Improved hydrophilicity and antifouling performances of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane via in situ cross-linking

Ren Lulu,Deng Rong,Yang Jingkui,Li Jian,Jin Jinbo,Lei Ting

A novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) cross-linked polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) (PVA-β-CD/PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was prepared via in situ cross-linking in combination with non-solvent induced phase separation. Compared with PVDF/PVA blending membrane, cross-linking solved the issue of interface pores on the membrane surface caused by poor compatibility. And obvious cross-linking polymers were observed inside the membrane, which introduced more hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and thus enhanced the overall hydrophilicity of the membrane. When the PVA/β-CD ratio was 1:2, the cross-linked membrane exhibited better hydrophilicity, the dynamic water contact angle decreased from 74.6° to less than 2.5° in 65s, and the maximum pure water flux of 4561.5 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 (about 11 times that of PVDF membrane), BSA rejection ratio of 96.7% and a flux recovery rate of 93.5% were obtained. The mean pore size was 0.064 μm, and porosity was 78.44%. It could be concluded that in situ cross-linking simultaneously improved the penetration, separation and antifouling performances of the modified membranes. Our work provides some insights into fabricating high permeable and antifouling PVDF ultrafiltration membranes. Graphical abstract

Preparation and Characterization of UV-absorbing PVDF Membranes via Pre-irradiation Induced Graft Polymerization

Dong Li,Liu Xiang-Dong,Xiong Zheng-Rong,Sheng De-Kun,Zhou Yan,Yang Yu-Ming

Herein, excellent UV-absorbing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were fabricated through the pre-irradiation induced graft polymerization method. The PVDF chains irradiated with 60 Co γ -ray were modified with the polymerizable UV absorber 2-[2-hydroxy-5-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]phenyl]-2 H -benzotriazole (RUVA-93). The influences of irradiation dose and monomer concentration on the prepared PVDF-g-PRUVA-93 membranes were investigated, and the optimal condition was eventually obtained. The chemical structures of the films were studied by 1 H-NMR, FTIR, and XRD. UV light transmittance and DSC tests were used to characterize the UV-absorbing performance and thermal property of the PVDF films before and after modification. The results proved that the PRUVA-93 side chains were successfully incorporated into the PVDF main chains and the obtained PVDF- g -PRUVA-93 films possessed remarkable UV-absorbing property. The modified membrane made under the optimized experiment condition could completely block the UV light in the range of 200−387 nm. Additionally, the transmittance of the PVDF- g -PRUVA-93 film could be reduced to 0.04% in 280−320 nm, where the light irradiation could damage polymer materials most seriously.

Piezoelectric PVDF membranes for use in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and their antifouling performance

Peng Cao,Jinyin Shi,Jianwen Zhang,Xiaozu Wang,Jun Tae Jung,Zhaohui Wang,Zhaoliang Cui,Young Moo Lee

Membrane fouling is a common phenomenon in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), deteriorating membrane performance and increasing the operation costs of AnMBR. In this study, β-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat sheet membranes were successfully prepared by first mixing PVDF powder with ionic liquid [BMIM]PF 6 and subsequently casting them using thermally induced phase separation (TIPS), followed by high voltage polarization treatment to endow the PVDF membranes with piezoelectric properties . For the first time in AnMBR, we reported in this study on the piezoelectric PVDF membrane that generates in-situ vibrations to reduce membrane fouling by applying a given frequency and alternating voltage (AV). The results suggested that the steady-state water flux through the piezoelectric membrane in AnMBR operation increased along with the AV, enhancing it by up to 72.6% (at 20 V) compared to that of the membrane without applying AV. In addition, high water flux was obtained at the optimal operating frequency of 10 kHz when the cross-flow mode was taken into consideration in AnMBR operation in this study, although the resonance frequency with maximum amplitude of the membrane was 600 kHz. These results indicate that the piezoelectric β-PVDF membrane is effective at minimizing or alleviating the membrane fouling when the electric field simultaneously applied during AnMBR operation. During the 30-day operation of AnMBR with the β-PVDF membrane with poling, the COD removal rate was maintained at over 90%, even if the applied frequencies and voltages were changed during the operation.

Effects of modified nano-silica on the microstructure of PVDF and its microporous membranes

Zhao Meng,Ren Zhou-Zhi,Yang Ming-Bo,Yang Wei

In this study, effects of modified silica on the microstructure of polyvinylidene fluoride and its microporous membranes were investigated. The silica was modified by 3-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane to improve its compatibility with the polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The relaxation time of polyvinylidene fluoride was markedly improved by modified nano-silica, especially at the loading of 0.1 wt‰. Effects of the modified silica on the nanocomposite microstructure, such as crystallization and orientation behavior, were studied in the manuscript. Furthermore, adding 3-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane modified silica could effectively handicap the relaxation of orientation structure in polyvinylidene fluoride and facilitate the formation of uniform lamellar structures which could be described by two-dimensional small-angle X-ray scattering testing. Finally, casting films with more uniform lamellar structure was also in favor of fabricating polyvinylidene fluoride microporous membranes by melt-stretching method.

