Acid chrome blue K (ACBK) was electropolymerized on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by cyclic voltammetric sweep in the potential range from –0.2 to 0.9 V. The characteristic of poly-ACBK film was studied by different methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry. This modified electrode showed excellent electrocatalytic response to curcumin with the increase of the electrochemical responses. Under the optimal conditions a good linear voltammetric response could be obtained over the range of 1.0 × 10 −7 -7.0 × 10 −5 M and the detection limit was got as 4.1 × 10 −8 M (S/N = 3). The method was successfully applied for the determination of curcumin in human urinev samples.

This study aimed to optimize and evaluate a thermoresponsive ophthalmic in situ gel containing curcumin-loaded albumin nanoparticles (Cur-BSA-NPs-Gel). Albumin nanoparticles were prepared via a desolvation method, and the gels were prepared via a cold method. The central composite design and response surface method was used to evaluate the effects of varying Pluronic ® F127 and Pluronic ® F68 concentrations on the sol–gel transition temperature, which is an indicator of optimum formulations. The optimized formulation was a free-flowing liquid below 30.9°C that transformed into a semi-solid gel above 34.2°C after dilution with simulated tear fluid. Results of the in vitro release and erosion behavior study indicated that Cur-BSA-NPs-Gel achieved superior sustained-release effects and that incorporation of albumin nanoparticles exerted minimal effects on the gel structure. In addition, in vivo ophthalmic experiments employing Cur-BSA-NPs-Gel were subsequently performed in rabbits. In vivo eye irritation results showed that Cur-BSA-NPs-Gel might be considered safe for ophthalmic drug delivery. The in vivo study also revealed that the formulation could significantly increase curcumin bioavailability in the aqueous humor. In conclusion, the optimized in situ gel formulation developed in this work has significant potential for ocular application.

Adding antioxidant is one of the most effective ways to prevent oil systems from oxidation. Curcumin (Cur) and its derivatives have a significant antioxidant activity as potential antioxidants. In this work, the oxidative stability of fish oil treated with three different concentrations (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mg/g) of Cur, its two synthetic analogues (compounds 14 and 25 ) and α-tocopherol (positive control) are determined after 70 days at 4 and 25 °C. The antioxidants are evaluated by acid (AV), peroxide (PV), conjugated diene (CD) values, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) as well as polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in fish oil. Results show that Cur and α-tocopherol could protect fish oil from oxidation more effectively than compound 14 and 25 at 4 °C, whereas compound 14 and 25 could protect fish oil from oxidation more effectively than Cur and α-tocopherol at 25 °C. Temperature is an important factor on lipid oxidation in the process of fish oil storage resulted from antioxidant activity of compounds determined by temperature. Curcumin shows the decreased ability to protect fish oil from oxidation with increasing temperature. Compounds 14 and 25 show increasing ability to protect fish oil from oxidation with increasing temperature. Practical applications: Compounds 14 and 25 are potential antioxidants to extend expiration date of the fish oil product. Temperature is a key variable for fish oil storage. Compounds 14 and 25 show higher biological stability than that of Curcumin. In long-term storage at 25 °C, compounds 14 and 25 perform better antioxidant activity in fish oil than Curcumin, and tocopherol.

Topical delivery of therapeutics on the skin can effectively alleviate skin symptoms of psoriasis and reduce systemic toxicity. However, the low delivery efficiency caused by the stratum corneum barrier limits the therapeutic impact. Here, we reported an oligopeptide hydrogel that encapsulates cell-penetrating-peptide (CPP)-decorated curcumin-loaded nanoemulsions (Cur-CNEs) to enhance the skin penetration of curcumin for topical treatment of psoriasis. After being applied to the skin of psoriatic mice, the Cur-CNE embedded oligopeptide hydrogel (Cur-CNEs/Gel) provided a prolonged residue time of Cur-CNEs on the skin lesion. The fluidic and elastic properties of the nanoemulsions enabled them to effectively pass through the interstitial spaces of the stratum corneum, while the CPP decoration further enhanced skin penetration and cellular uptake of Cur-CNEs. The Cur-CNEs/Gel exhibits effective alleviation of the symptoms of psoriasis in mice and provides a promising strategy for topical treatment of psoriasis.

In this work, g-C 3 N 4 of N-rich vacancy (CNNV) and mesoporous SiO 2 were synthesized. A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for curcumin (Cur) based on CNNV@SiO 2 and Ti 2 AlC was constructed. An initial ECL signal was generated from the CNNV-S 2 O 8 2 − system. SiO 2 significantly adsorbed more S 2 O 8 2 − , thereby enhancing the ECL signal. Ti 2 AlC served as an effective co-reaction promoter, further amplifying the ECL signal of CNNV@SiO 2 -S 2 O 8 2 − system. With the addition of Cur, the ECL signal also decreased, which can be attributed to the resonance energy transfer (RET) mechanism between CNNV (donor) and Cur (acceptor). Under optimal conditions, a strong linear relationship was observed between the change in ECL signal (ΔI) and the logarithm of Cur concentration (lgC Cur ), spanning from 5 × 10 −15 to 5 × 10 −9 mol L −1 with a detection limit of 1.7 × 10 −15 mol L −1 . The constructed ECL sensor was successfully applied to detect Cur in real samples.

