At present, the development of nanoplatforms that integrate infection control, inflammation resolution, and tissue repair for the treatment of periodontitis remains an enormous challenge. Based on the intricate pathogenesis of periodontitis and the advantages of mild photothermal therapy (PTT) and nanotherapy, a multifunctional photothermal nanoplatform (designated BR@C3G-Cu) was rationally developed by coating bilirubin nanoparticles (BR NPs) with copper ion coordinated cyanidin-3-O-glucoside metal-polyphenol networks (MPNs) in this study. The synergistic consequences of the photothermal conversion properties and metal-dependent functionality of this MPNs contributed to the effective and persistent elimination of periodontal pathogens under safe and mild conditions, meeting the heterogeneous antibacterial requirements of periodontitis. Further, photothermal BR@C3G-Cu NPs restored the macrophage polarization balance and mitigated periodontal inflammation by countering oxidative stress damage and blocking the cGAS-STING pathway, thereby normalizing the periodontal local osteoimmune microenvironment and promoting the osteogenic differentiation of in situ stem cells. BR@C3G-Cu NPs exposed to near-infrared irradiation also offered beneficial therapeutic outcomes in a mouse periodontitis model, including inhibiting alveolar bone resorption and promoting periodontal tissue remodeling. Overall, this work highlights the potential of MPN-coated engineered NPs (i.e., BR@C3G-Cu) for the treatment of periodontitis through the integration of mild PTT and immunomodulatory therapy to eliminate pathogenic bacteria, alleviate inflammation, and promote regeneration.

Regulation of different metal ions on the properties, structure, self-assembly and encapsulating capabilities of soybean globulin (SG)-tannic acid (TA) conjugates were investigated. Through coordination interactions, metal ions promoted the supramolecular self-assembly of SG, resulting in the efficient encapsulation of β-carotene in its hydrophobic domains. Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ enhanced particle integrity by forming stable metal–polyphenol networks, while Al 3+ and Zn 2+ achieved the highest β-carotene encapsulation efficiency due to their appropriate capability to interact with SG/TA and lower destructive effect on β-carotene. In the presence of TA, Fe 3+ /Cu 2+ imparted strong pH stability to the carriers, Al 3+ /Mg 2+ /Zn 2+ preserved β-carotene under light/heat/oxygen conditions, and Al 3+ /Zn 2+ promoted superior antioxidant activity and β-carotene bioaccessibility during digestion. These findings demonstrate that metal ions with distinct coordination characteristics significantly influence the functionality of SG–TA conjugates, offering insights for the rational design of metal-induced protein–polyphenol delivery systems.

Whey protein isolate (WPI), as a common emulsifier, is sensitive to environment conditions, reducing the multilayer emulsion stability. The covalent binding between WPI and polyphenols is commonly used to improve the physicochemical properties of WPI, and further improve the performance of multilayer emulsions. However, minimal studies are available that systematically examine the effect of different polyphenol-WPI complexes on the performance of multilayer emulsions. This study used three common polyphenols (i.e. luteolin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and rutin) for covalent coupling to WPI. The degree of covalent coupling of WPI and polyphenols was determined, suggesting the degree of covalent binding was EGCG > luteolin > rutin. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the potential coupling sites of WPI-polyphenol complexes. Fluorescence spectrum and circular dichroism spectrum determined changes in WPI structures. Among three WPI-polyphenol complexes, the WPI-EGCG (WPI-E) complexes displayed the best physicochemical characteristics, including emulsification property, antioxidant property, and thermal property. Then, the WPI-polyphenols complexes were used to fabricate multilayer emulsions for caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) encapsulation. The WPI-E complexes stabilized multilayer emulsion demonstrated the highest stability on pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The WPI-luteolin (WPI-L) stabilized multilayer emulsion presented the highest encapsulation rate, while the non-covalent complex WPI stabilized multilayer emulsion demonstrated the highest release rate during simulated in vitro digestion. This study helped us to better understand the structure-function relationships associated with the fabrication of multilayer emulsions from polyphenols.

The increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastic packaging has driven interest in the development of biodegradable edible films with functional properties. In this work, edible blend films were developed based on fish gelatin (FG), soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS), and tea polyphenol (TP) for active food packaging applications. The FG/SSPS/TP films were prepared by solvent casting and characterized in terms of their structural, mechanical, optical, thermal, and barrier properties. FTIR, SEM, and XRD analyses revealed TP-induced morphological and structure changes in the biopolymer matrix. The incorporation of TP significantly enhanced the antioxidant activity and UV-shielding properties of the films, while also modifying their flexibility and surface hydrophilicity. The packaging performance of FG/SSPS/TP films was evaluated using beef tallow as a model food product. Compared to neat FG/SSPS and polyethylene films, the FG/SSPS/TP films effectively suppressed lipid oxidation of the samples during storage. The results demonstrated that the prepared FG/SSPS/TP films possess strong potential for use as edible and active packaging materials for food products.

