Effect of molten carbonate composition on CO2 permeation mechanism

Peng Zhang,Song Wang,Bingjie Pang,Xuefeng Zhu,Weishen Yang

High temperature dual-phase mixed conductor membranes are promising for CO 2 separation and utilization. Most efforts are focused on materials, thickness, microstructural features and surface modifications of the electronic conducting phase. Here, we unveil the effect of the carbonate-ionic conducting phase on CO 2 permeation process with a dense NiO-based dual-phase membrane. The results demonstrate that the CO 2 flux increases first and then decreases with the increase of Li 2 CO 3 addition amount. The controlling step of CO 2 permeation changes from bulk diffusion to surface reaction as much more Li 2 CO 3 was added into the carbonate-ionic conducting phase. Model analysis indicates that the peroxide formation process on the membrane surface is the rate-limiting step, which is closely related to the oxygen solubility of molten carbonate.

A novel thermoplastic elastomer from double CO2-Route oligomers

Jiaxiang Qin,Junqiao Jiang,Shuxian Ye,Jiaxin Liang,Youji Tao,Shuanjin Wang,Dongmei Han,Min Xiao

As carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is an inexpensive, abundant, sustainable and green carbonyl resource, its utilization to produce value-added chemicals and polymeric materials has attracted much more attention. In this work, a novel CO 2 route polyurea (PUa) was synthesized. The chemical composition, molecular structure, and aggregation structure of polyurea has been confirmed by 1 H-NMR, HMBC-NMR, DSC, TG, MALDI-TOF MS and POM. The result from POM shows that polyurea gives out a spherulitic morphology, exhibited a typical black cross pattern formed by many concentric circles with different light and shade. Moreover, shape memory polymers of polyurea-multiblock-poly(propylene carbonate) (PUa- mb -PPCs) with a M n nearly 4.72 × 10 4  Da and a polydispersity index (PDI) of 1.51–1.64 were synthesized by chain extension of the polyurea with CO 2 derived poly(propylene carbonate) diols (PPC-OH). The PUa- mb -PPCs possess high strength and elasticity because the crystallinity formed by polyurea and amorphous region from PPC. Notably, excellent shape memory effect (SME) is observed in shape thermomechanical testing. The present work provides a simple and renewable process for the synthesis of CO 2 -copolymer with multiblock structure, opening a new route for preparation of functional polymeric materials from carbon dioxide conversion.

High-Quality Cu-Al Nanocrystals for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction

Guangbo Wang,Hao Zhang,Jiahao Yang,Zeyi Lu,Wenqiong Li,Yanmei Tang,Yun He,Xiaoguang Liang,Xingyuan San,Vellaisamy A. L. Roy

In the quest to optimise the catalytic activity and selectivity of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), various imperfections-such as defects, grain boundaries, and vacancies-pose significant challenges. In a groundbreaking approach, we present the synthesis of well-structured CuAl nanocrystals featuring a preferential (111) crystal facet, a first in the field. This innovative structure not only enhances selectivity but also establishes a clear structure-activity relationship for CO2 RR. The unique properties of CuAl nanocrystals stem from their ability to finely control bonding interactions with CO2 RR intermediates, driven by the synergistic effects of the (111) facet. Utilising a straightforward chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method, we produce these nanocrystals, revealing the atomic distribution of Cu and Al on this dominant surface, which crucially influences CO2 RR performance. Among them, Cu96Al4 achieves the highest Faraday efficiency (FE) for HCOOH (77.71%) and CO (18.01%), attributed to the synergistic effects of Cu and Al arising from the optimal d-band centre of Cu active sites and the strong electron-donating ability of Al. This interaction facilitates the electron transfer from Cu to *COOH, resulting in a high FE for C1 product. Our findings pave the way for advanced catalytic designs that can significantly elevate CO2 conversion efficiencies.

