This study focused on the fabrication of a peculiar 3D/2D ZnIn 2 S 4 /oxygen-doped graphitic carbon nitride (ZnIn 2 S 4 /SO-GCN) through a simple hydrothermal method . The flower-like morphology of hexagonal ZnIn 2 S 4 disperse on the SO-GCN nanosheets are evidenced by XRD , scanning and transmission electron microscopy . The as-synthesized nanocomposites were intensively applied for the visible light photocatalytic removal of aqueous phase 2,4-D. The heterojunction creation and the well-developed combined interface between ZnIn 2 S 4 and SO-GCN significantly increases its photogenerated charge separation capability. The photo-degradation mechanism disclose that the heterojunction has improved catalytic degradation activity, due to efficient transferring of photogenerated electron-holes pairs. Under visible-light irradiation, these nanocomposites showed 3–5 times higher degradation rate of 2,4-D (i.e. 0.0112/min, by 30%-ZnIn 2 S 4 /SO-GCN), as compared to solo ZnIn 2 S 4 and SO-GCN, attributed to the composite’s synergistic effect in unique 3D/2D heterojunction, that accelerates the electron-hole separation. The h + and •OH species contribute a noteworthy role in the degradation process of 2,4-D over 30%-ZnIn 2 S 4 /SO-GCN. In addition, the synthesized nanocomposites sustained their reusability performance in five cyclic run. Our research have implications of constructing 3D/2D nanocomposites which is beneficial for scalable solution of efficient photocatalysts .

Broadening the range of light absorption and inhibiting charge carrier's recombination are vital to improving photocatalytic activity. In this study, a novel full spectrum light-driven carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified 2D-2D ZnIn 2 S 4 /BiOCl van der Waals (VDW) heterostructures were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. It exhibits remarkable degradation efficiency for removing various antibiotics from water (i.e. tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible and near-infrared (NIR) light. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance is due to the 2D-2D VDW heterostructures and CQDs not only accelerate the interfacial charge separation and transfer but also provide massive reactive canters to facilitate degradation reaction. Besides, the optical absorption capacity of CQDs modified 2D-2D ZnIn 2 S 4 /BiOCl VDW heterostructures are obviously enhanced because of the up-conversion photoluminescence (UC-PL) properties of CQDs. Furthermore, the degradation process of TC is assessed by three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEMs) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass (LC-MS/MS) spectrometry analysis. Active species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) testify that O 2 − , OH, and holes play a crucial part in the photocatalytic degradation process. This work affords a new promising approach for CQDs modified 2D/2D VDW heterojunction with enhanced photoactivity in organic pollutant degradation for full spectrum light utilization.

Persistent light-emitting materials (PLMs), which have the potential to store and release light energy after light irradiation, are receiving increasing attention for their role in prolonging the lifetime of photogenerated electrons for the development of photocatalysts with round-the-clock applications. In this paper, a double S-scheme Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ /ZnIn 2 S 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 (SZU) heterojunction with round-the-clock catalytic activity was prepared by hydrothermal self-assembly method. The photocatalytic performance of the SZU heterojunction for RhB(MB) degradation was significantly improved compared with the pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 and UiO-66-NH 2 . The SZU heterojunction has excellent catalytic degradation performance for RhB (MB), and the removal rate of RhB (MB) reaches 72.2 % (81.7 %) after visible light irradiation for 40 (60) minutes. After the end of light, the total removal rate of RhB (MB) reached 86.7 % (96.8 %) when the catalysis continued for several hours under dark conditions, which was 14 % and 15 % higher than that under visible light irradiation, respectively. Based on the characteristics of SMS photoluminescence, combined with a large number of photocatalytic experiments, The sustained photocatalytic activity was enhanced under both daytime and darkness conditions, not only because of the production of SZU complexes, which prolonged the visible light response of ZnIn 2 S 4 , but also because of the construction of double S-scheme heterojunctions, which facilitates the light storage capacity, charge transfer, and the separation of photo-induced charge carriers and effectively promoted the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the design of round-the-clock photocatalysts, and provides a useful exploration for the practical application of photocatalytic technology.

