The existence of energy transfer channels from the self-trapped exciton (STE) emission to lanthanide (Ln3+) ions in double perovskites (DPs) opens up new possibilities for high security anti-counterfeiting applications. In the present investigation, we synthesized Sb3+/Ho3+/Er3+ doped Cs2NaGdCl6 rare-earth-based DPs using a simple solvothermal method, whose luminescence could be quenched by water and restored after drying. The efficient down-shifting (DS) red emission from the 4f–4f transition of Ho3+ was enhanced 8-fold due to the energy transfer of STEs → Ho3+ ions via Sb3+ sensitization. The DS and up-conversion (UC) dual-mode multicolor emissions were obtained by further introducing Er3+. Specifically, the DS luminescence of the tri-doped sample under the UV region and that under 448 nm irradiation were white and red, respectively; and the UC luminescence under 980 nm irradiation was green. In view of their stimulus response to water and dual-mode multicolor luminescence properties, advanced anti-counterfeiting materials based on the obtained samples were designed.

Z-scheme structure is an effectively construction to improve the photocatalytic activity due to the excellent photo-generated electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. In this paper, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO), (Au/rGO)/CdS and modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal, ultrasonic dispersion, deposition-precipitation and ultrasonic-assisted methods. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), raman spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photocatalytic activity of prepared samples were evaluated via photocatalytic conversion rate of nitrite under ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiations. Due to the enhanced separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS exhibited excellent performance under both ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiation, reaching 94.59% and 91.25% conversion rates, respectively. Meanwhile, the effects of simulated solar-light irradiation time and corresponding reaction kinetics on photocatalytic conversion of nitrite were studied. Subsequently, the effects of electron and hole scavengers were investigated to further elaborate the possible mechanism. In addition, the study of used times showed that the prepared modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS nanocomposites can be effectively recycled without an apparent inactivation on photocatalytic activity. This research may provide a potential way by utilizing solar energy efficiently for converting nitrite and other contaminants released into the environment.

Upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs) of lanthanide-doped efficient ternary fluoride (β-NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+) with sizes below 20 nm are synthesized in a facile solvothermal route. Upconversion luminescence (UCL) of the UCNPs is found to increase with increase of the nanoparticle size prepared at a higher solvothermal-treatment temperature, due to reduction of the surface defects. Interestingly, opposite size dependences of the red/green UCL intensity ratio are observed for the same series of UCNPs in different surface conditions, i.e., with increase of the nanoparticle size, the ratio decreases for as-prepared dry powders, but increases for moisturized counterparts after being exposed in air for some days, and interesting the ratio decreases again after annealing of the moisturized samples. The phenomenon is explained due to the effect of surface defects and adsorbed water molecules, respectively, dominating in nonradiative relaxations, which usually facilitate red UCL. The disclosed phenomenon clarifies some contradictory observations on UCL in the literature.

Non-contact optical temperature measurement has attracted intense attention in recent years due to its advantages of high speed and high safety. In this work, a Lu2WO6:Er3+ phosphor was successfully prepared by a solid state reaction. The effective energy transfer from the [WO6]6− group to Er3+ was proved using the emission spectra and fluorescence lifetime measurements, with an estimated transfer efficiency of 51%. Benefiting from the self-luminescence of the [WO6]6− group, optical thermometry was established based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of [WO6]6− emission to Er3+ emission. Remarkably, strong emission color variability from blue to green was observed under 320 nm UV excitation as the temperature increases from 298 K to 548 K, while an opposite trend from green to cyan is observed under 378 nm UV excitation. The maximum relative sensitivity (SR Max) is 3.37% K−1 (298 K), which is highly superior to most of the previously reported values.

