Synergistic Enhancement of Mechanical, Thermal, and Hydrogen Barrier Properties of Nylon with PEI-GO-EVOH Nanocomposite Coatings

Rui Zhang,Xiaopei Huang,Shiyin Wang,Yufan Li,Lianghong Zhou,Francesco Barzagli,Chao’en Li

Hydrogen permeation is a major challenge in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen storage and transportation. In this study, a series of novel polyethylenimine-modified graphene oxide/polyethylene-vinyl alcohol (PEI-GO-EVOH) composites were prepared and coated on a nylon substrate for hydrogen barrier applications. Hydrophilic PEI was employed to modify graphene oxide, thereby promoting the uniform dispersion of PEI-GO within the EVOH matrix. Various characterization techniques were used to investigate how PEI-GO influences the morphology, thermal stability, mechanical properties, adhesion, hydrophilicity, and hydrogen barrier performance of the composite coatings. GO-EVOH composites were also prepared and characterized for comparison. Compared to pure EVOH and GO-EVOH, PEI-GO-EVOH composites exhibited enhanced thermal and mechanical stability, along with significantly improved hydrogen barrier properties. Hydrogen bonding between the components was proven to play a dominant role in these property improvements. At a PEI-GO content of 2 wt %, the hydrogen permeability of PEI-GO-EVOH coatings decreased by 48.4% and 42.9% compared to the bare nylon substrate and the GO-EVOH coating, respectively. When benchmarked against reported hydrogen barrier systems, the PEI-GO-EVOH coating achieves competitive performance with lower filler loading, confirming its potential as a suitable hydrogen barrier coating for nonmetallic pipelines and hydrogen storage containers.

Preparation of AuNP-CQD/PDA/GO anode for MFC and its treatment of oily sewage from ships

Wang Tianshu,Shi Peibo,Wang Mingyu,Zhang Shaojun

Oily sewage discharged from ships has brought many harms to the marine environment, even endangered marine life and human life. As a new type of water treatment technology, microbial fuel cell (MFC) can efficiently treat pollutants and recover energy, which can be converted into electric energy. However, its large internal resistance restricts its development. In order to solve the problems of low power generation performance and poor biocompatibility of microbial fuel cell, a gold nanoparticle-carbon quantum dot/polydopamine/graphene oxide/bacterial cellulose (AuNP-CQD/PDA/GO/BC) electrode was prepared, and it was applied to the treatment of oily sewage from ships. Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and contact angle measuring instrument were used to characterize the electrode. The results show that PDA bridges GO and AuNP-CQD particles through the electrostatic interaction/π-π bond/hydrogen bonding, respectively. This attracts a large number of microorganisms to attach to the surface of the porous anode material, which greatly improves the activity and quantity of microorganisms. Moreover, the maximum power density of AuNP-CQD/PDA/GO/BC electrode is 2624.91 mW/m 2 , which obviously improves the electrochemical performance of MFC. The oil content of the treated water is ≤ 15 mg/L, reaching the discharge of MARPOL 73/78 convention. Therefore, the proposed approach has paved new dimensions in not only the preparation of a new composite electrode materials but also its applications as effective degradation of ship oily sewage in MFC.

Preparation of three-dimensional 2-mercaptothiazoline modified GO aerogel for selective adsorption of Cu2+ in aqueous solution

Lu-Qing Xie,Sui Peng,Ya-Nan Xin,Bo Liu,Xin-Yu Jiang,Jin-Gang Yu

A novel 3-dimensional graphene oxide/2-mercaptothiazoline (3D GO-MT) aerogel was prepared by using GO and MT which contains heteroatoms (nitrogen-, sulfur-) through a facile hydrothermal assembly process and a following freeze-drying technology . The effects of hydrothermal reaction temperature and GO-to-MT mass ratio on the physicochemical properties of the composites were investigated. The removal of Cu 2+ from aqueous solution by 3D GO-MT aerogels was evaluated. The results showed that the composite (GO-MT 1:3/100 °C ) with GO-to-MT mass ratio of 1:3 prepared at 100 °C had the highest adsorption capacity for Cu 2+ (0.5299 mmol g −1 ). In a bicomponent system of Cu 2+ /Pb 2+ , GO-MT 1:3/100 °C exhibited higher adsorption selectivity for Cu 2+ . And the distribution coefficients K of GO-MT 1:3/100 ° C for Cu 2+ /Y 3+ , Cu 2+ /Nd 3+ in the bicomponent systems were 0.6224 and 0.1253, respectively. The morphology and composition of GO-MT 1:3/100 °C , as well as the adsorption mechanism for Cu 2+ were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The presence of nitrogen and sulfur on MT heterocycle promoted the possible assembly of MT with GO through π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. Additionally, the existence of these heteroatoms in MT dominated the metal-chelate affinity of 3D GO-MT aerogel for selective adsorption of Cu 2+ . The fitted data of kinetics and thermodynamics showed that the adsorption process followed linear pseudo-second-order kinetics and linear Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption process is non spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism of GO-MT 1:3/100 °C for Cu 2+ involves coordination, cation-π electron interaction, electrostatic attraction and other intermolecular interactions. 3D GO-MT 1:3/100 °C can be used as an adsorbent material for selective adsorption/enrichment of Cu 2+ in aqueous solution.

