Cu 0 coupled with O 2 was used to degrade contaminant due to in-site generation and catalysis of H 2 O 2 , while the low reactivity and active dismutation reaction of Cu + refrained the performance at acidic condition. In this study, the removal rate of 4-acetamidophenol increased from 27 % to 83.4 % with Fe 3+ spiked into the Cu 0 system within 60 min •OH was the primary reactive species in the Fe 3+ /Cu 0 system. In the Fe 3+ /Cu 0 system, Cu 0 was corroded to form Cu + by H + and O 2 , and then Cu + interacted with O 2 generating H 2 O 2 , and meanwhile Fe 3+ was reduced to Fe 2+ by Cu + and Cu 0 ; Consequently, Cu + and Fe 2+ induced H 2 O 2 to produce •OH, but Fe 2+ was easier to catalyze H 2 O 2 than Cu + at acidic pH. Except for fulvic acid , common water matrix including sulfate ion, phosphate ion, chloride ion and nitrate ion had no inhibition effect on the degradation of 4-acetamidophenol in the Fe 3+ /Cu 0 system. over 62 % of 4-acetamidophenol in tap water , Hou-lake water and well water was greatly oxidized by the Fe 3+ /Cu 0 system. Furthermore, the amount of total dissolved copper decreased to 0.895 mg/L by the method of alkali precipitation in the Fe 3+ /Cu 0 system. The study provided a theoretical direction to the Fe 3+ -enhanced Cu 0 system for purifying wastewater.

The use of cocatalyst in Fenton-like reactions has been demonstrated as a reliable approach to improve their efficiency via accelerating the circulation of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ . In this study, we for the first time used natural pyrite (FeS 2 ) as a Fenton-like cocatalyst to improve the reactivity of Fe 3+ instead of the widely investigated molybdenum disulfide that releases potential harmful molybdenum ions. The presence of FeS 2 significantly improved the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by Fe 3+ -peroxymonosulfate (PMS); near complete removal of SMX by FeS 2 -Fe 3+ -PMS was achieved, while no obvious removal of SMX by Fe 3+ -PMS was noticed. Meanwhile, the surface area-normalized rate constant of SMX degradation by FeS 2 -Fe 3+ -PMS was more than 18 times higher than that by MoS 2 -Fe 3+ -PMS. FeS 2 -Fe 3+ -PMS worked effectively in a wide range of pH values from 3.0 to 10.0. Although hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and singlet oxygen were recorded by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, only sulfate radicals were mainly responsible for the degradation. Sulfide ions were identified as one of the intermediates, but the reactive species generated by their interaction with PMS did not contribute to the degradation. FeS 2 had a good stability by continually accelerating the circulation of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ . The findings from this study reveal a highly efficient cocatalyst for Fenton-like reactions.

Trace detection of Fe 3+ ions in complex matrices requires the development of highly sensitive sensors. Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with admirable fluorescence efficiency, high photostability, and good biocompatibility have drawn special interest in fluorescent sensing of metal ions. In this work, a facile and economical microwave-assisted strategy was introduced for rapid synthesis of green fluorescence N-CDs, which were comprehensively characterized to display excitation-dependent fluorescent behavior with a high quantum yield of 18.1%, as well as good water solubility and high selectivity to Fe 3+ ions. Then, a N-CDs based fluorescent “on-off” nanosensor was successfully fabricated for sensitive assay of Fe 3+ ions. In the presence of Fe 3+ ions, fluorescence of N-CDs was remarkably quenched due to the formation of N-CDs/Fe 3+ complex through static quenching mechanism. Under the optimized synthetic and sensing conditions, the newly-developed nanosensor was free from other interfering metal ions for selective detection Fe 3+ ions ranging from 1.0 to 80.0 μM with a low limit of detection of 1.0 μM, which are comparable with other methods. Practical application in Dioscorea opposita Thunb. samples exhibited fascinating recoveries of 98.5%−109.2% with relative standard deviations lower than 4.7%. The N-CDs based fluorescent nanosensor with simple construction, high selectivity and extremely sensitivity contributed a promising tool for rapid and environmental-friendly assay of Fe 3+ ions in a large number of actual samples.

