In this work, ultrathin NiO nanosheets (NS) supported Pt nanoparticles (NP) nanohybrids (termed as Pt-NP/NiO-NS) are synthesized by cyanogel-NaBH 4 method, in-situ reduction and calcination treatment, in which the thickness of Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids is only 1.8 nm and their specific surface area is as large as 171.5 m 2 g −1 . The Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids can efficiently act as a versatile electrocatalyst for both methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environment. At Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids, only a 57 mV overpotential is required to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for HER. The MOR current at Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids can achieve 179.9 mA cm −2 at 1.45 V potential, which is 15.9 times bigger than that at NiO-NS. The excellent electrocatalytic activity and durability of Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids can be ascribed to the morphology feature of NiO-NS and synergistic effect between Pt-NP and NiO-NS. The uniformly dispersed Pt-NP at NiO-NS can serve as active sites for HER. Meanwhile, Pt-NP can modify the electronic property of NiO-NS, and boost the formation of active Ni III OOH species. Consequently, a symmetric Pt-NP/NiO-NS||Pt-NP/NiO-NS methanol electrolyzer only requires 1.39 V electrolysis voltage for hydrogen production at cathode, accompanying with the production of value-added potassium formate at anode.

The highly active bimetallic single-atom electrocatalysts are desirable for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but remain challenging. Herein, Fe/Pt single-atom bifunctional electrocatalysts (Fe1Pt1/NC) are initially fabricated by nitrogen doping during the pyrolysis of porphyra and adsorbed urea at high temperature with subsequent nitrogen anchoring of Pt4+ in aqueous solution with the as-synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon. The as-synthesized Fe1Pt1/NC electrocatalysts have been intensively characterized by HAADF-STEM, XAFS, HRTEM, XRD, and Raman analysis. Particularly, the Fe1Pt1/NC presents excellent electrocatalytic activity toward HER, with relatively low overpotential of 27 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and small Tafel slopes of 28 mV dec–1. Furthermore, the Fe1Pt1/NC electrocatalyst possesses superior ORR activity with an onset potential of 1.04 V and half-wave potential of 0.91 V. This work provides a feasible way to synthesize electrocatalysts with abundant single-atom sites using renewable biomass as a precursor.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted growing attention because they are advanced energy conversion devices to efficiently harvest low-frequency mechanical energy from nature. How to increase the permittivity of electrode materials as well as the surface charge density is technically important to improve the output performances of a robust TENG. In this study, an all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite film with semiconducting characteristics is combined with metallic nano-platinum to build bulk Pt/CsPbBr3 Schottky junctions, which are used as triboelectric electrode materials in vertical contact-separation perovskite TENGs. The systematic characterization demonstrates that the electron binding energy and dielectric properties of bulk Pt/CsPbBr3 Schottky junction tailored perovskite films are maximized by optimizing the Pt dosage. An open-circuit voltage of 273 V, a short-circuit current density of 30.3 μA cm−2 and an instantaneous maximum power density of 1295.5 mW m−2 are achieved by the champion Pt/CsPbBr3 TENG at a Pt dosage of 0.5%. A maximum energy storage of 3.96 mJ is stored in a 1 μF capacitor within a 300 s charging period. This work provides new insights into Schottky junction TENGs for enriching the fundamental principles of both halide perovskites and TENGs.

Dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane (MCH) is conceived as a key reaction for the hydrogen economy. In this study, TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 supports with different TiO 2 loading are prepared by vapor deposition on γ- Al 2 O 3 , which are further used to prepare Pt/TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalysts by Pt impregnation for MCH dehydrogenation reaction. TiO 2 modification of γ-Al 2 O 3 reduces the density of weak acid sites, promotes the electron density on Pt and enhances the H spillover on Pt, leading to enhanced dehydrogenation activity. The catalyst using the 10 wt% TiO 2 modified γ-Al 2 O 3 substrate has the smallest Pt particle size and the highest methylcyclohexane conversion. This work, therefore, provides a potentially generalizable approach to enhance MCH dehydrogenation via support engineering.