High-phase purity yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) nanoparticles (NPs), which account for more than half of the market share in solid-state lasers, are crucial luminescent ceramic matrixes used in upconversion luminescence (UCL) applications. As is well known, the optical performance of YAG NPs is greatly influenced by their phase purity, necessitating a long-duration, high-temperature annealing process to eliminate intermediate impurity phases and subsequent inspection of the crystal phases using traditional methods such as XRD. Here, we report a convenient direct method to evaluate the phase state of YAG NPs by correlating the macroscopic UCL properties with the phase evolution process of YAG NPs, given the strong dependence of UCL on the host phase structure. Yb3+/Er3+-codoped YAG NPs were fabricated using flame spray pyrolysis (FSP), an efficient industrial mass production method. The UCL intensity ratios of 556 and 546 nm (I556/I546) for Er3+ ions are used as a key parameter to assess the YAG phase states. When the I556/I546 ratio is larger than 1.80, FSP-prepared YAG:Yb3+/Er3+ NPs undergo a complete phase transformation from amorphous to hexagonal YAlO3 (YAH) and ultimately to cubic YAG, resulting in pure cubic YAG NPs with orange-to-green UCL color modulation. Our results offer an efficient optical crystal-phase probe applied for YAG and can enable the exploration of industrial phase monitoring for other optical materials.

Realizing efficient long-wavelength near-infrared (NIR) emission of Cr3+ ions is still a challenge in spinel-based phosphors due to the limitations of strong crystal fields. Here, we propose three design strategies for obtaining weak crystal fields in spinel-type crystals, and report for the first time designed Cr-activated LiZnNbO4 (LZNO) crystals with unique weak crystal fields and application of an NIR enhancement strategy via heterotopic and heterovalent doping with trivalent rare earth ions. Under irradiation with 468 nm blue light, the phosphor presents ultra-wideband NIR emission centered at 800 nm covering the region of 650–1300 nm, which is attributed to the larger radius, high valence state of cations and the low symmetry of octahedral sites in the LZNO spinel. Supported by XRD refinement, XPS analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, it was shown that when Er3+ ions are designedly doped with the Zn2+ sites of the spinel crystals, effective promotion of the valence state transformation of Cr4+ to Cr3+ in the LZNO:Cr3+ system is achieved by defect charge compensation, and this enhances the NIR emission by nearly 3 times. The results of this work not only enrich the material family of Cr3+-activated NIR emitting phosphors, but also offer a novel and simple method for improving the luminescence efficiency of Cr3+-activated phosphors.

By using the molten salt synthesis with B 2 O 3 flux and adjusting the doping concentration of Y 3+ , the intergrowth of the YTa 7 O 19 phase in L-Ta 2 O 5 is achieved. This structure enhances the pure green upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity, which is because the YTa 7 O 19 phase isolates the distribution of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ in the 2D layer, localizing the energy transfer from Yb 3+ to Er 3+ and reducing the loss during the energy transfer process. By adjusting the concentration of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ and the holding temperature, the green UCL integral intensity of the optimal sample is 1.09 times that of β-NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ . The intergrowth of the YTa 7 O 19 phase in L-Ta 2 O 5 is demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and comparing bandgap values, and the structure and properties cannot be obtained by solid phase sintering. Using the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technology, the absolute temperature sensitivity (S A ) and relative temperature sensitivity (S R ) were 0.01359 K −1 and 0.01001 K −1 , respectively. The phosphor-converted 980 nm LEDs based on samples are fabricated, the CIE color coordinate can reach (0.20, 0.76), which exceeds NTSC standard. This indicates that this material can be used for temperature sensing and luminescence display applications.

In the realm of photocatalysis, effectively utilizing solar energy, especially the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, presents substantial challenges. To tackle this issue, a novel composite of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 (denoted as NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4) was ingeniously fabricated and assessed for the photodegradation of organic contaminants. By harnessing the distinct properties of upconversion materials, narrow bandgap semiconductors, and magnetic substances, the NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 catalyst possesses a photodegradation rate of 92% for the rhodamine B dye under NIR light radiation, which is superior to NYE@Cu2O (50%) and NYE@Cu2O@MoS2 (85%). The enhanced performance in the near-infrared photocatalysis of NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of various components, which promotes an increase in photo-induced carrier generation and facilitates their efficient transfer and energy utilization under NIR irradiation. This study provides a possible route for the near-infrared photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in areas with limited light or even dark conditions.

