A novel ε-polylysine-modified microcrystalline cellulose based antibacterial hydrogel for removal of heavy metal

Xin Huang,Li Wang,Jiabo Zhang,Xiaojing Du,Shijia Wu,Hongxin Wang,Xinlin Wei

A new type of double-network hydrogel, cross-linked with microcrystalline cellulose grafted with ε-polylysine (MCC-PL) and N , N -methylene bisacrylamide/acrylic acid, was synthesised to efficiently inhibit bacterial proliferation and remove heavy metals. The physicochemical properties of the MCC-PL hydrogel (MCC-PLH) were characterised using scanning electronic microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis , and differential thermogravimetric analysis . The adsorption results showed that the optimal adsorption conditions were temperature of 313 K at pH of 5 and 6 of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , respectively. The adsorption mechanism of MCC-PLH5 was successfully determined using Freundlich isotherm, pseudo-second kinetics, and intra-particle diffusion model, in conjunction with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Adsorption thermodynamic studies indicated that the process was spontaneous and endothermic. Antibacterial experiments showed that PL-grafted MCC hydrogel exhibited more efficient and durable antibacterial activity than MCC, indicating its potential for water decontamination.

Highly thermally conductive yet mechanically robust composites with nacre-mimetic structure prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly approach

Hongxia Zeng,Jingyi Wu,Huijie Pei,Yangke Zhang,Yunsheng Ye,Yonggui Liao,Xiaolin Xie

Highly thermally conductive and mechanically strong nanocomposites for efficient thermal management have received wide attention because of the rapid development of modern electronics. Boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) with combined benefits of high thermal conductivity (TC) and good electrical insulation has been considered a promising filler to fabricate thermally conductive nanocomposites. Herein, inspired by biological systems, large-scale and high-performance artificial nacre-like composite composed of BNNS and oxidized cellulose nanocrystal (OCNC) is fabricated through simple evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) approach for the first time. Thanks to the template effect of OCNC host, BNNS and OCNC are self-assembled to form an artificial layer-by-layer nacre structure, where OCNC combined with the epoxy-based adhesive agent (AA) serves as the mortar to form a stiff and dense structure. The resulting BNNS-OCNC-AA composite at a relative low BNNS loading of 11.6 vol% exhibits a high in-plane thermal conductivity of 10.9 W/mK as well as the excellent tensile strength of 197.3 MPa, which are prominent compared to other composites fabricated via the various currently established methods under higher filler loadings (13.4 ~ 95 vol%). From the characterization results, we could attribute the multiple properties to the construction of the unique nacre-like structure and the robust interfacial interaction. The artificial nacre-like BNNS composite with excellent thermal and mechanical properties simultaneously has significant potential application for thermal management in flexible and wearable electronics fields.

Effects of cellulose/salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone complexes on PVA based hydrogels: Portable, reusable, and high-precision luminescence sensing of Cu2+

Yiying Yue,Jiamin Gu,Jingquan Han,Qinglin Wu,Jianchun Jiang

Novel portable, high-precision, and reusable fluorescent polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-borax hydrogel sensors were prepared to detect Cu 2+ in aqueous environment. A TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers/salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (TOCN/ST) complex was further incorporated into the PVA-borax matrix. The in situ polymerization of TOCN/ST complex enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogels and improved the accuracy of detection. The resultant hydrogels were thermo reversible, and it converted to the liquid state during heating, which could greatly reduce the deviations caused in the detection of solid sensors. After cooling, the hydrogel could transform into the solid condition, which was easily portable. The sensor induced a significant luminescence quenching to the Cu 2+ at 485 nm, with a detection limit of 0.086 μM. In the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium, Cu 2+ were tightly seized, causing the liberation of TOCN/ST complex and thus, a reversible “ON-OFF-ON” fluorescence behavior was displayed. The fluorescence intensity was maintained at 82 % after 10 uses, and the mechanical strength was maintained at 85 % after 3 uses. The anti-bacterial activity test also confirmed the TOCN/ST complex was extremely potent in suppressing the growth and reproduction of Escherichia coli . The proposed hydrogel provides a new insight into the detection of Cu 2+ in aqueous environments.

