Conductive Cross-Linkable PDMS-MXene Nanosheet Networks on Polyurethane Sponges as Robust Superhydrophobic Sensors for Human Motion Detection

Xiaojing Su,Weihua Yang,Zhenhao Zhang,Lexi Deng,Kunquan Li,Huali Xie,Yunhui Wu,Xiaofan Zhang,Wenjian Wu

Wearable piezoresistive sensors have aroused considerable attention for their huge potential in emerging applications such as healthcare monitoring and intelligent electronics. However, the fabrication of piezoresistive sensors that combine excellent sensing performance with outstanding working reliability in watery environments still remains challenging. Herein, a superhydrophobic polyurethane (PU) sponge was proposed as a piezoresistive sensor through the synthesis of d-asparagine-modified MXene nanosheets (MXene-NH2) and coating of a conductive cross-linkable layer constructed by dihydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS(OH)) and MXene-NH2 nanosheets. The microscale sponge skeleton and nanoscale PDMS-MXene nanosheet wrinkles formed a hierarchically rough structure in support of superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 160°. Benefiting from the chemically cross-linkable network and strong adhesion of PDMS-MXene nanosheet coating, the obtained PDMS-MXene@PU sponge exhibited a robust water repellency with water contact angles (WCAs) larger than 150° after enduring chemical and physical damages. Owing to the synergistic effect of the production of microcrack junctions in the PDMS-MXene nanosheet layer and contact separation between conductive backbones, the PDMS-MXene@PU sensor was successfully applied in monitoring full-scale human motions (e.g., blowing, facial expression, finger and knee bending, etc.) with excellent sensing performances of the gauge factor reaching −1.9. The findings conceivably stand out as a methodology to fabricate robust superhydrophobic piezoresistive sensors with desirable sensing property for innovative and broad applications even under special working conditions.

Damage detection of FRP structures using the electrical resistance response of MWCNTs networks in a PDMS film substrate

Ziju Wang,Lulu Yang,Shuzheng Zhang,Wenlong Hu,Chaojie Hu,Bin Yang

s To overcome the disadvantages such as local stiffness/strength reduction caused by the embedded sensors in composites structures used for structural health monitoring , we designed a surface pasting film sensor (SPFS) to locate the impact damage in glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) panels and composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV). The SPFS was made by printing MWCNTs/PDMS ink onto a PDMS film substrate. The relative resistance response (Δ R / R 0 ) of the sensing networks was recorded during loading. Sensing performance of SPFSs was evaluated by monitoring damages in GFRP panels with three different thicknesses and assessing three typical positions within a COPV. The experimental results demonstrated that variations in the load magnitude and position can be estimated by Δ R / R 0 shift of the SPFS. The newly designed SPFS shows superior accuracy in in-situ detecting damages in FRP structures. The maximum root mean square error for damage localization is 4.45% in GFRP panels and 4.27% in COPV. The presented concept provides a novel approach for early detection of damages in FRP structures, offering advanced warning without disrupting their inherent integrity.

Facile Construction of Chestnut-Like Structural Fireproof PDMS/Mxene@BN for Advanced Thermal Management and Electromagnetic Shielding Applications

Fuping Bian,Rui Huang,Xiaobin Li,Jiwen Hu,Shudong Lin

Composite polymer materials featured superior thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, and electromagnetic shielding performance are increasingly in demand due to the rapid development of highly miniaturized, portable, and flexible electronic devices. Herein, a facile and green ball milling shear method is utilized for generating MXene@Boron nitride (MXene@BN). The multi-functional fillers (MXene@BN) are constructed and incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a multifunctional composite (PDMS/MXene@BN) for achieving improved electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and thermal conductivity as well as flame retardancy simultaneously. When the PDMS/MXene@BN composite has a MXene@BN loading of 2.4 wt.%, it exhibits a high thermal conductivity of 0.59 W m −1 K −1 , which is 210% higher than that of the pure PDMS matrix. This is attributed to its unique chestnut-like double-layer structure. With a smoke production rate (SPR) of 0.04 m 2 s −1 and total smoke production (TSP) of 3.51 m 2 , PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 composite exhibits superb smoke suppression properties. These SPR and TSP values are 63.20% and 63.50% lower than the corresponding values of pure PDMS. Moreover, the EMI SE of the PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 can reach 26.3 dB at 8.5 GHz. The work reported herein provides valuable insight into developing composites with multiple functions, which show strong potential for application in advanced packaging materials.

