Preparation of a core–shell magnetic ion-imprinted polymer via a sol–gel process for selective extraction of Cu(II) from herbal medicines

Huan He,Deli Xiao,Jia He,Hui Li,Hua He,Hao Dai,Jun Peng

A novel magnetic surface ion-imprinted polymer (c-MMWCNTs-SiO2-IIP) was synthesized for the first time using magnetic CNTs/Fe3O4 composites (c-MMWCNTs) as the core, 3-ammonium propyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as the functional monomer, tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as the cross-linker and Cu(II) as the template. c-MMWCNTs-SiO2-IIP was evaluated for selective extraction of Cu(II) from herbal medicines via a magnetic solid phase extraction (M-SPE) procedure. One factor affecting the separation and preconcentration of the target heavy metal was pH. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption capacity of c-MMWCNTs-SiO2-IIP toward Cu(II) were estimated. The results indicated that the adsorption mechanism corresponds to a pseudo-second order adsorption process, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.985 and a maximum adsorption capacity of 42.2 mg g−1. The relative selectivity factor (β) values of Cu(II)/Zn(II) and Cu(II)/Pb(II) were 38.5 and 34.5, respectively. c-MMWCNTs-SiO2-IIP, combined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry, was successfully applied in the extraction and detection of Cu(II) in herbal medicine, with high recoveries ranging from 95.6% to 108.4%.

Synthesis of a new binuclear Cu(II) complex: A precise sensor for H2O2 and a proper precursor for preparation of the CuO nanoparticles

Su-Juan Wang,Fahime Bigdeli,Xiao-Wei Yan,Leili Esrafili,Kuan-Guan Liu,Hosein Ghasempour,Xiao-Qing Cai,Mao-Lin Hu,Ali Morsali

A novel binuclear Cu(II) complex based on ferrocene dicarboxylate was synthesized through ultrasonic and solvothermal processes and its structure confirmed by spectroscopy (IR), ultraviolet-visible spectrum (UV–Vis) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD). Structural characterization of the complex was performed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction and thermal stability of it was perused via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The title Cu(II) complex was used as an effective sensor for H 2 O 2 . The electrochemical method is one of the most effective methods for material sensing. In many electrochemical techniques to increase the efficiency of activity, the electrochemically active agent is supported on a substrate. Instead of using substrate, the chemical active agent can be applied as a part of the complex structure. In this work, ferrocene dicarboxylate as an active agent in the Cu(II) complex has been used for sensing of H 2 O 2 . Due to the effect of particle size on electrochemical activity, the nano-sized complex was synthesized by ultrasonic technique (as an environmentally friendly method) and also, CuO nanoparticles were also obtained by thermal decomposition of ultrasonic treated complex at 500  °C. The size and morphology of the nanoparticles were explored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As well as, they were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and elemental mapping.

Fast fabrication of micron-sized Janus particles with controlled morphology via seed-swelling photoinitiated polymerization and their application in Cu (II) ion removal

Shicong Jia,Hongwei Wang,Ruizhi Tang,Shujuan Ma,Bolin Gong,Junjie Ou

At present, most of Janus particle with different shapes were synthesized via seeded emulsion thermal-initiated polymerization. Herein, a novel and simple strategy of seed-swelling photoinitiated polymerization was proposed to fabricate Janus particles, in which noncrosslinked polystyrene seed was swelled via absorbing an oil phase consisting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as functional monomer , dipentaerythritol pentaacrylate (DPEPA) as crosslinker and different organic solvents . Several parameters such as molar ratio of monomer and crosslinker, irradiation time of UV light, the types of porogenic reagents and the composition of aqueous phase were investigated. Numerous liquid droplets merged into multiple protrusions, and further immobilized onto the surface of seed particle. Subsequently, half raspberry-like particle was finally generated with low molar ratio of monomer and crosslinker, while both dumbbell-like and egg-like Janus particles were acquired in higher molar ratio of monomer and crosslinker. These Janus particles were synthesized via “green” process owning to fast and simple characters. After modification via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and amination, the as-synthesized Janus@polyAN-TEPA was utilized in the adsorption of Cu (Ⅱ) ion and the maximum adsorption reached 132 mg g −1 . As a result, the Janus particles demonstrated excellent capacity on absorption of Cu (Ⅱ) ion, and it is promising to utilize the Janus particle in the fields of separation and enrichment.

