ZnMOF-74 responsive fluorescence sensing platform for detection of Fe3+

Linli Hou,Yonghai Song,Yingjie Xiao,Rong Wu,Li Wang

Fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide attention in fluorescence detection. Herein, a novel sensing platform for highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe 3+ in aqueous solution was proposed based on 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DOBDC)-Zn 2+ MOFs (ZnMOF-74). The as-prepared ZnMOF-74 exhibited uniform clavicorn nanostructures and high day-to-day stability in acidic aqueous solution (pH 4.0). Because of the special response of phenolic hydroxyl groups of DOBDC with Fe 3+ , the cation exchange between Fe 3+ and Zn 2+ occurred, which caused collapse of the skeleton and formed a blue weak-fluorescent iron(III)-phenol salt complex (Fe-DOBDC), which led to the effective fluorescence quenching of ZnMOF-74. ZnMOF-74 was used as a probe for detection of Fe 3+ under relatively acidic condition with a good linear range of 0.1–100 μM and a low detection limit of 40 nM. The fluorescence probe was also applied to determine Fe 3+ in real river water and human serum with good recovery and accuracy. This work provided a good Fe 3+ sensor based on ZnMOF-74 due to high affinity between phenolic hydroxyl group and Fe 3+ .

The recycle of red mud as excellent SCR catalyst for removal of NOx

Changming Li,Hong Zeng,Pingle Liu,Jian Yu,Feng Guo,Guangwen Xu,Zhan-guo Zhang

The development of new routes for the utilization of red mud (RM) waste is very urgent due to its huge accumulation and potential environmental harm. By taking advantage of its Fe–Al–Si–Ti composition and excellent plasticity, we developed a ball milling and acid–base neutralization method to reuse the RM waste as Fe-based denitration catalysts. The resulting RM catalysts demonstrate excellent catalytic activity and stability with >90% NO conversion above 400 °C in the presence of SO2 and H2O, which is even much better than that of a commercial V–W–Ti catalyst. Characterization data reveal that our treatment eliminates poisonous alkaline metal elements and increases dispersion of RM particles, making the RM active for denitration reactions. The formation of ferric sulfate species with more reducible Fe3+/Fe2+ active sites by a SO2 activation method can further enhance the denitration activity. Moreover, NH3-TPD and in situ IR results demonstrate that the NH3-SCR reaction over the RM catalyst follows the Eley–Rideal mechanism at high temperature and the increased absorption of NH3 for alkaline metal-eliminated or SO2-activated samples accounts for its high DeNOx efficiency. The demonstrated feasibility for reusage of the RM as DeNOx catalyst has promising industrial prospects for its extremely low cost, no toxicity, and high efficiency.

Constructing Dual-Atomic Fe─Fe Sites Nanozyme for Targeted Osteoarthritis Therapy through Mitigating Oxidative Stress and Cartilage Degeneration

Ting Ying,Qi Wang,Dejian Li,Yao Wang,Pengfang Zhang,Chengqing Yi,Rui Zhu

Osteoarthritis progression is driven by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes significant secondary damage to chondrocytes and articular cartilage. Herein, the concept of holding desired dual-site nanozymes is proposed through developing Fe─Fe dimers on nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Fe 2 -NCs) to eliminate excessive ROS through the co-adsorption mechanism of superoxide radical. The Fe 2 -NCs present an enhanced ROS performance, effectively mimicking key antioxidant enzymes. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the synergistic effects of the Fe─Fe dimer can modulate oxygen adsorption configurations and accelerating O─O bond-cleavage. In vitro and in vivo results show that Fe 2 -NCs effectively mitigate ROS, protecting chondrocytes from oxidative stress-induced apoptosis. The mitochondrial function can be strengthened over Fe 2 -NCs by inhibiting NOX4 expression, restoring ATP levels, and normalizing COXIV expression. Additionally, Fe 2 -NCs significantly downregulate the pro-inflammatory mediator COX-2, inhibit MMP-13-mediated cartilage degradation, and slow down the type II collagen (COL2) breakdown through the inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathway.

