Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease making patients be prone to the osteoporotic fracture. However, the clinical implants made of titanium and its alloys with a poor osseointegration need a long time for healing and easily to loosening. Thus, a new class of Cu-alloyed titanium (TiCu) alloys with excellent mechanical properties and bio-functionalization has been developed. In this study, the osteoporosis modeled rats were used to study the osteointegration effect and underlying mechanism of TiCu. The results showed that after implantation for 4 weeks, TiCu alloy could promote the reconstruction of vascular network around the implant by up-regulating vascular endothelial growth factor expression. After 8 weeks, it could further promote the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, mineralization and deposition of collagens, and then significantly increasing bone mineral density around the implant. In conclusion, TiCu alloy would enhance the fixation stability, accelerate the osteointegration, and thus reduce the risk of aseptic loosening during the long-term implantation in the osteoporosis environment. This study was the first to report the role and mechanism of a Cu-alloyed metal in promoting osteointegration in osteoporosis environment, which provides a new attractive support for the improvement of future clinical applications of Cu-alloyed antibacterial titanium alloys.Open in new tabDownload slide

Cu–CeO 2 /C composite catalysts with porous structure were prepared by a microwave-assisted carbonization–impregnation method, which demonstrated a significant performance enhancement for the selective hydrogenation of ethylene carbonate. It was shown by XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, XPS and H 2 -TPR that Cu–CeO 2 /C catalysts with appropriate copper-ceria interactions improving the dispersion of copper particles and providing a higher ratio of Cu + /(Cu + + Cu 0 ) and more oxygen vacancies on the surface. These interactions resulted in an enhanced adsorption of ethylene carbonate and a high hydrogenation activity. The effect of significant operating conditions such as reaction temperature, H 2 pressure and substrate ratio on the EC hydrogenation activity over the Cu–CeO 2 /C catalyst was also investigated to predict the optimal conditions to achieve maximum activity in this process.

Struvite recovered from wastewater can be used as a slow-release fertilizer. Nevertheless, hazardous metals easily precipitated with struvite would increase the ecological risk for its agricultural use. In this study, the influence of individual and coexistence of Cu and Zn on the precipitation of struvite was investigated. The loading of Cu and/or Zn in precipitates increased with the increase of initial metal concentrations (0.1–100 mg/L). Quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) analysis revealed that the increase of Cu and/or Zn level in reaction solution disturbed crystal growth of struvite and promoted the formation of amorphous phase(s). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the pit formation on struvite crystal surfaces, combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data, the results indicated a surface interaction for the formation of Cu-OH and Cu-NH 3 on struvite surface at Cu of 0.1–10 mg/L. With the increase of Cu to 25–100 mg/L, the precipitation of amorphous Cu phosphate(s) was confirmed by XPS and QXRD. At Zn of 0.1–10 mg/L, the enrichment of Zn-PO 4 and Zn-OH on struvite surface was observed, whereas, the precipitation of amorphous Zn hydroxide(s) was confirmed at Zn of 25–100 mg/L. At Cu and Zn co-existed solution, the decrease of Cu-PO 4 and increase of Zn-PO 4 suggested the competitive binding of PO 4 between Cu and Zn. In addition, the formation of amorphous Mg hydroxide(s) and phosphate(s) was detected regardless of the addition of Cu in solutions. The overall results revealed that the existence of Cu and Zn during struvite formation can greatly affect its content by formation of different metal-containing products.

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) has attracted enormous interest because of the energy crisis and climate change; however, more efficient catalysts are required for practical applications. Herein, we present electrospinning as a facile strategy to synthesize a three-dimensional network of carbon nanofibers embedded with Cu and CeO x nanoparticles (Cu/CeO x @CNFs) as a CO 2 RR catalyst. The Cu–CeO x interface produced using this method offers synergistic geometric and electronic effects which optimize the adsorption strength of reaction intermediates for the electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. In a flow cell configuration, a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and a CO faradaic efficiency of 59.2% can be obtained at −0.60 V vs. RHE.

Nanozymes have emerged as enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials to overcome the low stability and high cost of some natural enzymes. The design and fabrication of nanozymes with superior performance to natural enzymes are in urgent demand. Single-atom catalysts offer the unique characteristics of maximum atomic utilization, and are an excellent candidate for nanozymes. However, most of the reported synthesis methods for single-atom catalysts require the preparation of supports for single-atom catalysts in advance, which requires multiple steps and calcination in a high temperature atmosphere. Herein, Cu–N–C single-atom nanozymes (Cu–N–C SAzymes) were successfully designed via a one-pot solvothermal method. Cu–N–C SAzymes exhibited excellent peroxidase-mimicking activity that is superior to some other related nanoparticles. The mechanism study revealed that H2O2 was catalyzed by Cu–N–C SAzymes to generate reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, based on the excellent peroxidase-mimicking activity of the Cu–N–C SAzymes, a simple and sensitive detection method for H2O2 and glucose has been developed.

A room-temperature electrodeposition method with an organic electrolyte was developed to fabricate a HNO 3 -pretreated graphene paper Cu (GP′–Cu) composite. To improve the interfacial bonding of GP′–Cu composite, magnetron sputtering technology was used to create a “sandwich” structural gradient GP′–Cu composite. The selection of the intermediate transition layer metal was based on two-dimensional disregistry. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other analytical methods confirmed that the addition of an intermediate transition metal (Cr, Ni) layer reduced the gap distance and enhanced the interfacial bonding of the GP′ and Cu deposited layers. The GP′–Ni–Cu composite exhibited the largest increase in tensile strength and conductivity. In addition, it had the highest thermal diffusivity and elongation at break among the GP′–Cu, GP′–Cr–Cu and GP′–Ni–Cu composites.

