Inspired by the “moisturizing-antibacterial” efficacy of facial masks, this study for the first time proposes and fabricates a nanocomposite fresh-keeping paper integrating efficient moisturization and synergistic antibacterial activity, aiming to delay post-harvest quality deterioration of fruits and vegetables. Using degradable paper as the substrate, this fresh-keeping paper (P-Car-PDA NPs) with dual moisturizing-antibacterial functions was constructed by loading a nanocomposite coating (CL-Car-PDA NPs). The physicochemical properties and fresh-keeping effects of CL-Car-PDA NPs and P-Car-PDA NPs were systematically investigated. When the volume ratio of Car to PDA NPs was 1:15 ( v /v), the maximum loading efficiency of PDA NPs reached 63.90%. Under simulated cold chain logistics conditions, both CL-Car-PDA NPs and P-Car-PDA NPs could effectively retard the release of Car and exhibit excellent inhibitory activity against Aspergillus niger . CL-Car-PDA NPs demonstrated superior physical barrier properties, washability, and biosafety. Specifically, the viability of mouse mononuclear macrophages treated with CL-Car-PDA NPs reached 94.56%, and no significant differences were observed in the germination rate or average plant height of mung bean sprouts compared with the blank control group. The mechanical properties, water vapor permeability (WVP), and gas selectivity of P-Car-PDA NPs were significantly improved compared with the control group. After 6 days of storage under simulated cold chain logistics, its tensile strength was increased by 520%, while the WVP was decreased by 60.60% relative to the control. Notably, the total migration of P-Car-PDA NPs in four food simulants was below the regulatory threshold of 10 mg/dm 2 . Under simulated cold chain logistics, P-Car-PDA NPs extended the shelf lives of strawberries, blueberries, cherry tomatoes, and Agaricus bisporus to the 8th, 18th, 25th, and 10th days, respectively, which outperformed CL-Car-PDA NPs.

AH-SC/P served as a multi-interface building block for active fruit coatings. • Acid–heat restructuring improved fruit-wax adhesion nearly five-fold. • Pectin regulated colloidal phase behavior and processable viscoelastic networks. • AH-SC/P stabilized 3% EUG with 94.95% encapsulation efficiency. • AH-SC-P-E delayed fruit deterioration with preliminary 28 d compatibility. Poor wetting and weak retention on low-energy waxy fruit surfaces remain major engineering barriers for waterborne edible coatings, even when the coating matrix shows good barrier or antimicrobial activity in model systems. Here, we developed a multi-interface engineering strategy to construct transport-regulated active coatings by restructuring sodium caseinate (SC) into wax-affinitive amyloid-like assemblies and regulating the resulting assemblies with pectin (PEC). Citric acid-assisted heating produced β-sheet-rich acid-heat-treated SC (AH-SC) assemblies with exposed hydrophobic domains, supporting stronger adsorption on a representative fruit-wax model and increasing the 180° peel force nearly fivefold from 65.3 to 323.2 N/m. PEC acted as a charged hydrocolloid regulator, balancing the wax affinity of AH-SC with colloidal phase control, shear-thinning processability, weak viscoelastic network formation, and oil–water interfacial adsorption. The optimized 2:1 AH-SC/P ratio stabilized 3% eugenol (EUG) with 94.95% encapsulation efficiency, enabled two-stage EUG release, and sustained antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Upon drying, the emulsion was converted into a flexible, water-resistant, visually compatible, and water-removable coating matrix. Application tests on kumquats and strawberries showed reduced water loss, maintained firmness, delayed quality deterioration, and suppressed microbial growth. A 28-day mouse oral gavage study showed no obvious systemic or histological abnormalities under the tested conditions, supporting preliminary in vivo compatibility. Overall, this work establishes AH-SC-PEC as a single food-compatible hydrocolloid building block for coordinating oil–water stabilization, coating-matrix formation, fruit-wax adhesion, active-compound transport, and post-use removability. Antioxidants such as ascorbic acid, glutathione, gallic acid, and caffeic acid are crucial for food quality and human health, yet their simultaneous discrimination in complex food matrices remains challenging due to overlapping reactivities. In this study, we developed a robust colorimetric sensor array based on trimetallic FeMnZn‑nitrogen‑carbon (FeMnZn-NC) nanozymes. Synthesized via high-temperature pyrolysis, the introduction of Zn as a sacrificial template generates abundant structural defects and exposes more active sites, resulting in significantly enhanced oxidase-like activity compared to mono- and bimetallic analogues. The nanozymes catalyze the rapid oxidation of TMB and ABTS substrates within 2 min, a process differentially inhibited by distinct antioxidants via varying electron-transfer and chelating mechanisms. Leveraging these unique kinetic “fingerprints,” a dual-channel sensor array was constructed to identify ascorbic acid, glutathione, gallic acid, and caffeic acid, exhibiting linear responses over 0–40 μM with detection limits of 0.22, 0.43, 0.21, and 0.14 μM, respectively. The sensor demonstrated excellent anti-interference capability and was effectively applied to identify antioxidants in apples, pears, and kiwifruits. The integration of a smartphone-assisted colorimetric platform enables rapid, on-site detection, highlighting its strong potential for food quality monitoring and nutritional assessment.

