A series of Bi-doped gadolinium iron garnet (Bi:GdIG) infrared-transparent ceramics were fabricated by a hot-press sintering process. The effects of Bi doping on the phase structure, microstructure and optical transmittance of GdIG ceramics were analyzed systematically. The grain size of Bi x Gd 3- x Fe 5 O 12 ( x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9) ceramic samples gradually decreased with the increase of Bi doping, and their optical transmittance gradually decreased, reaching about 70.7%, 62.9%, 56.9%, and 29.8% at 1550 nm, respectively. Meanwhile, the effects of Bi doping on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties of GdIG ceramics were investigated systematically. The saturation specific Faraday rotation angles ( θ F ) of the Bi x Gd 3- x Fe 5 O 12 ceramic samples reached about 51, −266, −595, and −968 deg./cm, respectively, which increased linearly with the increase of the Bi doping amount. The θ F increased by about 34 deg./cm for each 1 at% increase in the Bi doping amount, achieving comparable magneto-optical properties with Bi:GdIG single crystals produced by liquid phase epitaxy. It shows the bright prospects of Bi:GdIG ceramic materials in the field of magneto-optical applications.

van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWHs) have emerged as a promising strategy to improve the optoelectronic properties of materials for use in optoelectronic devices. In this study, independent tellurium nanotube (Te NT) structures with diameters of approximately 80 ± 10 nm were first synthesized. Subsequently, zero-dimensional (0D) bismuth quantum dots (Bi QDs) were uniformly deposited on the surface of one-dimensional (1D) Te NTs via a hydrothermal bottom-up assembly process, successfully constructing a mixed-dimensional Bi/Te van der Waals heterojunction (vdWH) with Bi QDs densely distributed around the Te NTs. The nonlinear optical properties of the heterojunction were systematically investigated. Due to the built-in electric field at the tellurium/bismuth interface, these vdWHs show significantly enhanced nonlinear absorption, lower saturation intensity, and improved carrier transport. These properties make Bi/Te vdWHs promising candidates for advanced optical applications. Furthermore, stable ultrashort pulses and bound-state solitons at a 1.5 μm wavelength were generated by incorporating Bi/Te vdWHs as saturable absorbers within an erbium-doped fiber laser cavity. Such findings highlight the potential of Bi/Te vdWHs as a versatile platform for developing high-performance optical devices with enhanced optoelectronic and nonlinear optical properties.

Core-shell photonic microcapsules (PhMCs) have the advantage of rich structural color compared with homogeneous photonic crystal microspheres, and thus have higher application value. How to prepare structurally color controllable PhMCs with responsive functions is increasingly urgent, which is related to the possibility of further expanding their applications. In this report, we integrate microfluidic and controlled etching techniques to conveniently prepare structurally color controllable responsive PhMCs and successfully apply them in the fields of metal ion detection and optical anti-counterfeiting. Microfluidics endows PhMCs with controllable and homogeneous dimensions. Meanwhile, controlled etching gives PhMCs shells a controllable ratio of opal/inverse-opal structures. The fully-etched PhMCs were designed as metal ion detectors to identify the existence of metal ions in the solution through the change of structural color. Notably, the partially etched PhMCs have three structural colors of red/green/yellow, which is the first time that triple stop band gaps PhMCs have been prepared based on two materials. The triple information has been switched by adjusting the transmission/reflection modes and the temperature to explore the function of an optical anti-counterfeiting model. Our study provides a new path for the construction of functionalized PhMCs, and further expands its potential application value.

Bi-doped glasses and fibers have been widely applied in solid-state and fiber lasers. However, the mechanism underlying near-infrared (NIR) luminescence remains unclear, and Bi-related luminescence centers (BLCs) are prone to alteration during fiber fabrication, making it challenging to achieve high-performance Bi-doped glass fibers. In this work, Bi-, Bi-Al-, and Bi-Ge-doped silica glasses were investigated to elucidate the origin of NIR luminescence. Two broad NIR fluorescence bands were observed in silica glasses, originating from distinct BLCs. The longer-wavelength fluorescence band at 1423 nm, demonstrating sensitivity to Bi doping concentration and homogeneity, is attributed to Bi clusters (aggregates of Bi+ions), whereas the shorter-wavelength emission, independent of Bi concentration, originates from isolated Bi+ions. A vacuum-assisted melting-in-tube method with a single-step heating process was employed to fabricate Bi-doped silica-based glasses and fibers. The fluorescence bands of the fibers remained consistent with those of the precursor glasses, indicating no new BLCs were formed during fiber fabrication. The modulation of fluorescence bands was primarily governed by Bi cluster formation. Suppressing Bi clustering through co-doping with Al/Ge or optimizing fabrication conditions offers an effective route to tailor the fluorescence properties of Bi-doped glasses and fibers.