O-MWCNT/PAN/PVDF ultrafiltration membranes with boosted properties for oil and water separation

Temitope F. Ajibade,Jiaoxing Xu,Huali Tian,Lunhui Guan,Kaisong Zhang

Removal of emulsified oil droplets less than 20 μm and maintaining operational stability remains a key concern in the field of oily wastewater treatment. In this work, a major breakthrough was achieved via modification of polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylidene fluoride (PAN/PVDF) blended ultra-filtration (UF) membrane with oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes (O-MWCNT) to tailor the membrane chemical properties for boosted oil and water separation. Overall, a high separation performance of oily emulsion (99%) and simultaneous increase in flux up to 65% was achieved using the novel O-MWCNT/PAN/PVDF membrane. Moreover, the performance of the O-MWCNT/PAN/PVDF membrane was consistent after 28-cycles of oil separation and the antifouling properties were exceptionally enhanced by 96%. In addition, there was a significant decrease in fouling in terms of the cake, pore, and intrinsic resistance. Furthermore, evidence of even dispersal of nanofillers was confirmed by an increase of casting solution viscosity with increasing O-MWCNT. Consequently, this provides a remarkable mechanical/tensile strength of 5.94 MPa, and 16.05% elongation of the O-MWCNT/PAN/PVDF fingerlike structured UF membrane. The novel O-MWCNT/PAN/PVDF membrane demonstrated promising properties that balanced the membrane tradeoff between permeability and selectivity, as well as, improved mechanical strength and operational stability that can elongate the life span of the membrane in oily wastewater treatment.

PVDF-HFP/LLZTO composite electrolytes with UV cure for solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries

Gu Yuanchun,Liu Huaqian

Significant ultraviolet (UV) technology was used to create a new composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) membrane composed of poly (vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), benzophenone (Bp), and varying amounts of highly ion-conducting Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) particles. In lithium metal batteries, the CPE membranes demonstrated improved mechanical properties as well as superior electrochemical performances. CPE-15wt% LLZTO typically demonstrated the highest ionic conductivity (σ = 3.7 × 10 −3 S/cm) at room temperature, a high Li-transference (t +  = 0.79), and a wider electrochemical stability window (ESW) above 5 V, as well as good mechanical strength (8.2 MPa). More importantly, the CPE-15wt% LLZTO membrane inhibits Li dendrite expansion in Li symmetric cells and exhibits long-term cyclic stability with a current density of 3 mA/cm 2 over 1150 h for Li/CPE-15wt% LLZTO/Li. The current study demonstrates that a UV-irradiated CPE membrane can be a promising electrolyte for next-generation lithium-metallic batteries.

High-sensitivity PZT-OV/Ti3C2Tx/PVDF piezoelectric fiber for self-powered vital signs monitoring

Yucheng Lv,Tao Yang,Enhui Wang,Bo Shen,Kang Wang,Hongyang Wang,Kuo-Chih Chou,Xinmei Hou

Self-powered wearable electronics for real-time physiological monitoring require mechanical energy harvesters that simultaneously offer high sensitivity, flexibility, and power density, yet most existing piezoelectric nanogenerators struggle to efficiently convert low-frequency biomechanical energy under these constraints. In particular, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based composite fibers often suffer from limited interfacial charge transport and insufficient piezoelectric response, which restricts their use in practical, textile-integrated devices. Here, we develop a high-performance piezoelectric composite fiber, PZT-O V /Ti 3 C 2 T x /PVDF, by electrostatic spinning self-assembly of oxygen vacancy–engineered lead zirconate titanate (PZT-O V ), MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ), and PVDF. The resulting prickly-fibril interfacial structure between PZT-O V and Ti 3 C 2 T x enables ultrafast carrier transport and enhanced mechanosensitive, yielding flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) with a 15-fold increase in current density under compression. Optimized devices deliver a peak power density of 4.78 μW cm −2 , a sensitivity of 1.46 V kPa −1 , and an energy conversion efficiency of 14.8%. Integrated into wearable textiles, these PENGs harvest subtle biomechanical energy and wirelessly transmit data via Bluetooth, enabling self-powered monitoring of body temperature and heart rate. These results demonstrate that combining oxygen vacancy engineering with MXene-assisted interfacial design in electrospun fibers is an effective strategy for advancing high-performance, self-powered wearable biosensing systems.