Alkyl Thiol Surface Engineering for Efficient Acidic CO2 Electroreduction

Yichen Meng,Yaxin Jin,Hongxu Wu,Yihan Xu,Zhanpeng Liang,Jianlong Lin,Tianxiang Yan,Yanwei Lum,Sheng Zhang,Xinbin Ma

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to value-added chemicals and synthetic fuels represents a promising strategy for mitigating carbon emissions using renewable electricity. Notably, performing CO2RR in acidic electrolytes to produce formic acid (HCOOH) offers several advantages, including reduced flooding issues, enhanced CO2 utilization, and lower separation costs. However, the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media significantly undermines CO2RR efficiency. In this work, we demonstrate that the interfacial wettability of SnO2 catalysts can be precisely controlled via alkyl thiol modification, effectively suppressing HER. Through integrated in situ spectroscopic characterization and theoretical calculations, we reveal that dual bonding orbitals between Sn and S drive electronic reconstruction, providing the electronic basis for stabilizing Sn oxidation states. This enhances the *OCHO intermediate formation on the SnO2 surface while strengthening its adsorption. Consequently, the optimized catalyst achieves a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 91% for formic acid in an acidic electrolyte (pH≈1), maintaining stable operation for approximately 90 h at a current density of 200 mA·cm–2. By simultaneously regulating the electronic structure and local chemical environment, this surface engineering approach offers a paradigm for developing robust and efficient electrocatalysts under acidic conditions.

Mo-modified silicon nitride enables efficient CO2 photocatalytic reduction

Jun Yang,Weibin Zhang,Xiankui Lv,Yumin Luan

Mo introduction significantly enhances CO 2 adsorption and visible-light harvesting. • MSN2 achieves a CO production rate of 15.95 μmol g −1 h −1 with 99% selectivity. • Mo-induced active sites promote charge separation and accelerate CO 2 activation. • DFT calculations reveal the critical role of Mo sites in lowering CO 2 reduction barriers. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction provides a promising strategy for carbon resource utilization and solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, achieving highly efficient and selective CO 2 conversion remains challenging due to the intrinsically stable CO 2 molecules, rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, and competing reaction pathways. Herein, a series of Mo-modified silicon nitride (MSN) photocatalysts were constructed through a facile calcination strategy, enabling synergistic regulation of electronic structure, surface active sites, and CO 2 adsorption capability. The optimized MSN2 catalyst exhibits outstanding photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity, under simulated solar irradiation, the CO evolution rate reaches a maximum of 15.95 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is significantly higher than that of pristine Si 3 N 4 , accompanied by an ultrahigh CO selectivity of 99%. Comprehensive characterization shows that Mo introduction induces lattice distortion and surface active sites, thereby enhancing visible-light absorption. In situ FTIR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations further reveal that Mo-associated surface active sites serve as highly active centers for CO 2 activation by stabilizing key intermediates and lowering the free-energy barrier for CO formation. This work and electronic modulation in Mo-modified silicon nitride and offers a rational design strategy for developing efficient and selective low-cost photocatalysts for solar-driven CO 2 conversion.

Supercritical CO2-Enabled Exfoliation of SrSnO3 Nanocrystals With Ferromagnetism

Jiaxin Liu,Bo Gao,Yuning Liang,Lei Xu,Weiqian Kong,Yonglong Zhu,Qun Xu

With the rapid development of spintronics, ferromagnetic nanomaterials have shown critical unique advantages in the fields of information storage and quantum computation. The ABO 3 -type perovskite oxide SrSnO 3 is expected to realize room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) due to its tunable crystal structure and unique electron arrangement. However, developing stable RTFM in transition metal-free SrSnO 3 remains a long-standing challenge—traditional strategies often cause lattice damage or impurity residues, failing to balance structural integrity and ferromagnetic performance. In this process, the precise supercritical CO 2 (SC CO 2 )-induced strain effect can lead to stretching in the a-axis direction while synchronously realizing repair of oxygen vacancies, forming a synergistic regulation of lattice structure and defect states. In addition, combining the systematic optimization of change in the crystal size to ultimately successfully realize the RTFM in SrSnO 3 ( T c = 400 K, M s = 0.019 emu g −1 ) can be presented. Therefore, this study establishes a new strategy for the development of transition metal-free ferromagnetic materials for the application of spintronic devices at room temperature, which not only enriches the technical toolbox for designing transition metal-free ferromagnetic perovskites but also provides a feasible pathway for their practical application in next-generation spintronic devices.

