Recently, near-infrared phosphors have received a lot of attention due to their wide application in the field of detection and analysis, and it is urgent to develop efficient broadband NIR phosphors. In this paper, a conventional high-temperature solid-phase method was used to prepare a novel near-infrared phosphor CaGa 4 O 7 :Cr 3+ , Cr 4+ , which provides two emission bands ranging from 600 to 1000 nm and 1100–1600 nm. Although there are only four and five coordination sites in the CaGa 4 O 7 (CGO) lattice, the doping of the Cr 3+ ions in the CGO causes the Ga–O tetrahedral distortion into an octahedron , providing a favorable environment for the emission of the Cr 3+ ions. Under blue light excitation, Cr 3+ emits luminescence in the NIR I region from 600 to 1000 nm with a half-height width of up to 148 nm. With increasing Cr ion concentration , more and more Cr 4+ preferentially occupy the four coordinated Ga 3+ sites, and the intensity of the ultra-broad emission band in the NIR II region (1100 nm–1600 nm) increases with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 262 nm. To further optimize the emission spectrum , Yb 3+ was codoped into CGO: Cr 3+ , Cr 4+ , the energy transfers from Cr 3+ to Yb 3+ in CGO was found, thus filling the gap between 1000 and 1100 nm in the CGO emission spectrum and obtaining a more complete ultra-wide spectrum. Moreover, the luminescence mechanism, energy transfer efficiency, and quantum yield are also studied in detail, and the ability of CaGa 4 O 7 :Cr 3+ , Cr 4+ , and Yb 3+ luminescent materials to achieve ultra-broadband efficient near-infrared emission was demonstrated.

Highly sensitive optical thermal sensing is achieved here based on the three-photon upconversion luminescence of Y2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ nano-thermometers. In the temperature range of 303–783 K, the 4G11/2 and 2H9/2 energy levels of Er3+ ion embedded in Y2O3 nanocrystals are found to be thermally linked. The 4G11/2–4I15/2 and 2H9/2–4I15/2 transitions’ intensity ratio thus satisfies the Boltzmann distribution. It is demonstrated that the relative sensitivity, on the basis of this ratio for temperature measurement, is as high as 2.05% K−1 at 303 K. It is, to the best of our knowledge, the maximum thermal sensitivity reported so far for the 4G11/2–4I15/2 and 2H9/2–4I15/2 transitions in various hosts. Moreover, this sensitivity is larger than all previously reported values that depend on the luminescence of the Er3+ ion. What's more, this value is also among the highest sensitivities achieved based on other thermally linked states of rare earth ions. As an added benefit, it has been shown that the single 2H9/2–4I15/2 transition can also be used for optical thermal sensing and its relative sensitivity is up to 1.27% K−1 at 783 K, which is 2.9 times the theoretical maximum sensitivity of ratiometric thermal detection based on the thermally linked states of rare earth ions.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphors have been extensively used in the fields of biological imaging, night vision monitoring, and food safety inspection. Although Cr3+ doping phosphors have been widely reported, achieving broadband and tunable NIR emissions remains challenging. In this work, Cr3+-doped LiSc2SbO6 broadband NIR phosphors were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method. LiSc2SbO6:Cr3+ exhibits a wide emission band of 780–1400 nm. By [Mg2+–Mg2+] co-substituting the [Li+–Sc3+] chemical units, controllable emission is achieved with the emission peak tuning in the range of 890–950 nm, FWHM in the range of 215–239 nm, and the maximum intensity increased by 1.51 times. On co-doping with Yb3+ ions, the luminous intensity of the Li0.7Mg0.6Sc1.7SbO6:0.02Cr3+,0.05Yb3+ (LMSS:Cr3+,Yb3+) phosphor has been further enhanced by 5.62 times. Thus, the LMSS:Cr3+,Yb3+ phosphor has great potential in the field of anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. By combining LMSS:Cr3+,Yb3+ with a commercial blue LED chip, the obtained NIR pc-LED performs well in night vision and non-destructive testing applications.

