Doxycycline hydrochloride (DH), a persistent antibiotic frequently detected in aquatic environments, remains challenging to eliminate because conventional photocatalysts often suffer from limited visible-light utilization and rapid charge recombination, which suppress reactive oxygen species generation and slow DH transformation. Herein, we develop a visible-light-responsive BaTiO3–In2S3 photocatalyst by constructing an S-scheme heterojunction that steers oxygen-mediated electron transfer for accelerated photocatalytic degradation of DH. Ferroelectric BaTiO3 provides a polarization-associated driving force for carrier separation, whereas In2S3 broadens light harvesting and supplies reductive electrons for oxygen activation. Their work-function mismatch establishes an interfacial electric field that promotes directional carrier migration and suppresses interfacial charge recombination, as evidenced by ex situ/in situ XPS analysis and further supported by DFT analysis. As a result, the BaTiO3–In2S3 heterojunction delivers 59.1% DH conversion with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.02606 min–1, 2.15 times higher than pristine BaTiO3. Quenching and EPR experiments identify ·O2– and h+ as the dominant reactive species, consistent with an S-scheme charge-transfer pathway that preserves high-energy electrons in In2S3 and oxidative holes in BaTiO3. LC-MS analysis suggests three feasible degradation routes, and ECOSAR prediction indicates an overall reduction in aquatic toxicity for several low-molecular-weight intermediates.

The microstructure engineering of BaTiO 3 -based ceramic systems serves as an essential prerequisite to attain superior dielectric stability and reliability in modern multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). In this study, the effects of Ca doping on phase composition, microstructure, defect evolution, and dielectric temperature stability were systematically investigated in a novel BaTiO 3 -1 at%CeO 2 -3 at%MgO- x at%CaCO 3 ( x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) ceramic system. The results show that Ca doping promotes the tetragonality of the structure to increase first and then decrease. The addition of Ca 2+ changed the original defect composition of the ceramics: Ca 2+ promotes the conversion of Ce 3+ to Ce 4+ , reduces the reduction of Ti 4+ , and regulates the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The addition of Ca 2+ reduces the grain boundary activation energy ( 1.86 eV to 1.33 eV ), and reduces the carrier concentration to improve the ceramic resistivity. Ca 2+ promotes the enrichment of doped ions at the grain boundary to form a ' core-shell ' structure, which is characterized by broadened and suppressed dielectric peaks. When x = 6 at %, the ceramics meet the X8R specification (|( C T - C 25°C )/ C 25°C ×100%| ≤ 15%, T ∈ [-55°C, 150°C]), the dielectric constant at room temperature is 2802, and the dielectric loss is less than 0.02. This study reveals the Ca 2+ induced multi-ion synergistic regulation mechanism, which provides an experimental basis for the development of high stability and low loss lead-free MLCC dielectric materials that meet the X8R standard.