Anion Effect on CO2 Electrochemical Reduction in Acidic Media

Shiyu Zhang,Longfei Guo,Hongpu Huang,Shuifen Xie,Aoni Xu,Xue Wang

The CO 2 electroreduction reaction (CO 2 RR) in acidic media offers a promising route to convert renewable electricity into value-added chemicals with high carbon utilization, yet its selectivity is severely limited by competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Despite extensive investigations into cation effects in acidic CO 2 RR, the role of anions remains underexplored. Here, we systematically investigate the effect of three common electrolyte anions—Cl − , SO 4 2− , and H 2 PO 4 − —on acidic CO 2 RR. Theoretical studies suggest that Cl − induces the most negative surface charge on Cu relative to SO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − , which enhances C–C coupling and thereby improves selectivity toward C 2+ products. Electrochemical evaluation shows that Cu catalysts in Cl − -containing electrolytes deliver the highest C 2+ selectivity, surpassing those in SO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − environments. Specifically, we achieve a peak C 2+ Faradaic efficiency of 82% at 300 mA cm −2 . The promotional role of Cl − is further observed on Ag catalysts in acidic CO 2 RR. In situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that Cl − enhances the adsorption of *CO intermediates on Cu surfaces, thereby promoting C–C coupling and C 2+ product generation. This work reports an effective anion electrolyte engineering strategy to enhance CO 2 RR performance under acidic conditions. Graphical The type of anions in the electrolyte affects the performance of acidic CO 2 electroreduction. Compared to SO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − anions, the presence of Cl − anions facilitates *CO intermediate adsorption and thus promotes C–C coupling toward C 2+ products in acidic media on Cu catalysts.

Low-temperature regeneration through chemically triggered physical CO2 absorption

Shuai Yin,Bin Jiang,Haoyu Meng,Zishuo Ma,Feng Zhang,Jiao Geng

Anhydrous TMHDA-EG enables tertiary-amine-catalyzed CO 2 absorption and regeneration at 55 °C. • Alcohol-CO 2 reactions create new oxygen sites that promote quasi-physical CO 2 uptake. • Demonstrated stable cyclic regeneration of the absorbent under low-grade heat and light irradiation. Reducing the regeneration temperature is an effective way to decrease the energy consumption in carbon dioxide capture. The anhydrous absorbent prepared by blending tertiary amines with ethylene glycol (EG) can form an unstable chemical structure with CO 2 , constituting a quasi- physical absorption system that can be efficiently regenerated below 60 °C or under light conditions. Experimental results and theoretical analysis reveal that glycolate (EGCOO − ), which is produced through tertiary-amine catalysis, can boost additional CO 2 uptake physical absorption Since EGCOO − is inherently unstable and the physically absorbed CO 2 is easily released, N , N , N ′, N ′-tetramethyl-1,6-hexanediamine (TMHDA)-EG system maintains effective absorption/desorption cycling within 30 °C–55 °C, making it well-suited for CO 2 capture and release under conditions with pronounced diurnal temperature fluctuations. The absorbent could be regenerated with a solar simulator, showing excellent energy adaptability in industries. Such absorbents may serve as CO 2 carriers for greenhouse agriculture on Earth or for future extraterrestrial bases, enabling regulation of CO 2 concentrations to promote indoor agricultural productivity. MWCNT-supported Cu11In9 nanoparticles for CO2 electroreduction to CO

Tianle Ge,Jiangfeng Mou,Rui Chen,Yuping Li,Kaizhao Wang,Yafei Wang,Kaijun Wang,Jin Hu,Tianyou Chen

Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts is important for sustainable CO 2 utilization. Here, spherical Cu 11 In 9 alloy nanoparticles were synthesized on an MWCNT network via an impregnation-assisted reduction method. Electrochemical measurements in an H-type cell showed that Cu 11 In 9 @MWCNTs promoted CO 2 -to-CO conversion in 0.3 mol L −1 tetrabutylammonium chloride/acetonitrile (Bu 4 NCl/AN) electrolyte. At −2.4 V vs SHE, the Faradaic efficiency for CO (FE CO ) reached 95.8%, and the CO partial current density ( j CO ) approached 40 mA cm −2 . During 20 h of continuous electrolysis, the catalyst maintained approximately 95% CO selectivity and a stable current density. XPS and PDOS analyses indicated that Cu-In alloying modified the local electronic structures of Cu and In and shifted the d-band center of Cu away from the Fermi level. DFT calculations further showed more favorable CO 2 -to-CO energetics and less favorable H adsorption on Cu 11 In 9 than on Cu and In, consistent with the experimentally observed high CO selectivity and low H 2 formation. The MWCNT network maintained the dispersion and structural stability of the alloy nanoparticles, thereby increasing the exposure of accessible active sites and facilitating electrolyte contact and charge transport.

