New insights into the role of powdered activated carbon in Mn(II) oxidation by ozone

Beiping Zhang,Haixiang Sun,Kun Wang,Dawen Zha,Yankun Liu,Yuchao Tang,Xianhuai Huang

Ozone–activated carbon (O 3 /AC) systems are widely applied for the removal of soluble manganese (Mn(II)) in drinking water treatment. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, the effects of granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) on Mn(II) removal by O 3 were investigated. Mn(II) was rapidly removed by O 3 alone ( k obs = 0.069 s −1 ), whereas lower rate constants of 0.048 and 0.031 s −1 were observed in the O 3 /GAC and O 3 /PAC systems, respectively, at pH 7.0. Although increasing pH enhanced Mn(II) oxidation by O 3 alone, the inhibitory effect of PAC became progressively stronger from pH 7 to 9. The inhibitory effects of GAC and PAC on Mn(II) removal were closely associated with enhanced O 3 consumption, as demonstrated by O 3 decay experiments. Although hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (O 2 •⁻ ) were generated in the O 3 /GAC and O 3 /PAC systems, radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that these species contributed negligibly to Mn(II) oxidation. Overall, GAC and PAC enhanced O 3 consumption and reduced Mn(II) removal. These findings provide new mechanistic insights into the role of AC (especially PAC) in O 3 oxidation for Mn(II) removal and contribute to a deeper understanding of combined O 3 /AC oxidation processes.

Spin-State Reconfiguration in Single Mn Sites Directs Selective Two-Electron O2 Reduction to H2O2

Ge Xiao,Wu Xinyi,Liu Xinya,Zheng Xiyang,Xu Jinze,Tian Li-jiao,Wang Wei,Wang Xiaozhi

Spin state strongly governs the pathway selectivity of photocatalytic oxygen reduction, dictating whether the reaction proceeds via the desired two electron (2e – ) route to H 2 O 2 or the competing four electron (4e – ) pathway. Herein, this work reports a ligand-field symmetry-breaking strategy that enables controlled spin state switching, thereby steering the oxygen reduction pathway toward selective two electron H 2 O 2 production. Specifically, symmetry breaking creates an asymmetric equatorial ligand field, triggering a deterministic spin state transition from intermediate spin to high spin on the Mn site. The resulting high-spin configuration features delocalized d-states and a downshifted d-band center, which collectively weaken *OOH adsorption to suppress premature O–O bond cleavage while preserving efficient O 2 activation through spin polarized electron transfer. As a result, the optimized high spin catalyst delivers an exceptional H 2 O 2 production rate of 5025 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 under simulated sunlight, representing a 2.3-fold enhancement over its intermediate spin (IS) counterpart. Furthermore, its activity is maintained under natural sunlight in ambient air, achieving a H 2 O 2 production rate of 2662 μmol·g –1 ·h –1 . This work establishes ligand field symmetry breaking as a precise and generalizable paradigm for spin state engineering in single atom catalysis, offering a direct route to overcome the selectivity efficiency compromise in photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 .

Ce–Mn Synergy in Zr-Stabilized Three-Dimensionally Ordered Macromesoporous Oxides for Superior Soot Combustion

Yuan Jiang,Xiong Jing,Ma Yaxiao,Quan Xiaolong,Wei Yuechang,Xu Linsheng,Li Yuanfeng,Liu Jian,Zhao Zhen

A series of three-dimensionally ordered macromesoporous (3DOMM) Ce x Mn 0.3-x Zr 0.7 O δ catalysts were synthesized by an evaporation-induced self-assembly combined with a colloidal crystal template (EISA-CCT) method. These catalysts exhibit excellent soot combustion activity and possess an intact 3DOMM structure. The electronic synergy between Mn and Ce was investigated. Mn facilitates the reduction of Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ and the generation of oxygen vacancies, thereby increasing active oxygen species, while Ce oxidizes Mn 2+ to Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , which enhances the intrinsic redox ability and NO oxidation. Among the tested samples, the Ce 0.15 Mn 0.15 Zr 0.7 O δ catalyst exhibits activity comparable to that of noble-metal catalysts and excellent stability, which can be attributed to the maximized Ce–Mn synergy and the intact 3DOMM morphology.