As Ni-based electrochromic (EC) materials have a wider band gap, low electron conductivity, and limited reactive sites, it is challenging for Ni-based EC materials to obtain high optical modulation with a realistic colored state and high coloration efficiency. This study presents Ni-Bi hydroxide (Ni-Bi-40, Ni-Bi-60, and Ni-Bi-80) for dual-functional EC and energy storage films, aiming to address challenges in Ni-based EC materials. By introducing Bi³⁺, which have a larger ionic radius than Ni²⁺, the films experience lattice strain, inducing crystalline distortions that expand interlayer spacing and enhance ion mobility. This leads to significant improvements in EC performance, with optical modulation values of 77 %, 80 %, and 60 % and transmissive colored states of 20 %, 2 %, and 0 % for Ni-Bi-40, Ni-Bi-60, and Ni-Bi-80 films, respectively. These films demonstrate high cyclic stability up to 7000 seconds and coloration efficiency of 49, 52, and 41 cm²/C. In terms of energy storage, the films achieve specific capacitance of 32.1, 58.3, and 65.4 F/cm² at 5 mV/s for Ni-Bi-40, Ni-Bi-60, and Ni-Bi-80 films, with GCD tests yielding 83.0, 153.0, and 365.0 mF/cm² at 8 mA/cm², respectively. These findings highlight the potential of Ni-Bi films for advanced multifunctional applications in energy-efficient technologies.

Lead-free dielectric ceramic capacitors have attracted substantial attention for high pulsed power technologies, but achieving a large recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) with high efficiency ( η ) and good thermal stability remains a bottleneck. In this work, we address this challenge in (Bi,Na)TiO 3 -based relaxor ferroelectric through a composition design strategy that induces local structure heterogeneity. This heterogeneity is created from the local random field/stress of the chemical modifiers due to different valence states and ionic sizes, which promotes the formation of polar nano-regions (PNRs). These PNRs minimize the energy barrier, resulting in an excellent energy storage performance, W rec of 8.53 J/cm 3 and η of 80.7 %. Moreover, the material exhibits breakthrough thermal stability, maintaining a W rec ≈ 3.41 ± 0.40 J/cm 3 and η ≈ 82.2 ± 8.2 % over a wide temperature range up to 240 °C. This study provides a path for designing advanced relaxor ferroelectric dielectric ceramic capacitors for energy storage applications.

Comprehensive Summary As a key epigenetic modification, 5-formylcytosine (5fC) controls many important cell functions, such as gene expression and cell differentiation. However, 5fC exists in mammalian tissues and cells with low content, and its structure is highly similar to 5-methylcytosine (5mC), 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and 5-carboxycytosine (5caC), which requires the detection method for detecting 5fC with high sensitivity and specificity. In this experiment, WS 2 /Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 was used as the photoactive material, 5fC antibody was used as the target molecule recognition reagent, and rolling amplification (RCA) was employed as the signal amplification strategy to construct a novel photoelectrochemical biosensor for detecting 5-formylcytosine deoxynucleotide (5fdCTP). Firstly, WS 2 /Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 nanocomposite was prepared and characterized, and then modified on the ITO electrode. Then, polyacrylic acid (PAA) was immobilized by electrostatic adsorption, which was employed as the antibody capture reagent based on the covalent reaction of –COOH on PAA with –NH 2 on Ab. Subsequently, 5fdCTP was recognized through immunoreaction, triggering the subsequent rolling circle amplification reaction with the aid of the crosslinker of Zr 4+ . Finally, positive methylene blue (MB) was adsorbed by negative ssDNA, resulting in an increased photoelectric conversion efficiency of WS 2 /Bi/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 and improved detection sensitivity. The linear range of the PEC biosensor for detecting 5fdCTP was 0.05—100 nmol/L, and the minimum detection concentration was 12.4 pmol/L (S/N = 3). The applicability of this method has been evaluated by studying the influence of Cd 2+ and antibiotic concentration on the 5fC content in the genomic DNA of maize seedlings.