Characterization of Waste Amidoxime Chelating Resin and Its Reutilization Performance in Adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) Ions

Chunhui Zheng,Chunlin He,Yingjie Yang,Toyohisa Fujita,Guifang Wang,Wenchao Yang

The continuous expansion of the market demand and scale of commercial amidoxime chelating resins has caused large amounts of resin to be discarded around the world. In this study, the waste amidoxime chelating resin was reutilized as an adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The physical morphology and chemical composition of the waste amidoxime chelating resin (WAC-resin) from the factory was characterized by the elemental analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the initial metal ions concentration, contact time, temperature and the solution pH on the adsorption performance of the metal ions was explored by batch experiments. It was shown that the optimal pH was 4. Kinetic studies revealed that adsorption process corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Langmuir model. At room temperature, the adsorption capacities of WAC-resin for Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+and Cd2+reached 114.6, 93.4, 24.4 and 20.7 mg/g, respectively. Keywords:waste amidoxime chelating resin;characterization;reutilization;heavy metals

Baitong Niu,Biying Yao,Meihua Zhu,Hongxu Guo,Shaoming Ying,Zhangxu Chen

A fern leave-like structure metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-47(as) has been fabricated by a simple one-pot hydrothermal reaction and characterized by a variety of means, such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-morphology analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and specific surface area and pore size distribution. The as-prepared MOFs were found to be an effective material for the selective electrochemical detection of microgram levels of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) in aqueous solution performed by differential pulse voltammetry. The electrochemical properties and applications of the modified electrode were also studied, in which operational parameters such as pH, deposition potential, and deposition time, were optimized to detect trace amounts of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) ions. The as-prepared electrode not only has good stability and repeatability, but also has good practical detection ability.

Facile synthesis of EDTA grafted 3D spherical-chain porous silica with high capacity for rapidly selective adsorption of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions

Ma Zixuan,Li Fang,Jia Aizhong,Zhang Xiao,Wang Yanji

The highly efficient adsorbents with fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity and selectivity as well as good reusability were successfully synthesized through fabricating 3D spherical-chain porous silica material and grafting modification with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for the selective removal Cu(II) from wastewater. The obtained adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, N 2 adsorption–desorption and back titration. The results indicate that the 3D framework structure is adjustable in a certain range by varying the parameters of the synthesis system. And the adsorption performance of the materials was investigated under different conditions such as pH, contact time and initial metal ions concentration. Under the experiment conditions, the synthesized adsorbent is efficient in removing Cu(II) and the adsorption equilibrium could be achieved within only 5 min, and the kinetic data are well fitted by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. The prepared adsorbents display good selective adsorption of Cu(II) and can be feasibly regenerated without evident decrease even after five recycles. Basing on the obtained results, the plausible adsorption mechanism was proposed and analyzed.

An amidoxime-functionalized polypropylene fiber: Competitive removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) from wastewater and subsequent sequestration in cement mortar

Dezhi Zhao,Zheng Wang,Shuang Lu,Xianming Shi

Eco-friendly adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater are urgently needed. This work fabricated an amidoxime-modified polypropylene (PP) fiber as a cost-effective and recyclable adsorbent to remove heavy metals. The laboratory study aimed to evaluate the competitive adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto AO-PP fiber in aqueous solutions. The adsorption isothermal data fitted the Langmuir isotherm well, and the maximum adsorption capacities (mg/g) were in the order of Cu (47.23)>Pb (45.64)>Zn (37.78) when applying the Langmuir isotherm at pH 5.0. Adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 90 min. The adsorption was pH-dependent and followed the pseudo-second-order model well. The adsorption can be explained by the coordination between N- and O-containing groups and the metallic ions. Metallic ion affinity, steric hindrance , and covalent index were the main factors affecting the competitive adsorption behavior. Regeneration experiments revealed that the obtained adsorbent maintained favorable adsorption capacity even after 20 cycles. Cement mortars incorporating the metal-adsorbed fiber exhibited improved mechanical properties and satisfactory leaching performance. This work experimentally validated the effective use of AO-PP fiber to capture heavy metals from wastewater as well as subsequent sequestration of the recycled fibers in a suitable material matrix , providing a new reference for heavy metal harvesting and final disposal.