In this study, the Pt-loaded ellipsoidal nanozeolite (Pt/ZSM-5-OS) was successfully synthesized by the mercaptosilane modification assisted Pt dispersion method and investigated for the catalytic combustion of toluene, which was used as a model compound of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The catalytic activity evaluation showed that Pt/ZSM-5-OS exhibited an excellent activity in toluene catalytic combustion, with 90% conversion (T 90 ) occurring at just 164 °C. The catalytic activity was much higher than the catalyst prepared by traditional impregnation method (Pt/ZSM-5-IM, T 90 = 196 °C). In addition, the excellent properties of anti-water vapor and catalytic stability were observed for Pt/ZEM-5-OS. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 physisorption , scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Characterization of the as-prepared catalysts demonstrated that the enhanced catalytic performance was related to the improved Pt dispersion and higher Pt 0 proportion of Pt-ZSM-5-OS. Hence, Pt/ZSM-5-OS and its preparation method are attractive for the practical VOCs catalytic combustion.

Shape-tunable PtAg nanocatalysts including PtAg nanoflowers (NFs) and PtAg nanowires (NWs) are prepared by a facile hydrothermal reduction method, via adjusting the precursor ratio of Pt/Ag and subsequent UV-irradiation. Physicochemical characterizations reveal that the as-prepared catalysts have a porous structure , which forms from the conversion of AgCl to Ag nanoparticles . These features favor both oxygen mass transfer and accessibility of active sites. The as-prepared Pt 1 Ag 4 NWs exhibit superior catalytic performances for ORR. The mass activity of Pt 1 Ag 4 NWs is 11.4 times higher than that of 20% Pt/C. More important, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt 1 Ag 4 NWs is 2.5 times larger than that of commercial Pt/C.

The fast deactivation caused by serious formation of coke is a major challenge in catalytic isomerization of endo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (endo-THDCPD) into exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (exo-THDCPD) over the HY zeolite. In order to suppress the coke formation for the isomerization process, the conventional HY zeolite was modified with Pt at 0.3 wt %. Then, the hydroisomerization of endo-THDCPD into exo-THDCPD was evaluated over a fixed-bed reactor. The catalytic stability of Pt/HY was greatly enhanced in comparison to that of the HY zeolite. The Pt/HY catalyst provided 97% endo-THDCPD conversion and 96% selectivity for exo-THDCPD without deactivation after 100 h. Moreover, the formation mechanism of coke on the HY zeolite during the isomerization process was proposed based on the results of the coke analysis. It was indicated that the coke was generated from the oligomerization and condensation of olefin species, which originated from the β-scission reaction or hydride transfer reaction of intermediates. The lower coke formation over Pt/HY was attributed to the lower amount of coke precursors, which could be hydrogenated by activated H2 over Pt sites. Therefore, Pt on Pt/HY and H2 were two crucial factors in efficiently enhancing the catalytic stability of the HY zeolite for this isomerization reaction.

Pt-based materials have widely been explored as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, but the high cost of Pt catalyst limits its application in HER. Therefore, we report a platinum/polyvinyl-alcohol (Pt x -PVA) catalyst with high catalytic activity and low Pt loading. Pt x -PVA catalysts with a uniform distribution of the Pt nanoparticles (NPs) have successfully been synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The size and morphology of Pt NPs can be easily adjusted by changing the amount of Pt precursor, easy to pick out the sample with the best performance. Among them, the Pt 1.88 -PVA catalyst exhibits the best electrocatalytic activity for HER in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution. An overpotential of 34 mV on Pt 1.88 -PVA catalyst is obtained at a current density of −10 mA cm −2 , which is slightly better than the overpotential of the commercial Pt/C (42 mV). Similarly, the Tafel slope of 31 mV dec −1 on the Pt 1.88 -PVA catalyst indicates that the HER process is the Volmer-Tafel mechanism. However, the Pt loading of the Pt 1.88 -PVA catalyst is 18.8% times lower than that of the commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the Pt x -PVA catalysts exhibit an excellent stability and durability. This is due to the coating effect of PVA for Pt NPs, which limits the migration and agglomeration of Pt NPs. This study provides a new approach for reducing the Pt load in Pt-based catalyst in the field of electrochemistry.

