In this work, the blue emission carbon dots (FA-CDs) are synthesized by one-pot solvothermal method by using folic acid as precursor. The FA-CDs emitted bright emission at 445 nm when excited at 360 nm with the QY of 31.2 %. The FA-CDs exhibit sensitive quenching response to Hg 2+ with variable concentrations systematically, which determined FA-CDs can be employed as fluorescent probe, with a reliable linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and Hg 2+ concentration, and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.29 nM. Notably, the quenched FA-CDs can be recovered by using EDTA saturated solution with the emission comparable to initial in succession. The FA-CDs based paper sensor can be explored with similar detection performance, and it can also be restored by EDTA saturated solution. Both the restored CDs and paper sensor can be reused in the next turn for detecting Hg 2+ , which allowed the FA-CDs and their paper sensor can be serviced as sustainable probe for Hg 2+ detection. The visual LOD of paper sensor can be determined at 0.1 μM, notably, the paper sensor can be reused at least 3 times with good performance, which is beneficial to environmental protection and saving resources. Possess excellent water solubility and non-toxic properties, the cellular imaging of FA-CDs was evaluated with excellent quality fluorescent image results. The FA-CDs provide a promising convenient fluorescent probe for multi-application in detection and imaging.

In the present study, a novel self-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor which combined self-enhanced ECL composite as signal response element and aptamer as the specific recognition element was firstly proposed for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg 2+ . Innovatively, the luminophore Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -doped silica nanoparticles functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (NH 2 – [email protected] 2 ) and the co-reactant nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) were bound together to form the self-enhanced ECL composite, NH 2 – [email protected] 2 -NGQDs, by electrostatic adsorption. Satisfactorily, high and stable luminous efficiency of NH 2 – [email protected] 2 -NGQDs was obtained benefited from the short electron transfer distance and low energy loss of self-enhanced-typal ECL composite. For the fabrication of the self-enhanced ECL aptasensor for Hg 2+ detection, the Hg 2+ aptamer, of which one end was connected to NH 2 – [email protected] 2 -NGQDs, and the other end was fixed on glass carbon electrode (GCE) surface through Au–S bond, was served as a bridge. Upon the addition of Hg 2+ , the aptamer was bent due to the formation of thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T-Hg 2+ -T) specific structure, which caused the self-enhanced ECL composite was close to the GCE surface. On this basis, a linearly enhanced ECL signal was acquired with the concentration of Hg 2+ in the range of 5.0 × 10 −11 M − 1.0 × 10 −6 M with excellent selectivity , repeatability and stability in 3 min for each assay. In addition, the proposed aptasensor showed satisfying accuracy and practicability for Hg 2+ analysis in tap and canal water verified by the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method.

As a virulent heavy metal ion, Hg 2+ will lead to a serious threat to ecosystem and human health. In this work, we reported a chitosan-naphthalimide fluorescent probe CS-NA-ITC for specific recognition and efficient adsorption of Hg 2+ . CS-NA-ITC showed no fluorescence in solution state, while the fluorescence intensity increased obviously at the presence of Hg 2+ , accompanied by the fluorescence color becomes from colorless to bright yellow. It displayed favorable properties like low detection limit (73 nM), extensive pH detection range (5–10) and excellent anti-interference ability. The binding pattern of CS-NA-ITC to Hg 2+ was verified by Job's plot, XPS analysis and FT-IR test. In addition, CS-NA-ITC was utilized to recognition of Hg 2+ in actual water and soil samples and seafood products. Furthermore, the CS-NA-ITC hydrogel could be employed as an efficient Hg 2+ adsorbent with good reusability, which adsorption ability was enhanced compared to chitosan hydrogel.