Low-temperature direct regeneration of spent LiFePO4 cathodes via thiourea-assisted targeted PVDF degradation

Lei Gan,Weihao Lin,Weiliang Peng,Renzong Hu,Yuyin Li,Bin Yuan

Low-temperature liquid-phase strategy directly regenerates spent LFP. • Thiourea directionally degrades residual PVDF, promoting regeneration. • The regeneration strategy eliminates the need for autoclaves. • Delivers 131.9 mAh·g −1 at 5C, retaining 89.5% capacity after 700 cycles. The widespread use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries has led to an unprecedented surge in end-of-life cells, highlighting an urgent need for cost-effective recycling technologies. Although direct regeneration offers a promising solution, its practical effectiveness is often limited by residual impurities. Here, we report a low-temperature, liquid-phase regeneration strategy that uses thiourea to specifically degrade residual polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binders. First, a mild elution process separates the spent LFP coating from the current collector. The purified powder is then regenerated in a liquid phase, using l -ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and thiourea to drive PVDF degradation. This method simultaneously restores the crystal structure and removes impurities without requiring energy-intensive high-temperature or high-pressure hydrothermal conditions, thereby streamlining the process and significantly cutting costs. The regenerated LFP cathode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, delivering an initial discharge capacity of 160.4 mAh·g −1 at 0.1C, a strong rate capability of 131.9 mAh·g −1 at 5C, and 89.5% capacity retention over 700 cycles. These results demonstrate a scalable and economically viable approach for recycling spent LFP batteries. Download: Download high-res image (139KB) Download: Download full-size image

Polydopamine-mediated interface regulation and performance optimization of LLTO/PVDF-HFP composite solid electrolyte

Wang Dingqin,Fei Zihao,Zheng Deyi

Perovskite-structured Li 0.33 La 0.56 TiO 3 (LLTO) ceramic fillers are widely used for their low cost and environmental friendliness, yet their poor uniform dispersion in polymer matrices and inadequate interfacial compatibility between phases still limit performance. This study fabricated PDA@LLTO/PVDF-HFP composite electrolytes via solution casting, by modifying LLTO with a biodegradable polydopamine (PDA) coating. Dopamine undergoes oxidative self-polymerization on LLTO surfaces to form a PDA layer, whose excellent adhesion ensures firm binding to the LLTO surfaces, reducing filler surface energy and promoting uniform dispersion. Meanwhile, PDA’s phenolic hydroxyl and amino groups interact with PVDF-HFP’s fluorine and carbonyl groups via hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and physical entanglement, forming a strong interface. PDA reduces interfacial gaps and defects by acting as a “molecular bridge” to improve adhesion between the two phases. Results show the 2.4 wt%-PDA@LLTO/PVDF-HFP composite exhibits well-balanced electrochemical performance: an ionic conductivity of 2.37 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C, an interfacial impedance reduced from 367 to 167 Ω, a lithium-ion migration number of 0.81, and an electrochemical stability window expanded to 4.88 V, The critical current density reaches 2.297 mA/cm 2 . The assembled solid-state full batteries deliver an initial discharge capacity of 168.59 mAh/g at 0.5 C, retaining 148.80 mAh/g (88.3% capacity retention) after 180 cycles, with Coulombic efficiency stabilized at 99.6% and significantly improved thermal stability. This work provides new insights for developing high-performance all-solid-state electrolytes, which hold promising applications.

Study of stabilization mechanism—PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe³⁺ membrane achieving efficient volatile oil separation

Wenling Fan,Xiao Xu,Lingling Li,Long Sun,Chang Gao,Le Luo,Jingjing Zhang,Ziqi Sun,Ying Xu,Yutong Gao

This study elucidates the stabilization mechanism underpinning the efficient and long-term separation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) volatile oils from oil-in-water emulsions by polyvinylidene fluoride/phytic acid-polyethyleneimine/Fe3 + (PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe3 + ) membranes. Through integrated molecular docking and Schneider's thermodynamic analysis, we demonstrate that the exceptional stability arises from a dual-crosslinked architecture: (1) High-affinity coordination bonds between phytic acid (PA) and Fe³⁺ (binding energy: −5.2 kcal/mol; ΔH m = 1.05 × 10⁻³ cal/mol) establish a robust framework resistant to chemical and thermal degradation, while (2) Fe³⁺-mediated interfacial bridging—achieved through lone-pair electron sharing with fluorine atoms in PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) and electrostatic interactions with polyethyleneimine (PEI)—synergistically suppresses delamination. Experimental validation demonstrates exceptional durability: Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirm retention of Fe³⁺-phosphate coordination bonds and pore structural integrity following 24-h exposures to pH extremes (3–11), 100% ethanol, 95°C thermal treatment, and 0.25 MPa pressure. The membrane sustains >95% oil retention capacity and stable steady-state permeate flux (≈2750 L·m –2 ·h –1 (LMH), 2750 LMH·bar –1 ) throughout the 60-day cyclic operation (8h of filtration per day, with the membrane immersed in the turmeric oil-in-water emulsion during off-operation hours and characterized every 7 days). The high flux is attributed to the synergistic effect of the large-pore PVDF substrate (Molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 200,000 Da) and the superhydrophilic PA-PEI/Fe 3+ coating, Tests were conducted on 4 cm-radius membraneswith an effective filtration area of 0.005024 m² under the conditions of Transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 0.1 MPa and 25±1°C.With corrosion resistance demonstrated by negligible flux variation (flux recovery ratio, (FRR) <100%) when treating aggressive turmeric oil emulsions. This study establishes a dual-anchoring strategy that effectively mitigates volatility-induced membrane corrosion, thereby positioning PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe³⁺ membranes as an industrially viable platform for sustainable extraction of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) volatile components. Strong Lewis acidic AlF3 modified PVDF-based electrolytes for high-performance lithium metal batteries