Design of hybrid g-C3N4/GO/MCE photocatalytic membranes with enhanced separation performance under visible-light irradiation

Junyang Pan,Dan Hua,Yiping Hong,Xi Cheng,Fangsong Guo,Kok Bing Tan,Ziqi Zhong,Guowu Zhan

Photocatalytic membranes with concurrent catalytic oxidation and separating functions possess promising potentials for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. Herein, we designed a hybrid photocatalytic membrane ( viz. , g-C 3 N 4 /GO/MCE) by vacuum-filtration-assisted assembling method, consisting of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets as a top layer, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as an interlayer, and commercial mixed cellulose ester (MCE) as a substrate layer. The microstructures, chemical compositions, and physicochemical properties of the designed g-C 3 N 4 /GO/MCE membranes were systematically characterized by a series of characterization techniques. Particularly, photocatalysis-filtration reactor cells were designed for the evaluation of the simultaneous separation and photocatalytic degradation performance in a single unit using both organic dyes and antibiotics as modeling pollutants in wastewater. Four parameters were adopted to represent the integrated photocatalysis-filtration performance of our designed photocatalytic membranes, including permeance ( P ), rejection ( R’ , filtration alone), removal ( R , combined photocatalysis-filtration under light-irradiation), and degradation rate ( D ). The hybrid membranes showed superior permeance and solute removal under visible-light irradiation (300 W, λ  > 420 nm), in which the permeance was 20% higher than that of no-irradiation conditions. In addition, 10 consecutive cycling tests and light-on/off cycles of the as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 /GO/MCE membrane toward RhB showed quite stable permeance in the range of 268.9 to 352.9 L h −1 m −2 bar −1 , and the removal was maintained in the range of 88.4% to 95.4%, indicating excellent long-term stability. Remarkably, it also exhibited good removal performance of antibiotics ( e.g. , ofloxacin, norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, and roxithromycin). Accordingly, the designed hybrid g-C 3 N 4 /GO/MCE photocatalytic membranes with excellent photocatalytic activity and photocatalysis-filtration performance are promising for wastewater treatment and water purification applications.

Graphene Oxide/Styrene-Butadiene Latex Hybrid Aerogel with Improved Mechanical Properties by PEI Grafted GO and CNT

Zetian Zhao,Lina Zhang,Yinghu Song,Lichun Ma,Jialiang Li,Min Zhao,Xueliang Ji,Jianfei Gao,Guojun Song,Xiaoru Li

Graphene oxide aerogel (GOA) has wide application prospects due to its low density and high porosity. However, the poor mechanical properties and unstable structure of GOA have limited its practical applications. In this study, polyethyleneimide (PEI) was used to graft onto the surface of GO and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to improve compatibility with polymers. Composite GOA was prepared by adding styrene-butadiene latex (SBL) to the modified GO and CNTs. The synergistic effect of PEI and SBL, resulted in an aerogel with excellent mechanical properties, compressive resistance, and structural stability. When the ratio of SBL to GO and GO to CNTs was 2:1 and 7:3, respectively, the obtained aerogel performance was the best, and the maximum compressive stress was 784.35% higher than that of GOA. The graft of PEI on the surface of GO and CNT could improve the mechanical properties of the aerogel, with greater improvements observed with grafting onto the surface of GO. Compared with GO/CNT/SBL aerogel without PEI grafting, the maximum stress of GO/CNT–PEI/SBL aerogel increased by 5.57%, that of GO–PEI/CNT/SBL aerogel increased by 20.25%, and that of GO–PEI/CNT–PEI/SBL aerogel increased by 28.99%. This work not only provided a possibility for the practical application of aerogel, but also steered the research of GOA in a new direction. Keywords:synergistic effect;mechanical properties;graphene oxide aerogel;polyethyleneimide;styrene-butadiene latex

Vertical and uniform growth of MoS2 nanosheets on GO nanosheets for efficient mechanical reinforcement in polymer scaffold

