Si 3 N 4 -MgO-C refractories were prepared using fused magnesia, flake graphite, and Si powder-supported Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O as the raw materials and phenolic resin as the binder under the flow of N 2 . The effect of different nitriding temperatures on the morphology and production of Si 3 N 4 in the uncatalyzed refractories was investigated. The effect of the morphology of β-Si 3 N 4 on the properties of the refractories with different catalyst contents was investigated. The oxidation resistance of the refractories was also investigated. The results showed that the increase in the nitriding temperature was beneficial for the formation of β-Si 3 N 4 in the refractories. However, very high nitriding temperatures generated a large number of pores in the refractories and deteriorated their properties. The refractory with 1 wt% catalyst exhibited good mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. However, the addition of excessive catalyst inhibited the formation of β-Si 3 N 4 and deteriorated the performance of the refractories.

Hollow-structured ceramic fibers with multiple components are ideal as lightweight insulation materials. In this study, tetraethyl orthosilicate , boric acid, and zirconia octahydrate were used as raw materials for fabricating SiZrBOC hollow ceramic fibers through coaxial electrospinning. These ceramic fibers exhibit a low thermal conductivity and an excellent temperature resistance. The electrospun SiZrBOC hollow ceramic fibers display a clean and compact morphology with internal folds. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to assess the transformation process and thermal behavior of the hollow ceramic fibers. The results suggest that the incorporation of B promotes the formation of Si–O–B bonds within the system, leading to a maximum yield of 75.49 wt% for the production of the SiZrBOC hollow ceramic fibers. The phase composition and microstructure of the SiZrBOC hollow ceramic fibers were analyzed via X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The pyrolysis at 1000 °C resulted in the appearance of diffraction peaks corresponding to SiO 2 and SiC in the XRD patterns of the SiZrBOC hollow ceramic fibers. Laser thermal conductivity measurements reveal that the SiZrBOC hollow ceramic fibers exhibit a thermal conductivity of only 0.06 W‧m −1 K −1 at 25 °C and 0.124 W‧m −1 K −1 at 500 °C, indicating a significantly superior thermal insulation performance compared with conventional solid SiZrBOC ceramic fibers.

There has been significant interest in the preparation and versatile applications of carbon dots (CDs) due to their immense potential value in sensors and imaging. In this work, silicon-doped green carbon dots (Si-CDs) with high quantum yield and rich epoxypropyl were effectively synthesized. Given the clinical diagnostic importance of abnormal levels of tyrosinase (TYR), sensitive detection of TYR is significant for clinical research. A fluorescence signal-off strategy with Si-CDs as probe was constructed to determine TYR based on the oxidation of dopamine by TYR. The detection ranges of this method were 0.01–1.5 and 10–30 U/mL with the detection limit of 0.0046 U/mL, the lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 0.01 U/mL, and TYR was successfully and accurately monitored in human serum. Additionally, due to the role of lysosomes in cellular regulatory processes, including TYR levels and fluorescence stability characteristics of Si-CDs in acidic conditions, it was envisaged to use Si-CDs as probe to establish real-time monitoring of lysosomes. According to fluorescence colocation analysis, Si-CDs had intrinsic lysosomal targeting ability to HepG2 and L-02 (with Pearson correlation coefficients were 0.90 and 0.91, respectively). The targeting of Si-CDs to lysosomes was due to the acidophilic effect of the epoxypropyl on its surface.

Aluminum (Al)-lithium (Li) alloys are ambitious candidates for application in energetic materials, however, the high reactivity of Al-Li compound and Li in alloys affects their thermal stability, which results in gradually lower active content and diminished performance, impeding their further application in energetics. In this study, the specific content of silicon (Si) was introduced into Al-Li alloy via the centrifugal atomization that allows in-situ assembly of Al , Li, and Si at the single particle level, thus resulting in more stable Al-Li-Si compounds instead of active Al-Li compounds and Li and enhancing their thermal stability. The results show that Al-Li-Si alloy powders are in a high degree of sphericity, which are composed of αAl and AlLiSi. Compared to Al-Li alloys, Al-Li-Si alloys initiate the oxidization at a higher temperature (∼600 ℃) since the existence of more stable Al-Li-Si compounds than Li in Al-Li alloys, which indicates a higher thermal stability. Al-Li-Si alloys also show high heat release and combustion efficiency similar to Al-Li alloys. In the meanwhile, Al-Li-Si alloy-based composites maintain almost the same combustion properties compared to Al-Li/PTFE energetics, along with prolonged combustion duration. Therefore, Al-Li-Si alloy powders are promising candidates for application in energetic materials considering their higher thermal stability and tunable combustion properties.

Though coating CsPbBr3 nanocrystal (NC) with an outer layer has been regarded as an effective strategy to address its instability issues, deep investigations into the electronic interaction between CsPbBr3 NC and coating layer have yet to be conducted. In this study, the dynamics of hot carrier and charge carrier of CsPbBr3 nanocrystal with various MO2 (M = Si, Ti, Sn) coating layers have been comprehensively studied. Combined transient optical characterizations (time-resolved photoluminescence and ultrafast transient absorption) and photoelectrochemical measurements reveal that coating with insulating SiO2 accelerates the hot carrier relaxation and enhances the radiative recombination by passivating surface traps, whereas efficient charge-carrier separation and extraction are observed after coating with SnO2 and TiO2. The electron injection from CsPbBr3 NC to SnO2 (1.14 × 108 s–1) is 2-fold faster than to TiO2 (5.4 × 107 s–1) owing to the lower conduction band edge and the higher electron mobility of SnO2. Particularly, the first time fabricated CsPbBr3 NC/SnO2 composite exhibits superior stability against UV light and moisture, as well as the best photocurrent response in this study. This work has implied that rational design of the coating layer for perovskite NC can not only improve the stability but also tailor the electronic and optoelectronic properties for various applications.

