In this study, a novel mesoporous nanocellulose/sodium alginate (SA)/carboxymethyl-chitosan (CMC) aerogel was fabricated using a simple method. The adsorption of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ on the aerogel in aqueous solutions was investigated. The obtained aerogel was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission microscope, atomic force microscopy and N 2 adsorption–desorption. Furthermore, the fundamental Cu 2+ and Pb 2+c adsorption behaviours of the mesoporous aerogel, including the effect of pH, adsorption equilibrium and kinetics were investigated. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of aerogel closely followed the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively, indicating that the adsorption behaviours can be classified as monolayer chemical adsorption. The aerogel exhibited high efficiency for the adsorption of Cu 2+ (169.94 mg/g) and Pb 2+ (472.59 mg/g). The aerogel maintained a high adsorption capacity for Cu 2+ (56 mg/g) and Pb 2+ (245 mg/g) after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Therefore, the as-prepared mesoporous aerogel has great potential in wastewater treatment.

A novel composite (CDs@ZIF-8) based on carbon dots (CDs) and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) was successfully synthesized by encapsulating CDs into the pores of ZIF-8 through a simple one-pot solvothermal method. The as-synthesized CDs@ZIF-8 inherited simultaneously the strong adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 and the excellent optical properties of CDs. The composite exhibited excellent dispersibility and high structural and fluorescence stability in aqueous solution, which could be employed as an excellent turn-off mode fluorescent probe to detect Cu2+. The large specific surface area and strong adsorption properties of ZIF-8 enabled the resultant composite to effectively enrich Cu2+ for further improving the analytical sensitivity. The possible fluorescence quenching mechanism has also been discussed in detail and it was found that the effective fluorescence quenching of Cu2+ to CDs@ZIF-8 could be attributed to the strong ability of Cu2+ to combine with the carboxyl group or amino group on the CD surface and the strong adsorption capacity of ZIF-8; their synergistic effect resulted in effective fluorescence quenching.

In this study, a facile synthesis of two ionized carbon dots (CDs-2 and CDs-3) is reported, in which different ionic pairs are formed at the surface of the carbon core. In contrast to CDs-3, the accumulation of carbon core can be clearly observed in the TEM image of CDs-2. This is due to the linkage of the dibromine alkyl group. Compared with naked CDs in the absence of the ionic pair, the maximum emission wavelength undergoes a red-shift of nearly 60 nm. Moreover, protic solvents (water, ethanol and N,N′-dimethyl formamide) have an apparent effect on the emission intensities of CDs-2 and CDs-3. The time-resolved average lifetimes of CDs-2 and CDs-3 are calculated as 56.34 ns and 54.50 ns, respectively. Furthermore, they both have much better fluorescence stability in the solution with pH ranging from 2 to 11 due to the presence of the imidazolium cation. It is interesting to see that CDs-2 and CDs-3 have much different responses towards Cu2+ and Fe2+. The CDs-3 solution generates clear fluorescence quenching when treated with Fe2+. In brief, we believe that these findings can inspire more research developments in the synthesis and further application of functional CDs.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots were synthesized using citric acid monohydrate and glutathione as raw materials. The synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon dots were characterized by multiple analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence intensity of the nitrogen-doped carbon dots gradually quenched with different concentrations of Cu2+ ions. The effect of the pH value, the nitrogen-doped carbon dot concentration, and the reaction time on the fluorescence intensity of the N-CDs-Cu2+ system was investigated, and the experimental conditions were optimized. A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of Cu2+ ions was established that exhibited a good linearity in the concentration range 0.20–200.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.27 nM. Meanwhile, the fluorescence quenching mechanism of the interaction between nitrogen-doped carbon dots and Cu2+ was preliminarily discussed. The method was used to detect trace Cu2+ in tap water and lake water, with recoveries ranging from 98.1% to 102.0%. Furthermore, due to low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, nitrogen-doped carbon dots as a probe were also successfully used in bioimaging.