Nanocatalysts
hold broad application prospects for photocatalytic
hydrogen evolution. CdS is a visible-light-responsive photocatalyst
for hydrogen evolution, but its efficiency is limited by fast electron–hole
recombination and insufficient interfacial charge extraction at the
nanoscale. Here, a nanoscale type-II BaTiO 3 /CdS (BTO/CdS)
heterojunction was constructed through a chemical bath deposition
process to introduce a built-in electric field (BIEF) at the oxide/sulfide
interface. The Fermi-level mismatch between BTO and CdS nanostructures
induces interfacial charge redistribution, forming a BIEF directed
from BTO to CdS. Under light irradiation, this field drives photogenerated
electrons from CdS toward BTO, thereby suppressing charge recombination
and improving electron utilization for hydrogen evolution. The optimized
BTO/CdS composite delivers a hydrogen evolution rate of 5.23 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 under simulated sunlight,
which is 5.5 and 40.2 times higher than those of pure CdS (0.95 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 ) and BTO (0.13 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 ), respectively. X-ray
photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy
(UPS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and Kelvin probe
force microscopy (KPFM) consistently support the BIEF-directed charge
transfer pathway. This study clarifies how interfacial electric-field
engineering in BTO/CdS nanostructures promotes directional electron
extraction and improves CdS-based photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Mn-doped BaTiO 3 with modulated band structure and carrier dynamics. • Synergistic SDT/CDT achieved via Mn-doping and piezoelectric catalysis. • US accelerates Fenton-like reactions for improved CDT efficacy. Piezoelectric-based sonodynamic therapy (SDT) under ultrasound (US) excitation has garnered increasing attention in cancer treatment. Barium titanate (BTO) is a typical piezoelectric material with the advantage of good biocompatibility. However, the hypoxic microenvironment of tumors limits the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of piezoelectric materials. In this study, BTO/Mn/PDA/Trop-2 was prepared via hydrothermal and self-layered assembly methods for the treatment of bladder cancer. The BTO generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the piezoelectric effect under US irradiation. The bandgap of BTO was reduced by Mn doping, which accelerated electron movement and enhanced the piezoelectric effect of BTO to strengthen SDT. Additionally, Mn exhibited Fenton reaction activity, converting endogenous hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals, and US enhanced CDT by promoting Mn release. The enhanced SDT and CDT of BTO/Mn/PDA/Trop-2 demonstrate inhibitory effects on bladder cancer both in vitro and in vivo . This work achieved bladder cancer treatment by simultaneously enhancing the SDT and CDT of piezoelectric materials. Download: Download high-res image (103KB) Download: Download full-size image

To meet the requirements of next-generation base metal electrode multilayer ceramic capacitors (BME-MLCCs) for low cost, high integration, and high stability, this work investigates the regulatory effects of rare-earth Lu 3+ doping on the microstructure, reduction resistance, and dielectric properties of BaTiO 3 -based ceramics sintered under a reducing atmosphere. A series of BaTiO 3 - x Lu ( x = 0, 2, 3, 4) ceramics were prepared via the conventional solid-state route and sintered in a reducing atmosphere (0.5% H 2 /N 2 ). The results demonstrate two distinct roles of Lu 3+ doping. First, Lu 3+ incorporation at the B-site (substituting for Ti 4+ ) introduces lattice microstrain, which stabilizes the pseudocubic phase. Second, the enrichment of Lu 3+ at grain boundaries induces a solute-drag effect that kinetically suppresses grain-boundary migration, thereby confining the average grain size to 100-150 nm. The coupled effects of the cubic phase and nanoscale grains contribute to performance enhancement in three key aspects: first, the increased energy barrier for charge-carrier migration and the space-charge layer at grain boundaries effectively suppress oxygen vacancy and electronic conduction, leading to a high resistivity on the order of 10 11 Ω·cm under reducing conditions; second, the nanoscale pseudocubic grains exhibit relaxor-like behavior, which broadens the permittivity peak and enables compliance with the X7R temperature stability specification (for x =3, ε r = 1535, tanδ = 0.0079 at room temperature); finally, the nanograins promote the formation of polar nanoregions, substantially improving DC-bias stability (with a permittivity variation of only 3.87% under 0-2 V/μm). This study elucidates the mechanism by which Lu 3+ , through grain boundary segregation, synergistically refines grains, stabilizes the cubic phase, and optimizes electrical performance, offering an effective material strategy for developing fine-grained cubic-phase BaTiO 3 dielectrics for high-performance BME-MLCCs.

Abstract Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) have attracted considerable attention for wearable and self-powered biomedical electronics due to their flexibility, biocompatibility, and favorable triboelectric properties. However, their relatively limited electrical output still hinders practical applications. Herein, a synergistic strategy integrating hierarchically porous structure engineering and barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO) nanoparticle (NP) incorporation was developed to enhance the triboelectric performance of PVDF nanofiber membranes. In particular, the hierarchical porous structure increases surface roughness and effective contact area, thereby promoting interfacial charge generation. BTO NPs compensate for the reduction in effective dielectric permittivity associated with the porous structure. The synergistic effect of these two factors achieved a short-circuit current of 0.863 ± 0.027 μA, a transferred charge density of 25.99 ± 0.62 μC m−2, and a power density of 650 mW m−2. The output voltage increased to 64.44 ± 0.83 V, corresponding to a 204.8% enhancement compared with the pristine device. Finally, the device was attached to the elbow joint, the contact area of the arm, and the sole of a shoe to verify its ability to monitor human motion signals and power electronic devices. The results demonstrated that the sensors can effectively distinguish between different motion states and can power small electronic devices for harvesting mechanical energy. Overall, this study developed a simple yet highly efficient strategy for enhancing the electrical output capacity of PVDF-TENG and holds promising potential for practical applications in human physiological signal monitoring and self-powering wearable devices.

