Finally, we present a continuous absorption device utilizing P-GO@CNTs-9/ATP/SA as the primary component, enabling automatic switching between photothermal and electrothermal modes for the comprehensive and continuous treatment of oil spills. Due to the unique design, environmental friendliness and ideal absorption capacity, this approach offers a novel choice for recovery of oil spills, which is expected to further promote principles of sustainable development.

Preparation and characterization of polyphenylene sulfide–based chelating resin–functionalized 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole for selective removal Hg(II) from aqueous solutions

Gonglei Shao,Junfeng Xiao,Zhihong Tian,Jiajia Huang,Siguo Yuan

A novel chelating resin (PPS-ATD) containing N and S elements was prepared through the chloromethylation of polyphenylene sulfide resin and subsequent functionalization with 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (ATD). The structure of PPS-ATD was systematically characterized and analyzed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectrometer. The adsorption performance of PPS-ATD was evaluated by batch methods at different pH, temperature, adsorption time, and initial concentration, and the results showed that the PPS-ATD exhibited high adsorption capacity (197.79 mg·g −1 at 298 K) and selectivity for Hg(II). The adsorption of PPS-ATD for Hg(II) was well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption process was endothermic. After 5 consecutive regeneration cycles, no obvious loss in the adsorption capacity of the PPS-ATD was found, which implied that the PPS-ATD had great application prospects in the treatment of mercury-containing wastewater.

Molecularly imprinted polymer nanocarriers for recognition and sustained release of diclofenac

Lei Zheng,Hui Wang,Xiaomin Cheng

In this study, a series of imprinted poly(methacrylic acid- co -ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) nanocarriers for diclofenac and corresponding nonimprinted polymer nanocarriers have been synthesized in 4 different types of solvents by precipitation polymerization. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement. Results showed that uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) nanospheres with relatively good porosity could only be obtained in acetonitrile. The effects of solvents on the recognition and release properties of polymer particles were also carefully investigated. The binding experiments indicated that MIPs prepared in acetonitrile displayed much higher binding capacity than other MIPs with a maximum binding capacity of 65.18 mg g −1 . The Scatchard analysis showed that synthetic MIPs have special recognition sites for diclofenac, while nonimprinted polymers have not. The Sips model could provide a best fit to the equilibrium data of nanocarriers over whole concentrations. The experimental data of an adsorption kinetic study were well fitted to the pseudo–second-order kinetic model, indicating the chemisorption mechanism between diclofenac and MIPs in the process of adsorption. The drug release of diclofenac from MIPs could well be described by the Ritger-Peppas model, suggesting a non-Fickian diffusion mechanism. In addition, we successfully used MIPs to extract diclofenac at low levels from fetal bovine serum.

Bio-inspired method to fabricate poly-dopamine/reduced graphene oxide composite membranes for dyes and heavy metal ion removal

Jing Ma,Yi He,Guangyong Zeng,Fei Li,Yubin Li,Jianfei Xiao,Shuizhen Yang

Due to the narrow layer spacing, graphene oxide (GO) composite membrane usually exhibits a relatively low water flux in the process of wastewater treatment. In this study, GO was reduced to reduced graphene oxide through a bio-inspired method, which was functionalized modified by poly-dopamine (PDA). Then a series of PDA/reduced graphene oxide sheet films were prepared by vacuum filtration on the surface of cellulose acetate membrane (under the pressure of −0.1 MPa). The result indicated that the novel membranes had an excellent stability owing to the cross-link of PDA. In addition, the hydrophilicity of membrane was increased significantly after PDA modification, which presented a superior water flux than pure GO composite membrane. More importantly, as-prepared membranes were successfully applied for the removal of dyes (including Congo red, methylene blue, and rhodamine B) and heavy mental ion (Cu(II)) from simulated wastewater. This work might provide a new method for preparation and application of GO composite membranes.