Enhancement of Electron Transfer Between Fe/Mn Promotes Efficient Activation of Peroxomonosulfate by FeMn-NBC

Xiaoni Lin,Qiang Ge,Xianbo Zhou,Yan Wang,Congyun Zhu,Kuanyong Liu,Jinquan Wan

Bimetallic catalysts can effectively enhance the catalytic degradation efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which is usually attributed to the enhancement of electron transfer, but currently, there is no clear explanation of the mechanism of how the electron transfer is enhanced. A nitrogen-doped Fe/Mn composite biochar (FeMn-NBC) was co-constructed by hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature calcination. The FeMn-NBC activated PMS more efficiently than the monometallic one due to the enhanced electron transfer between Fe and Mn. The FeMn-NBC/PMS system activated PMS with Mn as the active center, and the high oxidation state of Mn4+promoted the acceleration of the PMS adsorption of the generation of Mn2+/Mn3+. This gaining effect accelerated the electron cycling between Fe2+/Fe3+and Mn2+/Mn3+/Mn4+, which enhanced the PMS catalysis to generate free radicals (•OH, SO4•−and •O2−) and non-radicals (1O2) for the efficient degradation of diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). Benefiting from this gaining effect, the degradation rate of DIBP by the FeMn-NBC/PMS system was increased by 2.43 and 3.38 times compared to Fe-NBC and Mn-NBC. The bimetallic-enhanced electron transfer mechanism proposed in this study facilitated the development of efficient catalysts for more efficient and selective removal of organic pollutants.

Tailoring of transition metal Mn-Ni doped acid-modified activated carbon for efficient SO2 removal

Liu Xiaoli,Xu Mengjin,Guo Jiaxiu,Li Jianjun

The desulfurization performance for Mn-Ni supported on activated carbons (Mn-Ni/NAC) calcined at different temperatures varies considerably. The physicochemical properties of Mn-Ni/NAC have been investigated by a series of characterization studies. The moderate calcination temperature contributed to a larger surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups (C = O), thus provided more anchoring sites for the dispersion of Mn 2+ and Ni 0 species. The optimal Mn-Ni/NAC-700 exhibited superior desulfurization performance, achieving breakthrough sulfur capacity and breakthrough time of 287 mg/g and 531 min, respectively. The nucleophilic C = O groups served as active sites for chemically absorbing SO 2 . Ni 0 could serve as an oxygen activator, and promote the transfer of oxygen molecules to oxidize SO 2 . During the desulfurization, SO 2 adsorbed on the C = O groups gradually mainly converted into sulfate (SO 4 2− ). This conversion process was closely linked to the decrease of surface C = O groups and the formation of C–O groups. As the reaction proceeds, reaction products (SO 4 2+ ) begin to accumulate, blocking the pore channels of the catalyst and generating MnSO 4 , resulting in catalyst deactivation. This work will guide the design of high-performance activated carbon-based adsorbents suitable for practical applications.

Sm and Mn doped enhancing the electrical properties of .68PMN–.32PT relaxor ferroelectric thin films

Liang Chen,Changxing Zhao,Peng Jiang,Shuhong Xie,Kai Pan

(1− x )Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 – x PbTiO 3 (PMN–PT) has attracted attention due to its excellent electrical properties as a typical relaxor ferroelectric material. High-quality Mn–Sm co-doped 0.68PMN–0.32PT thin films were synthesized on the Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates by sol–gel based on spin coating method. The results show that 1 mol% Mn–2 mol% Sm co-doped PMN–PT thin films have high dielectric constant ( ε r ∼ 1895) and relatively low dielectric loss (tan δ ∼ .039) at 1 kHz. They also show superior ferroelectric polarization ( P max ∼ 53.71 μC/cm 2 , P r ∼ 30.85 μC/cm 2 ) and high dielectric breakdown strength (∼1656.6 kV/cm), which are primarily due to the low leakage current density (∼10 −7 A/cm 2 ). This work suggests a practical approach to enhance the dielectricity, piezoelectricity, and ferroelectricity of PMN–PT thin films.