Incorporating high-permittivity ceramic nanofillers is an effective strategy to enhance the dielectric constant via interfacial polarisation, thereby boosting the electromechanical sensitivity of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). However, filler agglomeration due to surface energy mismatch deteriorates material properties and weakens actuation capabilities. To address this challenge, we propose a ‘flexible interfacial anchoring’ strategy distinct from conventional rigid modification. KR38S coupling agents are covalently anchored onto BaTiO 3 nanoparticles via condensation reaction. Unlike hyperbranched modification requiring a thick polymer coating and topological interlocking, the long dioctyl chains of KR38S achieve a dual function: hydrophobic alkyl segments form an isolation layer that mitigates interfacial voids and charge traps, while flexible chains entangle with TPU polyether soft segments, creating a compliant cushion layer dynamically interconnected with the matrix. Benefiting from improved dispersibility and compatibility, the dielectric properties of the composites were substantially enhanced. The breakdown strength increased from 154.5 kV/mm for pristine TPU to 213.2 kV/mm for 5 wt% mBT/TPU, and the 10 wt% composite achieved an actuation displacement of 3.03 mm at 46.2 kV/mm, compared to 0.69 mm for pristine TPU at 29.2 kV/mm. This study provides a facile route to high-performance DEAs for soft robotics, flexible electronics, and intelligent wearables.

Bioelectroactive bone implant materials that closely resemble the characteristics of natural bone can be developed by combining hydroxyapatite (HA) with barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ). The significant disparity in sintering temperatures between BaTiO 3 and HA precludes their co-sintering to achieve optimal mechanical properties. Furthermore, the dispersed distribution of BaTiO 3 within HA inhibits the formation of a continuous piezoelectric pathway, leading to suboptimal piezoelectric performance. In this work, porous BaTiO 3 scaffolds featuring orderly through-pore structures were fabricated utilizing a combination of multi-cold source freeze-casting and sintering. Subsequently, calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC) was infiltrated into the scaffold pores under pressure. HA/BaTiO 3 bioactive piezoelectric composites were obtained through hydration reaction, eliminating the need for sintering. The axial compressive strength and radial fracture load of the fabricated composite reached 16.25 MPa and 701.53 N, respectively. When the BaTiO 3 content was 46 vol%, the piezoelectric constant d 33 of the composite was 14 pC N −1 , improving the composite's mechanical load responsiveness and surface charge generation. The negatively charged surface of the polarized composite promotes Ca 2+ deposition and stimulates osteoblast proliferation, thus accelerating bone-like apatite formation and enhancing osteoblast growth. The negative surface charge of BaTiO 3 facilitates osteoblast adhesion and induces pseudopodium extension along or attachment to the BaTiO 3 layers, thus promoting their preferred orientation and alignment. This mechanism provides key insights for designing bone repair materials that mimic the microstructure of oriented bone tissue in Haversian systems.

To address the demand for high-performance automotive electronics, this study develops Er 3+ -modified BaTiO 3 -based ceramics with a higher upper operating temperature (>125 °C), fine-grain, and anti-reduction properties for base metal electrode (BME) multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) utilizing a chemical coating process. The addition of Er 3+ inhibits grain growth, promotes phase transition and hinders oxygen vacancy migration, significantly enhancing the temperature stability and insulation resistivity under a reducing atmosphere. At an optimal coated level of 0.03 mol, the ceramic achieves a fine-grain (195 nm) microstructure and meets the EIA X8R specifications (−55 °C to 150 °C, ΔC/C 25°C ≤ ±15%). The material demonstrates excellent properties, including a high dielectric constant (ε r ∼ 1705), low dielectric loss (tanδ ∼ 0.0054), and competitive insulation resistivity (ρ v ∼ 3.37 × 10 12 Ω cm). These findings provide theoretical guidance for developing temperature-stable BME MLCCs with a single-layer thickness of only 1 μm or even less.

