Ru-containing high-entropy alloys catalysts for optimal oxygen evolution via multimetallic electronic synergy engineering

Xiang Xu,Jingxu Tian,Zijie Sun,Kueasook Ratchadaporn,Peng He,Zheng Zeng,Liqing Li

The expensive material costs of precious metals long limit their use as catalysts. The development of High-Entropy Alloy (HEA) materials provides a feasible approach to combine high performance and lower cost. Therefore, Ru-containing HEA nanoparticles are synthesized on carbon nanofibers. Among them, Ru 0.2 @CNFs reveals the best catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and extraordinary stability for the 1000th cycle. Moreover, the Ru-containing multimetallic catalyst models are calculated based on crystal information obtained from X-ray diffraction result. The great electrocatalytic potential of the Ru 0.2 <1   1   1> crystal face is indicated by the density of states and d-band center, which might benefit from the stronger atomic interaction caused by high-entropy mixing. The largest configuration entropy of Ru 0.2 HEA (1.58 R ) gives a reasonable explanation for its remarkable stability in OER electrocatalysis. In addition, the similar adsorption energies of *OH demonstrate the abundant active sites on the surface of RuFeCoNiCu HEA. As a result, the high-entropy material Ru 0.2 @CNFs can provide potential nanocatalysts with reduced noble metal loading for practical applications. Besides, significant insights for performance prediction in other high-entropy materials are given by the modeling and calculations of HEAs.

Charge competition enhancing Ru-based high entropy oxide nanosheet for efficient and stable oxygen evolution

Zichen Wang,Suhao Chen,Runzhe Chen,Haoran Jiang,Yinghui Jiang,Qiliang Wei,Wei Wu,Jun Zhong,Niancai Cheng

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) caused by the complex process significantly hinder the advancement of electrolytic water to hydrogen technology. Herein, the valence of Ru is modulated and stabilized through inducing the electronic competition between Mo and Ru, and the charge transfer from Fe, Co, and Ni to Ru in 2D porous FeCoNiMoRu high entropy oxides (HEO) nanosheets to achieve efficient and stable OER. The 2D porous structure of FeCoNiMoRu HEO contributes to the high exposure of active sites while promoting rapid mass transfer, which can facilitate oxygen-evolving kinetics of the catalyst. Consequently, the optimized catalyst (FeCoNiMoRu HEO) surpasses RuO 2 (315 mV) in OER catalytic activity, exhibiting an overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Notably, the mass activity of FeCoNiMoRu HEO is nearly 18.6-fold that of RuO 2 . Combined experimental and theoretical analysis, a charge competition between Mo and Ru atoms, and the charge transfer from Fe, Co, and Ni elements to Ru in HEO can buffer the change of valence of Ru and modulate its electronic structure, thus enhancing the activity and durability of FeCoNiMoRu HEO during OER.

Low-temperature hydrodeoxygenation of fatty acids to biodiesel via Ru–Mo strong metal-support interaction

Hao Huang,Nadia N. Intan,Jialin Tan,Zidi Liu,Da Zhang,Xiaolan Cai,Min Zhuang,Shaoqu Xie

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) significantly influences the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability through the geometric and electronic effects of a catalyst. We herein develop a stable Ru 0 −Mo δ+ catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty acids to alkanes (2.5 μmol g −1 cat h −1 ) at low to room temperatures, meanwhile demonstrating its general applicability to various complex fatty acids. Kinetic studies and reaction pathway analysis revealed that the Ru–Mo SMSI significantly reduced the reaction activation energy by altering the HDO pathways. Mechanistic studies indicate that electron transfer occurs between the active Ru nanoclusters and the Mo δ+ support, which enhances catalytic activity by promoting the adsorption of RCOO* at the Ru 0 −Mo δ+ interface. Our research establishes an efficient Ru–Mo catalyst for biomass upgrading at low temperatures and calls for reassessing the electronic effects in the M 0 -M δ+ interfacial catalysis model.

Highly Selective Conversion of Polyethylene Terephthalate into Liquid Fuel via Nb-Assisted Ru Bimetallic Catalyst

Jun Zuo,Mengjia Zhu,Jiamin Liu,Juncheng He,Xiaohua Li,Tiantian Liu,Zhuangzhuang Ren,Zuoxi Zhuo,Yu Tang,Lizhi Wu,Li Tan

Chemical recycling of polyester plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), by converting them into high value-added chemical products, represents a highly promising technological approach. However, persistent challenges remain in PET conversion, including unclear structure–activity relationships of catalysts, low conversion efficiency of hydrogenation-active metals, and insufficient selectivity toward target products. In this work, we developed a high-performance Ru/xNb-BEA (BEA represents dealuminated Beta zeolite) catalyst synthesized via a simple impregnation method. The optimized 1Ru/8Nb-BEA catalyst achieved the highest turnover frequency of 63.3 h–1 with a high selectivity of >95% for cycloalkanes (among all detected products) and demonstrated stable performance over five consecutive reaction cycles (240 °C, 3 MPa H2, 12 h) but also maintained a high reaction performance in practical applications. Combined with comprehensive characterizations, the structure-performance relationship of Ru/Nb-BEA was elucidated. Nb species occupying BEA zeolite T-site vacancies form Si–O–Nb units that disperse and stabilize the Ru0 species. The synergistic effect between distinct acidic site Nb species and hydrogenation-active Ru0 species is proposed as the critical determinant for enhanced catalytic activity. Furthermore, using in situ infrared spectroscopy, we detected the presence of aromatic alcohols and aldehydes during the reaction, providing insights into the plausible reaction mechanism. This study provides valuable insights for the future design of catalysts for the hydro-deoxygenation (HDO) of PET.

