Biochar (BC) usually has abundant surface functional groups, well-developed pore structures and high specific surface areas, which can combine with transition metals for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade organics. In this paper, BC modified with Cu/CuO was prepared by a modified impregnation pyrolysis method using peanut shells as raw materials. The morphology, structure and physicochemical properties were analyzed. Results showed that the originally smooth BC surface was modified into a rough structure with distributed metal particles, and the specific surface area of the modified Cu/CuO-BC700 (i.e., Cu/CuO-BC) increased from the initial 22.57 to 192.64 m2/g. The Cu/CuO-BC was employed for PMS activation and tetracycline (TC) degradation, achieving a removal efficiency of 93.2% at TC initial concentration 20 mg/L, PMS concentration 0.5 mM and catalyst dosage 0.1 g/L after 30 min. The influence of co-existing anions in the actual water on TC degradation followed the order of HCO3−> H2PO4−> Cl−, and HA had an inhibitory effect on TC degradation. A variety of active species participated in TC degradation, and the free radical pathway played a dominant role. Furthermore, the Cu/CuO-BC could maintain the degradation efficiency of TC up to 80% even after five consecutive cycles. The Cu/CuO-BC maintained high activity through redox reactions between catalytically generated active species and the cycling of metal ions (Cu+/Cu2+).Keywords:Cu/CuO;modified biochar;peroxymonosulfate;active species;tetracycline

A series of MoS 2 -modified CuO (CuO/MoS 2 ) heterostructures were successfully fabricated. The photodegradation properties of organic dyes were explored in detail under visible light. The photocatalytic results demonstrate that the CuO/MoS 2 -3 heterostructure delivers superior degradation rates towards methyl violet dye (MV) and rhodamine B (RhB), reaching 99.8% and 95.3% within 30 min, respectively. The decent photodegradation activity is due to improved visible light adsorption and faster transfer of electron-hole pairs. The radical trapping experiments show that superoxide radicals (· O 2 - ) and holes (h + ) are the main active species in the removal of MV. Furthermore, the CuO/MoS 2 -3 composite possesses the prominent stability and recyclability. This work offers a highly sustainable technique for designing a high-efficiency photocatalyst to remove environmental pollutants.

Design and development of high-effective photocatalysts to remove multiple organic pollutants are a great challenge. Herein, the band structure of CuO is regulated by constructing the heterostructures between AgBr and CuO, which is realized by controlling hybrid morphologies. The as-prepared AgBr/CuO material consists of CuO nanoflakes and AgBr nanoparticles. Notably, AgBr nanoparticles are adhering on the surface of CuO nanosheets, which favors the formation of heterojunction with point to plane contact and fasten electron transfer. The photocatalytic results show that the AgBr/CuO photocatalyst, prepared by using the 0.1 mol AgNO 3 and KBr as raw materials, presents superior photodegradation activity toward degradation of multi-pollutants with dye concentration of 15 mg L −1 and pH = 7. The methyl violet removal rate reaches 98% within 60 min in the present of 0.1 g catalyst under visible light, and rhodamine B and methyl blue are degraded to 98 and 78% within 90 min. The radical trapping tests prove that photogenerated superoxide radicals (∙O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) act as the main active species in photodegradation of MV. The result indicates that point to plane-contacted heterostructure of AgBr/CuO material plays a key role and it has potential application in the environment remediation. Graphical abstract

Electrocatalytic reduction is a promising strategy for CO 2 utilization, while the conversion of CO 2 to C 2 products usually suffers from the low selectivity. Herein, we report several high-performance Cu-OCN catalysts for electroreduction CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 , which are prepared through the in-situ calcination of nanocube Cu 2 O and urea. The highest C 2 H 4 faradaic efficiency from Cu-OCN-10 reaches 55.97%, much higher than that from the pristine CuO counterpart (38.31%), with a partial current density of −12.83 mA cm −2 . Catalyst characterizations and first-principles density functional theory calculations reveal that the superior performance of CuO-OCN is attributed to the introduced nitrogen (N) species and oxygen (O)-vacancies. With the assistance of N species and O-vacancies, the adsorption of CO 2 on Cu-OCN-10 is thermodynamically favorable with the absorption energy of −0.69 eV. Meanwhile, the activation of CO 2 is promoted and the generated *CO intermediate on Cu-OCN-10 is stable, whose release needs to overcome an energy of 2.26 eV, thereby enhancing the C C coupling to produce C 2 H 4 . In general, the synergistic effects of N species and O-vacancies in Cu-OCN catalysts facilitate CO 2 electroreduction to C 2 H 4 .