BaMoO 4 : Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors with different concentrations have been fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method . The morphology observation shows that the shape and size of BaMoO 4 powders change after Er 3+ /Yb 3+ doping. The upconversion luminescence spectra consist of intense green bands centered at 536 and 558 nm and a weak red emission band peaked at 668 nm upon 980 nm excitation. The excitation power and doping concentration have little impacts on the color emitted from the samples. Applying the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, the temperature sensing behaviors are investigated based on thermally coupled levels ( 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 ) and non-thermally coupled levels ( 4 F 9/2 and 4 S 3/2 ), respectively. The thermometry is sensitive to the excitation power for 4 F 9/2 and 4 S 3/2 levels, leading to large measurement errors caused by the power variation. Such a problem can be solved by using the power-insensitive FIR between 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 levels, which also shows the advantage of high absolute sensitivity with the maximum of 110.7 × 10 −4 K −1 . So, the developed BaMoO 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors can be applied in green light upconverters, display devices and temperature sensors .

Core–shell structured up-conversion luminescent and mesoporous NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@nSiO2@mSiO2 nanospheres were prepared by coating mesoporous SiO2 layers with different thicknesses on NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles via a simple two-step sol–gel process. The obtained sample shows a typical mesoporous structure and well-dispersed spherical morphology with a narrow size distribution. The nanospheres exhibit little cytotoxicity (via MTT assay), and ibuprofen (IBU) was used as a model drug to access the release properties of the system in detail. The amount of IBU adsorbed in mesoporous channels increases with the thickness of the ordered mesoporous silica shell coated on the NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles. The in vitro release study of IBU reveals a release profile in two steps: an initial diffusion-controlled release, followed by a slower release rate. Furthermore, upon excitation by a 980 nm near-infrared laser, the nanospheres emit green (2H11/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) and red (4F9/2 → 4I15/2) fluorescence of Er3+ even after the loading of IBU. Interestingly, the emission intensity of Er3+ in the bifunctional (mesoporous and luminescence) drug carrier increases with an increase of the cumulative released amount of the model drug (IBU). Thus, the extent of drug release can be easily identified, tracked, and monitored based on the change of the up-conversion luminescence. These results suggest that the core–shell structured NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@nSiO2@mSiO2 nanospheres are a promising material for controlled drug release.

Monodisperse β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ (NYF) hexagonal microplates with efficient near-infrared (NIR)-to-NIR up-conversion (UC) developed via a new ion-exchange modified hydrothermal method are reported. Ion exchange modification (IEM) not only significantly increases the UC intensity by up to 1000 times and prolongs the emission lifetimes of Tm3+ and Yb3+, but also enables the monodisperse morphology and size of hexagonal microplates to be maintained. A high UC quantum efficiency (QE) of 3.1% is obtained for IEM β-NaYF4:20%Yb3+,1%Tm3+ when excited with 980 nm light at a power density of 10 W cm−2. The UC emission properties can be finely tailored by changing the NaF/NYF molar ratio (NYF represents lanthanide doped β-NaYF4) and the doping concentration of Tm3+. The two photon NIR UC emission centered at ∼803 nm (arising from Tm3+: 3H4 → 3H6) dominates the UC emission spectrum and high concentrations of Tm3+ favor NIR UC further. A proof-of-concept optical image of printed patterns is demonstrated to verify their applications in security. These results suggest the promising applications of the newly developed monodisperse β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ hexagonal microplates in security, luminescent labels, solid-state lasers, amplifiers, and biomedicine.

