Sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics limit the development of metal-air batteries and fuel cells, hindering overall energy conversion efficiency. Therefore, significant research has focused on cost-effective, highly active, and exceptionally stable non-precious metal ORR electrocatalysts. This study presents the synthesis of a nanohybrid material called Fe SAs/FN-CNs. It is made up of single iron atoms embedded in ultrathin porous carbon nanosheets that are co-doped with F and N. The synthesis process involves an easy one-step pyrolysis technique without additional post-treatment. The Fe SAs/FN-CNs material is designed to function as an effective zinc-air battery ORR electrocatalyst. Based on their distinctive components and structure, the optimal Fe SAs/FN-CNs exhibit outstanding catalytic efficiency and long-lasting performance in the alkaline ORR. They have an onset potential (E onset ) of 0.95 V, a half-wave potential (E 0.5 ) of 0.85 V, a kinetic current density (J K ) of 20.49 mA cm −2 at 0.8 V, and a diffusion-limited current (J d ) of 6.2 mA cm −2 . In addition, a Zn-air battery made using homemade Fe SAs/FN-CNs demonstrated a power density of 197 mW cm −2 , a specific capacitance of 813.5 mAh g −1 , and exceptional stability. It outperformed the commercial Pt/C by operating continuously for over 147 hours at 10 mA/cm² (discharge-charge). The Fe SAs/FN-CNs nanohybrid electrocatalyst shows great potential as an electrocatalyst for various metal-air batteries.

N/F-doped nanospheres hard carbon (CDC-F-900) was prepared via simple annealing followed by HF solvothermal reaction. F-doping is achieved by replacing –OH and –COOH groups with F − to form C-F and C-F 2 . Abundant micropores and defect structures exist in CDC-F-900, providing a rapid diffusion pathway for Na + /K + . Therefore, it provides the capacity of 372.2 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 0.1 A/g in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Especially in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), it can still provide an ultra-high capacity of 214.2 mAh/g at 10 A/g after 5000 cycles. This is due to the inorganics-rich SEI which possesses higher ionic conductivity and stability, resulting in excellent long-cycle stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the conjugate effect of N/F leads to an appropriate adsorption energy for K + at defects. Not only does it increase the reversible capacity by reducing irreversible K + adsorption, but it also accelerates ion transport rate, resulting in better rate capability. The potassium storage mechanism of CDC-F-900 is elaborated in detail through in-situ Raman spectroscopy and XRD pattern. This work provides a new insight for the design and development of low-cost, source-rich, and long-life hard carbon anodes for SIBs/PIBs.

Aqueous copper-selenium (Cu-Se) battery based on conversion mechanism have garnered interest due to their intrinsic safety features and high specific capacity. However, the slow conversion kinetics presents a challenge for its development. Herein, catalytic host material of NbSe 2 @few-layered Nb 2 C (NbSe 2 @f-Nb 2 C) heterostructure with built-in electric field (BIEF) is prepared by in situ selenization strategy for aqueous Cu-Se battery. Benefiting from the high electrical conductivity of f-Nb 2 C MXene, the high electrocatalytic performance of NbSe 2 and the spontaneous BIEF between NbSe 2 and f-Nb 2 C MXene, the Se redox reactions kinetics is enhanced and the reaction barrier is reduced. Consequently, the specific capacity of Se/NbSe 2 @f-Nb 2 C cathode can reach 1128 mAh g −1 at 0.25 A g −1 with stable cycling performance. Additionally, the conversion mechanism is investigated via comprehensive characterizations and density functional theory calculations. This study provides an innovative approach for designing high performance MXene-based catalytic host materials to enhance the conversion kinetics of aqueous Cu-Se batteries.

An electrochemical sensor demonstrating exceptional sensitivity was constructed for bisphenol F analysis. Carbon nanocages and Prussian blue nanocubes were synthesized and then applied to modify a glassy carbon electrode layer by layer, creating the unique sensing platform. The combination of carbon nanocages and Prussian blue nanocubes greatly improved the charge transfer rate and offered a substantial surface area for bisphenol F adsorption. Exhibiting outstanding electrocatalytic performance for bisphenol F oxidation, the as-proposed electrode provided a broad linear range from 0.1 to 500 μM and a low detection limit of 0.03 μM (S/N = 3). The sensor manifested strong selectivity, showing minimal interference from typical coexisting substances. Its stability and reproducibility were evaluated, and the results were satisfactory. The sensor effectively determined bisphenol F in real samples, achieving recoveries between 95.7 % and 98.4 %. This study offers a promising method for the sensitive and precise detection of bisphenol F in environmental samples, significantly contributing to environmental monitoring.