Investigation of the hydrothermal aging of an Mn-based mullite SmMn2O5 catalyst of NO oxidation

Lina Xue,Ka Xiong,Haijun Chen,Kyeongjae Cho,Weichao Wang

Hydrothermal aging tests are important to carry out when evaluating the hydrothermal durability of heterogeneous catalysts in vehicle exhaust emission. Here, we explored the effect of aging on an efficient Mn-based mullite catalyst (SmMn2O5) of NO oxidation. The mullite catalyst was prepared via the hydrothermal method and was subsequently aged in air with a 10% H2O stream at 750 °C for 16 hours. The fresh and aged catalysts were structurally characterized using Powder X-ray diffraction(XRD), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), high resolution-transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). For the performance evaluations, the samples were placed into a U-shape reactor furnace, and NO and NO2 concentrations were in situ recorded with an NOx analyzer. In contrast to fresh mullite, the aged sample showed a 25 °C higher light-off temperature and 11% conversion loss at its maximum conversion temperature of 300 °C. O2-TPD of the aged sample displayed a large decrease of the desorption area, consistent with an ∼3-fold loss of the BET specific surface area. Moreover, HRTEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy results together indicated that a small portion of the mullite decomposed into perovskite SmMnO3 and Mn2O3, which further reduced the total quantity of Mn active sites. The reduction of the BET surface area and mullite decomposition together caused the decrease of the catalytic performance. We therefore expect maintaining the specific surface area to be important for preventing the loss of catalytic performance during the hydrothermal aging process.

Improved Reversible Zinc Storage Achieved in a Constitutionally Crystalline-Stable Mn(VO3)2 Nanobelts Cathode

Jiaqi Ke,Yufei Zhang,Yibo Zhang,Minghui Ye,Zicheng Zhang,Yongchao Tang,Xiaoqing Liu,Cheng Chao Li

Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are potential for grid-scale applications owing to their safety, low price, and available sources. The development of ZIBs cathode with high specific capacity, wide operating voltage window and stable cyclability is urgently needed in next-generation commercial batteries. Herein, we report a structurally crystalline-stable Mn(VO 3 ) 2 nanobelts cathode for ZIBs prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized Mn(VO 3 ) 2 exhibited high specific capacity of 350 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , and maintained a capacity retention of 92 % after 10,000 cycles at 2 A g −1 . It also showed good rate performance and obtained a reversible capacity of up to 200 mAh g −1 after 600 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 under −20 °C. The electrochemical tests suggest that Mn(VO 3 ) 2 nanobelts impart fast Zn 2+ ions migration, and the introduction of manganese atoms help make the structures more indestructible, leading to a good rate performance and prolonged cycle lifespan. Graphical The crystalline-stable Mn(VO 3 ) 2 nanobelts cathode presents the specific capacity of 350 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and maintain a capacity retention rate of 92 % for 10,000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g −1 . It also rendered good rate performance and obtained a reversible capacity of up to 200 mAh g −1 after 600 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 even under −20 °C. Benefiting from the unique tunnel type nanobelts structure, the Mn(VO 3 ) 2 nanobelts show high Zn 2+ migration kinetics and stable framework for reversible ions de-/insertion.