Anode Electrodeposition of Fe/Fe3O4 composite on Carbon Fabric as a Negative Electrode for Flexible Ni−Fe Batteries

Jie Zhu,Qian Zhang,Sudong Yang,Lin Chen,Peng Zhao,Qiang Yan

Graphical Flexibility approach : A facile two-step process for fabricating a distinctive Fe/Fe 3 O 4 composite deposited on carbon fabric as a negative electrode for a flexible nickel-iron battery is reported. The assembled battery exhibited a high voluminal capacity with a stable operating voltage up to 1.7 V, long-term cyclic stability as well as good mechanical stability and flexibility. The nickel-iron (Ni−Fe) battery is a competitive alternative for electrochemical energy storage, owning to its low cost, high safety, and strong auto-adaptive ability. However, the self-discharge and passivation of the negative electrode are the two main issues. In this work, a rock-like Fe/Fe 3 O 4 composite is synthesized and deposited on carbon fabric (Fe/Fe 3 O 4 @CF) by facile electrodeposition and annealing technologies to serve as a binder-free anode, which exhibits a large areal capacity of 0.466 mAh cm −2 and long-term cycling durability. Moreover, the flexible device is assembled by employing Fe/Fe 3 O 4 @CF-750 as anode and Ni(OH) 2 @CF as cathode. The above battery displays an enhanced operating voltage up to 1.7 V, impressive mechanical flexibility, outstanding cycling stability (86.2 % retention of initial value over 6000 charge-discharge cycles), and satisfactory voluminal capacity of 1.33 mAh cm −3 , indicating its potential application for energy supply systems of modern wearable electronics.

Rice root Fe plaque enhances oxidation of microbially available organic carbon via Fe(III) reduction-coupled microbial respiration

Jinzhi Yao,Shuping Qin,Ting Liu,Tim J. Clough,Nicole Wrage-Mönnig,Jiafa Luo,Chunsheng Hu,Tida Ge,Shungui Zhou

Poorly crystalline iron (Fe) oxides are commonly deposited on the surface of rice roots, forming an Fe plaque. This Fe plaque is an important area for Fe redox reactions because the poorly crystalline Fe is available for microbial transformations. However, it remains unclear what the mechanisms are that cause the root Fe plaque to affect CO 2 emissions from paddy soils . Thus, this study investigated the effects of Fe plaque on paddy soil CO 2 emissions and the associated mechanisms. Paddy soil with rice plant roots containing an Fe plaque-coating had 1.5-fold larger CO 2 emissions and higher expression levels of genes involved in soil carbon (C) degradation than Fe plaque-free roots, indicating that Fe plaque stimulated paddy soil derived CO 2 emissions. Fe plaque-coated rice roots, immersed in a 13 C-labeled glucose solution, emitted more CO 2 , with a higher abundance of 13 CO 2 , than the Fe plaque-free roots. These differences were not observed when the surfaces of the rice roots were sterilized. These results indicate that the Fe plaque-stimulated CO 2 emissions were due to soil microbial respiration , not autotrophic root respiration . Chelating the dissolved Fe on the root surface eliminated Fe plaque stimulation of CO 2 emissions, while Fe(III) supplementation correlated with enhanced CO 2 emissions. The stoichiometric mole ratio of the enhanced CO 2 emissions to the Fe(II) generated was comparable to the theoretical ratio of Fe(III) when used as an electron acceptor for organic C decomposition. These results showed that the Fe plaque enhancement of CO 2 emissions was coupled to Fe(III) reduction. Limiting the stimulating effects of Fe plaque on CO 2 emissions may be a potentially useful approach for mitigating organic C loss from paddy soils.