Poly(urea-siloxane) (PUSi) microspheres are synthesized through step-growth and precipitation polymerization of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (APDS) in a ternary solvent of acetonitrile/acetone/water (AN/AT/H2O). The chemical structure of the polymer is fully analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance. Highly uniform PUSi microspheres are achieved with a monomer concentration of up to 20 wt % under optimized conditions, i.e., IPDI/APDS at 7.2/2.8 (mol) in the ternary solvent AN/AT/H2O at 65/20/15 (wt). Under UV lamp irradiation, these PUSi microspheres exhibit blue fluorescence, and the emission intensity is obviously enhanced with decreased IPDI/APDS ratio under excitation of 335 nm. In addition, PUSi microsphere dispersion in water shows concentration-enhanced emission. PUSi emission is ascribed to the flexible siloxane segments, which, combined with the urea groups on PUSi chains, make the polymer chains easy to form clusters through H-bonding, in accordance with the cluster-triggered emission. PUSi microsphere dispersion in water is used as a fluorescent probe for Cr6+ and Fe3+ detection, with high sensitivity and selectivity among fifteen competitive metal ions tested. More interesting and significant, a great feature of this probe is that, in contrast to the common fluorescent probes which are mostly disposable, it is reusable after quite easy separation of the microspheres from a previous testing, a high merit of this probe. Taking into account the easy preparation, the hazardous material free process, and the facile reusability, particularly, one can conclude that this work provides a simple, green, low-cost, and truly reusable fluorescent probe for Cr6+ and Fe3+ detection.

The endohedral Zintl-ion cluster [Fe3Sn18]4− contains a linear Fe3 core with short Fe–Fe bond lengths of 2.4300(9) Å. The ground state is a septet, with significant σ and π contributions to the Fe–Fe bonds. The Sn18 cage is made up of two partially fused Sn9 fragments, and is structurally intermediate between [Ni2CdSn18]6−, where the fragments are clearly separated and [Pd2Sn18]4−, where they are completely fused. It therefore represents an intermediate stage in cluster growth. Analysis of the electronic structure suggests that the presence of the linear Fe–Fe–Fe unit is an important factor in directing reactions towards fusion of the two Sn9 units rather than the alternative of oligomerization via exo bond formation.

Polydopamine (PDA) has shown charming co-catalytic activity in the classical Fenton and Fenton-like reactions. However, the improvement is merely attributed to the Fe 2+ regeneration ability of PDA. The co-catalytic role and cycling stability of PDA in the CaO 2 based Fenton-like reaction have been rarely explored despite CaO 2 is considered safer than the liquid H 2 O 2 . In this study, floatable co-catalysts were fabricated by coating PDA on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponges. It is proven that in the composite can accelerate not only the Fe 3+ reduction but also the reaction between Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 released by CaO 2 . Therefore, lower concentrations of Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 in the CaO 2 /Fe 3+ Fenton-like system were detected respectively, along with higher efficiency in Rhodamine B (RhB) removal. In addition, in the reusing test, the RhB degradation still maintained at 81.2% after the fifth cycle. The reasons for the decreased activity were carefully investigated. First, the RhB adsorption is largely disturbed by the Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ions adsorbed during the reaction. Secondly, both declined Fe 2+ regeneration and H 2 O 2 consumption were observed, due to the reduced content of phenolic hydroxyl groups on the PDA surface.

Carbon dots doped with boron and nitrogen atoms (B, N-CDs) were designed and prepared by hydrothermal strategy using citric acid, urea and borax as raw materials. The structure and optical properties of B, N-CDs were characterized by various characterization technologies. The results showed that the B, N-CDs exhibited good mono-dispersion, excellent fluorescence stability, and high fluorescence intensity (quantum yield up to 32 %). A dual-functional Fe 3+ and pH detection platform based on B, N-CDs was constructed. The Fe 3+ sensing method based on B, N-CDs fluorescence quenching showed an excellent linear relationship between 0.044–70 μM (R 2 = 0.994), with a detection limit as low as 0.044 μM. Then, this detection method was successfully applied to the high-accuracy detection of Fe 3+ in water samples and iron supplement tablets. The study of the quenching mechanism showed that the fluorescence of B, N-CDs was quenched by Fe 3+ in two ways: static quenching and dynamic quenching. Moreover, B, N-CDs can also be used as a pH fluorescence sensor in the ranges of pH 2.0–4.8 and 5.2–7.6. The developed sensing system based on B, N-CDs has high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of Fe 3+ , and a wide detection range for pH.

Recent studies suggested that biochars could mediate the degradation of organic contaminants . The role of biochars in mediating organic contaminant degradation could be amplified in a Fenton-like reaction, and comparing biochars with varied properties may provide insightful information to understand the reaction mechanisms. In this study, biochar was applied in a Fenton-like reaction system with Fe 3+ and persulfate (PS) to degrade 2,4-dichlorophenel (2,4-DCP). Biochars with different intensities of persistent free radicals (PFRs), oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs), and redox properties were investigated regarding their roles in 2,4-DCP removal. Compared to biochar system, PS addition increased 2,4-DCP degradation and Fe 3+ addition increased its sorption . The combination of PS and Fe 3+ promoted 2,4-DCP degradation over 2 times higher. Various reactive oxygen species (ROS), including SO 4 •- , HO • , and O 2 •- , were involved in 2,4-DCP degradation, contributing to around 50% of the overall 2,4-DCP degradation. The direct electron transfer between biochar particles and 2,4-DCP contributed to the rest of 2,4-DCP degradation. A significant positive correlation was observed between 2,4-DCP degradation and electron donating capacity (EDC) or Fe 2+ . We thus concluded that EDC-involved structures in biochars could either directly donate electron to 2,4-DCP, or reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , which activated PS to generate ROS. This dual roles of biochar should be well considered in biochar application and production. This study provided a useful theoretical basis for manipulating biochar redox properties to enhance their application potential in pollution control .