Pulsed Electrolysis Promotes CO2 Reduction on Tin Oxide Catalyst

Xin Li,Chang Liu,Bingshuang Li,Jin Li,Shifeng Wang,Xiaoxi Huang

Graphical This study compared electrochemical CO 2 reduction performance catalyzed by SnO 2 under constant cathodic potential ( E c ) and pulsed modes with periodic cathodic ( E c ) and anodic ( E a ) potentials. The latter strategy shows higher formate selectivity because pulsed electrolysis can regenerate active SnO x phase. This work enables the control of CO 2 reduction selectivity by tuning the applied potential program. The performance of electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is determined by multiple factors, including the optimization of catalysts and electrolyser, along with the electrolysis technique. Recently, pulsed electrolysis has been found to tailor the selectivity and prolong the stability of CO 2 RR on a variety of catalysts, with the most focus on Cu-based materials. The investigation of pulsed electrolysis on Sn-based materials remains at early stage. Herein, we evaluate the CO 2 reduction selectivity of tin oxide electrocatalyst under constant potential electrolysis (CPE) and pulsed potential electrolysis (PPE). Tin oxide achieves higher selectivity toward formate under PPE conditions in comparison with CPE. Induced by applied potential, tin oxide catalyst undergoes obvious reconstruction and into the composite of Sn-SnO 2 in the process of CO 2 reduction under both PPE and CPE conditions. The high selectivity under PPE condition is ascribed to the formation of SnO x on the catalyst surface due to the applied anodic potential.

Nitrogen vacancies in polymeric carbon nitrides promote CO2 photoreduction

Zhidong Yang,Ya Zhang,Hongxia Zhang,Jianghong Zhao,Hu Shi,Ming Zhang,Hengquan Yang,Zhanfeng Zheng,Pengju Yang

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into valuable chemicals and fuels is thought to be an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve sustainable carbon cycling. Recent studies have confirmed that polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) can drive CO 2 reduction reaction under visible light irradiation. However, the pristine PCN typically suffers from moderate efficiency. Herein, nitrogen-vacancies-functionalized PCN (NV S -PCN) photocatalysts are successfully prepared via a novel formic acid-assisted etching protocol for the first time. It is found that the NVs are mainly stemmed from the selectively breaking of surface N-(C) 3 sites within PCN matrix. Steady-state photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL, and photocurrent results approve that the NVs can significantly suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. CO 2 temperature programmed desorption and DFT calculations determine that the NVs modification can optimize the electronic properties of NVs-PCN photosystem, and thus considerably improve the activation of CO 2 , while lower the formation barrier of COOH* intermediates. Consequently, the NVs-PCN photosystem exhibits a 279-fold improvement in CO 2 reduction activity over the pristine PCN under 400 nm light irradiation. Moreover, we successfully prepare another NVs-modified PCN-T (trithiocyanuric acid as a precursor) under the same preparation conditions. This NVs-PCN-T photosystem also shows exceptional performances for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction and hydrogen production with visible light. The apparent quantum yields (AQYs) for CO 2 reduction and hydrogen production reach as high as 6.17 % and 31.08 % at 400 nm, respectively. The insights provided in this work are expected to provide a novel clue for manipulating catalytic properties and advancing the in-depth understanding on the role of defect structure of photocatalysts during CO 2 reduction.

Surfactants promote microbial CO2 fixation by enhancing nutrient utilization

Jia Wang,Piao Yi Jiang,Jia Bing Liu,Wang Kai Tong,Han Tang,Min-tian Gao,Nan Liu,Jiajun Hu,Jixiang Li

Surfactants, essential chemicals in daily life, are widely utilized across industries, from pharmaceuticals to agriculture, leading to their extensive presence in soils and aquatic environments. Meanwhile, as microbial metabolites, surfactants play a crucial role in enhancing nutrient utilization and promoting the rapid growth of microorganisms. This study aimed to use anionic, nonionic, and cationic surfactants to promote the growth of autotrophic microorganisms and break through the bottleneck of low microbial CO 2 fixation efficiency. Among them, only anionic surfactants exhibited significant and universal promoting effects, with a maximum enhancement of 59 %–95 % on autotrophic strains utilizing the Calvin cycle. Furthermore, anionic surfactants, in combination with autotrophic microorganisms, were applied as amendments to improve soil, effectively increasing soil organic carbon content by 27 %–54 %. The long-term effects of these amendments depend on several mechanisms: promoting the Calvin cycle, enhancing soil organic carbon metabolism, facilitating nutrient transport, and reducing the abundance of genes associated with surfactant-degrading enzymes. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the impacts of surfactants on the environmental CO 2 fixation capacity and introduces a novel approach for enhancing soil carbon sink capacity.