Single atom Fe-based catalyst derived from hierarchical (Fe,N)-ZIF-8/CNFs for high-efficient ORR activity

Wenfang Miao,Feirong Huang,Xiaochen Shen,Shaopeng Li,Xingru Cao,Xuefeng Zhang,Jieyi Yu,Xinglong Dong

The development of high-efficiency, stable, and low-cost Fe–N–C electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has attracted considerable attention. Herein, a stable atomically dispersed Fe–Nx-based catalyst was synthesized from a hierarchical structure involving carbon nanofiber (CNF)-supported zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-8 (ZIF-8) encapsulated Fe–Phen complex ((Fe,N)-ZIF-8/CNFs). The Fe–Nx–CNFs obtained from the pyrolysis of (Fe,N)-ZIF-8/CNFs showed a good hierarchical multi-layer structure. The natural network structure of the carbon nanofibers serves as a matrix to uniformly distribute the ZIF-8 particles, and the Fe–Nx sites derived from the Fe–Phen complex were uniformly distributed in ZIF-8 particles. It exhibits excellent ORR performance with a high half-wave potential of 0.875 V (vs. RHE), which was 55 mV higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the catalyst further revealed the origin of the ORR activity via a 4e− pathway from the precise local coordination of FeN4 sites.

Exsolution of Fe, Co, and Ni supported catalysts from LaBO3 (B = Fe, Co, Ni) perovskites for ammonia synthesis

Nan Zhou,Fanyi Kong,Ya Tang

The traditional impregnation method for preparing supported catalysts often faces challenges such as particle agglomeration and weak support–metal interactions. This study focuses on utilizing the exsolution method to prepare Fe, Co, and Ni supported catalysts from ABO3-type perovskites, aiming to overcome these challenges. Experimental results show that LaBO3 perovskites with different B site metals (B = Fe, Co, Ni) exhibit different metal exsolution kinetics in the ammonia synthesis reaction. LaNiO3 demonstrates an initial activity of 782.2 μmol g−1 h−1 within the first 2 hours of the reaction, maintaining stability beyond 80 hours. In contrast, LaFeO3 and LaCoO3 exhibit prolonged initiation periods for the metal exsolution process, reaching activities of 7873.8 μmol g−1 h−1 and 8046.7 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively, after approximately 80 hours. The degree of B-site metal exsolution was investigated using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and Rietveld refinement of XRD data, revealing exsolution rates of 72.03%, 69.3%, and 86.3% for Fe, Co, and Ni, respectively, after 80 hours of reaction. This study not only introduces the exsolution method for ammonia synthesis but also empirically validates several computational predictions, thereby supporting both theoretical and practical research.

Unveiling the role of Fe doping and Mo leaching in Fe-MoNi4@NiMoOx bifunctional catalysts for water splitting

Rui Ming,Jingjing Du,Lijian Xu,Yong Xu,Zhao Liang,Qiao Liu,Dongjiang Yang,Qiliang Wei,Weiyou Yang,Qing Shi

