Polyphenolic truxillic acid crosslinked sodium alginate film with notable antimicrobial and biodegradable properties for food packaging

Panyao Ruan,Kexin Zhang,Wenjing Zhang,Yanwei Kong,Yue Zhou,Bin Yao,Yongsheng Wang,Zhihan Wang

This work demonstrated an innovative antimicrobial and biodegradable food packaging film CBDA-10-SA which was prepared by crosslinking a natural polyphenolic truxillic acid (cyclobutane-dicarboxylic acid, CBDA-10) and sodium alginate (SA). The CBDA-10-SA film exhibited improved tensile strength (148 MPa) and UV shielding capabilities. The maximum thermal decomposition temperature was achieved of 249 °C. Compared to SA film, CBDA-10-SA showed increased antibacterial activities. In food packaging test, the CBDA-10-SA inhibited the rapid growth of potential of hydrogen (pH) value, slowed down the weight loss, reduced total plate count (TPC) value of pork, and delayed the spoilage process of pork. Notably, CBDA-10-SA displayed remarkable degradability in soil, with 60 % degrading in four weeks. In this study, CBDA-10-SA showed enhanced physicochemical and mechanical properties compared to traditional SA film. Those improvements make it anticipated to be used in not only food packaging but also mechanical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural fields.

Polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate hybrid materials with high conductivity and transparency performance for woven electrode fibers

Weichun Chen,Simu Zhu,Yifan Gu,Feng Xiong,Hao Lu,Xinzao Wu,Zong Qin,Shaozhi Deng,Bo-Ru Yang

Transparent conductive fibers play a pivotal role in developing advanced smart textiles for the future. Due to high flexibility and transparency, ionic hydrogel fibers have attracted great attention. Among them, the physically cross-linked hydrogel possesses non-volatility and low cost, which makes it an attractive transparent conductive material. However, the current physical cross-linked hydrogel suffers from low conductivity, transparency, and weak mechanical strength. A novel hybrid cross-linking strategy for ionic hydrogel through wet spinning has been proposed to address these issues. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) crystallizes to form a homogeneous and robust polymer network with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) that substitute for water. Simultaneously, sodium alginate (SA) also interacts with metal ions in DESs to further form a crosslinked network, which enhances both the mechanical and conductivity. The as-prepared hydrogel fiber exhibited great all-around performances, including remarkable conductivity (2.28 S/m), transparency (92%), high strength (3.01 MPa), and toughness (5.65 MJ/m 3 ). Furthermore, we demonstrated a 3×3 electroluminescent textile display matrix woven with luminescent fibers as warp and the prepared hydrogel fibers as weft yarns, which exhibited the potential value of the hydrogel fibers in textiles.

Insulin/PHMB-grafted sodium alginate hydrogels improve infected wound healing by antibacterial-prompted macrophage inflammatory regulation

Liu Dan,Yu Tianyi,Ma Shan,Su Lefeng,Zhong Shan,Wang Wenao,Liu Yang,Yu Jia-ao,Gao Min,Chen Yunsheng,Xu He,Liu Yan

Background Non-healing chronic wounds with high susceptibility to infection represent a critical challenge in modern healthcare. While growth factors play a pivotal role in regulating chronic wound repair, their therapeutic efficacy is compromised in infected microenvironments. Current wound dressings inadequately address the dual demands of sustained bioactive molecule delivery and robust antimicrobial activity. Results In this study, we developed a sodium alginate hydrogel (termed P-SA/Ins), which incorporated polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) grafting and long-acting glargine insulin loading. P-SA/Ins exhibited the favorable physicochemical performance, biocompatibility and antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens through inhibition of bacterial proliferation and biofilm formation. Glargine insulin was applied to prolonged insulin delivery. P-SA/Ins treatment attenuated S. aureus induced pro-inflammatory cytokine cascades in macrophages. The evaluation in vivo using a rat model with S. aureus infected wound demonstrated that P-SA/Ins significantly enhanced wound healing and optimized skin barrier through antimicrobial-mediated modulation of macrophage polarization and subsequent inflammatory cytokine profiling. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that P-SA/Ins promotes wound healing and restores epidermal barrier integrity, indicating its potential as a therapeutic dressing for chronic wound healing, particularly in cases with infection risk. Enhancement of phototoxicity against human pancreatic cancer cells with photosensitizer-encapsulated amphiphilic sodium alginate derivative nanoparticles