The construction of ultra-close 2D atomic-thickness Van der Waals heterojunctions with high-speed charge transfer still faces challenges. Here, we synthesized single-layer ZnIn 2 S 4 and g-C 3 N 4 , and introduced silver single atoms to regulate Van der Waals heterojunctions at the atomic level to optimize charge transfer and catalytic activity. At the atomic scale, the impact of detailed structural differences between the two characteristic surfaces of ZnIn 2 S 4 ([Zn-S 4 ] and [In-S 4 ]) on catalytic performance has been first proposed. Experiments combined with the DFT study demonstrate that single atom Ag not only acts as a charge transfer bridge but also regulates the energy band and intrinsic catalytic activity. Benefiting from the enhanced electron delocalization, the synthesized catalyst ZIS/Ag@CN exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance, with a hydrogen production rate of 5.50 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is much higher than the reported Ag-based single-atom catalysts so far. This work provides a new understanding of atomic-level heterojunction interface regulation and modification.

Developing highly active photocatalysts that can directly utilize clean, cheap, and sustainable solar energy to achieve an efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) cycloaddition reaction under mild reaction conditions (1 bar of CO2) remains a great challenge. In this paper, 2D/2D ZnIn2S4/Zn-NC S-scheme heterojunction composites were constructed by the in situ growth of layered ZnIn2S4 on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) ZIF-L-derived Znδ+ (0 ≤ δ ≤ 2) and N codoped carbon skeletons (Zn-NC-T) via a low-temperature solvothermal method. The optimized ZnIn2S4/Zn-NC-T photocatalysts exhibited favorable photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition performance, and the yield of cyclic carbonate reached about 98.8% under 10 mmol epoxides reactant, 1 bar CO2 pressure, and full-spectrum irradiation for 4 h. The favorable photocatalytic performance is attributed to the efficient photothermal conversion and effective separation of photogenerated carriers induced by the carbon matrix and heterojunctions, respectively. In addition, the stability of the heterojunction structure and activity were demonstrated through cyclic experiments. Furthermore, the possible mechanism of S-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition is proposed through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments, and quenching experiments. The mechanism analysis proved that light irradiation is conducive to the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of ZnIn2S4 to epoxides, promoting the formation of ring-opening intermediates, and photogenerated holes may promote the coordination and polarization of adsorbed epoxides. This work not only prepared an S-scheme heterojunction catalyst with excellent photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition performance but also provided new insights for the rational design of heterojunction catalysts for photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition.

ZnIn2S4nanosheets are a promising photoanode for driving photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen fuel production; nevertheless, poor charge separation and sluggish surface reaction kinetics hinder its PEC performance to an extreme degree. Herein, a facile element doping strategy (i.e., P element) was developed to obtain the desired photoanode. As a result, the ZnIn2S4-P (ZIS-P5) photoanode exhibits a remarkable photocurrent density of 1.66 mA cm−2at 1.23 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) and a much lower onset potential of 0.12 V vs. RHE for water oxidation. Careful electrochemical analysis confirms that the P doping and sulfur vacancies (Sv) not only facilitate the hole transfer, but also boost surface reaction kinetics. Finally, the “killing two birds with one stone” goal can be achieved. Moreover, the optimized photoanode also presents high PEC performance for urea oxidation, obtaining a photocurrent density of 4.13 mA cm−2at 1.23 V vs. RHE. This work provides an eco-friendly, simple and effective method to realize highly efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Utilizing metal–organic frameworks as templates to synthesize photocatalysts has garnered increasing attention thanks to their substantial advantages. In this study, Cu-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 with hollow tubular structures was ingeniously synthesized using MIL-68-NH 2 as a template for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production in ambient air and pure water under visible light. The hollow tubular structures promote light penetration and reflection, furnish substantial accessible reactive sites and accelerate the diffusion of reactants and products. Cu doping notably varies the band configuration of ZnIn 2 S 4 , resulting in a narrower bandgap and a lower conduction band potential. Their cooperative effects enable a respectable H 2 O 2 production from oxygen reduction reactions. The hollow tubular ZnIn 2 S 4 and corresponding Cu-doped counterpart achieved high H 2 O 2 yields of 1153 and 1616 μmol·L −1 , respectively, 3.6 and 5.1 times-increase compared with that of ordinary ZnIn 2 S 4 prepared without MIL-68-NH 2 . This work would provide a new perspective on ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts and provoke the study on the green synthesis of H 2 O 2 .

