Mg Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by Mo 3 S 13 2− and MoS 4 2− (Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs) were prepared through the ion exchange method and compared their removing ability of Cu(II), Pb(II) from wastewater. When the batch experiment conducted at dosage 0.3 g/L, pH neutral, contact time 360 min, concentration 6 mmol/L and temperature 298 K, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II)/Pb(II) onto Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs and MoS 4 -LDHs was 2.76, 4.85 and 2.15, 4.66 mmol/g, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs showed a higher adsorption capacity, which was because the larger amount of adsorption sites on Mo 3 S 13 2− . In mixed systems, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs exhibited the preferential selectivity of Pb(II). When Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs adsorbed the low concentrations of Cu(II)/Pb(II), Mo 3 S 13 2− /MoS 4 2− first captured heavy metals and fixed into the interlayer. With the increase of concentration, Cu(II)/Pb(II) were still captured by the interlayered Mo 3 S 13 2− unlike MoS 4 -LDHs that hydroxyl groups onto LDHs began to capture Cu(II)/Pb(II). In the dynamic adsorption experiment, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could treat a larger volume of sewage than MoS 4 -LDHs. Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs exhibited better selectivity for Cu(II)/Pb(II) under the interference of organic and other metal ions in wastewater, and heavy metals after the treatment by Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs were more stable in the environment. Therefore, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could be considered as an environmentally stable adsorbent to remove heavy metals from wastewater compared to MoS 4 -LDHs.

This study introduces the development of a portable electrochemical sensor for the detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions based on a screen-printed graphene electrode (SPGE) enhanced with alkalized MXene and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Experimental results reveal that the Au@Alk-MXene/SPGE electrode exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, enlarged active surface area, and efficient electron transfer capability, which enhances the electrochemical detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor demonstrates good electrochemical response and distinct stripping peaks for both ions. The linear detection range of the sensor is 5-130 μg L⁻¹ for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), with detection limits of 0.198 μg L⁻¹ for Pb(II) and 0.106 μg L⁻¹ for Cd(II). Furthermore, the sensor shows excellent repeatability with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.16% (n = 10) for Pb(II) and 1.25% (n = 10) for Cd(II), as well as remarkable reproducibility with RSD values of 1.56% for Pb(II) and 1.57% for Cd(II). The sensor was successfully applied to analyze tap water and lake water samples, demonstrating satisfactory recovery rates. This research shows the use of MXenes and AuNPs to modify SPGE electrodes, offering a rapid and portable electrochemical sensor for detecting Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in water.

Guided by efficient utilization of natural plant oil and sulfur as low-cost sorbents, it is desired to tailor the porosity and composition of polysulfides to achieve their optimal applications in the management of aquatic heavy metal pollution. In this study, polysulfides derived from soybean oil and sulfur (PSSs) with improved porosity (10.2–22.9 m 2 /g) and surface oxygen content (3.1–7.0 wt.%) were prepared with respect to reaction time of 60 min, reaction temperature of 170 °C, and mass ratios of sulfur/soybean oil/NaCl/sodium citrate of 1:1:3:2. The sorption behaviors of PSSs under various hydrochemical conditions such as contact time, pH, ionic strength, coexisting cations and anions, temperature were systematically investigated. PSSs presented a fast sorption kinetic (5.0 h) and obviously improved maximum sorption capacities for Pb(II) (180.5 mg/g), Cu(II) (49.4 mg/g), and Cr(III) (37.0 mg/g) at pH 5.0 and T 298 K, in comparison with polymers made without NaCl/sodium citrate. This study provided a valuable reference for the facile preparation of functional polysulfides as well as a meaningful option for the removal of aquatic heavy metals.

In this work, a novel method for sensitive detecting heavy metal Pb (II) in aquatic products was developed using UiO-66-NH 2 @tannic acid (UiO-66-NH 2 @TA) solid-phase extraction combined with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). UiO-66-NH 2 @TA adsorbent could effectively extract Pb (II) from the digestive solution of aquatic products. Characterization of the morphology of the adsorbent was performed using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The optimal experimental conditions for LIBS detection, including sample preparation, substrate type, laser energy, and delay time, were investigated. The results showed that the strongest Pb I 405.7 nm spectral signal can be obtained by dripping UiO-66-NH 2 @TA adsorbent onto a silicon wafer for LIBS testing. The limit of detection and limit of quantification for Pb (II) in aqueous solution were 0.18 μg/mL and 0.61 μg/mL, respectively. The calibration curve demonstrated good sensitivity and accuracy for Pb (II) detection with a correlation coefficient of 0.9905. Spiked recovery experiments on large yellow croakers and scallops yielded recovery rates of 75.25 % - 99.08 %, which was consistent with the results from atomic absorption spectrometry. This study underscores the potential of the solid-phase extraction combined with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for practical application in food safety monitoring, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability in detecting Pb (II) in aquatic products.