Flexible piezoelectric sensors offer excellent wearability and easy integration, making them attractive for smart devices and health monitoring. However, their low piezoelectric coefficient (d33) limits widespread use. In this study, surface-coated barium titanate nanoparticles (mBT) with a core–shell structure were synthesized and incorporated into P(VDF-TrFE) to form composite films. The film containing 10 wt % mBT showed a dielectric constant of 20 at 103 Hz, a 31% increase in residual polarization (7.82 μC·cm–2), a 30% reduction in coercive field (40 MV/m), and a 58% enhancement in quasi-static d33 (41 pC/N) compared with the pure polymer. These improvements arise from enhanced interfacial interactions and phase compatibility due to the mBT core–shell design, which promotes β-phase formation in the polymer matrix. A flexible sensor fabricated from the optimized composite displayed superior pressure sensitivity and linearity (R2 > 0.999). Its dynamic d33 and voltage coefficient (g33) reached 42 pC/N and 244 mV·m/N, improving by 66% and 35%, respectively. The sensor accurately detected low-frequency vibrations (0.5–50 Hz), highlighting the potential of core–shell nanoparticle modification for developing high-sensitivity, low-frequency flexible piezoelectric sensors.

High dielectric constant ( ε r ) inorganic nanoparticles reinforced dielectric polymer nanocomposites have been intensively investigated for energy storage applications in current electrical and electronic systems. Although the incorporation of high- ε r inorganic nanoparticles can improve the ε r of the composites to a certain extent, it will also greatly reduce the overall breakdown strength ( E b ) of the materials, which ultimately hinders the effective improvement of the energy storage density of the composites. In this paper, an approach is developed to modify high- ε r BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanoparticles with polyimide (PI) polymer shells (PI@BTO) through an in-situ polymerization process in the polyetherimide (PEI)-based nanocomposites. The constructed PI shell improves the compatibility of the inorganic/organic interface, resulting in a uniform dispersion of nanoparticles in the PEI matrix. In particular, the spontaneous electrostatic interaction between polymer chains in the PI shell and PEI matrix enables an increased E b of the PEI/PI@BTO nanocomposite over the pure PEI, which leads to a high energy storage density ( U e ) of 6.2 J/cm 3 and a high charge-discharge efficiency (η) above 80% in the PEI nanocomposites, with an enhancement of 150% over pure PEI. In this paper, a convenient and efficient interfacial modification technique is provided for the development of flexible high energy storage density polymer/inorganic nanoparticle composites for dielectric and energy storage applications.

Piezocatalysis is regarded as a fascinating technology for water remediation and possible disease treatment. A high piezoelectric coefficient (d33) is one of the most important parameters to determine piezocatalytic performance, which can be manipulated via phase boundary design. Herein, a novel strategy for excellent piezocatalytic activity in lead-free BaTiO3-based materials via manipulating the multiphase coexistence is proposed. The piezocatalyst of 0.82Ba(Ti0.89Sn0.11)O3-0.18(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (0.82BTS-0.18BCT) with multiphase coexistence is prepared, and a large d33 can be obtained. As a result, 0.82BTS-0.18BCT exhibits excellent piezocatalytic performance for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Furthermore, the removal rate of RhB could reach more than 90% after vibration for 30 min, and the reaction rate constant (k) could reach 0.0706 min–1, which is much superior to that of most other representative perovskite-structured piezoelectric materials. Excellent piezocatalytic performance can be attributed to the strong local ferro-/piezoelectric response induced by the multiphase coexistence, as confirmed by the in situ piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Finally, the piezocatalytic degradation mechanism is analyzed systemically and proposed. This work not only provides a high-efficiency piezocatalyst but also sheds light on developing efficient BT-based piezocatalysts by manipulating the multiphase coexistence.