Zhong Yu,Huajie Li,Li-Ming Zhang,Zhaohua Zhu,Liqun Yang

Photosensitizer-encapsulated amphiphilic sodium alginate derivative (Photosan-CSAD) nanoparticles were prepared because of their ability to enhance phototoxicity in the photodynamic therapy of pancreatic cancer . These nanoparticles are spherical, 150–250   nm in size as determined by transmission electron microscopy , and have negative zeta potentials . Upon incubation with human pancreatic cancer cells, the Photosan-CSAD nanoparticles showed high fluorescence activity and reactive oxygen species generation, resulting in strong phototoxicity. However, no dark toxicity was observed. Apoptosis played a leading role in the cell death process induced by the Photosan phototoxicity. These results demonstrate that the Photosan-CSAD nanoparticles are a candidate for the photodynamic therapy of pancreatic cancer.

Research on the Corrosion Resistance of Waterborne Epoxy Resin Coating Enhanced by Sodium Alginate-Modified Ti3C2Tx

Yongxin Hu,Xiaoyu Mao,Changhua Li,Songlin He,Chuan Fu,Yi He

The enhancement of dispersion stability and interfacial compatibility of nanomaterials within aqueous epoxy matrices represents a pivotal strategy for augmenting the protective performance and corrosion resistance of coatings. In this study, Ti3C2Tx Mxene functionalized with sodium alginate (TSA) was obtained by introducing sodium alginate (SA) into Ti3C2Tx Mxene (T) to improve the corrosion resistance of aqueous epoxy coatings (EP). The dispersion stability of TSA in aqueous medium was quantitatively assessed via ζ-potential measurements, revealing a significant enhancement in stability compared to the reference material T. The long-term stability of TSA/EP composite coatings was systematically evaluated via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Notably, the charge transfer resistance (Rc) remained at 5 × 107 Ω·cm2 after a 60-day accelerated aging test, exhibiting exceptional electrochemical durability. Compared with pure EP coating, this value is improved by 2 orders of magnitude. The improvement is attributed to the fact that active −COOH and −OH groups on the surface of SA enhance the interactions between T nanosheets and EP matrix. Specifically, these functional groups form hydrogen bonds or chemical bonds at the interface. Such interfacial bonding mechanisms enhance the compatibility and interfacial adhesion between T and the EP matrix. These conclusions are further supported by manual scratching experiments. The accessibility and greenness of SA provide a simple and environmentally friendly way of thinking for modifying T.

Zinc-Ion–Cross-Linked Sodium Alginate-Wood Hydrogel Electrolyte for Supercapacitors via a Top-Down Design

Tai Feng,Xueqian Cao,Taixi Li,Rui Diao,Yidan Jing,Xiaomin Zhang,Jin Zhu

Cellulose-based hydrogels have gained prominence in hydrogel electrolyte substrate research due to their remarkable flexibility and renewable raw materials. However, cellulose hydrogels produced by traditional bottom-up synthesis strategies generally suffer from insufficient mechanical properties and low areal-specific capacitance in constructed capacitors. This study employs a top-down strategy, utilizing the natural cellulose framework of delignified wood as a structural substrate. Through the synergistic effects of in situ sodium alginate filling and gradient zinc perchlorate cross-linking, a zinc-ion–cross-linked wood-based hydrogel electrolyte (ZWH) was constructed. When the Zn 2+ concentration in the hydrogel electrolyte was 2 mol·L −1 , the resulting ZWH-2 material demonstrated breakthrough performance enhancements: achieving a mechanical strength of 9.47 MPa and exhibiting an ionic conductivity as high as 68.97 mS·cm −1 . Energy storage systems utilizing this electrolyte exhibited exceptional electrochemical performance. The activated carbon symmetric supercapacitor and zinc-activated carbon asymmetric supercapacitor achieved areal-specific capacitances of 165 and 361 mF·cm −2 at a current density of 2 mA·cm −2 . In this study, zinc ions serve dual roles as both cross-linkers for the hydrogel and electrolyte components, facilitating a multifunctional electrolyte system with bend resistance. This study offers innovative perspectives for creating sustainable, adaptable energy storage devices suitable for a broad temperature spectrum.

