Aiming to address the issue of PV efficiency degradation caused by dust accumulation on modules, hydrophobic coatings with high light transmittance, self-cleaning properties, and mechanical durability have become a research hotspot for PV dust removal. In this work, a nano-SiO 2 @PVDF self-cleaning coating was prepared via a spraying method, with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as raw materials. Combined with hydrophobic modification by hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and enhanced interfacial bonding by the γ-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560) coupling agent, the micro-nano rough structure and hydrophobic properties were optimized by adjusting the volume ratio of silica sol to PVDF. The coating exhibited a light transmittance of 88.5 % and a pencil hardness of 4H. After 35 cycles of sandpaper abrasion, its contact angle (CA) remained greater than 125°, and it maintained stable hydrophobicity under ultraviolet (UV) aging and pH 1–14 environments. Applied to PV glass, after 14 days of natural dust fall, the coating group had 28.2 % less initial dust coverage than the blank group, with a self-cleaning efficiency of 78.45 %, reducing dust-induced power loss by 68.3 %. This performance stemmed from micro-nano structures forming air films for water droplets to carry dust away, and PVDF's C F bonds protecting SiO 2 from UV degradation. This work provided a highly transparent, hydrophobic, and durable self-cleaning solution for PV stations in arid and dusty areas, alleviating dust-water shortage conflicts, cutting maintenance costs, improving efficiency, and supporting stable PV operation and the national “Dual-Carbon” strategy.

An up-scaling strategy to produce multi-functional PVDF membrane is highly desirable for both academia and industries. It is now reported that a novel silane-based interfacial crosslinking technique was developed to endow PVDF membrane with versatile superwettability, excellent protein desorption and antibacterial properties respectively. Prepolymers were first synthesized through the free radical copolymerization between crosslinker triethoxyvinylsilane (VTES) and N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), oligo(ethylene)glycol methacrylate (OEGMA), dimethyl aminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA). And then the superhydrophobic PVDF membrane was facilely modified by silane-based interfacial crosslinking of the corresponding prepolymer. PVP-VTES crosslinked PVDF membrane showed reversible separation performance for both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. POEGMA-VTES crosslinked PVDF membrane exhibited excellent BSA desorption. The halo zone test verified the good elimination to Escherichiacoli (E. coli) for the PDMAPMA-VTES crosslinked PVDF membrane. FTIR, XPS , TGA , SEM and laser scanning confocal microscope were utilized to investigate the chemistry and morphology of functional layer. All results demonstrate that versatile PVDF membranes with multiple functions can be facilely designed by the efficient interfacial crosslinking strategy.

NASICON-type ceramic electrolyte has been considered as one of the potential candidates for solid state electrolytes with excellent conductivity at room temperature and good stability under atmosphere. In this paper, NASICON-type Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) was prepared by a solution method and dispersed in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to form LATP/PVDF composite electrolyte membranes (CEM) by the method of casting. The effects of LATP filler on the structure, morphology, ionic conductivity , stability of the LATP/PVDF CEM were studied. It was found that the LATP/PVDF CEM had high lithium ion conductivity and excellent electrochemical stability with the electrochemical stability window up to 5.67 V versus Li + /Li. The discharge capacity of lithium iron phosphate cells assembled with LATP/PVDF CEM was 163.5 mAh g −1 and retained over 95.7% of its initial capacity after 50 cycles. The results show that the addition of LATP filler to PVDF matrix increases the amorphous phase of the polymer by acting as a gel center and the concentration of Li + is increased, which is beneficial to the synergism in the migration of Li + and enhances the ionic conductivity .

With the rapid development of electric vehicles, power electronics, and medical devices, high-energy-density capacitors have attracted considerable research and engineering attention. In this investigation, we added surface-coated BNT-NN ((Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3–NaNbO3) nanoparticles into the poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) matrix to fabricate BNT-NN/PVDF-HFP nanocomposites. We found that the composite with ultralow contents of BNT-NN (0.5 wt %) exhibited an ultrahigh energy density of 36.94 J cm–3 at 800 mV m–1, which is 17.5% higher than that of the pristine PVDF-HFP film. However, as the content of BNT-NN nanoparticles increased to 1%, the energy density decreased by 10.9% to 32.9 J cm–3 at 750 mV m–1. Compared with other PVDF-based nanocomposite films reported previously, this work shows a much higher energy density. This may be attributed to the largely increasing dielectric constant at the interface between the nanoparticles and their surrounding substrate, especially for the nanocomposite with a low volume content. The calculated dielectric constant from the theoretical model considering interface parameters fits well with the experimental data, indicating that the composites possess Kmax at ultralow nanoparticle contents. Therefore, the ultralow nanoparticle-added nanocomposites show great promise for ultrahigh-energy-density capacitor applications.