Enhancing the spectral selectivity of MgTiO3 via Mn doping for high temperature solar thermal conversion

Ziqin Lin,Tianxia Xie,Zhuolin Xie,Anqi Dai,Yang Yuan,Peng Sun,Yanqi Song,Zhenggang Fang,Chunhua Lu

Solar absorbers are vital for concentrated solar power (CSP) systems, yet spectral selectivity solar absorbers (SSAs) struggle with high-temperature stability in air. This study introduced Mn ions into MgTiO 3 (MTO) via a high temperature solid-phase synthesis technique to optimize the spectral selectivity. Unlike conventional doping that increased both absorptance and emittance, MgTi 0.4 Mn 0.6 O 3 (MTMO-0.6) boosted solar absorptance (α = 0.85) while maintaining low emittance (ε = 0.39, 1073.15 K) in the 2.5–15 μm wavelength range. Besides, the material retained high spectral selectivity (α/ε = 0.84/0.41) after heat treatment at 800 °C in air atmosphere for 90 h in total (9 h cycles −1 , 10 cycles), showing excellent thermal stability. Moreover, under concentrated solar irradiation of 10.83 W·cm −2 , MTMO-0.6 sample reached an equilibrium temperature of 848 ℃, surpassing that of MTO and SiC. The proposed Mn-doped MgTiO 3 has the potential as a solar absorber for high temperature solar thermal conversion.

Nacre-Mimetic Structural Physical Encapsulation and Co-Mn Bimetallic Interaction for Stabilizing Cobalt Active Sites

Yuhuan Lin,Linlin Su,Wei Hu,Ziyan Niu,Min Xu,Li Dai,Yutao Gao,Gang Yang,Lulu Long

The persistent challenge of antibiotic contamination in water necessitates efficient catalytic systems for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes. While cobalt-based catalysts derived from ZIF-67 metal-organic frameworks and conventional core-shell structures like SiO 2 coatings offered limited physical encapsulation, they failed to prevent intra-particle agglomeration and adequately suppress Co ions leaching. Drawing inspiration from the dual-shell defense mechanism of the nacre structure, which combined physical and chemical mechanisms, this study constructed a Co 3 O 4 /C@MnSiO 3 (CCMS) nacre-mimetic nanostructured catalyst by converting the mesoporous SiO 2 on the surface of ZIF-67 into MnSiO 3 . The unique architecture effectively suppressed nanoparticle aggregation within individual ZIF-67 through physical encapsulation and bimetallic interaction, dispersed the active sites, reduced Co 2+ leaching, and enhanced catalytic activity. Compared to Co 3 O 4 /C (CC) and Co 3 O 4 /C@SiO 2 (CCS), the CCMS/PMS system significantly improved tetracycline degradation (1.4 and 2.3 times higher kinetic constants) and maintained 75% removal efficiency after five cycles. This study constructed a nacre-mimetic structure achieving highly efficient and stable catalysis, meanwhile providing novel strategies for optimizing MOF-based catalytic materials.

Catalytic ozonation of bisphenol A in aqueous solution using Mn-Ce/HZSM-5 as catalyst

Liu Yanfang,Zhao Junna,Li Zaixing,Li Guixia,Li Wei,Gao Xiang

Mixed manganese and cerium oxide supported on HZSM-5 were synthesized and used as heterogeneous catalysts for ozonation of bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution. The prepared catalysts of Mn-Ce/HZSM-5 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that Mn-Ce/HZSM-5 exhibits extraordinary catalytic activity for the degradation of BPA. Removal of 89.3% of BPA and 90.4% of total organic carbon (TOC) was achieved in 30 min, compared to non-catalytic ozonation, where only 50.5% BPA and 28.1% TOC removal were reached under the same conditions. Adsorption of BPA on HZSM-5 support and Mn-Ce/HZSM-5 catalysts was negligible. The strong inhibition of BPA removal by tert-butyl alcohol indicated that the attack of hydroxyl radicals was responsible for the improvement of catalytic ozonation. It was observed that at neutral pH, which is near the point of zero charge of the catalyst, the catalytic activity reached its maximum. Increasing the amount of Mn-Ce/HZSM-5 catalyst until it exceeded 3 g/L did not show a strong effect on BPA removal. The catalysts showed high stability and reusability.