Flexible Au@Ag/PDMS SERS imprinted membrane combined with molecular imprinting technology for selective detection of MC-LR

Heng Guo,Hongji Li,Mengyang Xu,Juan Zhou,Dan Zhang,Dandan Wang,Wei Sun

In this study, a core–shell structured bimetallic nano-cube, Au@Ag NCs, was prepared by seed-mediated growth procedure. The array structure of Au@Ag NCs was achieved at the interface through the autonomous assembly technique at the three-phase boundary. Employing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a flexible carrier, the array structure was effortlessly transferred to the PDMS membrane, bypassing the need for rigid substrates through a simple “pasting” method. This yielded a highly flexible and transparent SERS substrate with an array structure (Au@Ag NCs/PDMS membrane, AAP). In order to promote the selective detection property to the practical samples, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were coated on the surface of membrane to prepare the imprinted membrane (Au@Ag NCs/PDMS-MIMs, AAP-MIMs). It was demonstrated from the results that the AAP-MIMs exhibited high SERS sensitivity, stability, and uniformity. Furthermore, the flexible substrate possessed commendable mechanical strength, and facilitated the detection of analytes on irregular surfaces. In summary, this substrate held promising potential for practical on-site detection and analysis of specific target substances.

Interface-engineered porous PDMS-MWCNTs composites through HPC-mediated “sponge pump absorption” strategy for high-performance triboelectric nanogenerators

Luyao Luo,Bin Zhang,Yanzi Lei,Dawei Chai,Danling Zhang,Kuang Xu,Niandi Chen,Shiyu Hu,Hui-Ling Peng,Hai Wang

PDMS-CNTs composite-based TENGs exhibit promising potential in mechanical energy harvesting due to their flexibility and processing versatility; however, the inherent limitations of PDMS and poor dispersion of CNTs severely restrict their performance. Despite various modification strategies, existing approaches often compromise material properties, making it crucial to develop effective solutions for high-performance TENG devices. Herein, we introduce an innovative approach to fabricate high-performance TENGs based on porous polydimethylsiloxane/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/hydroxypropyl cellulose (PDMS-MWCNTs/HPC) composites through a unique "sponge pump absorption" method. Using HPC as a molecular bridge enables stable MWCNTs dispersion and uniform deposition within porous PDMS framework. The resultant composite foam exhibits exceptional mechanical resilience with 99 % recovery after 60 % compression and enhanced electrical output, achieving peak voltage and current of 149.09 V and 262.72 nA at 87 % porosity under 40 N force. The hierarchical porous structure, formed by unfiltered NaCl templates, significantly enhances surface charge density and charge transfer efficiency, while maintaining essential dielectric properties through HPC incorporation. The device demonstrates reliable performance in powering LEDs and exhibits distinct electrical responses to various mechanical deformations including stretching, twisting, and bending. This strategy presents an effective approach for fabricating high-performance TENG devices with great potential in self-powered sensing and sustainable energy harvesting applications.

Construction of PDMS@ZIF-8 composite membrane on PVDF hollow fiber inner surface for ultrafast ethanol/water separation

Wei-Min Liu,Xin-Ru Chen,Heng Mao,Shen-Hui Li,Yan-Mei Zhang,Li-Hao Xu,Zhi-Ping Zhao

Construction of ultra-thin and defect-free separation membrane on inner surface of hollow fiber supports is significant but challenging for molecular separation. In this study, the highly permeable PDMS@ZIF-8/PVDF composite membranes were successfully fabricated upon the inner-surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane for pervaporation (PV) ethanol/water separation. The efficient preparation of hierarchical PDMS@ZIF-8/PVDF composite membranes benefited from the precise regulation of ZIF-8 layer through interfacial synthesis and sequential coating of PDMS matrix. The thickness of the PDMS layer was only 16 ± 2 nm, which admirably eliminated the non-selective defects in ZIF-8 layer. Owning to the optimal combination of MOF layer and ultra-thin polymer layer, the as-prepared membrane exhibited the excellent ethanol flux of 1.34 kg m −2  h −1 with an ethanol concentration in permeate of 31.3 wt% for separating 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 40 °C. The separation performance of the resultant membrane was superior to that of the other ethanol selective PV membranes . These findings herein provided a new way for preparing high-performance hollow fiber composite membranes for PV separation.