This study evaluated Osmanthus fragrans fruit (OFF) peel as a potential source of anthocyanin-based natural colorants. Anthocyanins were extracted using acidified ethanol and purified by macroporous resin adsorption, yielding a pigment-rich extract with a recovery of 10.4 ± 0.2% from dried peel. HPLC–MS/MS analysis indicated that cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside (C3R) was the predominant anthocyanin in the extract. The molar absorptivity of C3R was experimentally determined to enable more accurate quantification of C3R-rich systems. The purified extract exhibited typical pH-dependent color behavior, maintaining a stable red coloration under acidic conditions (pH 2.0–4.0). Thermal stability experiments showed that C3R degradation was strongly influenced by temperature and pH, and the degradation behavior followed first-order kinetics. In addition, the extract displayed measurable antioxidant capacity in DPPH and FRAP assays. These results demonstrate that O. fragrans fruit peel is a promising source of C3R-rich anthocyanins with potential applications as natural colorants in acidic food systems.

Phycocyanin–Cu2+-loaded gelatin–chitosan composite films (Gel/Cu@PC/Ch) were developed as active packaging materials to address the postharvest deterioration of fresh produce. A series of composite films with varying chitosan (Ch) concentrations (0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 5%,w/v) were systematically fabricated and characterized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the Gel/Cu@PC/Ch0.5film (0.5% chitosan) exhibited smooth, pore-free, and crack-free surface and cross-sectional morphologies, while a higher chitosan dosage (5%) triggered severe structural cracking. Gel/Cu@PC/Ch0.5achieved the maximum water contact angle of 101.13 ± 9.59°, demonstrating superior surface hydrophobicity. All composite films possessed outstanding UV-shielding capacity; meanwhile, ABTS and DPPH free radical scavenging rates rose gradually with increasing chitosan content, reaching 79.71 ± 0.72% and 84.91 ± 1.31% at 5% Ch, respectively. In antibacterial assessments, Gel/Cu@PC/Ch0.5showed effective inhibition against bothStaphylococcus aureusandEscherichia coli, with inhibition zone diameters of 13.83 ± 0.42 mm and 14.93 ± 0.83 mm, respectively, owing to the synergistic bactericidal effect of Cu2+and chitosan. In grape preservation trials conducted over 12 days, Gel/Cu@PC/Ch0.5wrapped grapes exhibited the lowest weight loss (3.60 ± 0.30%), retained the highest residual firmness (316.16 ± 13.81 g) and total soluble solids (TSS), and maintained a significantly higher TAC value of 0.71 ± 0.12 nM after 12 days of storage, with no visible microbial spoilage or severe shriveling observed throughout storage. These results demonstrate that the Gel/Cu@PC/Ch0.5composite film achieves a desirable integration of moisture barrier performance, antioxidant activity, and broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy, offering a scalable and biodegradable platform for active food packaging in fresh fruit preservation.

