Dual-mode fluorescence/colorimetric aptasensor based on Zn,Ce-MOF nanocomposite for sensitive detection of isocarbophos

Yimeng Li,Jiayao Wang,Yi Ran,Yiwei Liu,Xiaopeng Hu

Background A dual-mode fluorescence/colorimetric aptasensor was developed for the sensitive detection of isocarbophos, an organophosphorus pesticide posing significant public health risks. Using Zn,Ce-MOF nanocomposites, this sensor integrated magnetic separation and signal amplification. This integrated biosensing strategy offers a promising tool for environmental safety assurance and food quality control applications. Results The Zn,Ce-MOF nanozyme of this sensor serves as both a carrier of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and oxidase mimic, facilitating enzyme-free TMB oxidation. The dual-readout system enables self-validating detection through independent channels (fluorescence LOD: 0.06 ng mL −1 ; colorimetric LOD: 0.09 ng mL −1 ), with robust performance, high interferent selectivity, and reproducibility. Practical validation in spiked agricultural samples yielded recovery rates of 97.7–113.6 %, confirming the platform's suitability for field-deployable pesticide monitoring. Significance This work developed a fluorescence/visual aptasensor with self-assembled TMB/Au/Zn,Ce-MOF probes for one-step magnetic separation dual-mode detection. This integrated biosensing strategy improves detection efficiency and accuracy, offering a general strategy for multimodal biosensors.

Dual-Mode Ce-MOF Nanozymes for Rapid and Selective Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide in Aquatic Products

Qi Cheng,Xiaoyu Du,Zuyao Fu,Zhaoyang Ding,Jing Xie

Increasing concern over the safety of consumable products, particularly aquatic products, due to freshness issues, has become a pressing issue. Therefore, ensuring the quality and safety of aquatic products is paramount. To address this, a dual-mode colorimetric–fluorescence sensor utilizing Ce-MOF as a mimic peroxidase to detect H2S was developed. Ce-MOF was prepared by a conventional solvothermal synthesis method. Ce-MOF catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). When dissolved, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was present in the solution, and it inhibited the catalytic effect of Ce-MOF and caused the color of the solution to fade from blue to colorless. This change provided an intuitive indication for the detection of H2S. Through steady-state dynamic analysis, the working mechanism of this sensor was elucidated. The sensor exhibited pronounced color changes from blue to colorless, accompanied by a shift in fluorescence from none to light blue. Additionally, UV–vis absorption demonstrated a linear correlation with the H2S concentration, ranging from 200 to 2300 µM, with high sensitivity (limit of detection, LOD = 0.262 μM). Fluorescence intensity also showed a linear correlation, ranging from 16 to 320 µM, with high selectivity and sensitivity (LOD = 0.156 μM). These results underscore the sensor’s effectiveness in detecting H2S. Furthermore, the sensor enhanced the accuracy of H2S detection and fulfilled the requirements for assessing food freshness and safety.

Solubility and Valence Variation of Ce in Low-Alkali Borosilicate Glass and Glass Network Structure Analysis

Liu Yang,Yongchang Zhu,Jichuan Huo,Zhu Cui,Xingquan Zhang,Xuanjiang Dong,Jie Feng

Low-alkali borosilicate glass was used as the immobilization substrate, and Ce was used to replicate the trivalent and tetravalent actinides, in order to create simulated waste glass through melt heat treatment. The valence of Ce and solubility of CeO2in waste glass were studied as well as its network structure and thermal and chemical stability. The solubility of Ce in waste glass was examined by XRD and SEM. The network structure was examined by Raman spectroscopy. The valence of Ce was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Thermal analysis and product consistency (PCT) were employed to determine the thermal and chemical stability of waste glasses. The results show that the solubility of cerium in low-alkali borosilicate glasses is at least 25.wt.% and precipitates a spherical CeO2crystalline phase when it exceeds the solid solution limit; Ce is immobilized in the glass by entering the interstices of the glass network. Depolymerization and the transition from [BO3] to [BO4] occurs when CeO2doping levels rise. About 60 percent of Ce4+is converted to Ce3+, and the thermal stability of glass rises then falls with the increase of CeO2. All samples exhibit strong leaching resistance, with the average mass loss of Ce at 28 days being less than 10−4gm−2d−1.Keywords:low-alkali borosilicate;cerium;Raman;XPS

Catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide over α-Fe2O3/SiO2 catalyst promoted with Co and Ce oxides