A series of supported CuO-based nanoparticle catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method and used for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol and CO2in the presence of 2-cyanopyridine as a dehydrant and DMF as a solvent. The effects of supports (activated alumina, silicon dioxide, graphene oxide, graphene, and activated carbon), CuO loading amount, calcination temperature, and reaction parameters on the catalytic activity of the catalyst were investigated in detail. XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, and CO2-TPD were used for the characterization of the prepared catalysts. It is found that CuO/Al2O3shows a higher catalytic activity, which depends on the CuO loading amount and calcination temperature. The surface area and number of basic sites of the catalyst exhibit a crucial effect on the catalytic activity of CuO/Al2O3. Furthermore, there is a synergistic effect between the catalyst and 2-cyanopyridine where the former has a higher activation ability for glycerol and the latter acts not only as a dehydrant, but also as a promoter for CO2activation. Recycling experiments reveal that this catalyst can be reused for at least five cycles without any inactivation. Based on the experiment results and FTIR characterization, a possible reaction mechanism for the carbonylation of glycerol and CO2is proposed. Keywords:glycerol;glycerol carbonate;carbon dioxide;2-cyanopyridine;CuO/Al2O3

The application of heterogeneous catalysts in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis from methanol is hindered by low activation efficiency of methanol to methoxy intermediates (CH 3 O*), which is the key intermediate for DMC generation. Herein, a catalyst of alkali metal K anchored on the CuO/ZnO oxide is rationally designed for offering Lewis acid–base pairs as dual active centers to improve the activation efficiency of methanol. Characterizations of CO 2 -TPD, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, and DRIFTS revealed that the addition of Lewis base K observably boosted the dissociation of methanol and combined with Lewis acid CuO/ZnO oxide to adsorb the formed CH 3 O* stably, thus synergistically promoted the transesterification. Finally, the CuO/ZnO-9%K 2 O catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic activity, achieving a high yield of 74.4% with an excellent selectivity of 98.9% for DMC at a low temperature of 90°C. The strategy of constructing Lewis acid–base pairs provides a reference for the design of heterogeneous catalysts.

Biological approaches for the synthesis of a hybrid explosive–nanothermite energetic composite have attracted greater scientific attention because of their advantages, including their moderate reactions and the absence of secondary pollution. In this study, a simple technique was developed to fabricate a hybrid explosive–nanothermite energetic composite based on a peptide and a mussel-inspired surface modification. Polydopamine (PDA) was easily imprinted onto the HMX, where it maintained its reactivity and was capable of reacting with a specific peptide used to introduce Al and CuO NPs to the surface of the HMX via specific recognition. The hybrid explosive–nanothermite energetic composites were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and a fluorescence microscope. A thermal analysis was utilized to investigate the energy-release properties of the materials. The[email protected]@CuO, which benefitted from an enhanced interfacial contact in comparison with the physically mixed sample (HMX-Al-CuO), demonstrated a 41% lower HMX activation energy. Keywords:biological self-assembly;polydopamine;peptide;green preparation;activation energy

Transition metal oxides are said to have the ability to enhance the gravimetric capacity of lithium-ion batteries by two or three times that of current state-of-the-art graphite anodes. Recent reports have demonstrated that the combined utilization of structural architecture and surface modification is an attractive strategy to improve lithium storage capability. In this study, novel CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes were prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition of Cu-Zn alloy films on a removable sacrificial substrate, followed by a facile thermal oxidation treatment and Al 2 O 3 coating procedure by particle atomic layer deposition. They combine the advantages of CuO-ZnO submicroflakes, such as high lithium storage capability and fast lithium ion transportation, and Al 2 O 3 nano-coating with effective protection of the electrode interface during cycling. When utilized as anode materials for LIBs, the CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes exhibit superior specific capacity, enhanced cycling stability, and outstanding rate capability compared with pristine CuO-ZnO submicroflakes, commercial CuO and ZnO powders. The CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes electrodes deliver a high reversible capacity of 814 mAh g −1 at a current density of 50 mA g −1 , and still maintain a moderate capacity of 447 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 . Pairing with a commercial LiFePO 4 cathode, full cell shows high capacity retention and stable cycling performance, suggesting the feasibility of the CuO-ZnO@Al 2 O 3 submicroflakes in practical energy storage applications. In addition, our findings also provide a clear proof-of-concept of the surface coating technique, which might be applied widely to other materials and devices where nano-coating produces desirable properties.