A High-Sensitive PDMS-Based sensor with a Wide Sensing Range by fabricating refined and reconstructable conductive network

Shuaishuai Zhou,Huanhuan Zhang,Qian Chen,Qing-wen Yuan,Sen-hao Zhang,Nannan Bao,Jin-Ping Qu

Flexible and stretchable sensors are increasingly being developed to conformally attach to skin or organs for monitoring human activity. However, due to agglomerations of nanofiller, the preparation of a strain sensor for conductive elastic polymer with high sensitivity and wide detection range remains a major challenge. Herein, a conductive network is refined in PDMS/MWCNTs composites using an   elongational flow field. This well-formed 3D MWCNTs network endows the nanocomposite with a high sensitivity and wide detection range for strain deformation. Moreover, it exhibits excellent recovery and reconstruction capabilities during strain deformation, ensuring exceptional cyclic stability for the sensing material. In particular, the fabricated composite (4 wt% MWCNTs) with good tensile strength (8.1 MPa), exhibits high sensitivity (1151), a wide detection range exceeding 200 % strain, and good stable performance over 2000 stretch-release cycles under 30 % strain. Consequently, the strain sensor made from PDMS/MWCNTs composites can detect subtle actions and larger joint movements, exhibiting a good discriminative ability. In addition, the sensor is successfully applied to detect and recognize human lifting movements based on a big data model, highlighting the potential application in smart wearable devices. This work presents a new strategy for obtaining a highly sensitive PDMS-based sensor with a wide sensing range for human motion detection by fabricating an optimized conductive network.

Preparation and regulation of high-strength and high-permeability porous ceramic/PDMS composite membranes for gas-liquid separation

Wei Yang,Hao Cui,Mi Wang,Xiaohui Weng,Guolong Lu,Zhiyong Chang,Youhong Sun

Methane detection is crucial in identifying combustible ice within the energy sector. The gas–liquid separation membrane, a key component of methane sensors, plays a critical role in effectively separating methane and water. It significantly enhances the efficiency and stability of detecting methane concentration in situ. However, the related permeability and mechanical property present conflicting requirements in order to achieve optimal membrane performance. This work proposes an investigation into the mass transfer performance of a high-strength composite membrane, utilizing PDMS as the functional layer and porous ceramics as the supporting layer. By adjusting the pore distribution of the porous ceramics, particularly through the use of spherical graphite as a porogen, the study examines the impact of spherical graphite (SG) on the support layer’s morphology and its ability to regulate pore structure. Results indicate that incorporating spherical graphite with a porogen content of 10 wt% and a particle size of 25 μm enhances connections between ceramic grains, resulting in a flexural strength of 56.36 MPa and a permeability coefficient of 1861.57 barrer. This configuration demonstrates good waterproof and breathable performance. Overall, this research presents a novel approach for fabricating methane-water separation membranes, offering valuable insights for underwater methane detection efforts.

Scalable and lightweight MXene-Ni-PDMS/melamine sponge with super-elastic, hydrophobic and enhanced electromagnetic interference shielding performance

Hong-mei Zuo,Hao Yin,Guoji Yu,Hongjie Wang,He Wang,Yanxia Xie,Fangtao Ruan,Zhenzhen Xu,Lihua Zou,Dian-sen Li

The intensification of electromagnetic pollution has boosted the exploration of high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Herein, 2D MXene, 1D nickel (Ni) chain and PDMS were anchored on 3D porous skeleton of melamine sponge (MS) by a simple, inexpensive and scalable “dipping and coating” method, and a lightweight 3D hybrid nanostructure (MXene-Ni-PDMS/MS) was prepared. Super hydrophobic, high electric conductivity, excellent EMI shielding and outstanding super-elastic performances were obtained via the synergy effect of conductive 2D MXene and 1D Ni chain and hydrophobic PDMS. The results showed that the EMI of MXene-Ni-PDMS/MS with thickness of 10 mm could reach about 50 dB, which was 50 % higher than 25 dB of sponge with thickness of 2 mm, and could meet 20 dB commercial application. Moreover, the hybrid sponge exhibited super-elastic characteristics and could recover to its original state under 60 % strain during compressive fatigue. Even when it was subjected to 500 cycles at 40 % strain, the maximum compressive stress, Young's modulus and energy loss coefficient slightly decreased, indicating that the structure could maintain stable physical properties. The water contact angle could reach 145.1°, showing hydrophobic characteristics. This work offers a novel way for synthesis of excellent EMI shielding materials based on sponge.