Preparation and Performance Study of Regenerated Tussah Silk Protein/Sodium Alginate/Polyvinal Alcohol Composite Film Materials

zhang Nan,Wang Qi wei,Ran Hui,You Na,Wang Yuan,Ji Jun ling

The inherent brittleness of regenerated tussah silk proteins and the difficulty in preparing a uniform sol pose significant challenges to subsequent material fabrication, resulting in poor mechanical properties. To address this issue, we employed a formic acid-CaCl 2 system to dissolve degummed tussah silk for the preparation of regenerated tussah silk protein, followed by characterization of its chemical structure and thermal stability by FTIR, XRD, SDS-PAGE, DSC and TG analyses. Subsequently, the regenerated tussah silk proteins were blended with sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to cast films, which were then crosslinked with CaCl 2 to fabricate composite film materials. The microscopic morphology, mechanical strength, water resistance, hydrophilicity, cytotoxicity (via MTT assay) of the prepared film materials were systematically characterized. Results showed that the molecular weight of the regenerated tussah silk proteins prepared using the formic acid-CaCl 2 system ranged from approximately 70 to 180 kDa, with a secondary structure predominantly composed of β-sheet. The genipin-treated regenerated silk protein formed a uniform and stable sol, and its film-forming property was significantly enhanced when blended with SA and PVA. After further cross-linking with CaCl 2 , a series of biodegradable film materials exhibiting ideal toughness, strength, water resistance, hydrophilicity and non-cytotoxicity were successfully fabricated, demonstrating promising potential for applications in skin wound healing, drug sustained-release, and related biomedical fields.

Hydrophobic, flexible, and flame-retardant sodium alginate/guar gum-based porous yarns for personal thermal management

Mengya Liu,Jing Guo,Xinbin Ji,Xuecui Song,Zheng Li,Qiang Yang,Rui Zhang,Fucheng Guan

Low-density, high-porosity porous fibers have garnered significant attention for the fabrication of wearable thermal management materials. However, the practical application of sodium alginate (SA) porous fibers is hindered by their inherent hydrophilicity, inadequate flexibility, and poor weavability. In this study, guar gum (GG) and boric acid (BA) were incorporated into SA via a directed freezing wet-spinning strategy, resulting in the formation of a multi-crosslinked network structure. Porous fibers with a porosity of up to 93.6 % were successfully fabricated. Furthermore, a hydrophobic surface layer composed of polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ)-modified silica microspheres was constructed. The resulting material exhibits outstanding hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 139.22°), as well as exceptional flame retardancy, achieving a limiting oxygen index of 47.63 % (UL-94V-0 rating). Importantly, the high porosity contributes to a low thermal conductivity of 0.037 W·m −1 ·K −1 , endowing the fabric with superior thermal insulation performance. The developed H-SA/GG/BA 0.4 fabric demonstrated temperature differentials of 10.2 °C on a high-temperature stage (75 °C) and 9.6 °C on a low-temperature stage (−20 °C), substantially outperforming conventional textiles such as cotton and polyester.

Multifunctional Carboxymethyl Chitosan/Sodium Alginate/Fucoidan Hydrogel as a Dressing for Hemostasis and Skin Wound Healing

Xinyue Gai,Yinghao Bi,Wen Zhao,Changlong Ren,Ming Chang,Miansong Zhang,Tingting Cui,Xue Liu,Airong Jia

Wound healing is a complicated process that involves hemostasis, antibacterial defense, and tissue regeneration. Conventional treatment methods, such as surgical suturing, have inherent limitations, necessitating the exploration of new ones. Hydrogels can create a moist environment that facilitates wound healing, making them an ideal material for wound healing. In this study, a procoagulant polysaccharide mixture (carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate/fucoidan; CAF) was designed. Hydrogels were prepared using CAF and an oxidized starch/tannic acid blend (OT) at different ratios. Through comprehensive evaluations, such as gelation time, swelling capacity, and antibacterial efficacy, an optimal hydrogel (COT) was identified. This COT hydrogel was formed by mixing 3% CAF and OT solutions at a ratio of 2:1 (v/v). The associated gelation process occurred rapidly within 13 s. COT hydrogel exhibited self-healing properties, and a high swelling rate (~3109 ± 74%). It also demonstrated high antibacterial activity, facilitating enhanced protection against infection. Additionally, COT hydrogel exhibited biocompatibility and biosafety. COT hydrogel demonstrated low cytotoxicity on mice fibroblast cells (L929) and good hemocompatibility in vitro. Moreover, in vivo evaluations revealed that it did not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Importantly, COT hydrogel significantly outperformed the commercially available hydrogel with its hemostatic and wound healing performance (p< 0.001,p< 0.01).