Macroalgae are often used to produce sodium alginate, but their by-products have not been fully utilized. This study aimed to optimize the extraction of bound polyphenols (BPs) from Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) residues, analyze the composition of free polyphenols (FPs) and BPs, and evaluate their antioxidant activities and ability to inhibit glycosidase activity. The optimal conditions for extracting BPs achieved by the response surface method were as follows: 50 °C, a solid–liquid ratio of 1:50, an alkaline hydrolysis time of 2.38 h, and a NaOH concentration of 8 mol/L. Polyphenol content determination results indicated that FPs had significantly higher total polyphenols (13.02 ± 0.05 μg GAE/mg) and phlorotannin (3.44 ± 0.04 μg PE/mg) than BPs (6.57 ± 0.07 μg GAE/mg and 1.32 ± 0.20 μg PE/mg). HPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS showed distinct profiles: FPs had one polyhydroxy phenol, nine flavonoids, and four additional compounds, whereas BPs had five flavonoids and four other compounds. Antioxidant activity was found to be higher in FPs than in BPs (DPPH: 3.03 vs. 1.79 μg TE/mg; FRAP: 19.40 vs. 7.43 μg TE/mg). Furthermore, FPs exhibited 4.59- and 11-fold higher inhibition capacity toward α-amylase and α-glucosidase, respectively, compared to BPs. The results provide valuable basic data for the application of macroalgae residues in the marine biological industry and reveal their potential hypoglycemic ability.

High-performance hydrogel biomaterials hold considerable promise for advanced wound care. However, the suboptimal mechanical properties of conventional hydrogel materials limit their practical application. In this study, Hyaluronic acid sodium salt (HA), xanthan gum (XG), and N-acryloyl-glycinamide (NAGA) hydrogels with porous structures were successfully fabricated using in-situ extrusion 3D printing technology, and a functionalization strategy involving tea polyphenol (TP) immersion was proposed to enhance material properties through additional hydrogen bonding. Systematic optimization of TP concentration and immersion time led to significant improvements in the resulting hydrogel: tensile strain increased from 95 % to 266 %, tensile stress improved 6.8-fold, and compressive stress increased 10-fold, with an elastic modulus of 0.68 MPa and toughness of 1.2 MJ/m³ . Furthermore, TP-treated hydrogels exhibited excellent biocompatibility and strong antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity. This study provides a simple yet effective secondary functionalization approach for enhancing the performance of 3D-printed hydrogels, offering a promising approach for multifunctional hydrogel biomaterials with integrated mechanical strength and biocompatibility. These findings open new avenues for advanced wound care systems and personalized medicine applications.

Tailoring interfacial architectures in porous photothermal materials is critical for advancing solar-driven desalination technologies. Herein, we present a fully bio-based aerogel engineered through an iron-polyphenol coordination strategy inspired by the traditional Chinese “iron-tannin dyeing” method. Liquid-phase tannic acid (TA) extract and solid-phase cellulose from Chinese gallnut were co-assembled with sodium alginate, followed by Fe 3+ /Ca 2+ dual-ion crosslinking and freeze-drying, yielding a TA@SA@Fe 3+ aerogel with hierarchical porosity and adaptive interfacial characteristics. The tailored coordination network enhances light absorption (95.7 %), hydrophilicity, and a high solar evaporation rate of 2.0 kg·m –2 ·h –1 under 1 sun illumination. Its interconnected pores promote salt diffusion, ensuring long-term outdoor operation. Furthermore, the material exhibits strong adhesion on diverse substrates—including melamine sponges and geotextiles—supporting modular integration into scalable desalination systems. A comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) confirms the sustainability advantage of this system, with a total emission of only 2.4 kg CO 2 -equivalent per kilogram of material, significantly lower than conventional alternatives. This work offers a green, cost-effective, and application-ready strategy for designing interfacial aerogels, providing a promising platform for next-generation solar-thermal water purification technologies.

Nanofiltration (NF) membrane technology is pivotal in water purification, yet commercial membranes degrade over time, reaching end-of-life (EOL) status and requiring costly replacement, which contributes to environmental waste. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed for regenerating EOL NF membranes by constructing a stable ternary crosslinked network incorporating the adhesion characteristics of tannic acid (TA)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) self-assembled sticky particles and their metal coordination effect with Fe 3+ . The sticky particle adhesion and Fe 3+ crosslinking processes were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation (QCM-D) measurements, which revealed the formation process of TA-PVA-Fe ternary network. Compared to binary networks, the TA-PVA-Fe ternary network exhibited markedly reduced pore size (molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) = 399 Da, average diameter (d adv ) = 0.674 nm), resulting in enhanced monovalent/divalent salt separation performance (Cl - / SO 4 2 − separation factor of 54.5). The TA-PVA-Fe regenerated EOL NF membrane demonstrates robust Cl - / SO 4 2 − separation capability during extended-duration operation, maintaining Na 2 SO 4 rejection at 97.3 ± 0.7% and NaCl rejection at 29.6 ± 0.5%. Additionally, it exhibits superior antifouling properties, reducing flux decline by over 45% relative to TA-Fe membranes under organic foulant challenges. These findings underscore the potential of this eco-friendly approach for recycling EOL membranes and advancing sustainable water treatment technologies.