Sweat drop-based energy harvesting is considered an evolving technology that employs triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and biofuel cells to transform sweat droplets into electrical energy. However, the inadequate mechanical and electrical characteristics of hydrophobic triboelectric (Tribo) films produced using conventional methods significantly restrict TENG applications. Moreover, widely used polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based TENGs exhibit low charge density, limiting energy output. To address these issues, a Stretchable Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) Particle-Enhanced TENG (SHP-TENG) is proposed for harvesting droplet energy from human motion. In this design, PVDF microparticles are firmly bonded on a flexible substrate to form a highly stretchable hydrophobic Tribo layer with superior durability and charge transfer capability. This design increases charge transfer efficiency and structural durability significantly. The SHP-TENG exhibits high electrical output, even under severe deformation or abrasion, and continues to work reliably. It generates energy from simulated sweat flow to power wearable electronics, which demonstrates its potential implementation in health monitoring and IoT technology. Also, the SHP-TENG maintains excellent stability, with less than 20% output reduction at 500% stretch and only 11.9% performance loss after mechanical abrasion. The device represents a new method to harvest energy from biofluids through innovative materials and sustainable energy production.

There is a lack of stable and hydrophobic organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes meaning that their implementation in non-polar solvent nanofiltration remains a challenge, typically in solvent (e.g. hexane) recovery during vegetable oil production (e.g. soybean oil/hexane). Considering this, novel trifluoropropylmethylsiloxane dimethylsiloxane (PDMS–PTFPMS)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes, with both high hexane permeability of PDMS and excellent hexane stability of PTFPMS, were successfully developed to recover hexane via OSN. Their microstructure and surface properties were characterized by SEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA, XPS and contact angle measurements. We explored the effects of the ratio of the PTFPMS segment in polymer chain and polymer viscosity on membrane performance. With regards to the F50-M membrane, we also conducted a comprehensive study on the OSN performance of the F50-M membrane under different operational conditions. The oil rejection was above 95% with stable hexane permeability of 3.06 kg−1 μm m−2 h−1 bar−1 over a 32-day period. Experimental results confirmed its ability to recover hexane under various operational conditions, showing high oil rejection and excellent long-term operational stability. We attributed its outstanding performance to its unique microstructure and surface properties due to the fluorine-containing PTFPMS segment. This study indicates that fluoropolymer membranes are promising candidates in OSN processes, offering a wider choice of membrane materials and application fields.

The development of a low-cost and recyclable method for wastewater treatment has been a major challenge. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes have received considerable attention owing to their excellent mechanical strength , unique antioxidant properties, and low cost. In this study, Bi/BiOCOOH/PVDF composite membrane materials were prepared using a simple two-step solvent thermal method and phase conversion method. The results showed that under the synergistic action of adsorption and photocatalysis , the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Bi/BiOCOOH composite material and Bi/BiOCOOH/PVDF composite membrane material for ciprofloxacin (CIP) was much higher than that of BiOCOOH. The introduction of PVDF acted as a carrier, improved the adsorption of the catalytic material to CIP, and facilitated the effective collision of the photocatalytic active site and CIP. The experimental results and theoretical calculations confirmed that the combination of Bi and BiOCOOH effectively improved the light absorption capacity and photocatalytic performance. The reproducibility test revealed that the small amount of new composite catalyst for Bi/BiOCOOH/PVDF as a carrier was lost and that the Bi/BiOCOOH/PVDF catalyst still had high catalytic activity. In addition, the influence of water matrix factors, such as pH and anion, on the photocatalytic degradation experiment was investigated, which would provide some reference for the actual wastewater treatment of the composite catalyst. This study demonstrates a photocatalytic activation mechanism between metals and semiconductors and provides some basis for constructing catalysts for the synergistic and effective treatment of water pollution through a combined adsorption and photocatalysis process.