In-situ preparation and properties of bio-renewable acylated sodium alginate-g-polytetrahydrofuran/Ag-NPs nanocomposites

Yu-Zhuang Gao,Tian-Xiao Chang,Yi-Xian Wu

Biomass sodium alginate (SA) and biomass-derived ether tetrahydrofuran (THF) have drawn considerable attention due to their sustainability and bio-renewability. In this paper, the novel acylated sodium alginate- g -polytetrahydrofuran graft copolymers (ASA- g -PTHF) with various PTHF branches ( M n,PTHF  = 600–4800 g/mol, G N  = 3–20 per 1000 SA monosaccharide) could be successfully synthesized by combination of THF living cationic ring-opening polymerization with grafting-onto method. The microphase separation of ASA- g -PTHF graft copolymer formed via self-assembly from two kinds of segments in backbone and side chains and was emphasized by thermal annealing, leading to a remarkable increase in water contact angle on polymer surface even by 38.4°. The hydrophilicity and crystallization behavior of ASA- g -PTHF can be decreased with increasing M n,PTHF and G N , which confine the crystallization of graft copolymer. ASA- g -PTHF microspheres (~1 μm) loaded with ibuprofen shows pH sensitivity and reach 100% of drug-release at pH = 7.4 within 30 h. ASA- g -PTHF exhibits resistance to bovine serum albumin adsorption and its composite with small-scaled silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs, <2.6 wt%, 5–15 nm) generated in - situ behaves good antibacterial performance against E. coli and S. aureus . The ASA- g -PTHF would contribute to the better utilization of biomass and has promising for biomedical applications.

Novel dopamine-modified oxidized sodium alginate hydrogels promote angiogenesis and accelerate healing of chronic diabetic wounds

Jinhua Chi,Ai Li,Mingyu Zou,Shuo Wang,Chenqi Liu,Rui Hu,Zhiwen Jiang,Wanshun Liu,Rongju Sun,Baoqin Han

Herein, the dopamine (DA) was grafted with oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) via Schiff base reduction reaction, aiming to fabricate novel DA-grafted OSA (OSA-DA) hydrogels with enhanced biocompatibility and suitable adhesion for clinical applications. The chemical structures of OSA-DA were characterized via UV–Vis, FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy analysis. The hydrogel characteristics, biocompatibility, as well as the chronic diabetic wound healing efficacy were investigated. Our results demonstrated that DA was grafted with OSA successfully with highest grafting rate of 7.50%. Besides, OSA-DA hydrogels possessed suitable swelling ratio and appropriate adhesion characteristics. Additionally, OSA-DA exhibited satisfactory cytocompatibility and cell affinity in L-929 cells, and superior biocompatibility in SD rats. Moreover, OSA-DA exerted remarkable promoting effects on migration and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Studies on full-thickness excision chronic diabetic wounds further revealed that OSA-DA hydrogels could accelerate healing via promoting angiogenesis, reducing inflammation response, and stimulating collagen deposition. Overall, our studies would provide basis for SA-based hydrogels as clinical wound dressings.

Spunlace Cotton Nonwoven-Reinforced Sodium Alginate/Bamboo Charcoal Photothermal Hydrogel Evaporator for Solar-Driven Water Purification

Haifeng Zhang,Guangfu Chen,Hao He,Xia Zhu,Tonggang Liu

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation offers a low-energy and sustainable route for seawater desalination and the purification of complex water matrices. However, freestanding hydrogel evaporators often suffer from insufficient mechanical robustness and interfacial salt accumulation under high-salinity conditions. Herein, a spunlace cotton nonwoven/sodium alginate/bamboo charcoal (SC/SA/BC) composite interfacial evaporator was fabricated through a facile impregnation–ionic crosslinking strategy, using a spunlace cotton nonwoven (SC) as the reinforcing scaffold, sodium alginate (SA) as the hydrophilic hydrogel matrix, and bamboo charcoal powder (BC) as the photothermal component. The Ca2+-crosslinked SA network immobilized the bamboo charcoal particles and formed continuous hydrated mass-transport pathways, while the spunlace fibrous network provided capillary water-supply channels and robust mechanical support. Consequently, SC/SA/BC exhibited substantially improved mechanical performance compared with the freestanding SA/BC hydrogel. Under 1 sun irradiation using a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, SC/SA/BC achieved an evaporation rate of approximately 1.80 kg m−2h−1and maintained stable performance during 8 h of continuous operation. The evaporation–condensation process markedly reduced the concentrations of major ions in natural seawater and effectively retained nonvolatile dyes. Through the synergistic integration of a spunlace fibrous scaffold, a hydrated hydrogel network, and a bamboo-charcoal-based photothermal component, the proposed evaporator simultaneously achieved mechanical reinforcement, sustained water supply, efficient photothermal conversion, and salt-tolerant operation. This work provides a promising strategy for constructing structurally stable and readily fabricated solar interfacial evaporation materials.