The contamination of water sources by heavy metals poses significant risks to human health and the environment, driving the need for effective remediation strategies. Adsorption is considered one of the most efficient methods for removing metal ions from wastewater. While graphene oxide (GO) has shown promise as an adsorbent, its ability to adsorb metal cations is still limited. In this study, we enhanced the adsorption performance of GO through carboxylation, leveraging the ability of ionized carboxyl groups (-COO−) to form electrostatic and coordination complexes with Bi³+ ions. The influence of carboxylation degree on Bi³+ adsorption was systematically investigated, along with the role of reaction temperature in modulating the extent of carboxyl functionalization. Successful grafting of chloroacetic acid onto GO via nucleophilic substitution was confirmed through material characterization. XPS and ICP analyses demonstrated that higher carboxylation degrees, achieved at elevated temperatures, correlate strongly with improved Bi³+ adsorption. The carboxylated GO synthesized at 80 °C exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 12.18 mg/L. These results underscore that increasing the carboxyl group content significantly enhances Bi³+ uptake. This work offers a feasible strategy for designing functionalized GO-based adsorbents for the efficient removal of heavy metals.

A novel functionalized graphene oxide (F-GO) decorated with a double-phosphaphenanthrene structure was fabricated using a covalent modification method. The F-GO with Bi-DOPO groups then was introduced into the epoxy matrix as a highly effective flame retardant. The Flame retardant epoxy resins (FREP) containing F-GO exhibited superior fire-resistant performance with extremely low loading. When the content of F-GO was 1 wt%, the limiting oxygen index value of the FREP was increased from 19.9% to 30.8%, and the total heat release and the peak heat release rate was decreased by 44.0% and 55.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, the tensile and impact tests results indicated that the mechanical properties of the epoxy resins were improved with the addition of F-GO. Furthermore, the thermogravimetric analysis showed that F-GO greatly increased the char-yield of the cured FREP. Based on the char analyses of SEM images, F-GO was conducive to form a more protective char barrier for FREP during combustion. F-GO developed a synergistic flame-retardant effect of the Bi-DOPO derivative and graphene layer structures on epoxy resins.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) with high safety and high energy densities draw widespread attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the intrinsic defects of the solid-state electrolyte (SSE) such as the poor compatibility with electrodes and low ionic conductivity hamper the application of SSMLBs. Herein, we introduce rigid two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanosheets and flexible One-dimensional aramid nanofibers (ANFs) as bi-nanofillers into the polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based SSEs to fabricate a composite solid-state electrolyte (CSE) ANF-PEO-BN with network structure boosting the comprehensive performance of SSMLBs. ANF and BN with special properties and structures are prone to be dispersed homogeneously in the PEO matrix to build the ANF-PEO-BN electrolyte, whose rigid and flexible network structure ensures the formation of Li dendrites inhibited. Furthermore, the dissociation of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI) is promoted and more ion transport channels are provided due to the strong affinity between Lewis acid centers of ANF/BN and Li + /TFSI − . As a result, the LiFePO 4 /Li batteries deliver high-capacity retention of 86% after 500 cycles and Li/Li cells stably cycle beyond 3300 h with small overpotential of 10 mV at 0.1 mA cm −2 /0.2 mAh cm −2 .

Bismuth (Bi)-activated luminescence materials have attracted much attention for their tunable broad emissions ranging from a visible to near-infrared (NIR) region. However, it remains a challenge to regulate the Bi valence state and achieve NIR emission via a facile way. Here, we report the design and preparation of Ba3Sc4O9:Bi phosphors, which emit visible and NIR emissions simultaneously even prepared in the air condition. The self-reduction mechanism of Bi3+ species in Ba3Sc4O9 with a rigid crystal structure is illustrated based on the charge compensation model, and the coexistence of different Bi-active centers, Bi3+ for visible emission, while Bi+ and Bi0 for NIR emission, is confirmed by the spectroscopic data and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The enhanced NIR emission was further achieved through controlled reducing treatment and the related mechanism has also been clarified. This work paves a new way to control bismuth valence and tune the emission of Bi-based luminescence materials for emerging photonics applications.

La x Bi 1− x FeO 3 (LBFO) materials were synthesized by sol–gel method with x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3. LBFO ceramics were obtained by rapid liquid phase sintering and conventional sintering, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the phase transition from twisted diamond R3C to orthogonal Pbnm occurs in the course of the increase of La element doping. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the grain size of LBFO ceramics decreased from 10 to 1 μm, with the increase of La ion doping, and the volatilization of Bi decreases from 6.48 to 1.43%. It was found that LBFO ceramics have the characteristic of negative temperature coefficient (NTC), the resistivity (100 °C) is from 4.32 × 10 6 to 2.71 × 10 8 Ω cm, the material constant ( B 100/700 value) is about 6000–9000 K, the activation energy of LBFO is around 0.56 to 0.82 eV, and the temperature range of LBFO is from 100 to 700 °C. The resistivity change of LBFO is less than 1% after 500 h of ageing at 300 °C.