Solid electrolytes are safer alternatives to liquid electrolytes. Adding Ga to lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO) garnet-like solid-state electrolytes effectively improves their performance. The properties of solid-state electrolytes prepared using the two mainstream methods, namely, electrospinning and sol-gel, vary and directly affect the electrochemical performance of assembled batteries. In this study, we prepared Li 6.25 Ga 0.25 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (Ga-LLZO) nanoparticles and nanofibers using the sol-gel and electrospinning methods, respectively. The battery was also assembled with composite film consisting of the poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer substrate within Ga-LLZO ceramic fillers. The electrolyte of the battery prepared by Ga-LLZO nanofibers has better conductivity. We fabricated a Li|10 wt% Ga-LLZO nanofiber/PVDF-HFP/60 wt% lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)|LiFePO 4 button battery using the optimal concentration. The device demonstrated a stable cycle lasting up to 700 h, a Coulombic efficiency of 98%, a capacity retention rate of 96.5%, and an electrochemical window up to 5 V vs Li/Li + at room temperature. Over time, a suitable contact interface generated a positive feedback loop. The ionic conductivity was 1.1 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 . The newly prepared electrolyte films aid the fabrication of future solid electrolytes.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has broad application prospects in the field of dielectric capacitors. However, the low dielectric constant of the polymer greatly limits the improvement of its energy storage density. In this paper, a highly conductive two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene) is utilized to modify PVDF by doping to prepare PVDF/MXene composite dielectrics, and a PVDF/MXene model is established based on molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the microscopic mechanism of improvement in the dielectric properties of the PVDF matrix upon doping. Finally, the effect of the MXene on the thermal conductivity and the mechanical and insulating properties of PVDF was investigated. The experimental results show that the relative dielectric constant of the PVDF/MXene-1.0 wt% system at 100 Hz reached 14.54, which is 55.96% higher than that of pure PVDF, and this doping amount or lower can reduce the dielectric loss of PVDF. In addition, MXene doping improved the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite material to a certain degree. When the doping amount of MXene was lower than 1.0 wt%, the electric breakdown strength of the composite system was maintained above 245 MV/m, which is sufficient to achieve good insulation strength under most conditions. Highlights The low dielectric constant of polymers limits the improvement of their energy storage density. The doping of polymers with small amounts of conductive fillers can effectively increase the dielectric constant of the polymer matrix. A two-dimensional nanomaterial MXene is used to improve the dielectric properties of PVDF matrix and the micromechanisms are analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. The key properties of PVDF/MXene, such as the mechanical properties, thermal conductivity and insulation, are characterized.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SSPEs) in combination with an ultrahigh content of lithium salt would result in the poor membrane-forming property and mechanical strength of electrolyte member. To address these issues, herein, we construct glass fibre (GF) supported poly(vinylidenefluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) electrolyte membrane (GF-PVHF) with the mass ratio of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) to PVDF-HFP ranging from 1.0 to 3.4. When the GF-PVHF electrolyte membrane with 2.8 mass ratio shows the high room temperature ionic conductivity of 8.92 × 10 −4 Scm −1 , and presents the good flexibility and non-flammability due to the synergistic action between GF and PVDF-HFP. Both the assembled LiFePO 4 /Li and LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 /Li batteries exhibit excellent cycling stability, with capacity retention of 93.9% for LiFePO 4 /Li after 300 cycles at room temperature and 88.9% for LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 /Li after 100 cycles at room temperature. This work provides a strategy of designing SSPEs with ultrahigh salt concentration over 70%.

In this study, a series of three-dimensional (3D) epoxy resin/poly(vinylidene fluoride)/nickel–cobalt alloy–graphene nanosheet (EP/PVDF/NiCo-GNS) composites with high thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) were successfully prepared using a salt template-assisted strategy. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses jointly presented the successful modification of GNS and in situ growth of NiCo alloy. The cross-sectional morphological observations on the PVDF/NiCo-GNS skeleton and epoxy-based composites clearly showed the successful construction of a honeycomb-like heat conduction network. At a NiCo-GNS loading of 15 wt %, the prepared composites’ EMI SE could reach a value of 34.62 dB. The special structures not only perfected the interconnected thermally and electrically conductive network but also facilitated the multiple internal reflections of electromagnetic waves inside the composites. The present work provides an insight into the design of multifunctional polymer-based composites for electronic 3D encapsulation applications.

With the rapid development of the economy and technology, intelligent wearable devices have gradually entered public life. Flexible sensors, as the main component of wearable devices, have been widely concerned. However, traditional flexible sensors need an external power supply, lacking flexibility and sustainable power supply. In this study, structured poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composite nanofiber membranes doped with different mass fractions of MXene and zinc oxide (ZnO) were prepared by electrospinning and were then assembled to flexible self-powered friction piezoelectric sensors. The addition of MXene and ZnO endowed PVDF nanofiber membranes with better piezoelectric properties. The structured PVDF/MXene-PVDF/ZnO (PM/PZ) nanofiber membranes with a double-layer structure, interpenetrating structure, or core–shell structure could further enhance the piezoelectric properties of PVDF-based nanofiber membranes through the synergistic effects of filler doping and structural design. In particular, the output voltage of the self-powered friction piezoelectric sensor made of a core–shell PM/PZ nanofiber membrane showed a good linear relationship with the applied pressure and could produce a good piezoelectric response to the bending deformation caused by human motion.