Development of optical probe for the detections of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ is one of the most active and interesting research directions in analytical chemistry because of their vital roles in the environment protection and human health. Herein, a turn on optical rhodamine B-based probe (probe 1) with the significant changes in color and fluorescence has been prepared. The color of this probe solution changed from colorless to amaranth in the presence of Fe 3+ and to pink in the presence of Cu 2+ , which is promising for the qualitative recognition of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ . More importantly, probe 1 could be used for the quantitative analysis of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ by fluorescence enhancement. The detection limits for Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ reached 8.1 × 10 −8 M and 4.8 × 10 −7 M, respectively. Furthermore, it was found that this probe can also be used for fluorescence imaging of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ in living cells.

In this study, the impact of Cu 2+ on the formation of iodo-trihalomethanes (I-THMs) during chlorination and chloramination of iodide-containing waters was investigated. Initially, the oxidant consumption and evolution of hypoiodous acid (HOI) were determined during disinfection in the presence of Cu 2+ and the interaction between natural organic matter humic acid (HA) and Cu 2+ was also analyzed. Subsequently, the formation of the I-THMs at various Cu 2+ concentrations was evaluated for chlorination and chloramination. Moreover, in order to explore the possible underlying mechanisms, five model compounds based on the HA structure were used to investigate the I-THMs formation with and without Cu 2+ during disinfection. The results indicated that the presence of Cu 2+ markedly affected the conformation of the HA rather than the HOI evolution during disinfection. The concentration of the I-THMs decreased from 34.5 ± 0.8 to 20.9 ± 0.8 nM as the Cu 2+ concentration increased from 0 to 20 μM during chlorination. In contrast, during chloramination, the total I-THMs concentration decreased from 320.7 ± 7.4 to 267.2 ± 10.7 nM as the Cu 2+ concentration increased from 0 to 5 μM and then increased to 315.0 ± 1.7 nM when the Cu 2+ concentration reached 20 μM. The disinfection experiments with the model compounds suggested that the impact of Cu 2+ on the I-THMs formation largely depended on the organic structures in the HA, thus leading to different results during chlorination and chloramination.

A novel method was established for the ratiometric fluorescence detection of Cu 2+ and glutathione (GSH) by carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and it was fabricated through one-pot facile hydrothermal treatment using o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and citric acid as precursors. Based on the selective oxidation reaction of OPD with Cu 2+ , the detection strategy of Cu 2+ was proposed using ratiometric fluorescence probe. The oxidation production (2,3-diaminophenazine) of OPD, obtained through the oxidation reaction of OPD and Cu 2+ , not only emerged a new emission peak at 562 nm, but also quenched the fluorescence of CQDs with maximum emission at 446 nm. The mechanism was Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between CQDs and 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD). Furthermore, the oxidation reaction between Cu 2+ and OPD could be inhibited when added GSH into the solution, which could prevent the fluorescence of CQDs being quenched. The sensing system showed high sensitivity toward Cu 2+ and GSH in a range of 0.25–10.0 μmol L −1 and 1.0–80.0 μmol L −1 with a detection limit 0.076 μmol L −1 and 0.30 μmol L −1 , respectively. Besides, the proposed method could apply to efficient quantification of Cu 2+ and GSH in practical samples.

A type I core/shell structured Bi2S3@ZnS photocatalyst was synthesized by an electrostatic interaction mechanism and used for the photoelectrochemical detection of Cu2+. The Bi2S3@ZnS composite showed excellent photoelectrochemical activity and stability due to the high photoelectrochemical activity of Bi2S3 and the anti-photocorrosion function of the ZnS shell. In addition, the ZnS shell also provided a transfer platform for the photogenerated holes through its acceptor states (i.e. VZn and IS) and suppressed the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The photocurrent signal of the obtained Bi2S3@ZnS/ITO electrode was much higher than that of pure Bi2S3 under visible-light irradiation. When it was used for the photoelectrochemical sensing of Cu2+, a wide detection range (0.003–30.0 μM) and a low detection limit (0.001 μM) were observed. The sensor also displayed high stability and acceptable selectivity. It was applied to detect real samples and good results were achieved.