Bacterial infections and their increasing resistance to antibiotics pose a significant challenge in medical treatment. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of novel carbon dots (CDs) using levofloxacin (Lf), curcumin (Cur), and tea polyphenols (TP) through a facile hydrothermal method. The synthesized curcumin-tea polyphenol@carbon dots (Cur-TP@CDs) and levofloxacin-tea polyphenol@carbon dots (Lf-TP@CDs) were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy, confirming their unique structural and chemical properties. Cur-TP@CDs exhibited an average particle size of 1.32 nanometers (nm), while Lf-TP@CDs averaged 1.58 nm. Both types demonstrated significant antibacterial activity, with Lf-TP@CDs showing superior effectiveness againstStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) andEscherichia coli(E. coli) in broth dilution and disc diffusion assays. Biofilm inhibition assays revealed a significant reduction in biofilm formation at higher concentrations. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectral analyses indicated efficient photon emission, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis showed increased singlet oxygen generation, enhancing bactericidal effects. Live and dead bacterial staining followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed dose-dependent bacterial cell damage and morphological deformities. These findings suggest that Cur-TP@CDs and Lf-TP@CDs are promising antibacterial agents, potentially offering a novel approach to combat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

Curcumin (CUR) is found to exhibit a broad spectrum of potentially beneficial biological activities, which make it suitable as a nutraceutical ingredient in functional foods and supplements. But its application for this purpose is often limited by its low water-solubility, chemical stability, and bioavailability. In this study, acid-treated soybean protein isolate (SPI) and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS) were used to assemble colloidal carriers for CUR to form soybean protein isolate-curcumin-chitosan quaternary ammonium salt nanoparticles (SPI-CUR-CQAS NPs). The nanoparticles formed were relatively small (< 400 nm), approximately spherical, and strongly positively charged (> 45 mV). Fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrated that the dominant interaction between CUR and SPI was hydrophobic attraction, while the dominant interaction between CQAS and SPI was electrostatic attraction. The encapsulation efficiency (95.4%) and loading capacity (14%) of the SPI-CUR-CQAS NPs (pH 1.5) were relatively high. The vitro digestion experiments showed that the CUR was progressively released from the nanoparticles under stomach, small intestine, and colon conditions. Moreover, the final bioavailability of the encapsulated CUR (63%) was much higher than for free CUR (18.5%). The SPI-CQAS NPs developed in this study can therefore be used as an effective delivery system for CUR in functional foods.

Curcumin (Cur) as a natural food additive and photosensitizer has been widely applied on photodynamic sterilization and preservation for food, but the poor aqueous solubility and light stability restrict its extensive application. In this study, we report a Cur nanocapsules (Cur-CDs) made by carbon dots (CDs). Attributing to the hydrogen bonds formed between Cur and CDs, Cur-CDs exhibits excellent Cur aqueous solubility each to 9286.98 ng/mL (enhanced by 246.27 times) and light stability (enhanced by 1.51 times). The photogenerated electron transmission from Cur to CDs in addition resulted in >1.23 and 1.60 times generation of •O 2 − and •OH, compared to that of bare Cur. Accordingly, 5.73 × 10 3 CFU L. monocytogenes , and 5.43 × 10 3 CFU S. aureus were killed by 0.06 mg/mL Cur-CDs within 20 mins of blue light, showing the promising potential in the development and application of safe and environmentally friendly non-thermal sterilization technology based on Cur-CDs.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by the disruption of the intestinal epithelial barrier. This study described the synthesis and characterization of CCM-Co-ZIF-8, a novel composite material with enzyme-like activities similar to catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. CCM-Co-ZIF-8 demonstrated the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species that play a critical role in UC pathogenesis. In vitro studies using lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 cells showed that CCM-Co-ZIF-8 exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by promoting the transition of macrophages from an M1 to an M2 phenotype. In vivo experiments using a mouse model of UC demonstrated that CCM-Co-ZIF-8 suppressed the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. These findings suggested that CCM-Co-ZIF-8 might hold promise as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of UC.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, incurable disease that causes great suffering to patients. High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) are promising carriers of curcumin (Cur), which has a beneficial effect on UC. The retention rate of Cur encapsulated in HIPEs prepared by pea protein isolated nanoparticles/octenyl succinic anhydride-modified linear dextrin composite particles (PPINs/OSA-LD) or PPINs reached 84.85% and 85.98%, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of Cur dissolved in corn oil (73.84%) due to the superior protection of the emulsion interfacial structure. The HIPEs showed higher bioaccessibility of Cur (31.16%) due to the higher degree of free fatty acid release. After emulsion treatment, the symptoms of UC were ameliorated, mainly manifested by the recovery of body weight, growth of the colon, down-regulation of pro-inflammatory factors, up-regulation of anti-inflammatory factors, and balance of gut microbiota composition. The Cur-loaded HIPEs show an outstanding improvement in UC.

Eutectic solvents (ESs) have shown great efficiency on increasing the solubility, stability, and bioactivity of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in recent research studies. Curcumin is an important API driven from natural plants, which displayed a series of biofunctions like antibacterials, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities etc. However, its poor water solubility and stability hindered its further clinic application. Herein, a series of novel ESs based on matrine and fatty acids (i.e., octanoic acid, decanoic acid, and lauric acid) were developed. The phase behavior and cytotoxicity of these ESs were investigated. Moreover, the prepared ESs displayed excellent ability on enhancing the solubility of curcumin with the highest solubility being 28 mg/mL at 298 K, which was nearly 50000-fold than that in water. The curcumin showed high stability in ESs, where only 10% of curcumin decomposed under light irradiation for 6 h. Furthermore, biofilms based on these ES solutions of curcumin have been prepared and displayed high antioxidant and antibacterial activities. To summarize, the prepared eutectic systems provide a new strategy for further application of curcumin.