People pay more and more attention to their own health and environmental safety, which makes the monitoring and treatment of harmful amines such as triethylamine (TEA) emitted in the industrial process increasingly critical. In order to address this issue, we focus on the heterostructure construction of two-dimensional rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ) and acid-functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs), using their unique electronic properties and high specific surface area for triethylamine gas detection. The findings demonstrated that, at room temperature (25°C), the ReS 2 /f-MWCNTs sensor's response to 100 ppm TEA reached 63 %. Under the same environmental conditions (25℃), the response value of the ReS 2 sensor to 100 ppm TEA is 6 %, and the sensing performance is improved by more than 10 times. In addition, the sensor has fast response recovery (73 s/46 s) and good repeatability and stability. Based on this research, we designed a simple detection device, providing a direction for the practical detection application of TEA sensors.

In this study, the effects of various sources polysaccharides, including chitosan, hawthorn polysaccharide and lentinan, on MeIQx (2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazole[4,5- f ] quinoxaline) formation in roasted beef patties were investigated. Results showed that hawthorn polysaccharide had the strongest inhibitory effect, while only chitosan decreased free MeIQx in a dose-dependent manner. For bound MeIQx, the inhibitory effect of chitosan, hawthorn polysaccharide, and lentinan were 14 %, 22 %, and 39 % at 0.1 % addition. When increased to 0.5 %, the inhibition rate was 26 %, 40 %, and 36 %. None of the polysaccharides increased the inhibition rate of MeIQx at 1 % addition (25 %, 36 %, and 33 %, respectively). Overall, the MeIQx content may be related to the polysaccharides themselves have excellent water retention capability. Additionally, polysaccharides effectively eliminated the intermediates. The carbonyl content and TBARS were reduced due to the free radical scavenging activity of polysaccharides. This study provides a theoretical basis for the polysaccharides to reduce MeIQx in high-temperature meat processing.

Al 2 O 3 exhibits high activity for the resource utilization of potent greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons via dehydrofluorination or F/Cl exchange. However, it experiences completely fluorination under corrosive HF environment, leading to thorough fluorination of F-Al-O active site into F-Al-F, accompanied with serious carbon deposition. In this work, we successfully confined Al 2 O 3 in SiC (Al 2 O 3 @SiC) via treating Al 2 O 3 /SiC under high temperatures (>800 °C). The results showed that different with simple loaded Al 2 O 3 (Al 2 O 3 /SiC), during high temperature treatment, reaction between Al 2 O 3 and SiC occurred, leading to the confinement effect. Then, contributed by the interaction, desired F-Al-O species could be stabilized on the surface of SiC. While for Al 2 O 3 /SiC, it thoroughly turned into AlF 3 under identical reactive conditions, leading to inferior stability during CH 3 CHF 2 dehydrofluorination. Furthermore, the reaction rate of 5 %Al 2 O 3 @SiC is nearly up to 4 folds higher than that of traditional AlF 3 . Facilitated by the suitable Lewis acid intensity, less carbon deposition formed on Al 2 O 3 @SiC. Thus, constructing strong interaction between F-Al-O and stable SiC provides a potential strategy to stabilize unstable active centers.

The electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methane (CH4) represents a promising strategy for carbon utilization, however, achieving high selectivity and efficiency remains a significant challenge. Herein, a copper foil-based catalyst with abundant interfaces was synthesized through electrodeposition to achieve Sb and F dual doping on the copper surface (CuSbF-ED), enabling efficient methane production through pulsed CO2 electrolysis. Under the pulsed electrolysis condition, the CuSbF-ED catalyst achieved a remarkably high CH4 Faradaic efficiency of approximately 92.6% and a partial current density of 60.3 mA•cm-2 at an overpotential of -1.2 V vs RHE, representing significant advancement over the static electrolysis performance of pristine copper foil. The in situ infrared spectroscopy results revealed an enhanced coverage of key intermediates *CHO on the CuSbF-ED surface during pulsed electrolysis. Theoretical calculations further confirmed that the CuSbF-ED structure with Sb and F dual doping stabilizes *CO intermediates and promotes the formation and adsorption of *CHO intermediates. Under the pulsed electrolysis conditions, the stabilized Cu species on CuSbF-ED surface facilitate the further conversion of adsorbed *CHO and *CH2O intermediates by deep hydrogenation processes toward high CH4 selectivity. The present research highlights Sb-F dual doping combined with pulsed potential electrolysis as a promising approach for the efficient and selective electroreduction of CO2 to CH4, contributing to sustainable carbon management