Light-Driven Halide Exchange Facilitates Complete Crystal Transformation in Nanostructured Perovskites

Liang Zhao,Changzhen Yin,Ting Long,Peng Hu,Zhenyu Yang

Colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have shown promise in visible and near-infrared light emission compared with conventional quantum dots because of their sharp and highly efficient emission. Light-driven halide exchange offers high degrees of tunability of perovskite NC composition and photoluminescence properties. A remaining challenge is the incomplete change between bromide and chloride due to the presence of radical quenchers. Herein, an optimized in situ halide exchange method of perovskite NCs is reported. Chloroform is used as the solvent and the precursor to effectively generate halide radicals and ions under ultraviolet light irradiation in an inert atmosphere. This strategy achieves complete crystal transformation in colloidal perovskite NCs such as CsPbBr3-to-CsPbCl3 and Cs4PbBr6-to-CsPbCl3. The exchange reaction rate can be further tuned by the presence of B-site dopants such as Zn2+ and Ce3+. The dopant cations are partially remained in the exchanged perovskite NCs, indicating the predominance of thermodynamic control in the crystal transformation.

Copper doping and organic sensitization enhance photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide: Efficient degradation of phenol and tetrabromobisphenol A

Xiaoyan Zhang,Yunning Chen,Qingkun Shang,Yingna Guo

A novel photocatalyst (Cu-TiO 2 @HQ) had been synthesized by combining Cu-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles with 8-Hydroxyquinoline (HQ) via hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic activities of Cu-TiO 2 @HQ were investigated by using phenol and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) as target pollutants, respectively. The results indicated that the degradation efficiencies of phenol and TBBPA by Cu-TiO 2 @HQ were 99.2% (in 30 min) and 99.4% (in 10 min) under visible light irradiation. Both of them were much better than that of pure TiO 2 (8.63% in 30 min) and Cu-TiO 2 (14.74% in 30 min). When phenol or TBBPA were degraded together with the reduction of Cr (VI), the reaction rate of each pollutant was significantly increased, and the cyclic stability of photocatalyst Cu-TiO 2 @HQ was greatly improved. Based on the spectroscopic and photoelectric characteristic analysis we found that in the mixture of phenol-Cr (VI) or TBBPA-Cr (VI) both photo-generated electrons and holes can be consumed simultaneously, thus preventing their recombination. The possible degradation products of phenol and TBBPA including its degradation path way were also analyzed by high resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry.

Assessment of solar-assisted electrooxidation of bisphenol AF and bisphenol A on boron-doped diamond electrodes

Jing Ding,Lingjun Bu,Bingxin Cui,Guanshu Zhao,Qingwei Gao,Liangliang Wei,Qingliang Zhao,Dionysios D. Dionysiou

Bisphenol (BP) analogues in wastewater effluent and groundwater pose a potential threat to human health due to their ability to disrupt steroidogenesis. A new solar-assisted electrochemical process (SECP) was developed and evaluated for the degradation of BP analogues. The effects of quenchers, current density, initial pH, supporting electrolyte, and aqueous matrix on the removal kinetics of bisphenol AF (BPAF) and bisphenol A (BPA) were investigated. The kinetic constants of BPAF, BPA, and bisphenol S (BPS) in the SECP with irradiation intensity of 500 mW cm −2 were 0.017 ± 0.002 min −1 , 0.022 ± 0.002 min −1 , and 0.012 ± 0.001 min −1 , respectively. The changes in the degradation rates of BPAF, BPA, and BPS in the presence of quenchers indicated the relative contribution of hydroxyl radical ( ● OH) oxidation, anodic electrolysis, and singlet ( 1 O 2 ) oxygenation in the degradation of BPs in the SECP. The enhanced rate of generation of ● OH and 1 O 2 was observed in the SECP compared with those in the conventional electrochemical system. The identification of the transformation products (TPs) of BPAF demonstrated that hydroxylation, ring cleavage, β-scission, and defluorination were the major processes during the oxidation in the SECP. The conversion to fluoride ions (76%) and mineralization of total organic carbon (72%) in the SECP indicated further degradation of TPs. The results from this study improved our understanding of the degradation of BP analogues in the electrooxidation irradiated by solar light and help to establish the application potential of the SECP for the effective degradation of emerging contaminants in wastewater.