Yan Zhinan,Kang Yong,Li Dan,Liu Yu Chun

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is a promising alternative to the catalysts currently used due to its low cost, fairly good activity and environmentally friendly properties. In this study, α-Fe 2 O 3 /SiO 2 nanocatalysts promoted with cobalt and cerium (Co 3 O 4 -CeO 2 -α-Fe 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ) were prepared via wet co-impregnation method, and the effects of promoters on catalytic performances for SO 2 oxidation at different temperatures, SO 2 concentrations, cycle numbers, catalytic stability as well as catalyst charging were investigated. The results indicated that SO 2 conversion rose with the increasing of catalyst charging and SO 2 concentration. Also, the as-prepared catalyst had the maximum SO 2 conversion at the reaction temperature of 500 °C, excellent catalytic recyclability and activity stability. Its physicochemical and redox properties were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, FT-IR and XPS. The results of XRD and FT-IR spectra confirmed that the formation of Ce 2 FeO 4 network in the Co-Ce co-doped catalysts proved the promoting effect of cerium on higher valence state of the active ingredient. The N2 adsorption/desorption results evidenced that cerium could increase the proportion of mesoporous, and the XPS spectra indicated that cobalt and cerium in the catalysts could increase the available oxygen (O β /O α ) for the redox reaction. Due to its excellent low onset temperature, fairly good activity and environmentally friendly properties, the as-prepared catalyst of Co 3 O 4 -CeO 2 -α-Fe 2 O 3 /SiO 2 appeared to be more efficient for the SO 2 conversion in a large concentration range.

The solubility, microstructure, and chemical durability of Ce-doped YIG ceramics designed as actinide waste forms

Shilin Luo,Zhitong Xu,Jian Liu,Baoliang Xu,Shiyin Ji,Yi Ding,Shengtai Zhang,Ling Zhang,Tao Duan,Jiehong Lei

Summary Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is a potential matrix for immobilizing high-level radioactive waste (HLW) due to its high actinide solubility and chemical flexibility. In this study, Ce was employed as a surrogate of Pu. A series of Y 3- x Ce x Fe 5 O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) samples were prepared by solid-state sintering at 1400°C to investigate the solubility, microstructure, and chemical durability of Ce-doped YIG. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the solubility of the Ce in a single garnet was 32 mol% at synthesis temperature of 1400°C. The SEM analysis indicated the YIG ceramic grain growth and compactness as Ce concentrations increased. The XPS analysis indicated that the amount of Ce 4+ out of the total Ce increased as the CeO 2 doping increased, and the maximum value was more than 75.9% in the sample synthesis at 1400°C. Static leaching experiments were also conducted on the single Ce-doped garnet synthesized at 1400°C. The normalized LR Ce and LR Y release rates were approximately 10 −4 and 10 −5 g m −2 d −1 after 42 days, respectively. The chemical durability was comparable to other ceramic matrices (such as pyrochlore and zircon, among others). These results demonstrated that YIG ceramics are suitable for immobilizing HLW, such as Pu or U. Highlights The solubility of Ce in single-phase YIG was 32 mol% at 1400°C. Grain size and compactness increased Ce content. The concentration of Ce 4+ in total Ce of sample could be over 75.9%. The obtained YIG ceramics exhibit excellent chemical stability. Novelty Statement Y 3-x Ce x Fe 5 O 12 ceramics were prepared by solid-state sintering and the solubility, microstructure, and chemical durability were investigated. The solubility of Ce was 32 mol% at 1400°C. The obtained YIG ceramics exhibit excellent chemical stability.

Semi-crystalline Ce(III/IV)-chitosan architecture overcomes the oxidation-adsorption paradox in hazardous antimony treatment

Miaojia Du,Yaopeng Zhang,Yuezhong Wen,Fang Li,Kai Yin,Wenliang Wu,Chensi Shen

Antimony (Sb) treatment presents a paradox: oxidizing toxic Sb(III) to Sb(V) for detoxification generates Sb(OH) 6 − species with a large hydration radius (7.36 Å) that hinders adsorption on conventional crystalline adsorbents due to limited accessible sites. We developed a Ce(III/IV)-chitosan semi-crystalline complex with mixed-valence coordination (Ce 3+ /Ce 4+  = 62.3:37.7) that addresses this challenge. Ce coordination constructs a semi-crystalline architecture where amorphous regions provide more accessible sites for large Sb(OH) 6 − while ordered domains maintain structural stability. The mixed-valence system sustained positive surface charge (+25 to +40 mV, pH 2–10) for electrostatic Sb(V) attraction, while Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ cycling catalyzed H 2 O 2 -mediated Sb(III) oxidation. At 2 mg/L Sb, a challenging concentration for industrial wastewater, the material achieved >98% removal within 90 min, reducing residual Sb to <0.04 mg/ L. maximum capacities reached 595.5 mg/g (Sb(V)) and 461.6 mg/g (Sb(III)), with excellent regenerability (>86% after five cycles). This work demonstrates how coordination-induced structural reorganization and mixed-valence chemistry overcome fundamental barriers in mixed-oxidation-state contaminant treatment.