To develop high-sensitivity optical thermometers, Yb3+/Tm3+-codoped La2Mo3O12 microparticles were synthesized by the sol–gel method. With the aid of in situ X-ray diffraction, the resultant microparticles are verified to possess negative thermal expansion (NTE) properties. When excited at 980 nm, the upconversion (UC) emission properties of final products are investigated, in which their strongest fluorescence intensities are reached at x = 0.07. Due to the coexistence of the increased energy transfer, cross-relaxation, and nonradiative relaxation procedures, the as-prepared microparticles present thermochromic UC emissions. Moreover, the intensity of UC emission arising from the 3F2,3 excited level at 583 K is 21 times higher than its starting value at 303 K, resulting in thermally enhanced luminescence in resultant microparticles. By employing the fluorescence intensity ratio technique to investigate the temperature-related intensities of UC emissions from 1G4 and 3F2,3 levels, the thermometric characterization of designed compounds is explored, where its highest absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.44 K–1 and 7.37% K–1, respectively. Furthermore, according to the temperature-related lifetimes of 1G4 and 3F2,3 levels of Tm3+, the relative sensitivities of developed microparticles are 0.36% and 0.23% K–1, respectively. Ultimately, visual optical thermometry is also realized by the studied samples owing to their thermochromic UC emissions. Our findings propose a facile strategy by employing NTE to regulate the UC emission behaviors of rare-earth ions so as to obtain high-sensitive luminescent materials.

To settle the challenges of optical thermometry with high sensitivity, a series of Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped Y2Mo3O12 (YMO:Tm3+/2xYb3+) submicron particles were developed via a sol–gel route. Excited by 980 nm, bright upconversion (UC) emissions of Tm3+ are observed, in which the optimum intensity is realized when the Yb3+ concentration is 13 mol %. Moreover, the UC mechanism of the emissions originating from the 1G4 level is a three-photon absorption process, while that of the emission from the 3F2,3 level is a two-photon absorption process. Furthermore, thermally enhanced emission intensities are realized in the studied compounds due to the negative thermal expansion effect. Notably, owing to the coexistence of improved energy transfer and cross-relaxation processes at elevated temperature, the intensities of the UC emissions from the 1G4 level increase and then decrease with raising the temperature, whereas that of the UC emission from the 3F2,3 level is enhanced monotonously as temperature increases. Via analyzing the inconsistent thermal quenching characteristics of the UC emissions, we explored the thermometric behaviors of the synthesized products and found that their sensitivities are dependent on the spectral mode. Through investigating the dependence of the emission intensity rate of the emissions from 3F2,3 → 3H6 to 1G4 → 3F4 transitions on temperature, one knows that the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of the resultant submicron particles are 0.198 K–1 and 3.27% K–1, respectively. Additionally, the thermometric behaviors of YMO:Tm3+/2xYb3+ submicron particles can also be manipulated via altering the Yb3+ concentration.

High contrast is realized via switchable excitation in Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped molybdates. • Electrospun PMMA/TPU binary networks achieved fiber-welding for 400% stretchability. • Hydrophobic encapsulation with a large contact angle impedes moisture ingress. • Excellent thermal stability is verified by 90% retained emission intensity at 373 K. • Strain sensing and dual-mode encryption broaden application prospects for smart skin. Smart adaptive optoelectronic skins represent a critical foundation for next-generation wearable electronics, spurring extensive research into intelligent platforms that simultaneously harness mechanical compliance and excitation-dependent emissions to execute complex, multi-level security interactions. Pristine microcrystalline Li 2 Gd 4 (MoO 4 ) 7 : Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors display dual-mode emissions, yielding green under near-ultraviolet excitation and orange-red under 980 nm irradiation due to tailored energy transfer pathways, yet inherent structural brittleness completely prevents their direct deployment in flexible configurations. Overcoming this fundamental bottleneck relies on encapsulating these phosphors via electrospinning within a binary polymeric blend consisting of polymethyl methacrylate and thermoplastic polyurethane, yielding hybrid fibrous networks with exceptional stretchability up to 400% elongation driven by microscopic fiber-welded junctions optimizing tensile load distribution. Crucially, sophisticated multi-environmental modulation is manifested within these flexible scaffolds, where the photoluminescence intensity is dynamically governed by tensile strain due to shifting spatial densities, while this dense polymeric network maintains stable luminescence at 373 K and provides a superior hydrophobic barrier maintaining static water contact angles beyond 100°. Synergizing this strain-responsive sensing with the excitation-switchable dual-color outputs enables successful dual-functional integration of precise kinesiologic tracking and multi-level information cryptography, paving a promising way for self-supported smart skins and advanced optical information security.