Macromolecular humic acid modified nano-hydroxyapatite for simultaneous removal of Cu(II) and methylene blue from aqueous solution: Experimental design and adsorption study

Wei Wei,Xuan Han,Mengjia Zhang,Yong Zhang,Yong Zhang,Chunmiao Zheng

Humic acid (HA) is well-known for its chelating activity towards various contaminants, but it dissolves in water thus cannot be used alone as an adsorbent. By immobilizing HA to the surface of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP), a novel HA-nHAP adsorbent was prepared. The composition and surface morphology of the obtained HA-nHAP composite were studied in detail. Adsorptive removal of Cu(II) and Methylene blue (MB) using HA-nHAP in single and binary systems were investigated. Results indicated that HA-nHAP exhibited efficient removal of Cu(II) and MB with a favorable adsorption at higher pH. The mechanisms involved in adsorption of Cu(II) and MB were electrostatic interaction and surface complexation. Optimization study using central composite design (CCD) based response surface methodology (RSM) was performed and 3-D response surfaces were plotted from the mathematical model. The optimum conditions were found to be 2.2 g/L (adsorbent dosage), 8 h (contact time), 25 mg/L (initial Cu(II) concentration), and 85 mg/L (initial MB concentration). At optimum conditions, removal rates of Cu(II) and MB were 97.68% and 100%, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium fitted well with Elovich and Langmuir models, respectively. Desorption studies confirmed that HA-nHAP adsorbent could be effectively regenerated and reused.

Multiple active sites cellulose-based adsorbent for the removal of low-level Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) via multiple cooperative mechanisms

Qi Wu,Hui He,Hang Zhou,Fei Xue,Hongxiang Zhu,Shile Zhou,Lei Wang,Shuangfei Wang

A novel multiple active sites cellulose-based adsorbent (MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC) with a high density of multiple active adsorption sites (N, O, S) was prepared by using epichlorohydrin cross-linking microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), followed by grafting with bis(carboxymethyl) trithiocarbonate (BCTTC). It was shown that the removal rates of MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC for Pb(II) (1 mg/L), Cu(II) (3 mg/L) and Cr(VI) (1 mg/L) reached 100 %, 98 % and 99 %, respectively, and the remaining concentration after adsorption reached the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) standards for Pb(II) and Cu(II) and the China integrated wastewater discharge standard for Cr(VI). These results indicate that the high removal rate of MCC/TEPAA-BCTTC for removing anionic and cationic heavy metal ions in low-concentration mixed heavy metal ions environments was mainly due to the high density of multiple adsorption sites that act via multiple cooperative mechanisms.

Trace-Cu(II)/CaO2 pre-oxidation coupled with coagulation for algal elimination: A triple-mechanism cascade involving functional inactivation driven by Cu(III)

Dingqiang Zhang,Xiaoqun Wu,Tengchao Jiao,Weizhen Zhang,Jiahao He,Yanhua Xie,Yingming Hu,Yao Wei