Using nanocrystals with specific crystal facets is an effective way to enhance activity and selectivity for numerous catalytic reactions . However, the intrinsic facet effect is not fully understood. Herein, using Pt catalyzed glycerol oxidation reaction as the model system, the intrinsic facet effect on catalytic property is evaluated by three kinds of Pt nanocrystal catalysts with cubic, spherical and tetrahedral shapes. Size effect, support effect, surfactant effect as well as the metal-support interaction of the catalysts are avoided to the maximum extent. The supported Pt nanocubes enclosed by Pt(1 0 0) facets are found to exhibit much higher catalytic activity and stability for the aerobic oxidation of glycerol than catalysts with Pt nanotetrahedrons enclosed by Pt(1 1 1) facets. DFT calculations indicate that the adsorption of oxygen and glycerol would materialize easier on Pt(1 0 0) than on Pt(1 1 1). Furthermore, Pt(1 0 0) may prevent deactivation caused by product adsorption as well.

Platinum-decorated graphene aerogel microspheres were fabricated through a combined electrospraying, freeze-casting, and solvothermal process. Platinum nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution are evenly anchored on the graphene aerogel microspheres without agglomeration benefitting from the distinct center-diverging microchannel structure of the graphene aerogel microspheres, which results in the as-prepared catalysts presenting excellent electrocatalytic performance including high electrocatalytic activity and high poison tolerance toward methanol electro-oxidation, showing great potential for direct methanol fuel cell anode catalysts. In particular, the platinum-decorated graphene aerogel microspheres exhibit an extremely high mass activity of 1098.9 mA mg–1 toward methanol oxidation as well as excellent antipoisoning ability, which are dramatically enhanced compared with Pt particles dispersed on graphene oxide and commercial carbon black supports.

The Pt@FGS/JP-10 nanofluids (0.1 wt% for Pt) were successfully prepared by two consecutive steps: loading Pt nanoparticles on the functionalized graphene sheets (FGS) grafted octadecylamine (ODA) via wet chemical method, following by dispersing it in JP-10 hydrocarbon fuel. The characterization of the prepared Pt@FGS showed that the size of Pt nanoparticles is ca. 2.2 nm, which could be stably dispersed in JP-10 for 2 weeks without significant aggregation or sediment, and the thermal conductivity of 0.2 wt% Pt@FGS/JP-10 nanofluids increases by ca. 35.2% compared with that of pure JP-10. Catalytic cracking performances of Pt@FGS/JP-10 nanofluids were evaluated in a batch reactor heated by fluidized sand at 360–420 °C, and observed that the cracking rate of JP-10 (400 °C, 5 h) improves by 150% in presence of 0.5 wt% Pt@FGS with improved hydrogen selectivity. The possible reason may be attributed to the catalytic dehydrogenation of JP-10 over Pt nanoparticles and the carbon defects on FGS (ca. 71.0% improvement in cracking rate for FGS/JP-10 nanofluids). This work provides a promising method to synchronously improve the thermal conductivity and endothermic cracking rate of JP-10 as a coolant for advanced aircrafts through adding trace Pt@FGS.

We herein present a method for the synthesis of HNbWO6, HNbMoO6, HTaWO6 solid acid nanosheet modified Pt/CNTs. By varying the weight of various solid acid nanosheets, a series of Pt/xHMNO6/CNTs with different solid acid compositions (x = 5, 20 wt%; M = Nb, Ta; N = Mo, W) have been prepared by carbon nanotube pretreatment, protonic exchange, solid acid exfoliation, aggregation and finally Pt particles impregnation. The Pt/xHMNO6/CNTs are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. The study revealed that HNbWO6 nanosheets were attached on CNTs, with some edges of the nanosheets being bent in shape. The acid strength of the supported Pt catalysts increases in the following order: Pt/CNTs < Pt/5HNbWO6/CNTs < Pt/20HNbMoO6/CNTs < Pt/20HNbWO6/CNTs < Pt/20HTaWO6/CNTs. In addition, the catalytic hydroconversion of lignin-derived model compound: diphenyl ether using the synthesized Pt/20HNbWO6 catalyst has been investigated.