In this study, we explored the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (RhB) via 2.0 wt% I–Bi 2 S 3 , ZnIn 2 S 4 , and their composite ZnIn 2 S 4 /2.0 wt% I–Bi 2 S 3 under visible light irradiation. While 2.0 wt% I–Bi 2 S 3 revealed insignificant photocatalytic activity, ZnIn 2 S 4 showed outstanding efficiency, degrading 94.7% of MO in 150 min and 98.9% of RhB in just 35 min. The composite achieved even better performance, 95% MO degradation (150 min) and 99.7% RhB degradation (35 min), demonstrating a synergistic effect between 2.0 wt% I–Bi 2 S 3 and ZnIn 2 S 4 . TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS, UV–Vis DRS, ESR, photoelectrochemistry, and PL tests were performed to characterize the structure, morphology, and separation efficiency of the products. According to kinetic studies, the photocatalytic degradation kinetics of rhodamine B and methyl orange exhibited various patterns. For Rhodamine B (RhB), a nonlinear exponential decay function was applied to obtain the rate constants, yielding k = 0.17186 ± 0.00147 min⁻ 1 for ZnIn 2 S 4 and k = 0.25567 ± 0.00405 min⁻ 1 for the composite with R 2 = 0.99. This outcome indicates that RhB degradation follows first order kinetics closely. While the degradation of methyl orange fulfills R 2 ≈ 0.93, which means it is less consistent with the first order model. The computed rate constants were k = 0.01171 ± 0.00157 min⁻ 1 for ZnIn 2 S 4 and k = 0.01362 ± 0.00184 min⁻ 1 for the composite. MO degradation is characterized by pseudo-first order behavior due to the deviation from linearity of a first order reaction. The boost in photocatalytic degradation was related to the reduction in electron–hole recombination that resulted from the creation of a heterostructure and a doping strategy. This study shows the potential of ZnIn 2 S 4 -based composites as high-performance photocatalysts for environmental remediation, displaying an exceptional solution for effectively eliminating hazardous organic dyes from wastewater.

ZnIn 2 S 4 is a promising and typical semiconductor for photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen production. However, the low charge-carrier utilization restricts its hydrogen evolution performance and practical application. In this work, a synergistic strategy of sulfur vacancy (S v ), internal electric field (IEF) and Mo-S bond was utilized for improving the charge-carrier utilization of MoS 2 /S v -MnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 composites. In particular, Z-scheme S v -MnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction not only tackled the charge-carrier recombination problem but also improved the redox capability. Meanwhile, Schottky-type MoS 2 /S v -MnS contact further promoted the charge transfer through Mo-S bond “bridge”, accelerated the surface hydrogen reduction reaction kinetics, and thus boosted the charge-carrier utilization. As a result, the optimal MoS 2 /S v -MnS/ZnIn 2 S 4 catalysts could expeditiously produce 1.75 mL of hydrogen production within 3 h, and achieve a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 13.02 mmol g -1 h -1 . This work provides an ingenious method to synthesize ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts with highly-efficient charge-carrier utilization.