Pei Feng,Saipu Shen,Liuyimei Yang,Ye Kong,Sheng Yang,Cijun Shuai

Graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), have drawn more and more attention as reinforcement in polymer. However, their large specific surface area and strong van der Waals forces result in serious aggregations in polymer matrix, which restrains the reinforcement effect. In this study, MoS2 nanosheets were in situ synthesised vertically and uniformly on the surface of GO nanosheets with the help of a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) assisted hydrothermal process to facilitate their dispersion in polylactic acid (PLLA) scaffold manufactured via selective laser sintering (SLS). The experimental results revealed that the 1.5 wt% GO/MoS2 nanocomposite exhibited better dispersion state compared with the 1.5 wt% GO and 1.5 wt% MoS2 in PLLA matrix. Therefore, the PLLA scaffold loading 1.5 wt% GO/MoS2 presented 10.2 and 1461 MPa of tensile strength and modulus with enhancement of 61% and 58%, respectively, compared with the pure PLLA scaffold. The reinforcement mechanisms mainly included crack deflection, crack bridging, crack pinning and pulling out of GO/MoS2. What’s more, the GO/MoS2-PLLA scaffold possessed benign cytocompatibility for cell behaviour, suggesting hopeful applications in bone defect repair.

Fast and efficient capture of iodide ions by silver-modified GO nanosheets: From adsorption to membrane filtration

Li Chen,Rui Cui,Jiangdong Dai,Yi Wang,Jianming Pan

The treatment of radioactive contaminated water is highly valued all over the world nowadays. In this article, an easy-operated strategy with clear principle for the efficient purification of radioactive iodide wastewater was proposed. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were grown in-situ at the oxygen-containing defect sites on the edge of GO nanosheets, and the nanocomposites were tested for both adsorption and membrane filtration. HRTEM and XRD results confirmed the crystalline structure of Ag and AgI before and after the adsorption. Fast adsorption equilibrium of iodides was observed within 15 min, and theoretical maximum equilibrium capacity was calculated as high as 150.17 mg g −1 . Dead-end filtration performances of this Ag-GO stacked membranes were further studied from the view of avoiding secondary radionuclides pollution caused by the difficult recovery of nano powders. The rejection ratio of iodides kept constant which was higher than 90 % during the first thirty minutes. AgI precipitation adsorption and size sieving of confined GO interlayers by the stacked Ag-GO membranes happened simultaneously. Suitable concentration of NaOH can wash out most of the iodide ions entrapped between the confined GO interlayers, and desorb part of the AgI meanwhile. All these results elucidated the application of these Ag-GO NPs for the fast and efficient adsorption of iodides are the most prominent advantage, and the adsorbents exhibited desired adsorption irreversibility. Ag-GO filtration membranes could help these nano powders get an easy solid–liquid separation step.

Performance of Coating Based on β-CD-g-GO/epoxy Composites for the Corrosion Protection of Steel

Chun Feng,Lijuan Zhu,Yaqiong Cao,Yin Di,Zongxue Yu,Guhui Gao

This study reports a new strategy for enhancing the anti-corrosion properties of epoxy coatings. For this purpose, beta-cyclodextrin-graphene oxide (β-CD-g-GO) nanosheets were synthesized via anchoring beta-cyclodextrin on a graphene oxide surface in the presence of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560). The structure of the material was characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR and TGA. The inclusion of 2 wt. % GO and β-CD-g-GO nanosheets in epoxy resin remarkably enhanced the corrosion protection performance of the material relative to that of pure epoxy coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements revealed that the impedance of the epoxy coating was improved after the addition of 2 wt. % GO and β-CD-g-GO nanosheets. The most pronounced improvement in the properties of the epoxy coating was obtained using β-CD-g-GO nanosheets. Scratches tests confirmed the reduced steel substrate corrosion in the case of epoxy coating that included β-CD-g-GO nanosheets compared to the corrosion obtained for other samples.

A long-term anti-corrosion and cathodic delamination resistant epoxy coating based on COF grafted GO nanofillers

Tianxiang Sun,Kai Jin,Wei Wang,Wen Li,Tong Wang,Tengxun Yang,Jia Cheng,Zhipeng Zhao,Shougang Chen

Here, a long-term anti-corrosive epoxy (EP) coating based on nano-hybrid filler was developed. The surface of graphene oxide (GO) was aminated with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), and then the porous covalent organic framework (COF) was in-situ grown on amino functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) nanosheets by Schiff-based reaction to prepare FGO-COF nanofillers. Different characterization methods proved the successful modification of GO nanosheets with COF particles. The excellent water resistance of composite coatings was characterized through contact angle, adhesion, and water uptake tests. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and molecular dynamics (MD) methods showed that the grafting of COF enhanced the dispersion and compatibility of GO in the coating. EIS measurements, salt spray analysis and cathodic delamination test indicated the significant improvements in the protective properties of the composite coatings compared with pure EP coating. The low-frequency impedance modulus of 1% FGO-COF composite coating reached higher than 6.8 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 after immersed in sea water for 60 days. In addition, the 1% FGO-COF composite coating performed only 34% delamination ratio after 120 h cathodic delamination test.