The development of luminescent materials exhibiting dual luminescent modes for anti-counterfeiting purposes is of significant importance. In this study, we introduce and synthesize hybrid materials composed of carbon quantum dots and up-conversion particles (CDs@UCNP). By combining Yb 3+ and Er 3+ doped NaYF 4 up-conversion nanoparticles with carbon quantum dots, we successfully prepared a kind of fluorescent materials that demonstrate dual-mode fluorescence. By changing the fluorescent color of carbon quantum dots to achieve different down-conversion (DC) luminescence, we produced three dual-mode luminescent materials: BCDs@UCNP, YCDs@UCNP, and RCDs@UCNP, which exhibit blue, yellow, and red DC luminescence when exposed to 365 nm ultraviolet light, alongside green or red up-conversion luminescence under 980 nm laser. Furthermore, we formulated three water-based inks utilizing water-based acrylic emulsion as a binder. These inks exhibit dual-mode tunable luminescence properties, thereby enhancing the security of the printed patterns and positioning them as promising candidates for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Upconversion luminescence (UCL) of chiral inorganic nanostructured composite material and their applications have been challenging. This paper reports a successful preparation of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped chiral inorganic nanostructured BiOCl/Zn composite material (D-BYE-Zn) using a hydrothermal method and subsequent air annealing. The D-BYE-Zn phosphor significantly increased the intensity of UCL compared with the Er 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped achiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (A-BYE) and chiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (D-BYE). Our study suggests that free electron leaps from the Zn fraction onto BiOCl may be responsible for the enhanced UCL. In addition, the temperature sensitive behavior of the D-BYE-Zn phosphor has been evaluated using the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) and non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Er 3+ and the maximum relative sensitivities (S R ) obtained are 0.95 % K −1 and 1.65 %K −1 (323 K). Our work provides a new strategy for constructing rare-earth doped chiral inorganic nanostructured composite materials to realize UCL enhancement while promising a wide range of applications in light source temperature measurement.

Zero-dimensional (0D) halide perovskites inherently exhibit inefficient energy transfer for lanthanide-based upconversion luminescence (UCL) due to isolated structural units. Despite extensive research efforts, the exploration and validation of thermally enhanced UCL in 0D perovskites remain notably limited. This study demonstrates that Mn 2+ /Yb 3+ /Er 3+ tri-doping can achieve a ninefold enhancement of Er 3+ UCL in 0D Cs 3 BiCl 6 with preferential amplification of green emission. In particular, structural analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance, and steady-state spectroscopies confirm that the formation of Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimers can overcome the limitation of an ultralong interionic distance of 0.774 nm, enabling efficient energy transfer upconversion at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, comparative investigations with one-dimensional (Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 ) and three-dimensional (Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 ) perovskites reveal that the pronounced UCL enhancement originates from Mn 2+ -induced lattice distortion and facilitates energy transfer from Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ dimer to Er 3+ . Finally, the optical thermometry exhibits a high absolute sensitivity of 2.09%/K and outstanding thermal cycling properties in the 313–573 K range, paving the way for optical sensing applications and beyond.

Yb3+ and Er3+ ions co-doped α-NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid (CA) as chelating ligand and NaNO3 as mineralizer. The influences
of the CA/RE (RE= Y+Yb+Er) molar ratio, reaction time, reaction temperature and the NaNO3/RE molar ratio on the crystal phases and shapes of as-prepared products have been well investigated. The possible formation mechanism has been discussed in detail and an aggregation growth
theory has been proposed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the products. Under 980 nm excitation, the emission intensities
of the as-prepared nanocrystals were much stronger than that of the nanocrystals modified by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Additionally, the as-prepared products maintained spherical shape and high degree of monodispersion, which is expected to be suggestive for the preparation of
other complex rare earth fluoride compounds.