Quaternized cellulose ester (Q y CE) with tunable alkyl chain lengths was synthesized via esterification followed by the Menshutkin reaction. By direct blending of Q y CE and dopamine (DA), water-soluble and transparent DA/Q y CE complexes were prepared. Q y CE effectively restricted covalent polymerization and non-covalent self-assembly of polydopamine (PDA) through steric confinement, cation–π interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and hydrogen bonding. This confinement resulted in enhanced fluorescence of the DA oligomer/Q y CE multifunctional complexes. The DA oligomer/Q y CE films formed after drying also exhibited outstanding tensile strength (~45.64 MPa). Furthermore, the resulting samples demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity with a DPPH radical scavenging rate exceeding 93 %, and strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (~99.90 %) and Escherichia coli (~100.00 %). Consequently, as a water-soluble coating material, the complexes effectively reduced dehydration shrinkage and oxidative deterioration of fruits, significantly extending their shelf life. The fluorescence of the film is sensitive to iron ions, enabling pattern design for anti-counterfeiting applications. These findings highlight that DA oligomer/Q y CE multifunctional complexes serve as a versatile and sustainable platform with potential in both food preservation and anti-counterfeiting.

Isochoric freezing is a hot research topic among recent novel food preservation methods, and litchi fruit is highly perishable, requiring reliable preservation techniques to maintain its quality and extend its shelf life for fresh consumption. In the current study, the effects of isochoric freezing and storage (IFS) at −2.5 °C on the preservation of fresh litchis for 35 days were investigated as compared with traditional frozen storage (TFS) at −18 °C and chilled storage (CS) at 4 °C on physicochemical characteristics (mass change, total soluble solid content, ascorbic acid content, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging capacity), colour quality, aroma profile, texture, and water status. Results showed that IFS was superior to TFS and CS in terms of colour, texture, and water status of litchi aril. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) integrated multiple parameters to assess the overall quality of stored litchis, further demonstrating that isochoric freezing best preserves litchi quality in a manner most similar to fresh fruit.

Background/Objectives:Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common hair loss disorder in dermatological practice. Its primary pathogenesis involves the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by type II 5α-reductase upon reaching dermal papilla cells (DPCs). DHT impairs DPCs’ activity and inhibits hair growth. Although the FDA-approved drugs finasteride and minoxidil show certain efficacy, they are also associated with severe side effects. This study aims to explore the effects ofTerminalia chebulafruit extract (TCFE) on hair growth and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods: We investigated the therapeutic potential of TCFE in hair follicle regeneration, employing a multi-level experimental approach combining in vitro analyses of DPCs, in vivo animal models of AGA, and ex vivo cultures of human hair follicles and scalp tissue. Results: First, RNA-seq analysis and RT-PCR validation revealed that TCFE treatment activated the Wnt and TGF-β3 signaling pathways in DPCs, particularly upregulating the AKR1C gene family, which is involved in DHT metabolism. TCFE also potently inhibited type II 5α-reductase activity and mitigated DHT-induced damage to DPCs. In an AGA mouse model, TCFE reversed the AGA phenotype with efficacy comparable to finasteride. However, unlike finasteride, TCFE specifically enhanced the expression of AKR1C1 and AKR1C3, indicating a distinct mechanism. Finally, in ex vivo organ cultures, TCFE suppressed hair follicle cell apoptosis, promoted proliferation, and thereby stimulated hair growth. Conclusions: These findings suggest that TCFE is a promising natural treatment for AGA, likely acting through multiple mechanisms, including Wnt pathway activation, 5α-reductase inhibition, and enhanced DHT degradation.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Physalis alkekengi L. ( P. alkekengi ) is widely used in traditional medicine and functional foods for its various medicinal properties. However, its toxicological profile has not been comprehensively assessed. Aim of the study This study aimed to characterize the developmental toxicity and cardiotoxicity of P. alkekengi using a Danio rerio ( D. rerio ) embryo model and to identify key toxic constituents to support safety optimization. Materials and methods D. rerio embryos were exposed to the fruit and calyx extracts of P. alkekengi as well as membrane-fractionated preparations to assess toxic phenotypes. Chemical profiling was performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS), and mechanistic insights were explored using apoptosis-related assays and network toxicology analysis. Results The fruit extract of P. alkekengi exhibited stronger developmental toxicity and cardiotoxicity effects compared to the calyx extract. The 5–10 kDa non-polysaccharide fraction of the fruit was identified as the primary toxic source, with Glycidyl stearate (GS) being the key cardiotoxic component in this fraction. Removal of the most toxic 5–10 kDa fraction during the extraction process significantly reduced the toxicity of the fruit extract. Conclusion The toxicity of P. alkekengi fruit extract is concentrated in the non-polysaccharide 5–10 kDa fraction, with GS being the main contributor to the toxicity in this fraction. Membrane-based separation technology to remove this fraction can enhance the safety of the extract. This study provides a framework for the safety evaluation and optimization of traditional medicinal plants.