Magnetic CuO nanosheet (Mag-CuO), as a cheap, stable, efficient and easily separated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, was prepared by a simple one-step precipitation method for the removal of organic compounds from salt-containing wastewater. The experiments showed that the removal efficiencies of various organic pollutants including Acid Orange 7, Methylene Blue , Rhodamine B and atrazine in a high-salinity system (0.2 mol/L Na 2 SO 4 ) with the Mag-CuO/PMS process were 95.81%, 74.57%, 100% and 100%, respectively. Meanwhile, Mag-CuO still maintained excellent catalytic activity in other salt systems including one or more salt components (NaCl, NaNO 3 , Na 2 HPO 4 , NaHCO 3 ). A radical-quenching study and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominant reactive oxygen species for the oxidation of organic pollutants in high-salinity systems, which is less susceptible to hindrance by background constituents in wastewater than radicals ( • OH or SO 4 •− ). The surface hydroxylation of the catalyst and catalytic redox cycle including Cu and Fe are responsible for the generation of 1 O 2 . The developed Mag-CuO catalyst shows good application prospects for the removal of organic pollutants from saline wastewater.

A copper oxide (CuO) doped alumina ceramic hollow fiber membrane was fabricated via combined phase-inversion and liquid-phase sintering technique at low sintering temperature , with the purpose to enhance the flexural strength and reduce the preparation cost. The effect of CuO contents on the microstructure and properties of the ceramic hollow fiber membrane was systematically investigated. The results showed that the 3 wt% CuO doped ceramic hollow fiber membrane sintered at 1250 °C for 2 h displayed a maximum flexural strength (116.78 MPa), which was more than 3 times higher than that of control membrane without CuO addition. The 3 wt% CuO doped ceramic hollow fiber membrane exhibited a porosity of 34.6%, mean pore size of 700 nm and pure water flux of 1255 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Furthermore, the catalytic performance of CuO doped ceramic hollow fiber membrane was investigated. With RhB as a model compound, it was shown that as high as 81.5% of degradation efficiency could be achieved by the 3 wt% CuO doped membrane in the combined peroxymonosulfate/membrane filtration system within 60 min. The CuO doped ceramic hollow fiber membrane displayed an excellent reusability in multicycle catalytic experiment and superior catalytic performance for various refractory organic pollutants .

Two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposites, based on graphene and transition metal oxides , hold great promise as high-performance electrode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a novel 2D CuO/RGO has been constructed by CuO ultrathin nanosheets and reduced graphene oxides (RGO) through in-situ oxidizing the Cu/RGO nanocomposite with hydrogen peroxide. CuO nanosheets with a thickness of 1.17–1.57 nm are uniformly and tightly anchored on the RGO surface without aggregation and thus the as-prepared CuO/RGO nanosheets electrode show strong interfacial coupling and fast electron transfer . Electrochemical characterizations reveal that the CuO/RGO nanocomposite electrode exhibits a remarkably enhanced cycling performance and rate performance. At the current density of 0.1C, the initial discharge capacity of 811 mAh/g has been delivered by CuO/RGO nanosheets electrode and the coulombic efficiency maintains 99.44% after 100 cycles. Moreover, the CuO/RGO nanosheets exhibit a stable specific capacity of 386 mAh/g after 200 cycles at 3C. In addition, the as-prepared CuO/RGO nanocomposite electrode exhibited excellent rate performance and lower charge transfer resistance. CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 nanoparticles used as a heterogeneous catalyst were prepared via a sol-gel method and characterized by various techniques. For comparison, a series of oxides was investigated for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) during the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The results indicated that CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 exhibited the highest catalytic performance among the catalysts. Complete degradation of 2,4-D (20 mg/L) was realized within 45 min at 1 mM PMS, CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 loading of 0.07 g/L, and pH of 6. Recycling experiments confirmed that CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 was very stable, and the 2,4-D degradation efficiencies ranged from 100% to 97.5%, decreasing by only 2.5% after the fifth run. The outstanding catalysis of CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 resulted from the synergy of cerium, cobalt, and copper. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger experiments confirmed the production of SO 4 • − and • OH radicals in the CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 /PMS system, which were responsible for efficient decomposition of 2,4-D. Furthermore, the combination of CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 andPMS was applied to treat natural water containing 2,4-D, and a high 2,4-D removal rate was also achieved. Based on these results, it was deduced that CuO-Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 can be utilized as a catalyst to activate PMS and destroy organic contaminants in aqueous solution.