Ce 4f and oxygen vacancy synergistically reinforce Cu-O covalency for efficient CO2 electroreduction to ethylene

Jiawei Wang,Jiacheng Li,Fumin Wang,Xubin Zhang,Shuai Liu,Shuai Niu,Liang Chen,Xu Wu

Stabilizing the Cu δ+ (1 < δ < 2) valence state during CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) process is essential to enhance the C-C coupling and further promote the conversion of CO 2 into value-added C 2+ products. Herein, we propose a new strategy to stabilize the Cu δ+ under the synergistic effect of 4f orbital and oxygen vacancies (O v ) through the construction of Ce doped CuO with enriched O v via symbiotic strategy (CuCeO-O v ). Theoretical calculations and experimental results show the derived gradient orbital coupling O v -[Ce 4f-O 2p-Cu 3d] unit with Ce 4f as electron buffer as well as O v as electron supply station can facilitate the electron itinerancy during CO 2 RR process, which is beneficial to reinforce the Cu-O covalency and inhibit peroxidation of Cu δ+ , thus endowing CuCeO-O v with a highly active (Faradaic efficiency of C 2 H 4 reaches 51% at −1.3 V vs. RHE) and stable bidirectional self-regulating capability (the current density and FE of C 2 H 4 show virtually no attenuation even after 13 h) simultaneously. This work not only gives a profound insight to the synergistic effect of dopants and O v in metal oxides but also provides new guidance to structural design of high-performance insert materials.

Enhanced adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) onto phytic acid modified N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide

Zengjin Fu,Yan Hao,Tingrui Lin,Huiling Ma,Huazheng Sai,Hui Yang

A novel adsorbent (PHPM) was synthesized through the functionalization of N -(2-Hydroxyethyl) acrylamide (HEAA) with phytic acid (PA) and applied for the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. The material was characterized by means of FTIR, TGA, SEM, and XPS. The present study systematically investigated the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial La(III) or Ce(III) concentration, and pH value on the adsorption capacity. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of PHPM for La(III) and Ce(III) were determined to be 198.0 and 186.2 mg·g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, as further confirmed by nonlinear fitting with low RMSE and χ 2 values. Thermodynamic analysis revealed negative Δ G values, positive Δ H and Δ S values, indicating a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven process. Furthermore, PHPM demonstrated high adsorption efficiency toward La(III) and Ce(III), even in the presence of competing ions. A preliminary cost analysis indicated that the preparation of PHPM was economically feasible with low cost. The adsorbent maintained approximately 50% of its initial adsorption capacity after ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The findings demonstrate that PHPM was a promising adsorbent for the recovery of La(III) and Ce(III) from aqueous environments.

Simple Preparation of LaPO4:Ce, Tb Phosphors by an Ionic-Liquid-Driven Supported Liquid Membrane System

Jianguo Li,Hongying Dong,Fan Yang,Liangcheng Sun,Zhigang Zhao,Ruixi Bai,Hao Zhang

In this work, LaPO4:Ce, Tb phosphors were prepared by firing a LaPO4:Ce, Tb precipitate using an ionic-liquid-driven supported liquid membrane system. The entire system consisted of three parts: a mixed rare earth ion supply phase, a phosphate supply phase, and an ionic-liquid-driven supporting liquid membrane phase. This method showed the advantages of a high flux, high efficiency, and more controllable reaction process. The release rate of PO43−from the liquid film under different types of ionic liquid, the ratio of the rare earth ions in the precursor mixture, and the structure, morphology, and photoluminescence properties of LaPO4:Ce, Tb were investigated by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence emission spectra methods. The results showed that a pure phase of lanthanum orthophosphate with a monoclinic structure can be formed. Due to differences in the anions in the rare earth supply phase, the prepared phosphors showed micro-spherical (when using rare earth sulfate as the raw material) and nanoscale stone-shape (when using rare earth nitrate as the raw material) morphologies. Moreover, the phosphors prepared by this method had good luminescent properties, reaching a maximum emission intensity under 277 nm excitation with a predominant green emission at 543 nm which corresponded to the5D4-7F5transition of Tb3+.