Smartphone-assisted fluorescence and colorimetric methods for the on-site detection of Hg2+and Cl−were established based on the oxidase-like activity of the Au–Hg alloy on the surface of Au/Cu/Ti3C2NSs. The Au nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed via in-situ growth on the surface of Cu/Ti3C2NSs and characterized by different characterization techniques. After the addition of Hg2+, the formation of Hg–Au alloys could promote the oxidization of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to generate a new fluorescence emission peak of 2,3-diaminopenazine (ADP) at 570 nm. Therefore, a turn-on fluorescence method for the detection of Hg2+was established. As the addition of Cl−can influence the fluorescence of ADP, the fluorescence intensity was constantly quenched to achieve the continuous quantitative detection of Cl−. Therefore, a turn-off fluorescence method for the detection of Cl−was established. This method had good linear ranges for the detection of Hg2+and Cl−in 8.0–200.0 nM and 5.0–350.0 µM, with a detection limit of 0.8 nM and 27 nM, respectively. Depending on the color change with the detection of Hg2+and Cl−, a convenient on-site colorimetric method for an analysis of Hg2+and Cl−was achieved by using digital images combined with smartphones (color recognizers). The digital picture sensor could analyze RGB values in concentrations of Hg2+or Cl−via a smartphone app. In summary, the proposed Au/Cu/Ti3C2NSs-based method provided a novel and more comprehensive application for environmental monitoring.Keywords:Au/Cu/Ti3C2NS;Au–Hg alloy;oxidase-like activity;smartphone;colorimetric detection

Heavy metal pollution is of great threat to public health and the environment, and an effective method to detect and remove toxic heavy ions from water is highly desirable. The emerging covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-defined pore structures and specific functional units provide an excellent platform for fluorescent sensing. The hydrazone-linked framework material SH-COF with excellent hydrophilicity and abundant chelating sites was synthesized by bottom-up strategy under solvothermal conditions. The resultant SH-COF with specific binding sites was proposed to detect and remove Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ . The SH-COF also exhibited the characteristics of high selectivity, high sensitivity, a lower limit of detection (0.244 μM for Cu 2+ and 0.239 μM for Hg 2+ ), and real-time response. Furthermore, the highly selective interaction of Cu 2+ or Hg 2+ with SH-COF was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectra. A proposed sensing mechanism of COF for Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ was presented. This research also demonstrates the great potential of COFs in practical sensing applications.

Chitosan as the plentiful and easily available natural polymer, its solubility in organic solvents is still a challenge. In this article, three different chitosan-based fluorescent co-polymers were prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. They could not only dissolve in several organic solvents, but also could selectively recognize Hg 2+ /Hg + ions. Firstly, allyl boron-dipyrrolemethene (bodipy) was prepared, and used as one of the monomers in the subsequent RAFT polymerization. Secondly, chitosan-based chain transfer agent (CS-RAFT) was synthesized through classical reactions for dithioester preparation. Finally, three methacrylic ester monomers and bodipy bearing monomers were polymerized and grafted as branched-chains onto chitosan respectively. By RAFT polymerization, three chitosan-based macromolecular fluorescent probes were prepared. These probes could be readily dissolved in DMF, THF, DCM , and acetone. All of them exhibited the ‘turn-on’ fluorescence with selective and sensitive detection for Hg 2+ /Hg + . Among them, chitosan-g-polyhexyl methacrylate-bodipy (CS-g-PHMA-BDP) had the best performance, its fluorescence intensity could be increased to 2.7 folds. In addition, CS-g-PHMA-BDP could be processed into films and coatings. When loading on the filter paper, fluorescent test paper was prepared and it could realize the portable detection of Hg 2+ /Hg + ions. These organic-soluble chitosan-based fluorescent probes could enlarge the applications of chitosan.

