High-performance cellulose-based engineering materials derived from coconut shell

Jinzhou Huang,Zhibo Yang,Jianmin Xue,Kai Tang,Yufang Zhu,Chengtie Wu

Cellulose-based materials are gaining attention as sustainable alternatives to petroleum derivatives due to their minimal environmental impact and carbon emission. However, inherent limitations of cellulose-based materials, such as soft, irregular shape and inflammable, have hindered their broader application in engineering fields. Herein, we presented an “extraction-strengthening-reassembly” strategy to develop renewable and high-performance cellulose/zirconia (Zr@CSU) composite bulk materials through in-suit growth ZrO 2 strengthening phase on the capsule-shaped cellulose units extracted from discarded coconut shell. The reassembled Zr@CSU bulks not only showed the similar microstructure of natural coconut shells, but also possessed enhanced mechanical properties due to the strengthening of microcrystal interfaces between building units. Zr@CSU bulks had flexural strength of 101.86 MPa, modulus of 14.15 GPa and fracture toughness of 1.48 MPa m 1/2 . In addition, the zirconia reinforced components enable Zr@CSU with lower peak values of heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR), showing superior flame resistance. Furthermore, scalable Zr@CSU bulks with various sizes could be easily assembled and showed good processability. This sustainable approach provides a pathway for reducing biomass residues and carbon emissions, and creating high-value engineering materials from renewable resources.

Highly elastic layered carboxymethyl cellulose-based porous materials for sensing

Peng Shen,Xingjie Wang,Lijun Wang,Xuejin Zhang,Zhixin Jia,Jingshun Zhuang,Junli Ren,Minmin Chang

Cellulose-based porous materials have attracted plenty of attention in advanced materials due to their satisfactory porosity, biocompatibility, and sustainability. However, pore collapse caused by hydrogen bonds between cellulose results in poor elasticity of materials, hindering their further applications. Furthermore, most cellulose-based porous materials use nanocellulose as basic materials, and require complicated production process. Therefore, exploiting highly elastic and low-cost cellulose-based porous materials by simple strategies remains a major challenge. Herein, a layered carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based material was innovatively prepared with excellent elasticity and underwater stability based on the synergistic effect of directional freezing and Fe 3+ /ethanol/H 2 O immersing. Specifically, directional freezing makes the homogeneous CMC solution become the skeletons of layered and porous materials. And the coordination between Fe 3+ and CMC endows the material with excellent elasticity and underwater stability. Crucially, ethanol/H 2 O plays a significant role in regulating the structure and properties of this material. The material can withstand 1000 cycles compression tests (94.35 % height retention at 40 %), and can maintain compressive resilience when submerged underwater for more than 72 h. Surprisingly, the dry porous materials after being immersed in water still have good compressive resilience. This method can provide a potential material for future applications in pressure sensing and wearable devices.

Biofunctional Cellulose Fibers from Mulberry Bast via Suberin Nanointerface Engineering

Wenxiang Zhai,Yijing Zhong,Wei Zhang,Zechun Ren,Tong Ji,Kejiao Ding,Song Chen,Xinli Wei,Liping Cai,Changlei Xia,Min Xu

The development of yarn-free cellulose fibers from natural biomass provides a low-energy and environmentally conscious alternative for producing functional textiles. This study introduced a method for producing yarn-free cellulose fibers from the bast of Broussonetia papyrifera (paper mulberry), a fast-growing plant that does not require pesticides. The fibers were extracted using a mild alkaline treatment that preserved their alignment and allowed them to be knitted directly without traditional spinning. A coating of suberin, obtained from cork bark waste ( Quercus variabilis ), was applied using ethanol dispersion and fixed by heating at 110  °C. The coating improved the fiber’s antibacterial performance, moisture response, and mechanical strength (tensile strength: 0.43 GPa; Young’s modulus: 6.4 GPa), while keeping the material flexible and washable. The suberin layer could be removed and reused through a recycling process involving ionic liquids, allowing over 95% recovery after multiple cycles. A life cycle assessment showed that this fiber system had a lower environmental impact compared to conventional synthetic textile fibers. Overall, this work provided a practical and recyclable approach to making functional textiles from natural plant materials.