Visible-light purification of contaminated waters is often constrained by rapid charge recombination and strong matrix interference, especially in complex real wastewaters. Here, we upcycled rice-noodle waste into carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and integrated them with ZnIn 2 S 4 to construct three-dimensional CQDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 nanoflowers. Optimising the CQDs loading at 3 wt% enabled the composite to remove 50 mg L −1 of pollutants within 120 min under visible irradiation, achieving 99.3% Cr(VI) reduction and complete methylene blue (MB) degradation with apparent first-order rate constants of 0.0192 min −1 (Cr(VI)) and 0.0223 min −1 (MB). The photocatalyst resisted matrix inhibition, with removals reaching 93.1% (Cr(VI)) and 91.6% (MB) in wastewaters, and above 95% in tap, lake and river waters; catalytic activity was retained above 95% after five reuse cycles. Valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) band alignment analysis, together with transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photoluminescence (PL)and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical-trapping experiments collectively verified an S-scheme CQDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction with an interfacial built-in electric field that drives vectorial charge separation and preserves highly reductive electrons and oxidative holes at spatially distinct sites. This waste-to-resource strategy couples low-cost carbon precursors with interfacial band engineering to deliver a scalable, visible-light-driven platform for simultaneous detoxification of inorganic (Cr(VI)) and organic dye pollutants in realistic treatment scenarios.

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) synthesis in pure water (H 2 O) is challenging because it requires simultaneous efficient charge separation and selective two-electron oxygen reduction. Herein, we report an S-scheme Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/ZnIn 2 S 4 (MZ) heterojunction that synergistically regulates interfacial charge flow and surface oxygen (O 2 ) adsorption configuration. The optimized MZ-15 achieves a H 2 O 2 production rate of 3917.3 μmol g −1 h −1 in pure water without sacrificial agents. The S-scheme pathway promotes charge separation while preserving strong redox capability. More importantly, the pronounced ionic-radius mismatch between Mn 2+ and Cd 2+ in Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S induces an asymmetric electronic environment that shifts O 2 adsorption from side-on to end-on (Pauling-type) configuration, thereby favoring O O bond retention and two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e − ORR). This work highlights that simultaneous engineering of interfacial charge dynamics and O 2 adsorption geometry is a powerful strategy for highly selective photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production An S-scheme Mn 0.2 Cd 0.8 S/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction achieves coupled interfacial charge-flow engineering and Pauling-type O 2 adsorption to realize selective 2e⁻ ORR for H 2 O 2 production in sacrificial‑agent‑free pure water. The polymeric membrane encounters huge challenge in dealing with high-viscosity oil pollutants and complicated membrane fouling issues. Herein, the multi-functional polymeric composite membrane (ZCP) is fabricated via anchoring bio-adhesive dopamine bridged gear-like CuS–ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure onto PAN nanofiber support, which hits three birds with one stone. Firstly, the unique three-dimensional gear-like structure confers the ultra-low oil adhesion and high permeability to membrane by constructing underwater superoleophobicity (UWCA: up to 157.1° ± 1.6°) and providing efficient mass transfer channels, as confirmed by Molecular dynamics simulation and Hermia equation-fitted blocking models. The ZCP membrane demonstrates superior separation flux (3921.44 ± 196.1 L m −2 h −1 ) and separation efficiency (up to 99.53 %) for diverse oil-in-water emulsions. Besides, the ZCP membrane shows remarkable durability in harsh conditions and cyclic separation stability. Secondly, dopamine bridged CuS–ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure mitigates charge recombination, strengthens electron transfer, and extends light absorption, which results in favorable photocatalytic self-cleaning via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Under simulated sunlight and low PMS input, the ZCP membrane exhibits high-efficiency catalytic degradation of organic pollutants within 60 min (97.9 % tetracycline and 100 % dye degradation rates) and effective self-cleaning for membrane regeneration (98.51 ± 2.4 % flux recovery rate). Moreover, the band structure, charge transfer, and mechanism of photocatalytic PMS activation are elucidated. Thirdly, owing to the photothermal conversion function of CuS–ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure, the membrane surface temperature reaches 61.7 °C within 15 s, thus efficiently reducing oil viscosity and achieving 102.04 % enhancement in permeation flux during the simulated O/W separation application. This work opens a new avenue for treatment of complex emulsified oily wastewater and membrane fouling control.