Gallic acid (GA), recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bioactivities, has demonstrated efficacy in ameliorating experimental colitis. However, its clinical translation is impeded by poor water solubility. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), as environmentally friendly green solvent systems, have emerged as promising candidates to address this limitation. Hydrogels are considered a viable strategy to enhance the anti-colitis efficacy of GA. The hydrogel (PC-CuGA) was fabricated using a one-step mixing method and cross-linked through non-covalent interactions by DES, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), GA, and Cu 2 + . Additionally, DSS-evoked colitis was established and applied to clarify the regulatory efficacy of PC-CuGA on intestinal barrier impairment, inflammatory response, and redox imbalance. Results revealed that PC-CuGA exhibited a robust gel state with excellent temporal stability, superior storage modulus, enhanced structural integrity, and favorable biosafety. In the colitis model, PC-CuGA intervention effectively mitigated DSS-induced pathology, as evidenced by reduced weight loss, attenuated colon shortening, and lowered disease activity index (DAI) scores. Histopathological analysis further demonstrated that PC-CuGA preserved intestinal barrier integrity and protected tight junction proteins. Mechanistically, PC-CuGA significantly dampened the activation of the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB axis and downregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes, while upregulating the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Collectively, these findings elucidate that the protective effects of PC-CuGA against experimental colitis associated with reinforcing intestinal barriers, suppressing oxidative stress, and excessive inflammation. This work provides a novel therapeutic strategy for the prevention and management of colitis, highlighting the potential of DES-based hydrogels in enhancing the bioavailability and efficacy of bioactive compounds.

Interactions between polyphenols and starch are critical for modulating starch functionality through structural reorganization. This study systematically compared the interaction of young apple polyphenols (YAP) with A-type (corn starch, CS), B-type (potato starch, POS), and C-type (pea starch, PES) under autoclaving. Multi-technique analysis confirmed the formation of starch-YAP complexes and structural reorganization into A+V- and B+V-type crystalline polymorphs. Distinct differences in complex properties were observed among the crystal types. CS-based complexes (CSY_4) demonstrated the highest loading capacity (785.61 ± 0.37 mg/g) and long-range crystallinity (9.35%), yet exhibited the lowest short-range order (0.885 ± 0.044); PES-based complexes (PESY_4) showed the highest encapsulation efficiency (97.40 ± 0.02%) alongside the lowest swelling power (1.63 ± 0.01 g/g) and solubility (0.36 ± 0.01 g/g); whereas POS-based complexes (POSY_4) presented the lowest amylose content (13.71 ± 0.17%). These structural modifications led to markedly suppressed digestibility, with resistant starch content increasing to 52.02 ± 2.41% (CSY_4), 56.55 ± 0.43% (POSY_4), and 57.19 ± 1.80% (PESY_4), and POS demonstrated the greatest efficacy in lowering the estimated glycemic index (eGI) (ΔeGI = 14.83). The study elucidates a crystal-type-dependent strategy for designing slow-digesting starch-based functional foods through polyphenol-mediated structural engineering.

This study provides a novel strategy for improving the interfacial properties of advanced thermoplastic composites. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials exhibit significant potential in enhancing the interfacial properties of composite materials due to their special structure and extremely high specific surface area. However, existing introduction methods relying on pre-acidification treatments can impair the mechanical properties of carbon fibers (CFs) and lead to issues such as uneven growth of MOFs. This paper utilizes resveratrol (RES) in reaction with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and bisphenol S (BPS) to construct a polyphenol cross-linked coating on the surface of CFs. The coating provides excellent heterogeneous nucleation sites for ZIF-67 without the need for pre-acidification, successfully enabling the loading of MOF on the fiber surface. Compared to unmodified composites, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength of CF@ZIF-67/ polyphthalazine ether sulfone ketone (PPESK) increased by 32.44% and 29.62%, respectively. The storage modulus reached 42 GPa, and the glass transition temperature rose to 298°C. Fracture morphology analysis further revealed that the failure mode shifted from interface debonding to resin cohesive failure, demonstrating a substantial enhancement in interfacial bonding.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto-immune disease characterized by inflammatory episodes and joint degradation. Activated macrophages produce large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, which damage chondrocytes and destroy the cartilage matrix. Therefore, a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of RA is to inhibit the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and ROS to promote macrophage polarization and facilitate cartilage repair. In this paper, an active targeting nanomedicine based on metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) is constructed to re-polarize activated macrophages for RA therapy. Sr 2+ and Cu 2+ are first coordinated with tannic acid (TA) to prepare TSC, and TNF-α siRNA is loaded into TSC via simple ultrasonic treatment to obtain TSSC. Finally, TSSC is coated with M1 macrophage membrane (termed as TSSC@M1) to enhance its inflammatory targeting ability. TSSC@M1 can actively target macrophages by releasing TA, Cu 2+ , and TNF-α siRNA to synergistically scavenge ROS and inhibit the expression of TNF-α to induce macrophage polarization, while Sr 2+ can further protect cartilage. In the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse model, TSSC@M1 can accumulate at inflamed joints and alleviate RA symptoms by modulating macrophage phenotype and repairing cartilage. Overall, TSSC@M1 NPs offer a promising and safe approach to treat RA.