Water-dispersible macromolecular antioxidants for toughening and strengthening cellulose membranes

Jie Wang,Wei Gao,Yu Jin,Wangmao Tian,Yutao Zhang,Chengcheng Hu,Baoxia Wang,Shuqi Dong,Liang Yuan

Biodegradable packaging materials from cellulose are eco-friendly alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics. Balancing its mechanical properties as well as protective values (antioxidation, oxygen barrier, etc.) is critical. However, most studies to improve its antioxidation performance were accompanied by sacrificed mechanical properties. In the current work, a series of linear -COOH functionalized phenolic polymers were prepared from phenolic compounds (vanillin, 3,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde) through a facile tri-component thiol-aldehyde polycondensation . While circumventing the cumbersome protection-deprotection of phenol groups, the one-pot strategy also affords water dispersible polymers for fabricating composites with cellulose nanofibers in an aqueous medium. After introducing 5–10 wt% of the copolymers , a minor soft phase was formed inside the composites, contributing to enhanced mechanical strength , toughness, antioxidation capability, and ultra-violet blocking performance, while its oxygen barrier property was well maintained.

Regenerated Cellulose Films Obtained via Ball Milling with Dry Ice

Jingyu Chen,Dingyi Duan,Sen Xue,Yongzheng Zhang,Kai Wu,Qiang Fu

Owing to the limited solubility of cellulose in conventional solvents, the development of efficient solvent systems to dissolve cellulose is necessary for its subsequent processing into value-added cellulose-based materials. In recent years, a green, low-cost, and sustainable CO2-based reversible solvent system (CO2/DMSO/DBU) has been developed. In this system, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) facilitates the swelling of cellulose, and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) provides a strong alkaline environment, enabling the derivatization of cellulose with CO2 to form cellulose carbonate, which is soluble in the solvent. Nevertheless, these systems have drawbacks, including high temperature (>50 °C) and inadequate mechanical properties of the regenerated cellulose films. In this study, ball milling was used to lower the dissolution temperature of cellulose and further improve the mechanical properties of regenerated cellulose films. To do this, dry ice as a source of CO2 and DMSO/DBU as mixed solvents, together with cellulose, were ball-milled at room temperature. A series of regenerated cellulose films were prepared at different dry ice contents and ball milling times. The results demonstrate that the cellulose can be readily dissolved within 0.5 h at room temperature, resulting in a stable cellulose solution (4.48 wt%), thanks to the mechanochemistry provided by ball milling. The prepared regenerated cellulose films exhibit satisfactory mechanical properties with a tensile strength of up to 77.3 MPa and a tensile strain of 8.6%, which are among the highest values reported for regenerated cellulose films. This work illustrates a simple, mild, and efficient method for green cellulose processing.

Strong and tough cellulose nanopapers enabled by imidazolium ionic liquids

Liu Yufan,Feng Shanshui,Zhang Zhenlin,Meng Qinghua,Shi Xinghua

The development of high-performance cellulose nanopaper is essential to enable its emerging application as an alternative eco-friendly substrate in electronics, photonics, and energy storage devices. Herein, we propose a novel chemical strategy to substantially improve the strength and toughness of cellulose nanopaper by introducing cations and anions from imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) into it, thereby forming additional hydrogen bonds between the hydroxy groups of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and the IL ions. At an IL content of 0.5 wt%, the strength, toughness, and fracture toughness of the IL/cellulose nanopapers are 210.5 MPa, 5.1 MJ/m 3 , and 4.48 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively, which are 2.5, 2.1, and 1.25 times greater than those of the unmodified nanopapers. Interfacial structure characterization and mechanistic analyses demonstrate that a moderate IL content facilitates the formation of extensive hydrogen bonds between the hydroxy groups on the CNF surface and both the imidazolium cations and anions. This substantially strengthens the interfacial bonding of the CNFs, effectively enhancing the tensile strength and toughness of the cellulose nanopaper while preserving its failure strain.