Liangmao Liu,Hong Zhang,Zhicheng Li

● Strong Lewis acidic AlF 3 nanoparticles were synthesized and incorporated into PVDF-based electrolyte. ● AlF 3 anchors TFSI - and suppresses crystallinity to facilitate rapid Li + flux. ● AlF 3 modified electrolyte achieves high ionic conductivity of 3.10 × 10 −4 S cm −1 . ● Enables stable Li||Li cell cycling over 3300 h and robust NCM811 full cells. Solid-state lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) are promising for high-energy-density storage, yet their practical application is hindered by low ionic conductivity of electrolyte, poor interfacial compatibility and lithium dendrite growth. The poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based solid state electrolytes enhanced by inorganic fillers have attracted much attention for the development and application of LMBs. In this work, a high-performance PVDF based composite electrolyte is developed by incorporating Lewis acidic AlF 3 nanoparticles. The AlF 3 fillers reduce polymer crystallinity and anchor TFSI - anions via Lewis acid-base interactions, facilitating rapid Li + transport. This enables a superior ionic conductivity of 3.10 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and an enhanced lithium-ion transference number of 0.302 at 25 °C. At the electrode interface, the Lewis acidity of the AlF 3 fillers inhibits uncontrolled electrolyte decomposition, promoting the formation of a dense and inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase. These improvements allow Li||Li symmetric cells to achieve a high critical current density of 1.4 mA cm −2 and an ultra-long cycling life exceeding 3300 h. Furthermore, the assembled NCM811||Li full cells demonstrate excellent electrochemical stability, maintaining a discharge capacity of 176.2 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C and 25 °C after 300 electrochemistry cycles. This study underscores the strategic role of Lewis acidic fillers in optimizing transport kinetics and interfacial chemistry for advanced solid-state batteries.

Superhydrophilic PVDF membrane surface constructed with layer-by-layer assembly for oil/water separation

Xingyu Zhu,Shangpeng Fan,Canping Li,Yuting Jiang,Hongju Yin,Peng Liu,Xiang Shen

N-acryloyl glycinamide-based copolymer was synthesized via free‑radical polymerization. • Superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic PVDF membranes were fabricated via a layer‑by‑layer assembly. • Self-assembly membranes show high separation efficiency for various emulsions. • Anti-oil-fouling ability of self-assembly membrane was improved significantly. • Self-assembly membrane performance remains stable under adverse conditions. The efficient treatment of oil-contaminated water remains a persistent global challenge. Although polymer membranes with superwetting characteristics have seen rapid development, most existing materials face issues such as complex fabrication processes and an inability to separate different types of emulsions. In this study, a hydrophilic copolymer, P(NAGA‑co‑HEA), containing 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and N-acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA) units, was synthesized via free‑radical polymerization. Driven by hydrogen bonding between tannic acid (TA) and the copolymer, the superhydrophilic PVDF membrane was fabricated through a layer‑by‑layer (LBL) assembly strategy. The outcomes indicate that the membrane pore aperture decreases progressively with increasing coating degree due to pore blockage of deposited layers. The membrane surface exhibits a rough spherical micro‑/nanostructure, imparting superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity and anti‑oil adhesion properties. The pure water flux increases and then decreases with increasing coating coverage, while the separation efficiency for various oil-in-water emulsions reaches a maximum rejection ratio of 99.7%. A higher coating coverage also endows the separation membrane with enhanced antifouling properties, as demonstrated by its flux recovery ratio of 94.6% after three permeation cycles. The calculated membrane fouling index further reveals that as the coating coverage increases, the proportion of irreversible fouling in total fouling decreases, indicating that the introduction of the self-assembled coating significantly reduces irreversible oil fouling during the permeation process. Even after treatment with strong acid and high‑concentration saline solutions, the membrane retains stable surface wettability and separation efficiency. This work presents a promising surface‑modification approach for developing high‑performance membranes for oily wastewater remediation.