Selenium sulfide (SeS2) features higher electronic conductivity than sulfur and higher theoretical capacity and lower cost than selenium, attracting considerable interest in energy storage field. Although nonaqueous Li/Na/K-SeS2 batteries are attractive for their high energy density, the notorious shuttle effect of polysulfides/polyselenides and the intrinsic limitations of organic electrolyte have hindered the deployment of this technology. To circumvent these issues, here we design an aqueous Cu-SeS2 battery by encapsulating SeS2 in a defect-enriched nitrogen-doped porous carbon monolith. Except the intrinsic synergistic effect between Se and S in SeS2, the porous structure of carbon matrix has sufficient internal voids to buffer the volume change of SeS2 and provides abundant pathways for both electrons and ions. In addition, the synergistic effect of nitrogen doping and topological defect not only enhances the chemical affinity between reactants and carbon matrix but also offers catalytic active sites for electrochemical reactions. Benefiting from these merits, the Cu-SeS2 battery delivers superior initial reversible capacity of 1,905.1 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and outstanding long-span cycling performance over 1,000 cycles at 5 A g−1. This work applies variable valence charge carriers to aqueous metal–SeS2 batteries, providing valuable inspiration for the construction of metal–chalcogen batteries.

Motivated by the high performance of intermetallic compounds with their ordered structures, developing synthetic methods for preparing intermetallic compounds is highly desired. Herein, we report facile syntheses and rational design of the structurally ordered Cu-based intermetallic compounds (CuM (M = Pt, Pd, Au)). To achieve this, intermetallic nanoparticles were synthesized in solution by a butyllithium co-reduction method at 240 °C. The developed wet-chemistry syntheses of ordered intermetallic CuM nanoparticles avoided solid annealing process, and thus relatively small intermetallic nanocrystals were formed. The ordered PtCu nanocatalysts displayed enhanced chemoselectivity relative to the PtCu solid-solution alloy and individual monometallic nanocatalysts for catalytic hydrogenations of a series of substituted nitroaromatics. The DFT-based theoretical calculations for hydrogenations of halonitrobenzenes suggest that the surface geometry of ordered PtCu structures favor the hydrogenation of nitro substituent and disfavor the hydrodechlorination by-reaction, resulting in enhanced chemoselectivity.

In this work, Molybdenum trioxide and conventional copper particles were used as precursors, reduced in hydrogen atmosphere. Then Cu@Mo Powders were successfully synthesized. Effects of reduction temperature on the microstructure of the composite powders and the performance of the intermediate product (molybdenum dioxide) were investigated. Results show that 700°C is the optimal reduction temperature, because Mo is reduced from its oxide and forms a coating layer on the surface of copper particles tightly without serious crack. Mo-20wt.% Cu composite powders where Cu is coated uniformly with continuous molybdenum layer are successfully obtained by co-reduction method.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of functional porous materials with the potential applications in gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, energy storage, sensor, and electrical conductivity . However, the insulating nature of the mostly MOFs limits their application in the electronic field. A new three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework composed of Cu 2+ centres and polyacid linkers (TATAB 3− ) was synthesized by solvothermal method , which contains two types of Cu 24 cages. The crystal structure is cubic and each Cu is coordinated by five oxygen atoms which can be confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra and TGA analysis. The conductivity for this 3D MOF is increased by four orders of magnitude after doping with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and realizes the transformation from an insulator to semiconductor.

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) are potentially useful in tumor theranostics, but the poor stability, high toxicity, and rapid removal by the immune system seriously limit their theranostic applications. In our study, we demonstrate the fabrication of Cu(II)-doped polydopamine-coated AuNR (AuNR@CuPDA), which significantly improves the potentials in tumor theranostics. Besides the improvement of physiological stability and biocompatibility, the PDA shell increases the photothermal performance and prolongs the blood circulation time of AuNRs. The half-life of AuNRs during blood circulation increases from 0.7 to 4.5 h after PDA coating, and the injected dose per gram of tumor tissue is 4.6% ID g–1 for AuNR@CuPDA. In addition to computer tomography imaging, the loading of Cu(II) in PDA shell endows AuNR@CuPDA with magnetic resonance imaging function. Cu(II) doped in PDA shell also exhibits chemotherapeutic behavior, and the tumor inhibitor rate is 31.2%. Further combining 808 nm laser-driven photothermal therapy, tumors were completely ablated, and no recurrence was observed. Liver and renal functions tests and histological analysis of major organs confirm that AuNR@CuPDA is in good safety.

The colorimetric sensor has made great achievements in glucose sensing and diabetes prediction due to its simplicity, visualization, and lack of need for sophisticated instruments. The noninvasive sampling method has received more attention. Herein, a colorimetric agarose gel sensor was constructed by combining Cu-doped carbon nanowires (CuCNWs) with excellent peroxidase-like activity and glucose oxidase (GOx). CuCNWs can effectively catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with a maximum catalytic rate of 12.5 × 10–8 M s–1, which is superior to most nanomaterials reported. The modification by PVP can significantly improve the stability of CuCNWs under physiological conditions without affecting their catalytic activity. By introducing GOx, the sensitive detections of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose in a wide range with the limit of detection as low as 30 nM and 0.2 μM can be achieved. Notably, the colorimetric agarose gel sensor exhibits a higher sensitivity than commercial test strips in detecting glucose in solution. Furthermore, it was applied to the detection of urine glucose. Diabetic urine can be easily distinguished from normal urine by judging color changes with the naked eye. This work is of great significance in guiding the construction of colorimetric agarose gel sensors and expands the applications of nanozymes in the biosensing fields.