Herein, a dual-emission metal-organic framework based ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe was reported for detecting copper(II) ions. In particular, carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were embedded into ZIF-8 (one of the classical metal-organic frameworks) to form CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites, which exhibited dual-emission peaks at UV excitation. In the presence of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence attributed to AuNCs can be rapidly quenched, while the fluorescence of CDs serves as reference with undetectable changes. Therefore, the CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites were utilized as a ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe for sensitive and selective detection of Cu 2+ . A good linear relationship between the ratiometric fluorescence signal of CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 and Cu 2+ concentration was obtained in the range of 10 −3 –10 3 μM, and the detection limit was as low as 0.3324 nM. The current ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe showed promising prospects in cost-effective and rapid determination of Cu 2+ ions with good sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, this nanoprobe has been successfully applied for the quantitative detection of Cu 2+ in serum samples, indicating its value of practical application.
Carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were embedded into metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) to form CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8 nanocomposites, which exhibited dual-emission peaks at 365 nm excitation. In the presence of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence emission peak at 574 nm can rapidly respond by quenching, while the fluorescence at 462 nm serves as reference with undetectable changes.

Papain-stabilized gold nanoclusters ( [email protected] ) with a red fluorescence emission at 639 nm have been generated successfully in aqueous solution. The fluorescence of [email protected] could be quenched in the addition of Cu 2+ . Subsequently, a unique fluorescent probe based on [email protected] 2+ complex has been constructed for sensitive, selective and “turn-on” detection of D-penicillamine (D-pen). The sensing probe has exhibited a remarkable fluorescence enhancement in the presence of D-pen, which can be measured ranging from 30.0 μM to 2.0 mM (r 2 = 0.991) with the detection limit of 5.0 μM. Furthermore, the developed assay has been utilized to explore the metabolic process of D-pen in rats after intraperitoneal injection. As far as we concerned, the present study has reported the first analytical method for sensing serum D-pen in real time by using the fluorescent [email protected] 2+ complex. Our strategy paves a way for digging up the biological and clinical application of the fluorescent AuNCs.

A novel fluorescent probe based 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) has been designed and synthesized. The probe 1 exhibits fast relay recognition performance for Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ via a fluorescence “on−off−on” response signal. The probe 1 itself has a strong emission peak at 471 nm in EtOH/H 2 O (v/v = 1:9) solution with a blue fluorescence. The addition of Cu 2+ immediately results in the quenching of fluorescence and the limit of detection is 2.7 × 10 −8 M. Moreover, the formation of [1-Cu 2+ ] complexes can also serve as a new efficient probe system for the relay recognition of Cd 2+ with the emergence of a new fluorescence signal under the same conditions. The study also found that the probe 1 has high selectivity for target ions in the presence of other competing ions. The probe 1 has been successfully applied to detect and analyze the trace amount of Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ in environmental water samples.

A novel dual site controlled probe has been developed on the basis of rhodamine and biphenylcarbonitrile unit. The probe showed not only rapid fluorescence response to pH, but also good colorimetric recognition performance for copper ions in the HEPES buffer solution (pH 7.0). The optimal geometric configuration of the probe RhB-H with different structures and the [RhB-H-Cu 2+ ] complex were calculated at B3LYP level by DFT method. On this basis, the response mechanism of pH was analysed combining with the 1 H NMR titration experiment. Moreover, the cytotoxicity studies indicated that the probe had good biocompatibility and low toxicity. Then the probe was also successfully applied on real-time monitoring of the intracellular pH changes by exhibiting different fluorescence and emission intensity. These results demonstrated that the probe could be usefully involved in biological and biomedical research.