Arriving an ultralow wear using cellulose/two-dimensional material composites

Xuan Yin,Dingyao Zhang,Bing Zhang

The development of environmentally friendly solid lubricants with exceptional wear resistance is imperative to address the escalating environmental concerns and performance limitations of conventional lubricants in demanding tribological applications. This study systematically investigated the wear resistance of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/tungsten disulfide (WS2)/graphene composites under normal applied loads (2 and 4 N) and varying solid lubricant contents (stoichiometric ratios 0.2 referred to CWG-0.2 and 10 referred to CWG-10). Quantitative tribological tests revealed that the wear rate of HPMC composites exhibited distinct load dependence at fixed lubricant concentrations. Notably, CWG-0.2 and CWG-10 composites achieved an ultra-low wear rate below 10-10 mm3, representing an approximately 95% reduction compared to pristine HPMC (10-8 mm3). Surface characterization demonstrated that localized carbon phase clusters and interconnected carbon skeleton chains governed the ultra-low wear transition. Prolonged sliding (>10,000 cycles) induced the formation of a 10-50 nm-thick transfer film comprising WS2 nanoflakes and a hybrid amorphous phase (C-O-W-S), as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The exceptional performance, quantified through rigorous parametric analysis, positions HPMC composites as sustainable solid lubricants for precision machinery, aerospace bearings, and biodegradable micro-electromechanical systems requiring eco-friendly superlubricity lubricants.

Confined graphitization of cellulose polymorphs enables high-performance piezoresistive electronics

Zhijiang Li,Guozhuo Chen,Jingzhuo Guan,Chengling Huang,Zhiying Gao,Xiang Chen,Hou-Yong Yu,Yannan Liu

Cellulose, a renewable biopolymer, holds significant promise for sustainable electronics and sensing technologies, however, its intrinsic insulating nature hinders broader application. In this study, we present a regioselective, acid-induced confined graphitization strategy to convert four cellulose polymorphs (I–IV) into intrinsically conductive nanocellulose (CNCene) with high graphitization degrees, excellent electrical conductivity, outstanding thermal stability (up to 445.3 °C), and diverse nanostructured morphologies. Among them, CNCene-III was creatively utilized as a multifunctional nanofiller and incorporated into a cellulose matrix to construct a flexible piezoresistive device. Unlike conventional conductive fillers that often compromise flexibility, CNCene-III remarkably enhanced both the tensile strength (from 35.9 MPa to 82.1 MPa) and the elongation at break (from 7.7 % to 23.1 %) of the resulting cellulose composite film (CCF), owing to strong interfacial interactions. The CCF exhibited an ultrafast response time of 90 ms and a 23 % resistance change under low pressure, demonstrating high sensitivity and rapid signal feedback. This enabled real-time pressure sensing capability, as validated by reliable Morse code signal transmission. Compared with traditional cellulose-based conductive composites incorporating CNTs or graphene derivatives, this strategy offers a scalable, pyrolysis-free platform for engineering conductive nanocellulose with integrated mechanical reinforcement, electrical conductivity, and functional responsiveness.

Mechanism of bio-based halogen-free microcrystalline cellulose flame retardants

Yuan Quan,Li Chunxuan,Gao Dejun,Zhang Guimei,Li Kunhan,Yang Qiang,He Liping,Xu Shiwei

As a bio-based environmentally friendly material, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) can be applied to automotive trims instead of traditional plastics; However, its flammable properties limit the application scope. In this paper, a multi-component environmentally friendly and efficient halogen-free flame retardant (APMMCC) was prepared by amino silicone oil (ASO)/phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 )/melamine (MEL) co-modification. The synergistic modification not only made the surface morphology of microcrystalline cellulose smoother, but also introduced ASO molecules, phosphoric acid and melamine groups, which altered its chemical structure. Thermal degradation tests showed that the thermal stability and char-forming ability of APMMCC were greatly improved. Compared with MCC, APMMCC had stronger combustion-resistance under the flame and showed significant flame retardancy. When the addition content of MCC and MEL is 1:1, the heat release rate, total heat release rate, and smoke release rate of APMMCC were minimized in the current research range. Moreover, the residual char of APMMCC at different temperatures was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, and a condensed phase and gas phase synergistic flame retardant mechanism was proposed. Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Maleic Anhydride-Modified Cellulose Nanofibers

Jia-Ning Meng,Dan Qiu,Tao Yuan,Ya Li,Huang Huang,Ling-Hui Wang,Ya-Juan Wang,Rui Wang,Chang-Zi Jin