Real-time in-situ thermal monitoring of gelation process of polyacrylamide hydrogel using PDMS sensitized in-fiber MZI

Like Li,Ya-nan Zhang,Mingyue Wang,Hongrui Zhang,Yong Zhao

Real-time and in-situ monitoring the gelation temperature information of the polyacrylamide hydrogel is of great significance for revealing its reaction kinetics information and regulating the performance and quality. In this paper, based on PDMS sensitized in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), a sensitive temperature sensor with a temperature sensitivity of 10.22 nm/℃ is proposed, which is used for in-situ thermal monitoring of the gelation process of polyacrylamide hydrogel. By establishing the gelation thermal curve, it is demonstrated that the gelation process mainly includes four stages: initial lag, rapid gelation, cooling stage and stabilization stage. Among them, the rapid gelation stage is the most critical, which shows the heat released in the gelation process and the gelation time. In addition, experimental results confirmed that with the increase of monomer and crosslinker concentration, the heat released during the gelation process gradually increases, but the gelation time is almost unaffected. Since the proposed PDMS sensitized MZI sensor has the advantages of miniaturization, high sensitivity, intrinsically safe, etc., it can be further extended to other dynamic reaction processes for real-time monitoring of temperature information.

The Dual Effect of Spatially Symmetric Polymer for Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells with Mechanical Robustness and Stability

Yingchen Li,Chao Liu,Hongkun Cai,Xiaoguang Luo,Qinwen Guo,Baoyu Han,Zhihao Hu,Juan Li,Jian Ni,Jianjun Zhang

The successful commercialization of flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs) hinges on their long-term stability and scalability. Surface defects and residual stress stand out as the main factors impeding their performance. These elements play a substantial role in causing perovskite instability, which not only undermines the efficiency of FPSCs but also expedites device degradation. In this research, for the first time, aminopropyl double-ended polydimethylsiloxane (AP-PDMS) is employed to passivate the surface of perovskite films. The AP-PDMS spatial symmetric part like “pincers” captures two Pb2+ and forms a hydrogen bond with FA+, thereby effectively relieving the residual stress. Moreover, the hydrophobic siloxane within AP-PDMS acts as a protective barrier, preventing water from penetrating the perovskite. This approach yields high-quality perovskite films characterized by large grain sizes, low defect densities, and excellent crystallinity. Consequently, the enhanced device exhibits excellent moisture resistance stability. The FPSCs obtained a champion power conversion efficiency of 23.32%. More importantly, these FPSCs show the mechanical robustness with T90 > 10,000 bending cycles (bending radius of 5 mm) and operational stability with T80 > 1000 h.

A facile approach to modify poly(dimethylsiloxane) surfaces via visible light-induced grafting polymerization

Xinhong Xiong,Zhaoqiang Wu,Jingjing Pan,Lulu Xue,Yajun Xu,Hong Chen

Tailoring the surface properties of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is essential for the advancement of its applications. However, the modification process is usually complicated and limited due to the chemical inertness of the surfaces of PDMS. Here, we report for the first time, a facile and versatile method for the functional surface modification of PDMS via visible light-induced grafting polymerization at room temperature. This modification is readily achieved in two steps: (1) covalently integrating alkyl bromine into the PDMS networks using a simple mixing procedure and (2) visible light-induced surface grafting polymerization using Mn2(CO)10. We have demonstrated that the PDMS surface can be functionalized with a wide variety of polymers via covalent grafting, such as poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PTFEMA), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc). As an example, after the grafted PVAc was transformed into its hydrophilic analogue poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), anti-biofouling functionalization of PDMS was obtained. The anti-biofouling properties of the functionalized PDMS were demonstrated using cell adhesion and bacterial adhesion tests. Moreover, the grafting kinetics of PVAc showed that this process was fast and efficient.