Synthesis of Ru(IV) modified Pt/C electrocatalyst and its application for enhanced methanol electrooxidation

Shaojun Li,Junming Chen,Lei Bai

Commercial Pt/C was modified with Ru (IV) species via the hydrolysis of Ruthenium (III) nitrosyl nitrate under a hydrothermal condition. It was revealed that the Pt nanoparticles were surrounded by Ru (IV) species and the presence of Ru (IV) species modified the electronic structure, which lowed the binding energy of Pt atoms. The results from the methanol electrooxidation suggested that the current intensity was increased and at the same time, the onset potential was decreased largely in the presence of Ru(IV) species modified Pt/C, which demonstrated the fact that the Ru (IV) species could activate the water molecules to provide the OH* to remove the CO ads at low potential.

Quenching of the electrochemiluminescence of Ru(bpy)32+/TPA by malachite green and crystal violet

Baomei Huang,Xibin Zhou,Zhonghua Xue,Guofan Wu,Jie Du,Di Luo,Tao Liu,Jing Ru,Xiaoquan Lu

Efficient and stable quenching of electrochemiluminescence of Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /TPA by malachite green(MG) and crystal violet(CV) at the glass carbon (GC) electrode is reported. A novel quenching mechanism has been proposed. Resonance energy transfer from the excited-state luminophore Ru(bpy) 3 2+⁎ to MG/CV and dynamic quenching are suggested as the mechanism for quenching ECL. The quenching mechanism is discussed in detail based on UV–visible absorption spectra, cyclic voltammograms, ECL curves and fluorescence methods . MG shows more efficient quenching than CV. Moreover, the quenched ECL intensity versus the concentration of MG and CV are linear over the concentration ranges of 8×10 −10 –8×10 −7   M and 3.46×10 −9 –5.5×10 −7   M, respectively. The corresponding limit of detection (LOD) was 1.0×10 −10   M for MG and 1.1×10 −10   M for CV ( S / N =3).

Yao Ma,Yangqiang Huang,Youwei Cheng,Lijun Wang,Xi Li

Ru-based catalysts, supported on activated carbon and carbon nanotubes, were synthesized by a simple and eco-friendly bioreduction method and tested in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. Over 2.0% Ru/AC, succinic anhydride was produced with a maximum yield of 99.2% without further hydrogenation to γ-butyrolactone. Well-defined spherical shapes with uniform small size of Ru nanoparticles and the residual plant biomass were responsible for the excellent catalytic activities and stabilities.

Unravelling the Ru-promoted dynamic evolution of Cobalt hydroxide during nitrate reduction towards ammonia production

Liu Di,Bai Haoyun,Chen Mingpeng,Peng Shuyang,Kang Jiaqian,Li Lun,Feng Ziwen,Liu Chunfa,Ip Weng Fai,Pan Hui

Geen ammonia synthesis through electrochemical nitrate reduction (e-NO 3 R) using cost-effective Co-based catalysts is promising, but the inevitable structural evolution induced by reductive potentials compromises long-term stability and hinders practical implementation. Focusing on β-Co(OH) 2 , which serves as the active phase in e-NO 3 R systems, this work combines experimental analysis and computational studies to reveal a dynamic surface *OH evolution process: *OH cleavage under negative potentials and *OH generation by the dissociation of NO 3 - . Notably, Ru nanoparticles anchored on β-Co(OH) 2 nanosheets promote structural evolution by facilitating *OH cleavage and generation, thereby sustaining a highly active and selective OH-terminated surface. Simultaneously, Ru provides moderate *H adsorption, accelerates the conversions from NO 3 − to NO 2 − and from NO 2 − to NH 3 , and thus enhances ammonia synthesis. The optimized Co(OH) 2 -Ru catalyst achieves an ammonia yield of 98 ± 0.91 mg·h -1 ·cm -2 with a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97.7 ± 0.90 % at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), while maintaining NH 3 FEs above 95% across a broad potential window. This work elucidates structural evolution dynamics, offering a design principle for robust electrocatalysts.