Site-Tailored bimetallic Co-Ce catalyst on N-Doped carbon for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin

Zhiqin Li,Yuxin Kang,Tengran luo,Zegang Qiu,Zhuoyuan Li,Yanan Zhu

Ce reduced the charge density around Co and enriched defects on surface of catalyst. • Ce incorporation facilitates vanillin adsorption and H 2 activation at molecular level. • 9Co-1Ce/NC achieves 100 % vanillin conversion and 100 % selectivity of target product. • Co-Ce synergy promotes rate-determining C-O bond cleavage of two-step reaction pathway. The efficient conversion of lignin-derived oxygenates into fuels and high-value chemicals is pivotal for the development of renewable energy systems. A central challenge lies in the selective cleavage of the inherently recalcitrant C–O bonds in bio-oil model compounds under mild conditions. In this study, a multi-interface Co-Ce catalyst supported on nitrogen-doped carbon was successfully constructed via a bimetallic synergy and metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived strategy. The introduction of Ce exerted a multifunctional synergistic effect beyond that of a conventional promoter, realizing multi-scale modulation of the catalyst structure and performance. It modulated the electronic structure of Co active sites, thereby optimizing reactant adsorption and H 2 activation. Also, it suppressed the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles, thereby enhancing metal dispersion. Concurrently, it significantly increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the support surface, which collaboratively provided abundant active sites. Furthermore, it guided the formation of a hierarchical pore architecture conducive to mass transfer. Through this precise design and regulation of the active site microenvironment, the optimal catalyst achieved 100 % conversion of the model compound vanillin with 100 % selectivity toward 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under mild conditions, while also exhibiting excellent cycling stability and broad substrate applicability. This work not only demonstrates catalytic performance rivaling that of noble metals through the efficient synergy between non-noble metals (Ce and Co) but, more importantly, elucidates the underlying mechanism for the selective cleavage of C–O bonds. Mn/Ce@HKUST-1 for Efficient Removal of Gaseous Thallium: Insights from Kinetic and Experimental Studies

Qiang Ma,Lijun Jiang,Bowen Yang,Bowen Xu,Qingyuan Wang,Qihong Wu,Ping Ning,Yingjie Zhang,Jin Huang,Jiming Hao

Gaseous thallium (Tl) pollution events, primarily caused by non-ferrous mineral refineries and fossil fuel combustion, have increased over the past few decades. To prevent gaseous Tl distribution from flue gas, MnO2/CeO2@HKUST-1 (MCH) was synthesized and found to achieve a gaseous Tl(I) removal level of up to 90% at 423 K, a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 2000 h–1/mL with an Mn dose of 10%, maintained over 10 h. The best Mn/Ce ratio was found to be 9:1. To further investigate surface kinetic behavior, four commonly used kinetic models were applied, including the Eley–Rideal (ER) model, Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH) model, Mars–van Krevelen (MVK) model, and pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. While the ER and LH models had the slightest deviation, the MVK model was the most reliable. The CatMAP software was also used to match the simulation deviation. This work demonstrated the Tl removal mechanism and provided insights into the accuracy of kinetic models on minor-radius heavy metal. Thus, this research may help promote the design of reactors, heavy metal removal rates, and flue gas purification technology selection.

Study on in situ modification mechanism of mg-Ce-Y based hydrogen storage alloy by ZnF2

Jiwei Yao,Hui Yong,Yang Zhao,Chengyan Sun,Xianliu Xu,Baosheng Liu,Dongliang Zhao,Jifan Hu,Yanghuan Zhang

The Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5  +  x wt% ZnF 2 ( x  = 3, 6, 10, 15) composites were prepared by mechanical ball-milling. The effects of ZnF 2 contents on the hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 alloy were investigated by XRD , ICP-OES, TEM, PCT and DSC . The excellent hydriding-dehydriding characteristics of the samples after activation were attributed to the catalytic effect of the MgF 2 and MgZn 2 phases introduced in situ by the addition of ZnF 2 . The Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5  + 6 wt% ZnF 2 composites exhibit the fastest hydrogen adsorption/desorption kinetics and lower decomposition temperatures. At 360 °C, 4.12 wt% H 2 can be absorbed within 180 s, and completely dehydrogenated within 740 s. In addition, the activation energy of dehydrogenation is reduced to 89.5 kJ/ mol, the optimal dehydrogenation temperature is reduced to 318 °C. It is due to the generation of in situ catalysts that weaken the Mg H bond energy, refine the grain sizes , expand specific surface area and increase hydrogen diffusion paths. However, the improvement of the thermodynamics of the composites is limited, the enthalpy is 75.9 kJ/mol H 2 .