Poor intrinsic electrical conductivity as well as considerable volume change during lithium alloying/dealloying process has been a critical defect for high theoretical capacity silicon-based anodes. In our work, we demonstrate the synthesis design of multiscale recombined dendritic Si/Ag/C anode for high energy density LIBs via compositing bulky silicon with uniformly distributed Ag NPs, followed by a carbon source PDA (polydopamine) coating step. Here Ag NPs are generated by an in situ redox reaction between Ag + and PDA, no need for additional reducing agents. According to the characterization analysis, the robust porous Si/Ag/C structure can provide channels for fast Li + diffusion and electron conduction, promoting the formation of a thinner and more stable SEI film. As a result, the Si/Ag/C composite anode still yields a relatively high residual capacity of 1422.1 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 . In addition, it remains 633.1 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a high current density of 8 A g −1 .

In this work, to improve the strain capacity of tungsten , β-SiC was added to form W-Si-C multi-phase composites composed of W, W 2 C, and W 5 Si 3 using the arc-melting method. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical behavior was investigated, and a microstructural evolution mechanism was proposed. The grain size of the W was refined significantly from 1071.8 to 5.4 µm as the SiC content increased. The micro-hardness (3.67–12.79 GPa) and ultimate compressive strength (UCS) (0.90–2.29 GPa) of the W-Si-C multi-phase composite obviously increased as the β-SiC content increased to 4 wt% due to the grain refinement and segregation of the W 2 C and W 5 Si 3 at the grain boundaries. The highest strain of UCS (21.9%) was obtained at 1 wt% SiC, which is three times of that of pure W (7.4%) and is a result of the refined W grain size and the potentiation of W 5 Si 3.

Si nanoparticles uniformly welded in multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) webs with 20 nm carbon layer was synthesized by a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled modification approach, electrostatic attraction directed self-assembly method, in-situ chemical polymerization reaction and then subsequent carbonization process. The uniform and effective carbon layer on electrode surface transmitted sufficient electrons, and the deformation pressure from charge/discharge process was buffered. The special three-dimensional framework could afford better mechanical strength to deter the fracture and pulverization of the electrode structure for repeated cycling, which helped keep the electrode integrity and improve the electric conductive network. The as-prepared electrode showed a steady reversible capacity of 1067 mAh g −1 with a fading rate of 0.066%/cycle after 200 cycles and 937 mAh g −1 with a fading rate of 0.053%/cycle over 450 cycles and high rate capability of 721 mAh g −1 at 7 A g −1 .

Here we report a highly active electrochemical water splitting electrode fabricated from colloidal IrOx nanoparticles and nanoporous Si stabilized by conformal TiO2. The colloidal amorphous IrOx nanoparticles are highly active for oxygen evolution reaction. However, their application for water splitting has a dilemma that the traditional annealing process could lead to low activities but the nanoparticles based electrode without annealing usually exhibited low stability. This nanostructured water splitting electrode exhibited both the high activities as the colloidal IrOx nanoparticles and comparable stability as a traditional thermal annealing fabricated electrode. The impedance study revealed that conformal TiO2 significantly inhibits the interface oxidation and maintains the high activity of colloidal IrOx nanoparticles catalysts. The conformal TiO2 interface engineering combined with nanocatalysts would be a promising strategy to achieve balanced activities and stability for water splitting.

In this work, we have prepared a 3D-composite-nanonetwork material consisting of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network and Si nanosphere embedded elements, through an electrostatic induced self-assembly process and the following film transfer technique. Negatively charged acid-functionalized SWNTs and positively charged surface-modified Si nanospheres composed a highly dispersed system, which was key to the fabrication of a self-assembled active material film. After transferring it to the Cu foil substrate by a novel film transfer technique, an integrated anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) was obtained without using binders or conductive additives, and exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. The continuous 3D conductive network consisting of SWNTs provided a rapid electronic transport pathway, which was able to counteract the conductivity decline caused by the formation of a solid electrolyte interface layer, thus ensuring a superior rate capability and cycling stability. This combined process of self-assembly and film transfer would provide a new idea for the design and preparation of LIB electrodes, especially those which are restricted by low conductivity and large volume change during cycling.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the substantivity of Ag–Ca–Si mesoporous nanoparticles (Ag-MCSNs) on dentin and its residual antibacterial effects against Enterococcus faecalis . Ag-MCSNs were fabricated and characterized, ion release profile and pH were tested, and the ability to inhibit planktonic E. faecalis as well as the cytotoxicity was evaluated. Dentin slices were medicated with Ca(OH) 2 paste, 2 % chlorhexidine gel and Ag-MCSNs paste for 7 days and then irrigated. Dentin slices were then immersed in E. faecalis suspension for 6 days and then transferred to fresh brain heart infusion solution. The optical density value within 10 h after immersing and transferring were measured and compared among groups. Results indicated that Ag-MCSNs showed high pH, sustained Ag + –Ca 2+ –SiO 3
2− ion release, and high substantivity on dentin. The Ag-MCSNs exhibited strong antibacterial effects against planktonic E. faecalis and much better residual inhibition effects against E. faecalis growth on dentin than Ca(OH) 2 paste ( P < 0.05). The Ag-MCSNs showed excellent antibacterial ability against E. faecalis and high substantivity on dentin, which might be developed to a new effective intra-canal medicament for human teeth.