Trace-Cu(II)/CaO 2 /PAC achieves > 95% algal removal in natural waters. • Pre-oxidation degrades algal extracellular matter to aid coagulation. • PAC mitigates matrix interference, indirectly maintaining oxidation. • Intracellular ROS induces functional death without severe lysis. Harmful algal blooms release microcystins and other metabolites that threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health. Conventional removal methods often induce cell lysis and are affected by matrix interference in natural waters, limiting their practical applicability. A sequential process coupling trace-Cu(II)/CaO 2 pre-oxidation with PAC coagulation was developed for efficient algal removal. The system removed 98.5% of M. aeruginosa from lake water. During the 10-min pre-oxidation stage, trace-Cu(II)/CaO 2 effectively degraded extracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and the dissolved organic matter (DOM) surrounding algal cells, thereby weakening electrostatic repulsion and enhancing coagulation efficiency. The coupled process generated Cu(III), •OH, •O 2 − , and 1 O 2 within the cells, which led to functional cell death without severe membrane rupture. Conventional molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirmed the stability of a representative pentameric cation-channel model, and steered molecular dynamics (SMD) further showed that Cu 2+ and H 2 O 2 could be guided through its pore under an applied axial bias, supporting the physical plausibility of channel-mediated intracellular access. Mechanistically, OH − generated during CaO 2 hydrolysis promoted the Cu(II)/Cu(I)/Cu(III) catalytic cycle and sustained reactive species production, with Cu(III) as the dominant contributor to functional inactivation (68.5%). These findings establish an innovative and practical strategy for the safe and effective removal of algae from contaminated natural waters. Composite adsorbents of aminated chitosan @ZIF-8 MOF for simultaneous efficient removal of Cu(II) and Congo Red: Batch experiments and DFT calculations

Xianhong Deng,Wenbin Wu,Shuangqin Tian,Yi He,Shujie Wang,Bifang Zheng,Kai Xin,Ziqin Zhou,Lihong Tang

In this study, we employed a straightforward in-situ synthesis strategy to fabricate multi-site adsorption functional composites known as aminated chitosan@ZIF-8 (AmCs@ZIF-8) for the efficient removal of Cu(II) and Congo red. The AmCs@ZIF-8 adsorbed Cu(II) at pH 5 and Congo red at pH 3 with excellent removal efficiency values of 94 % and 100 % respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Congo red are obtained as 785 mg g −1 and 1156 mg g −1 , respectively. Interestingly, AmCs@ZIF-8 composites exhibited an excellent removal efficiency (>80 %) after reusing them for four sequential cycles. Analysis of the adsorption isotherm and kinetic data indicated that chemisorption primarily governed the adsorption of Cu(II) and Congo red by AmCs@ZIF-8. Furthermore, we elucidated the adsorption energy of Cu(II) and Congo red on the AmCs@ZIF-8 composite through density functional theory. Specifically, the adsorption energy values for Cu(II) with AmCs and ZIF-8 were −20.907 and −57.809 kcal·mol −1 , and −26.514 and −16.242 kcal·mol −1 for Congo red, respectively. The efficient adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) and Congo red on the AmCs@ZIF-8 composite can be attributed to the synergistic effects of chelation, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding through the analysis of experimental characterization and theoretical calculation. Therefore, AmCs@ZIF-8 composites elevate the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Congo red in a single-component system and exhibit high removal efficiency (>90 %) in the context of the Cu(II)-Congo red binary system.

Effective fixation of Cu(II) and Cr(III) in solution by food waste biochar – Innovative and valuable treatment method for municipal solid waste

Mengxia Qing,Wenbin Liu,Liang Liu,Sibiao Huang,Zihang He,Yanshan Yin,Jun Xiang

Enhancing biochar's adsorption and solidification performance in compound-polluted aqueous solutions remains a crucial task for achieving the cost-effective removal of heavy metals from water bodies. The study examined the removal performances and mechanisms of Cu(II) and Cr(III) using biochar prepared from food waste at temperatures of 350 °C, 450 °C, and 550 °C (FWB-350, FWB-450, and FWB-550). FWB-450 exhibited the highest overall effectiveness in adsorbing Cu(II) and Cr(III), demonstrating the adsorption capacity (Q e ) of 40.283 and 21.456 mg/g in single-solution, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption process involves physical and chemical reactions involving heat absorption. The impact of Cr(III) on the adsorption of Cu(II) is more apparent in the mixed competitive system. The pH, the oxygen-functional groups and carbonate ion quantity of FWB are crucial in improving Cu(II) and Cr(III) adsorption by affect the hydrolysis, complexation, and ion exchange processes. The presence of alkaline earth metal ions in FWB, like Ca(II), aids in the elimination of Cu(II) and Cr(III) through ionic precipitation and ion exchange, correspondingly. Furthermore, FWB adsorbed with Cu(II) and Cr(III) is relatively less hazardous than solid waste. The study validates the resource utilization of FW and its potential application of biochar in heavy metal adsorption.