Preparation and anti-migration performance of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer composites modified with GO-SiO2 hybrid nanomaterials

Zhehong Lu,Yubing Hu,Tengyue Zhang,Hao Li,Haoran Bai,Guangpu Zhang,Fan Guo,Wei Jiang

The anti-migration ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) inhibitor coating was prepared by using EPDM as a composite matrix and silicon-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-SiO 2 ) as modifiers to prevent the migration of energetic plasticizers in propellants. The anti-migration performance at different temperatures was analyzed by investigating the diffusion of dioctyl sebacate (DOS) using thermal analysis and immersion tests. After adding 1.0 wt% GO-SiO 2 , the overall performance of the inhibitor coating was the best, and the concentration of DOS that migrated into the inhibitor coating at 30°C was reduced from 45.1% to 38.8% (13.9% decrease). The results confirmed that the introduction of GO-SiO 2 prevented the migration of dioctyl sebacate to the EPDM inhibitor coating. The scanning electron microscopy results showed that GO-SiO 2 was well-dispersed in the inhibitor coating, and the tensile strength increased from 1.80 to 2.11 MPa. Migration kinetics analysis showed that the anti-migration performance was closely related to the crosslink density.

Skin-mimetic assembly strategy for fabricating a transparent and highly anti-corrosive FSO-GO/epoxy nanocomposite coating

Yang Lei,Xinhai Zhang,Qiang Liu,Yulin Tao,Yaojie Sun,Bo You

A transparent and anti-corrosive coating is of great importance for the protection of valuable articles, historical relics, and metal. However, there is a significant challenge due to the trade-off between high transparency and pleased anti-corrosive performance. The barrier function of skin, derived from the “brick and mortar” microstructure where hydrophobic corneocytes are parallelly embedded in lipids of the skin stratum corneum, offers an admirable concept to solve the problem. Herein, a novel bio-inspired assembly strategy is implemented to fabricate transparent and high-performance anti-corrosive epoxy nanocomposite coatings (Bio-MFICs), cooperating with superhydrophobic magnetic responsive graphene oxide nanosheets (FSO-GO) parallelly aligned in epoxy resin via magnetic-field-induced assembly and bridging structure further forming during curing process. The structure of Bio-MFICs is highly consistent with the “brick and mortar” structure of the skin stratum corneum, where FSO-GO nanosheets act as “corneocytes” and epoxy matrix acts as “lipids”. The subtle skin-mimetic structure contributes to the excellent anti-corrosive performance of Bio-MFICs because of the prolonged and blocked diffusion pathway of corrosive media. As a result, the resistance of Bio-MFIC- 3 (0.75 wt% filler content) remains 4.17×10 7  Ω·cm −2 , which is 43 times that of the pure epoxy coating, and the logarithm of breaking point frequency is quite low as −1.05 after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 28 days. Moreover, the transparency of the Bio-MFIC- 3 is highly close to that of the pure epoxy coating. This work provides an effective method of constructing transparent protective materials to reduce the loss of materials and achieve the goal of energy-saving and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

Effect of CeO2–GO Nanocomposite on the Anticorrosion Properties of Epoxy Coating in Simulated Acid Rain Solution

Ruidan Liu,Xiaoyan Liu,Heng Yang,Handuo Jie,Tianyu Li,Kai Lyu,Surendra P. Shah

The lamellar structure of graphene oxide and the filling effect of nano-cerium oxide particles together provide a good barrier and stability to coating. In this paper, cerium oxide-graphene oxide (4:1) nanocomposite was prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The effect of cerium oxide–graphene oxide (4:1) nanocomposite on the anticorrosion properties of epoxy coating in simulated acid rain solution was studied by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky curve, Tafel curve, and micromorphological characterization, in order to compare it with pure epoxy coating, graphene oxide epoxy coating, and cerium oxide epoxy coating. The obtained results showed that cerium oxide–graphene oxide (4:1) epoxy coating’s protection efficiency was as high as 98.62%. These results indicated that cerium oxide–graphene oxide modified anticorrosive coating had an excellent application prospect in an acid rain environment. Meanwhile, owing to the poor protection ability of epoxy resin and unstably hydrolysis product of CeO2to the acidic medium, the resistance of CeO2–GO (4:1)/EP coating to acidic corrosive medium was relatively poorer than that of neutral and saline-alkali corrosive medium.Keywords:CeO2;nanocomposite;electrochemistry;EIS;acid rain