Ultra-thin and highly flexible cellulose nanofiber/silver nanowire conductive paper for effective electromagnetic interference shielding

Yiming Chen,Liang Pang,Yang Li,Heng Luo,Gaigai Duan,Changtong Mei,Wenhui Xu,Wei Zhou,Kunming Liu,Shaohua Jiang

Exploring an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material with lightweight, flexible and easy fabricating process to deal with the increasingly serious electromagnetic environment pollution has become a current developing trend. Here, we reported a novel cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/silver nanowire (AgNW) conductive paper with a distinctive hierarchical structure by a facile “blending-filtration-peeling” process. Results showed that the obtained paper with a thickness of ~40 μm exhibited excellent tensile strength of ~49.1 MPa, a low percolation threshold of 1.4 vol% AgNWs, no significant changes in electrical conductivity after 2000 bending. The outstanding synergy between green CNFs and AgNWs endowed the paper with high EMI shielding effectiveness of up to 39.3 dB in X band and effective shielding effects on electromagnetic signals for realistic mobile phone communication. The special CNF/AgNW papers are expected to broaden new application fields as electronic devices e.g. flexible electronic components or effective ultra-thin EMI shielding materials for daily demands.

Preparation of Natural Multicompatible Silk Nanofibers by Green Deep Eutectic Solvent Treatment

Yanlei Hu,Liang Liu,Juan Yu,Zhiguo Wang,Yimin Fan

Natural silk fibers consist of well-organized, sophisticated hierarchical architectures that contribute to the robust mechanical performance and functions of the fibers; thus, the direct extraction of silk nanofibers (SNFs) at a single level is a major challenge. Herein, a novel simple, environmentally friendly, and recyclable route was developed to directly downsize natural silks into SNFs via a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) system assisted by mild mechanical disintegration. SNFs with diameters ranging from 2.3 to 28 nm and lengths of 598 ± 308 nm were isolated at a high yield (over 70%) under optimal DES pretreatment conditions. On the basis of the inherent amphoteric properties of SNFs, the pH sensitivity and reversibility were explored to lighten the weight of SNF dispersions for storage and transport, and furthermore, the double adsorption properties of the SNFs might functionalize them for transparent anticounterfeiting devices. In addition, the nanodispersibility of the SNFs in organic solvents and the subsequent nanofiber-containing composite materials with hydrophobic polymer matrixes provide new prospects for wound dressing and porous scaffold materials in biomedical applications.

Efficient fractionation of cellulose nanofibers using spiral microchannel

Wang Xiaojun,Li Runyu,Zeng Jinsong,Cheng Zheng,Wang Bin,Ding Qijun,Gao Wenhua,Chen Kefu,Xu Jun

Abstract Plant fiber isolated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are the materials with excellent mechanical properties. However, application of CNFs in polymer reinforcement is normally unsatisfactory due to its intertwined size distribution. Efforts to produce uniform sized CNFs have yet to be studied. In present work, spiral microchannel was used to fractionate CNFs based on the balance between inertial lift force (F L ) and Dean drag force (F D ) exerted on CNFs. The results showed that the smaller length of CNFs equilibrated near the inner microchannel while the larger length of CNFs occupied the equilibrium position away from the inner wall. With the increase of flowrates from 50 to 220 μL/min, fractionation efficiency between inner and middle outlet (E IM ) of spiral microchannel A with larger radius curvature (R) from 5 to 15 mm increased from 0 to 75.4%. However, stronger Dean flow attributing to decrease of R (3 mm to 10 mm) of single spiral microchannel B enabled satisfactory fractionation efficiency of 70.9% at flowrate of 90 μL/min. Moreover, the fractionation efficiency of double spiral microchannel with twice as length as microchannel A and three times as length as microchannel B was lower than that of single spiral microchannel at flowrate lower than 90 μL/min. Furthermore, this study exhibited a versatile and simple method for CNFs fractionation with high fractionation efficiency. Graphic abstract