Fe doping reduces the Volmer barrier of MoNi 4 to enhance HER activity. • Mo leaching induces reconstruction into active NiMoFeOOH@MoO 4 2- for OER. • The AEMWE using this catalyst as dual electrodes reaches low voltages at 500 and 1000 mA cm -2 . • The electrolyzer operates stably for over 200 h, revealing great application potential in water electrolysis. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is fundamentally limited by the sluggish water dissociation step, while the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is constrained by the reconstruction behavior of the catalyst under operating conditions. Herein, we report a Fe-doped NiMoO x nanoflower decorated with Fe-doped MoNi 4 nanoparticles (Fe-MoNi 4 @NiMoO x ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the incorporation of Fe lowers the Volmer step energy barrier for MoNi 4 , thereby boosting its HER performance. For the OER, Mo leaching drives the reconstruction of MoNi 4 into catalytically active NiMoFeOOH@MoO 4 2− . Furthermore, theoretical calculations confirm that Fe/Mo doping and adsorbed MoO 4 2− facilitate rapid electron transfer within NiMoFeOOH and reduce the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the OER. As a result, the Fe-MoNi 4 @NiMoO x catalyst delivers exceptional HER and OER activities, with overpotentials as low as 102 and 212 mV for HER, and 278 and 343 mV for OER at current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, alongside excellent stability exceeding 100 h at 500 mA cm −2 . When employed as both the cathode and anode in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), this catalyst achieves current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 at low cell voltages of 2.22 and 2.56 V, respectively, while maintaining stable operation for over 200 h at 500 mA cm −2 . Fe-MoNi 4 @NiMoO x nanoflower electrode was developed for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). For HER, Fe incorporation lowers the Volmer step energy barrier of MoNi 4 , thereby boosting its HER performance. For OER, Mo leaching induces reconstruction into NiMoFeOOH@MoO 4 2− , where Fe/Mo doping and MoO 4 2− adsorption synergistically enhance electron transfer and reduce the rate-determining step barrier. Synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic H2 evolution via Fe doping and S-scheme heterojunction of MIL-68(Fe)/ZnIn2S4

Yufei Chen,Luyao Li,Ying Wang,Siqi Wan,Conghui Liu,Xingang Kong,Jianfeng Huang,Changqing Liu,Wenjie Huang,Lixiong Yin

Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution represents a promising strategy, yet constructing photocatalysts that simultaneously deliver high activity and efficient visible-light utilization remains challenging. In this work, an Fe-ion-doped metal–organic framework, MIL-68(Fe), was synthesized and employed as substrate template for in-situ growth of ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets. Subsequent one-pot synthesis yielded hollow tubular MIL-68(Fe)/ZnIn₂S₄ composite uniformly coated with ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets, effectively mitigating severe stacking inherent to pure ZnIn₂S₄. Characterization confirmed successful Fe-ion doping, which significantly enhanced visible-light absorption. The optimal composite achieved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 10.04 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , representing 9.84-fold enhancement over pristine ZnIn₂S₄. Density functional theory calculations revealed that interfacial Fe O and in O bonds facilitate built-in electric field formation within [ZnS₄] layers, confirming successful S-scheme heterojunction construction. This unique structure preserves photogenerated charge carriers with stronger redox potentials, thereby substantially boosting overall photocatalytic activity. This study offers novel approach for photocatalyst modification and demonstrates synergistic combination of ion doping with S-scheme heterojunction engineering as highly promising research direction

From lepidolite acid leachate to phosphate adsorbent: selective Al/Fe recovery and conversion to Al-Fe composite hydroxide

Shuangli Xi,Jingrui Li,Youcai Ma,Jing Guo,Wentao Li,Ting Yang,Guocan Zheng,Changyuan Tao,Zuohua Liu

Driven by the global energy transition and growing lithium demand, the utilization of low-grade lithium resources such as lepidolite has attracted increasing attention. Effective treatment of lepidolite acid leachate is crucial for mitigating environmental risks and enabling downstream lithium recovery. However, high concentrations of Al 3 + and Fe 3+ in the leachate cause conventional purification methods to suffer from poor selectivity, high lithium loss, and excessive solid-waste generation. Herein, an integrated resource-oriented strategy combining Al pre-removal, selective Al/Fe co-precipitation, precipitant regeneration, and synthesis of an Al-Fe composite hydroxide phosphate adsorbent was developed. Potassium alum crystallization removed 76.01% of Al 3+ , leaving 5.61 g·L −1 Al 3+ and 2.05 g·L −1 Fe 3+ at pH 1.65. Sodium benzoate selectively precipitated the remaining Al 3+ and Fe 3+ with > 99% removal efficiencies and < 3% Li + loss. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a binding energy order of Al 3+ > Fe 3+ > Li + , explaining the selective precipitation mechanism. After dilute H 2 SO 4 leaching, > 99% benzoic acid was regenerated, and the recovered Al/Fe solution was converted into a composite adsorbent with a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 70 mg·g −1 at pH 7 and 298.15 K. This work offers a feasible route for impurity recovery, reagent recycling, and value-added utilization of lithium leachate.