The high performance detection of heavy metal ions in crucial water sources is of great significance to protect human health and life safety. Herein, a novel ratiometric detection system towards trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) has been established by utilizing in-situ bismuth modified nitrogen rich porous carbon/boron doped diamond (Bi/NC/BDD) composite electrode. Benefiting from the interconnected hierarchical micro/mesoporous structure and N-embedded partially graphitized carbon matrix of NC modifier, as well as the formation of Bi-alloy, an excellent sensitivity with low limit of detection (LOD, 0.24 μg L −1 for Cd(II) and 0.37 μg L −1 for Pb(II)) is realized. Moreover, the built-in normalization function of Bi(III) reference signal effectively improves the reliability and reproducibility of detection results. This work provides an important guidance for the development of quality environmental monitoring electrodes.

To enhance Pb(II) and Cd(II) elimination, new composites (FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH) were fabricated by loading biochar with Fe-Ni nanoparticles and functionalizing biochar by amination/hydroxylation in the study. The maximum sorption capacities of both adsorbents toward Pb(II)/Cd(II) were 217.09/209.36 mg/g and 242.15/229.52 mg/g, respectively, which were 4.30–4.79 times higher than those of the raw biochar. The significantly enhanced adsorption capacity could be attributed to the increased O/N-containing groups and Fe-Ni nanoparticles on the adsorbent surface. The introduction of Fe-Ni nanoparticles and O/N-containing groups promoted the complexation and electrostatic interactions and made them playing major roles in the adsorption. Besides, ions exchange and physical adsorption played non-negligible roles in the adsorption process. Additionally, the both adsorbents exhibited favorable anti-interference ability and cycling stability. Taken together, the study revealed that the new biochar composites of FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH could be used as a reusable magnetic adsorbents with promising prospect in current practice for the effective remediation of heavy metals-bearing wastewater. The study not only provided a feasible design, synthesis and optimization strategy of biochar for heavy metals contaminants removal, but also realized the sustainable utilization of waste.

A cost-effective and eco-friendly engineering method to improve biochar’s physicochemical and sorption performance is critical in various environmental applications. In this study, micro-nano-engineered nitrogenous biochars derived from cow bone meal pyrolyzed at different temperatures and were engineered with the assistance of a ball-milling technique. The ball-milled bone biochars were natural composites combined with plant biochars and hydroxyapatite components on the micro-nanoscale. Both the micropore area and the external specific surface area of the bone biochars were significantly improved after ball-milling. The sorption capacities for heavy metal ions were heavy metal ions were MBC-600 > MBC-450 > BC-600 > MBC-300 > BC-450 > BC-300, consistent with the variation tendency in the specific surface areas of the bone biochars. The adsorption capacities of MBC-600 for Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) were 165.77, 287.58 and 558.88 mg/g, respectively (T 298K, pH 5.0), representing increases of 93.91.%, 75.56% and 64.61% compared with the un-milled preparation. Surface complexation, cation exchange, chemical precipitation, electrostatic interaction and cation-π bonding were responsible for the removal of heavy metal ions by bone biochar materials. Taken together, the results show that micro-nano-engineered nitrogenous bone biochar prepared using ball-milling technology is a promising material for the remediation of heavy metals-bearing aquatic environments.

Polydopamine-Functionalized graphene oxide (PDA-GO) was used to form Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan/PDA-GO (PVA/CS/PDA-GO) hydrogels. FTIR, TGA and SEM investigation showed that PDA had been successfully loaded on graphene oxide nanosheets. Adsorption of metal ions onto the novel PVA/CS/PDA-GO hydrogel beads with variations in pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature had been investigated. Adsorption data were well accurately described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model at the optimum pH 5.5. The maximum adsorption capacities of the PVA/CS/PDA-GO were 210.94 mg·g −1 , 236.20 mg·g −1 and 214.98 mg·g −1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions with 40 C, respectively. Meanwhile, desorption efficiency and reusability of the adsorbents were assessed on basis of six consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a simple and environmentally friendly method to obtain the PVA/CS/PDA-GO hydrogel beads, which really would be a potential recyclable adsorbent for removal of hazardous metal ions in waste water.