Intelligent Cellulose Nanofibers with Excellent Biocompatibility Enable Sustained Antibacterial and Drug Release via a pH-Responsive Mechanism

Hui He,Meixiao Cheng,Yuting Liang,Hongxiang Zhu,Yupei Sun,Die Dong,Shuangfei Wang

Novel nanosized biomass-based pH-responsive cellulose nanofibers (CNF-PEI) with excellent biocompatibility were tailored by grafting polyethylenimine (PEI) onto carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF-COOH); the active site (−COOH, 0.96 mmol/g) was anchored on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) to introduce PEI with a high density (10.57 mmol/g) of amino groups. The as-prepared CNF-PEI not only maintained the good properties of CNFs but also possessed excellent biocompatibility and pH-responsive properties, offering interesting possibilities for pH-induced sustained drug release and medical dressing. The CNF-PEI showed rapid wettability conversion from hydrophilic, underwater superoleophobic (WCA = 20.7°, OCA = 159.3°) to hydrophobic, superoleophilic (WCA = 129.6°, OCA = 29.7°) in response to pH change from acidic conditions to alkaline conditions. The antibacterial activity of CNF-PEI toward Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes was 100% and 94.6% under acidic conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the pH-responsive mechanism of CNF-PEI was revealed by XPS, 13C NMR, 1H NMR, and AFM analyses.

An electrochemical and fluorescence dual-signal assay based on Fe3O4@MnO2 and N-doped carbon dots for determination of hydrogen peroxide

Zhu Wanying,Zhou Ying,Tao Mengdan,Yan Xiaoqiang,Liu Yan,Zhou Xuemin

A novel electrochemical and fluorescence dual-signal assay was developed for the determination of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) based on Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 and N-doped carbon dots (NCDs). Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 was not only applied as the recognizer for H 2 O 2 but also served as the fluorescence quencher and electrochemical enhancer. This permits the dual-signal readout of the analytical system. In the absence of H 2 O 2 , the NCDs were quenched by Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 , and the oxidation of the electrochemical probe ferrocene (Fc) was catalyzed by Fe 3 O 4 @MnO 2 . In the presence of H 2 O 2 , MnO 2 was reduced to Mn 2+ , leading to the fluorescence recovery of NCDs and the reduction in the oxidation signal of Fc. By combining the electrochemical method and the fluorescence assay, more comprehensive and valuable information for H 2 O 2 determination was provided to meet different analytical demands. The method exhibits good repeatability and selectivity with a detection limit of 1.0 μM for the fluorescence assay and 0.6 μM for the electrochemical method. The proposed approach holds great potential for probing released targets from living cells. Graphical abstract

Cellulose Nanofibril/Carbon Nanomaterial Hybrid Aerogels for Adsorption Removal of Cationic and Anionic Organic Dyes

Zhencheng Yu,Chuanshuang Hu,Anthony B. Dichiara,Weihui Jiang,Jin Gu

Advances in nanoscale science and engineering are providing new opportunities to develop promising adsorbents for environmental remediation. Here, hybrid aerogels are assembled from cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and carbon nanomaterials to remove cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and anionic dye Congo red (CR) in single and binary systems. Two classes of carbon nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplates (GnPs), are incorporated into CNFs with various amounts, respectively. The adsorption, mechanics and structure properties of the hybrid aerogels are investigated and compared among different combinations. The results demonstrate CNF–GnP 3:1 hybrid exhibits the best performance among all composites. Regarding a single dye system, both dye adsorptions follow a pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic and monolayer Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximal adsorption capacities of CNF–GnP aerogels for MB and CR are 1178.5 mg g−1and 585.3 mg g−1, respectively. CNF–GnP hybrid show a superior binary dye adsorption capacity than pristine CNF or GnP. Furthermore, nearly 80% of MB or CR can be desorbed from CNF–GNP using ethanol as the desorption agent, indicating the reusability of this hybrid material. Hence, the CNF–GnP aerogels show great promise as adsorption materials for wastewater treatment. Keywords:cellulose nanofibrils;graphene nanoplates;carbon nanotubes;aerogel;organic dyes;adsorption