Enhanced electrochemical uranium extraction by three-dimensional zero-valent iron aerogels via dynamic Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling

Fashuai Yang,Peiren Ding,Minghan Wang,Yang Liu,Xiaowen Zhang,Yulong Yuan,Yuankui Sun,Xiaohong Guan

Hierarchically porous 3D Fe 0 aerogel overcomes agglomeration and passivation of Fe 0 nanoparticles. • Aerogel achieves 9590.25 mg/g uranium capacity which is 1.5 times that of conventional Fe 0 nanoparticles. • Electric field drives dynamic Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling on the aerogel to sustain active site regeneration for uranyl reduction. • Hierarchical pores create a localized microenvironment that enhances active site accessibility and Fe(II) retention. Electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE) is a promising strategy, yet conventional Zero-Valent Iron (Fe 0 ) nanoparticles suffer from severe agglomeration and surface passivation. Herein, we designed a hierarchically porous 3D Fe 0 aerogel that overcomes these limitations by providing an interconnected conductive network and abundant accessible active sites. At −0.2 V vs. RHE and an initial U(VI) concentration of 500 mg/L, the Fe 0 aerogel exhibited a maximum capacity of 9590.25 mg/g after 48 h electrolysis, which is approximately 1.5 times that of conventional Fe 0 nanoparticles under identical conditions. The aerogel also exhibited excellent selectivity against competing ions and good tolerance to carbonate interference. Operando Raman spectroscopy and quasi-operando XPS revealed that the external electric field drove the dynamic Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle at the solid-liquid interface, which enabled the continuous in-situ regeneration of Fe(II) as the active electron-shuttling mediator for uranyl reduction. This electrochemically mediated mechanism effectively mitigates the severe surface passivation that plagues conventional iron-based electrodes. In-situ FTIR spectroscopy hinted at the formation of a distinct interfacial microenvironment within the porous architecture, potentially involving enhanced hydrogen-bonding interactions, which may further contribute to the extraction performance. Additionally, a continuous-flow reactor employing the aerogel as a flow-through cathode operated steadily in natural seawater for 10 days, achieving a stable extraction rate of 1.26 mg/g/day. This work elucidates the molecular-scale mechanisms of interfacial electroreduction, providing an innovative paradigm for the scalable mining of critical nuclear resources from real aquatic environments. Effect of Extra-Framework Fe Species in Pt/Fe/ZSM-23 Catalysts on Hydroisomerization Performance of n-Hexadecane

Yujing Chen,Jipeng Meng,Di Bai,Chuang Li,Xiao Chen,Changhai Liang

Pt/xFe/ZSM-23 catalysts with various Fe contents were prepared to explore the influence of extra-framework Fe (EF-Fe) on the n-hexadecane (n-C16) hydroisomerization performance. UV–vis and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic results suggest that the Fe species composition was significantly different under various Fe contents, with (HO–Fe(III)–O–Fe(III)–OH) and [Fe(OH)2]+ as the main Fe species at low Fe content (<1.98 wt %), whereas the Fe2O3 clusters/particles as the dominant ones at high Fe content (>1.98 wt %). Moreover, the concentration of Brønsted acid sites and Pt dispersion could be controlled by tailoring the Fe content. Correspondingly, the hydroisomerization performance of n-C16 over Pt/xFe/ZSM-23 catalysts was dramatically changed with various Fe contents. The Pt/1.98Fe/ZSM-23 catalyst with 1.98 wt % EF-Fe content exhibited considerably excellent hydroisomerization performance, and both n-C16 conversion and selectivity to iso-hexadecane (i-C16) could reach over 80 wt % when the reaction temperature was 310 °C.