To achieve efficient degradation of organic pollutants, two critical objectives are enhancing photogenerated carrier separation and expanding the spectral response range. In this study, we synthesized atom-sharing Bi/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ (Bi/BYT) heterojunctions with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects and upconversion (UC) by employing self-sacrificial Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ (BYT) fractions as a source of metallic Bi. Results revealed that the optimal Bi/BYT-2 catalyst exhibited the highest BPA degradation efficiency within 120 min, representing a significant 1.3-fold improvement over BYT alone. This outstanding catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic interplay between UC fluorescence, the unique SPR effect of Bi metal, and the atom-sharing heterojunction. These factors effectively broaden the spectral absorption range and significantly enhance the separation and utilization efficiency of photoinduced carriers. This study lays the groundwork for the development and design of novel atomic-level contact heterojunctions, offering insights into enhancing photocatalytic efficiency through plasmon resonance and UC fluorescence on non-precious metal surfaces.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) lighting sources are applied in non-destructive examination and illumination supplements for night monitoring. As a critical component of NIR pc-LED, NIR phosphors are required to possess a high external quantum efficiency (EQE), super thermal stability, and broadband emission to meet applications. Here, Na 2 SrGe 6 O 14 :Cr 3+ (NSGO:Cr) glass ceramics (GC) bulk via highly crystallization from glass precursor is fabricated and demonstrates an ultrabroad emission band centered at 815 nm with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 214 nm and a high EQE of 49.2%. Moreover, Yb 3+ co-doping significantly enhances Cr 3+ → Yb 3+ energy transfer (ET) due to the stronger Yb 3+ : 2 F 7/2 - 2 F 5/2 absorption. Benefiting from the ET process, the Cr/Yb co-doped GC exhibits NIR-I/II emission with improved thermal stability from 30.1% to 65.0%. Furthermore, an encapsulant-free NIR GC-converted LED (GCc-LED) is prepared and exhibits 52.2 mW NIR output power with a high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.4%. Under a large current of 600 mA, the NIR device exhibits a watt-level output power of 922.4 mW with a PCE of 9.1%. Compared to conventional NIR powder phosphors, NSGO:Cr/Yb GC with high performance can open up an avenue for the fabrication of high power NIR lighting sources.

Due to the characteristics of non-contact, high sensitivity and spatial resolution, nanoscale optical thermometry is necessary in many applications such as micro/nano electronics, integrated optics and biomedicine. Herein, we report the synthesis of Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped AlN (AlN:Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ ) nanorods using an arc discharge method and investigate their phase, composition and morphology using XRD, Raman, XPS, EDS, ICP, SEM and TEM. The nanorods with rectangular cross-section are highly single crystalline and have a uniform smooth surface. Upon excitation at 980 nm, AlN:Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ nanorods exhibit up-conversion (UC) visible emission bands (around 544, 595 and 667 nm) and near-infrared emission bands (around 755 and 806 nm), which correspond to intra-4f electron transitions of the Nd 3+ ions. Later, the temperature dependence of UC luminescence behavior was systemically studied using luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technique. It was verified that LIRs with non-thermally coupled levels ( 4 G 7/2 / 4 F 5/2 or 4 G 7/2 / 4 F 7/2 ) are suitable for temperature sensing. The maximum relative sensitivity based on 4 G 7/2 / 4 F 7/2 is 4.63% K −1 at 298 K, which is one of the highest values reported for optical thermometers. This work provides an efficient method for synthesizing wide-band gap semiconductors with doped size-mismatched functional atoms that can be used for high-sensitivity optical thermometry.