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are highly promising nanocarrier materials, boasting excellent drug adsorption and loading potential due to their tunable hydrophilic/lipophilic interfaces. This study is the first to report the successful synthesis of maleic anhydride-modified CNFs (MA-CNFs) via the esterification of CNFs using a solvent-free molten maleic anhydride (MA) system, and it systematically evaluates MACNFs’ dual adsorption performance for water-soluble and lipophilic drugs. A new characteristic peak at 1723 cm −1 in FT-IR confirms the formation of ester bonds, proving the successful grafting of MA onto CNFs. XRD analysis shows that the crystallinity slightly increases from 72.56% to 74.06%, indicating the reaction mainly occurs in the amorphous region. After modification, the material’s hydrophobicity is significantly enhanced (water contact angle: ~63.3° for CNFs vs. ~74.9° for MA-CNFs), and its BET specific surface area rises sharply from 5.03 to 26.29 m 2 /g. These structural advantages collectively enable MA-CNFs to have adsorption capacities for folic acid (FA, water-soluble) and vitamin E acetate (VEA, lipophilic) that are 1.15 and 2.04 times those of CNFs, respectively. The results demonstrate MA-CNFs are high-performance functional materials fabricated via a green method, with good biocompatibility.

Synthesis of Bulky Cellulose Derivatives for Efficient Enantioselective Fluorescent Sensing

Wang Weiqi,Wang Fan,Wang Yuqing,Zhang Lili,Okamoto Yoshio,Shen Jun

Four cellulose derivatives bearing benzothienyl or carbazolyl fluorophore pendants were successfully synthesized through carbamoylation followed by Steglich esterification or only esterification process, respectively. The enantioselective fluorescent sensing properties of the obtained derivatives were then evaluated using eight chiral substrates, including chiral aromatic amines and chiral amino alcohol-based drug intermediates. The four bulky host macromolecules exhibited good enantioselective fluorescence response to most of the tested guests with high enantioselectivity and sensitivity. Especially, a high enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio ( ef  = 37.16) was achieved on cellulose tris(2-benzothienylformate) ( Cel - 3 ) for the α-methylbenzylamine ( Q2 ), an important chiral agricultural drug intermediate. Worthy to be mentioned, an interesting opposite fluorescence response and a dual fluorescence enhancement pattern were also observed on the benzothienyl derivative Cel - 3 for the enantiomer pairs of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) ethylamine ( Q3 ) and phenylglycinol ( Q6 ), a critical intermediate for chiral drug as an antilipemic agent in high demand, respectively. It indicated that the bulky Cel - 3 possessed excellent enantioselective fluorescent sensing properties to the chiral aromatic amine and amino alcohols, revealing good potential as efficient chiral fluorescent sensors. It was speculated that a beneficial chiral domain may be constructed by the appropriate arrangement of bulky conjugated benzothienyl or carbazolyl pendants on the phenylcarbamates or esters surrounding the helical backbone of cellulose, which was crucial for the efficient chiral fluorescent sensing performance. The introduction of bulky fluorophore pendants on the cellulose phenylcarbamates or esters presents an efficient strategy to produce effective chiral fluorescent recognition materials. Recyclable cellulose nanocrystals xerogel with thermally insulating and radiative cooling

Yuheng Fan,Kai Feng,Pengwei Xie,Hui Tian,Yang Wu,Feng Zhou

Passive radiative cooling technology provides a sustainable method to minimize building's energy consumption and maintain indoor cooling by reflecting solar light and emitting heat to outer space. However, designing a radiative cooler that achieves high solar reflectance and mid-infrared emissivity while meeting the outdoor practical applications is still a challenge. Herein, we proposed a kind of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-based thermal insulating xerogel through cross-linking with poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), and followed by fluorinated treatment. The as-prepared xerogel exhibits a low thermal conductivity of 0.0671 W/mK, high solar reflectivity of ∼92.52 %, high mid-infrared emissivity of ∼94.45 %, as well as excellent self-cleaning properties. The coupling of excellent thermal insulation and radiative cooling endows the xerogel with superior thermal management properties, achieving a temperature drop of ∼13 °C at daytime, and meanwhile, its cooling performance can be maintained across various weather conditions. In addition, the applications of xerogel were extended to food and ice preservation. More importantly, the CNCs-based xerogel can be recycled in a straightforward manner or naturally degraded in outdoor environment, which ensured its sustainability. This study can help to a comprehensive understanding of the radiative cooling behavior of xerogels and guide to an approach to develop the high-performance green and sustainable radiative cooling porous material.