BACKGROUND Over the past two decades, bed bugs ( Cimex spp.) have resurged as common urban pests around the world. The search for efficient and safe control measures has become a key interest among researchers, manufacturers, and pest control professionals. In this study, we evaluated and compared the efficacy of steam, diatomaceous earth (DE) dust, and a combination of both against tropical bed bugs ( Cimex hemipterus (F.)) under laboratory and field conditions. RESULTS In the laboratory study, the mortality of bed bugs after 2 days of exposure to DE dust was 100%. When bed bugs stayed on the surface of an object or in cracks, a brief steam treatment (1 s) caused 100% mortality. However, when bed bugs were hidden under a fabric cover, steam application for 10 s only caused 89 ± 6% mortality. Bed bugs that survived steam treatment exhibited reduced feeding activity. In a 14-week long study, there was no significant difference in the reduction rate of bed bugs between steam treatment and DE dust treatment. A 37-week long control study showed that steam and steam plus DE dust treatments eliminated 97–100% of the infestations. CONCLUSION Applying steam and DE dust are effective strategies for eliminating natural tropical bed bug infestations. Continuous follow-up monitoring and treatment until no bed bugs are found are crucial in completely eliminating the infestation of tropical bed bugs. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The direct electrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to methane using water as a medium is a reliable way to store intermittent renewable energy and solve environmental problems. However, in such multielectron/proton transfer reactions, the role of water is often overlooked. Specifically, the sluggish kinetics of water dissociation limit the effective proton supply during methane formation. Here, we propose a copper-doped CeO2 catalyst with frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), which can effectively reduce carbon dioxide to methane. Combined experimental analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the synergistic interaction between Cu and FLPs forms an f-p-d gradient orbital coupling system, which significantly promotes water dissociation to generate active protons and optimizes the adsorption behavior of the *H and *COOH intermediates. Even at the large current density of −273 mA cm–2, the Faraday efficiency of Cu/CeO2-FLPs for methane was as high as 78.0%, with a conversion frequency of 15784.1 h–1 in the flow cell. This work provides a strategy for the rational design of efficient multipoint catalytic systems.

Structure and stealth integrated materials that simultaneously deliver mechanical loading and broadband electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance are critical for next generation stealth aircraft. Although conventional carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (C f /CMCs) exhibit outstanding load-bearing capacity, their inherent EMW reflection characteristics often fail to meet stealth requirements. This work proposes a multiscale design strategy synergizing microscopic defect engineering with macroscopic gradient permittivity modulation. Accordingly, (SiO 2 –C) f /(CrZrHfNbTa)C–Si 3 N 4 –SiBCN composite featuring self-adaptive impedance matching and multi-mechanism EMW absorption were successfully constructed. The material demonstrates acceptable load-bearing capacity (101 ± 5 MPa) while achieving a remarkably high effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) per unit thickness (2.68 GHz mm −1 ). More importantly, radar cross section (RCS) simulations reveal that the sample achieves a remarkable RCS reduction of 35.52 dB m 2 . This surpasses most reported materials system, demonstrating high practical application potential. Density functional theory calculations reveals that defect engineering (lattice distortion and point defects) in the sample constructs new polarization centers at the microscopic level, which significantly enhances polarization relaxation loss for improved EMW absorption. On the other hand, macroscopic structural design (SiO 2f -C f -SiO 2f ) significantly optimizes the impedance matching, which effectively broadens EAB. The multiscale design strategy overcomes the inherent conflict between strong EMW reflection and attenuation in carbon fibers, which provides a novel material solution for stealth aircraft.

A novel fluorescent probe , phenolphthalein‑dialdehyde‑(2‑pyridyl) hydrazone (L), for sequentially detecting Al 3+ and F − in almost 100% aqueous medium was successfully designed and synthesized. The probe offers two binding pockets for Al 3+ to form a 1: 2 ligand/metal complex, leading to a significant fluorescence enhancement at 465 nm. Further, the in-situ formed L-Al complex acts as a secondary fluorescent chemosensor for F − by quenching the fluorescence of the complex with high selectivity. The detection limit for Al 3+ and F − sensing is 2.28 nM and 0.13 μM, respectively, which are far below the World Health Organization (WHO) acceptable limits (7.41 μM for Al 3+ ion and 79 μM for F − ) in drinking water . The probe L was successfully applied to the detection of Al 3+ and F − in cells using fluorescence microscopy .