One-pot synthesis of single-atom Ru-immobilized hierarchical porous CeO2 catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation

Zhenzhen Wang,Liujun Wang,Chen Yuan,Bengao Yuan,Zhe Wang,Zhonghua Sun,Zhihui Zhang,Bing Lu,Ping Liu,Mingyang He,Junfeng Qian

The catalytic conversion of CO 2 to formic acid (FA) represents a promising route for carbon utilization and sustainable chemical production. However, this process faces thermodynamic limitations and requires highly efficient catalysts. Conventional synthesis methods often lead to structural inhomogeneity and involve complex procedures, constraining their efficiency and scalability. To overcome these limitations, we developed a one-pot solvothermal approach combined with calcination to fabricate Ru/CeO 2 catalysts. The as-synthesized catalysts feature atomically dispersed Ru species, a significantly increased concentration of oxygen vacancies on CeO 2 , and enhanced metal-support interactions, which work synergistically to promote reactant activation and catalytic performance. Under mild reaction conditions, the optimized Ru/CeO 2 catalyst delivered high performance, achieving a turnover number (TON) of 1112 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 139 h −1 . Moreover, the catalyst maintained high stability and recyclability over multiple reaction cycles, underscoring its potential for industrial implementation. This study offers an efficient and scalable synthesis strategy for designing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts, thereby advancing carbon emission mitigation and sustainable chemical synthesis.

Kirkendall-Effect-Driven Synthesis of Cu/Ru Nanocages for Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction via Tandem Catalysis

Yuanyuan Yang,Hang Yin,Hua-Jun Qiu,Chun-yang Zhang,Henglei Jia

The high-yield synthesis of uniform Cu/Ru nanostructures is crucial for catalyzing nitrate (NO3–) reduction to ammonia (NH3), yet it remains highly challenging. Herein, we report a facile strategy for synthesizing Cu/Ru bimetallic nanocages in high yield, driven by the Kirkendall effect. This process induces nonequilibrium atomic interdiffusion at the Cu/Ru interface, generating a net outward flux of Cu atoms and a counter-flux of vacancies, which collectively lead to the formation of a uniform nanocage structure. Importantly, the Cu87Ru13 nanocages exhibit superior performance in the electrochemical NO3– reduction reaction (NO3–RR), achieving a maximal Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 91% and an NH3 production rate of 3353 mmol h–1 g–1 at −0.3 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). In situ characterization reveals that within Cu/Ru nanocages, Cu sites adsorb NO3– and reduce it to *NO2, while Ru sites reduce adsorbed *H, which protonates reaction intermediates to facilitate the conversion of NO3– to NH3.

Spatial Confinement Modulated Ru/WO3 Heterointerface for Tandem Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion in Neutral Electrolytes

Zhijiao Ji,Xiaofang Zhang,Wen Gan,Qingzhen Wang,Ming Xu,Luchan Lin,Chufu Li

To address the challenges of weak NO3−adsorption, insufficient active hydrogen supply, and facile desorption of NO2−intermediates in neutral electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), this study employs laser nano-welding technology to fabricate a Ru/WO3heterojunction, and constructs a Ru/WO3/Cu(OH)2/FC spatially confined electrode using Cu(OH)2nanorod arrays as the support. Laser welding achieves metallurgical-grade bonding between Ru and WO3while retaining oxygen vacancies in WO3. Cu(OH)2promotes NO3−adsorption via electrostatic and Lewis acid interactions, and its nanorod array structure confines NO2−intermediates. In 0.5 M K2SO4+ 50 mM KNO3electrolyte, the electrode delivers an ammonia yield rate of 16.1 mg h−1cm−2and a Faradaic efficiency of 75.8% at −0.8 V vs. RHE, outperforming control groups. Potential-dependent electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirms that spatial confinement suppresses NO2−accumulation and optimizes interfacial charge transfer kinetics, providing a new strategy for electrode design in neutral NO3RR.

Mo-mediated electronic modulation of RuO2 for improved acidic oxygen evolution activity and Ru retention

Yuhan Wang,Yihao Qu,Min Yu,Ji Yang

Proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysers require active and stable anodic oxygen evolution catalysts. RuO 2 offers high intrinsic activity but dissolves rapidly in acid. Here, high-valence molybdenum is introduced into rutile RuO 2 to regulate the local Ru-O chemical and electronic environment. The sample labels Mo-x-RuO 2 refer to nominal Mo/(Mo + Ru) precursor ratios. XRD, EDS, XPS and DFT analyses support Mo incorporation within the rutile framework and reveal an altered local Ru/O chemical environment, providing insights into the electronic regulation induced by Mo incorporation. Mo-17-RuO 2 requires 207 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec −1 . After 75 h of acidic half-cell operation, it shows 6.64% cumulative Ru dissolution based on the nominal initial Ru loading. The commercial RuO 2 reference exhibited 27.95% cumulative Ru dissolution after approximately 17 h of operation. For the selected computational models, the AEM- and LOM-like pathways exhibit comparable thermodynamic limiting steps, with theoretical overpotentials of 275 and 262 mV, respectively, suggesting that Mo incorporation modulates oxygen reaction energetics without exclusively favoring a single pathway. These findings provide insight into composition-dependent Mo engineering for improving the performance and Ru retention of acidic OER catalysts.