Cinnamaldehyde (Ci) is a highly effective natural broad-spectrum antibacterial agent and preservative, but its strong volatility and short duration have a negative impact on its application in the field of agriculture and food. In order to improve these properties, porous PHA/CS microspheres were prepared by using polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and chitosan (CS) as basic materials based on Poiseuille flow principle, and PHA/CS scaffolds were obtained by sintering the microspheres at low temperature. The effect of the ratio of PHA and CS on the particle size and charge of microspheres was studied. It was found that the particle size increased with the increase of the ratio of PHA and CS, while the surface charge changed from negative to positive. The SEM results showed that the microspheres exhibit a porous structure, and the CS adsorb on the surface of microspheres resulted in the reduction of surface pores. FTIR spectrum confirmed that there was only physical interaction between PHA and CS. PHA-based microspheres exhibited high encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity for Ci. Ci-loaded PHA-based microspheres and scaffolds had different release rates, and the release time can be adjusted in the range of 7–60 days. Antimicrobial activity and fruit preservation ability of the loaded Ci microspheres showed that it can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and extend the shelf life of the strawberry. This novel Ci carrier with good biocompatibility, biodegradability and adjustable release rate would have a broad application in the field of food preservation and antibacterial.

The damage caused by transportation to fresh agricultural products is a major challenge in the logistics field. The traditional packaging systems are passive and cannot provide real-time monitoring functions. Moreover, the acceleration and pressure sensors currently used for collision monitoring are facing issues such as power dependence, high costs, and environmental problems. Frictional electric nanogenerators (TENGs) can convert mechanical stimuli into electrical signals, providing an innovative approach for achieving self-powered and intelligent food packaging systems, with enhanced functionality, sustainability, and interactivity. Here, we prepared a chitosan-gelatin (Csgel)/CNC/MXene (CM) composite bio-film using cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-bridged MXene hybrid material as the functional filler and Csgel as the matrix. Based on this film, we further constructed a self-powered and environmentally friendly CM-TENG system to monitor the collisions of fruits during transportation packaging. The CM biofilm has broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, with an antibacterial rate of up to 99.99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Its antioxidant performance is up to 75.34%, and its UV shielding UPF value is up to 138.08, providing good preservation effects for strawberries. The device's electrical energy conversion efficiency (instantaneous area power density of 5.8 W m -2 and force sensitivity (24.65 V·N⁻¹)) makes CM-TENG a potential sensor for monitoring the collisions of fresh agricultural products in the packaging during logistics. CM-TENG collects mechanical vibrations during fruit transportation and converts them into real-time electrical signals. The simulation measurement of strawberry transportation indicates that the sensor's electrical output increases with the increase in impact force. This can remind drivers to reduce vibration and minimize mechanical damage to the fruits. Additionally, the characteristic electrical signals generated by different fruit impacts combined with convolutional neural networks (CNN) for recognition have an identification accuracy of up to 98.0% for 8 types of fruits. This study demonstrates that CM-TENG can effectively monitor collision damage during fruit transportation and can identify different fruit types, providing new ideas for intelligent food packaging systems.

In this study, Toxicodendron vernicifluum fisetin chelated silver nanoparticles (FT-AgNPs) with outstanding antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were constructed via self-assembly. To surprise, 0.6 wt% FT-AgNPs was compatibly dispersed into the 1:1 chitosan/pullulan (CS/PUL, CP) matrix. The hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction between FT-AgNPs and CP, slightly increased the CP thermal stability, and greatly enhanced the tensile strength to 61.2 MPa, water vapor permeability below 20 kg/m 2 •d. Furthermore, after treated with the composite hydrocolloid film (FT-AgNPs/CP), the reactive oxygen species level of the treated Aspergillus niger cells was significantly increased, and the membrane permeability was enhanced. It effectively slowed down the decay of litchi fruit induced by microbial infection under the storage at 25 °C (15 d of the 0.6 % FT-AgNPs/CP treatment vs 9 d of the control). In addition, 0.024 μg/kg Ag + residual in lichi pulp verified the qualified safety of the application of the 0.6 % FT-AgNPs/CP.