Herein, fast and uniform deposition of tannic acid iron ion self-assembled metal–organic network (Fe 3+ -TA) was established using salt induction strategy over graphene oxide (GO) based styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) support (Fe 3+ -TA-GO/SBS) to prepare modified asphalt. Mechanical properties of the SBS modified asphalt (SBS-MA), GO/SBS-MA, and Fe3 + -TA-GO/SBS-MA were systematically studied via dynamic shear rheometer, multiple stress creep recovery test, and thermogravimetric analysis. The mechanism of Fe 3+ -TA-GO in SBS-MA was elucidated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results showed that the penetration of 0.10 % Fe 3+ -TA-GO/SBS-MA is 38.3 % lower than that of SBS-MA, which indicates excellent viscoelastic properties, rutting resistance, and thermal stability 0.10 % Fe 3+ -TA-GO/SBS-MA modified asphalt. This green biomimetic modification method effectively solves the agglomeration problem of GO in asphalt and promotes the formation of a well-developed SBS network structure in Fe 3+ -TA-GO/SBS-MA, which could be considered as a promising approach for the preparation of modified asphalt with enhanced properties for practical applications.

The application of all-inorganic CsPbX 3 (X = Cl − , Br − and I − ) perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) is hindered by their poor stability under different environments (moisture, UV light and high temperature). Herein, we demonstrate a novel in-situ growth and post-coating technique to prepare monodisperse spherical sandwiched structured SiO 2 @CsPbX 3 @SiO 2 perovskite composites. In this strategy, the environmental stability of CsPbX 3 PNCs is remarkably improved due to protecting evenly distribution in the surface of composites through the design of spherical sandwiched structure, and the negative effects of SiO 2 coating on photoluminescence property of CsPbX 3 PNCs could be reduced effectively. Furthermore, regular monodisperse spherical structure and uniform size of composites greatly benefit their application in relative fields. The experiment results indicate that the as-prepared product have outstanding abilities of water-, oxidation- and UV radiation resistance. Finally, the SiO 2 @CsPbBr 3 @SiO 2 perovskite composites are successfully used for highly sensitive detection of Fe 3+ in water sample. The results show limit of detection (LOD) is 3 µM and good linearity is between 10 and 70 µM ( R 2 = 0.9963). Furthermore, the proposed perovskite composites have been successfully applied for the analysis of Fe 3+ in real samples with satisfactory results.

The acquisition of high energy density for aqueous supercapacitors (SCs) is effective in extending the operating voltage and increasing the capacitance, which has drawn a great deal of attention in recent years. A scalable approach has been proposed by dip coating and carbonizing tannin-Fe 3+ (TA-Fe 3+ ) coordination compounds to prepare fabric electrodes, which can provide tannin carbon (TC) and Fe 3 O 4 for extended voltage windows and high specific capacitances, respectively. A fabric electrode with a chemically stable carbon core-shell structure was shown to improve its decomposition overpotential of water, which contributed to a wide operating voltage of 2.4 V for aqueous symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs). The assembled all solid-state SSCs achieved both an ultrahigh energy density of 51.26 μWh cm −2 , which was higher than most SSCs and even some asymmetric SCs, and the ability to connect them in series to function as practical energy storage devices. This work opens up the possibility for high operating voltage aqueous SCs and even more possibilities for SCs.

Fluorescent detection is a new spectroscopic measurement for ions sensing due to the advantages of real-time determination with high selectivity, accuracy, and low cost. However, chemosensors based on fluorescent detection are usually determined by absolute intensity from a monochromatic emission signal, which is easy to be fluctuated by the external environment, especially for Fe 3+ detection in complex fluids. Herein, we rationally design a dual-emission Eu 3+ : CDs@ZIF-8 to construct a ratiometric fluorescent sensor with self-calibrating ability for Fe 3+ determination. High efficient carbon dots (CDs) are embedded in europium ions (Eu 3+ )-doped MOF by simple stirring preparation at room temperature. The label-free ratiometric fluorescent probe (I CDs@ZIF-8 /I Eu ) exhibits simultaneous blue and red emission under the same excitation at 365 nm. Remarkably, Eu 3+ : CDs@ZIF-8 displays the superiority of high selectivity to Fe 3+ , which shows ratiometric fluorescence characteristics (I 0 /I) in a range of 0-6 μmol\L with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.897 μmol\L. Besides, the CDs-MOF nanocomposite holds good aqueous dispersibility and low cytotoxicity, which shows great potential applications in medical aid including biological detection and clinical diagnosis.