We report a label-free ultrasensitive and selective strategy for Pb(II) assay by a multifunctional DNA probe (MDP)-mediated rolling-circle amplified synthesis of the G-quadruplexes. The MDP acted as a target recognition probe, a catalytic DNAzyme and a primer of rolling-circle amplification (RCA). The presence of Pb(II) can induce the conformational switching of the MDP, resulting in the cleavage of the S-DNA in the MDP to release an E-DNA. The released E-DNA then initiated a RCA reaction with a reasonably devised padlock DNA template to produce an accumulated amount of repeated sequences. The RCA product in the present work was designed as a G-rich sequence, which could fold into thousands of G-quadruplex units. The G-quadruplex formed by RCA can specifically bind to NMM to result in an amplified fluorescence signal. Through these cascade amplifications, Pb(II) ions can be detected at as low as 94.29 pM, which is much lower than those reported in related literature. We expect that this amplification strategy might be helpful in the design of a highly sensitive analytical platform for wide application in environmental and biomedical fields.

The development of an uncomplicated, fast and low-price method for heavy metal ion detection is essential for environmental detection and pollution control. In this research, an innovative type of electrochemical detection sensor was realized by using a kind of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with thiacalix[4]arene (TC4A). The results indicated that Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the sample solution can be detected quickly and simultaneously in the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) mode. The test results can reveal whether the concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater is up to standard. The optimization of multiple experimental parameters including the amount of modification, pH value, deposition time and deposition potential was studied and accomplished. Under the best experimental conditions, the peak value of the voltammetry current increased linearly with the concentration. Within this range, the peak current value and concentration have a very good linear relationship with increasing concentrations of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the ranges of 1.0–2.0 mg L−1, 0.1–1.0 mg L−1 and 1.0–2.0 mg L−1, respectively. And the limits of detection (S/N = 3) are estimated to be 3.0 μg L−1 for Cu(II), 4.0 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and 2.5 μg L−1 for Pb(II), which are lower than those obtained at the unmodified electrodes. Most importantly, the modified electrode was successfully applied in the determination of heavy metals in river water. This innovative electrochemical detection sensor shows high sensitivity, good stability and reproducibility.

Multilayered reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was functionalized with amino groups by treatment with nitrogen plasma. Raman spectroscopy showed plasma treatment not to substantially alter the chemical structure of rGO and that a wide range of functional nitrogen groups is evenly incorporated into the carbon lattice. The amino-modified rGO was used to design an electrochemical biosensor in which a DNAzyme, substrate DNA and Pb(II) and Hg(II) binding DNA were immobilized on the amino-rGO placed on a gold electrode. The high concentration of amino groups and the rough surface of the rGO favor DNA immobilization. Heavy metal ions are bound to the surface via specific interaction between DNA and the two ions which are detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at a potential of 0.2 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The detection limits for Pb(II) and Hg(II) are as low as 7.8 and 5.4 pM, respectively, and the analytical ranges extend from 0.01 to 100 nM. The sensor is highly specific and stable and therefore represents a highly promising tool for use in environmental monitoring.
A nanofilm of reduced graphene oxide was first modified with amino groups by treatment with nitrogen plasma. A special DNA was then anchored to the surface to obtain a biosensor for simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Hg(II). The sensor has detection limits as low as 7.8 and 5.4 pM and is highly selective.

Uniform well-defined nanostructured BiOBr microspheres have been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene glycol (EG). The heavy metal ion adsorption on the as-synthesized nanostructured BiOBr microspheres was systematically assessed by measuring the residual concentration during the adsorption process using a colorimetric method for Cr(VI) concentration, and an extraction-colorimetric method for Cd(II) and Pb(II) concentrations. The nanostructured BiOBr microspheres showed good removal capacity for heavy metal ions (Cr, Cd, Pb), and excellent adsorption properties for low concentration heavy metal ions, indicating potential applications in water purification. Based on the quick and efficient heavy metal ion removal ability of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres, a continuous filtering-type water purification device was designed and constructed. In using this continuous filtering type water purification device, 1 g of adsorbent can purify about 4900 g of Pb(II) contaminated water, 5900 g of Cd(II) contaminated water, or 21 500 g of Cr(VI) contaminated water having initial concentrations of 200 μg L−1 to successfully attain the World Health Organization standard for drinking water. The good removal capacity can be attributed to the hierarchical nanostructure, which displays a large specific surface area and strong adsorption of heavy metal ions.