Remediation of Hg 2+ pollution in wastewater is imminent. Herein, a Metal-Organic Framework hybrid Uio-DBD-x was designed and synthesized via rational introducing the 5-Diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol Dihydrochloride (DBD) molecule onto parent Uio-66-NH 2 . By optimizing the synthesis conditions, the material exhibited better adsorption performance when x = 1. The characteristics including crystallinity, morphology, and pore size were analyzed. 12.64 nm for pore diameter and 493.73 m 2 /g for surface areas of Uio-DBD-1 were obtained. Subsequently, the adsorption performance of Uio-DBD-1 towards Hg 2+ was studied under different pH, dosage, concentration, and time. The corresponding maximum adsorption capacity of 423.10 mg/g and equilibrium time of 10 min was achieved. Remarkably, Hg 2+ concentration could be reduced below the emission limit (0.05 mg/L). Furthermore, the selectivity and reusability of the adsorbent were investigated, and the results manifested that Uio-DBD-1 maintains high removal efficiency (82.10%) after 6 times recycles. The possible adsorption mechanism could be ascribed to the strong interaction (chelation, proton exchange, and coordination) between Hg 2+ and –NH 2 /-SH groups. This work breaks new ground in functional material design and paves the way for wastewater treatment.

Aniline is an organic pollutant with carcinogenicity and teratogenicity, while F - and Hg 2+ are toxic ions that are easily soluble in water. When they are released to the environment, they will pose a threat to human health. Designing a material that can simultaneously detect three types of pollutants is of great significance. In this paper, a novel rare earth metal organic framework material (Eu-MOF) with three-dimensional structure based on 1-methylimidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid was synthesized for the first time through solvent thermal method. It has excellent luminescent performance and can be used as a multifunctional fluorescent probe to detect aniline, F - , and Hg 2+ based on photoinduced electron transfer, energy competitive absorption, and ion exchange mechanisms, with detection limits of 1.79 × 10 -8 , 8.13 × 10 -8 , and 8.83 × 10 -7 M, respectively. It is worth noting that Eu-MOF can detect F - and Hg 2+ in real water samples, such as lake water and green tea water, with favorable recovery rates.

A stable silver nanoparticles/carbon quantum dots (Ag/CQDs) composite was prepared by using CQDs as reducing and stabilizing agent. The CQDs synthesized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) showed an extraordinary reducibility. When Hg 2+ was presented in the Ag/CQDs composite solution, a color change from yellow to colorless was observed, accompanied by a shift of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and decrease in absorbance of the Ag/CQDs composite. On the basis of the further studies on TEM, XPS and XRD analysis, the possible mechanism is attributed to the formation of a silver-mercury amalgam. Hence, a two dimensional sensing platform for Hg 2+ detection was constructed upon the Ag/CQDs composite. Based on the change of absorbance, a good linear relationship was obtained from 0.5 to 50 μM for Hg 2+ . And the limit of detection for Hg 2+ was as low as 85 nM, representing high sensitivity to Hg 2+ . More importantly, the proposed method also exhibits a good selectivity toward Hg 2+ over other metal ions. Besides, this strategy demonstrates practicability for the detection of Hg 2+ in real water samples with satisfactory results.

A rapid synthetic method for highly photoluminescent (PL) nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) was developed by using a microreactor with foamy copper having different porosities. By taking advantage of the foamy copper, we obtained a high quantum yield (QY) of 84.1%, which was more efficient than most of the previous reports. Compared to the procedure without adding foamy copper, the QY when foamy copper was used was two times higher. The formation mechanism of the N-CQDs, which involved molecular condensation and the formation of carbon cores, was demonstrated. To explore the relationship between the use of a microreactor with foamy copper having different porosities and the PL properties of the N-CQDs, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was employed. The results show that the surface functional groups and elemental contents influence the PL emission. We further demonstrate the application of the N-CQDs as probes for heavy metal ion detection. The results indicated that N-CQDs are very suitable for use as nanoprobes for Hg 2+ ion detection and that the lowest detection limit (LOD) for Hg 2+ is 2.104 nM, which is superior to many other research studies. This method highlights that the value of microreactor synthetic system as a tool for the environmental and hazard detection.

In this work, we presented a novel dual fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system for the simultaneous detection of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ . This system employed two color upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as the donors, and controlled gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the acceptors. The two donor–acceptor pairs were fabricated by hybridizing the aptamers and their corresponding complementary DNA. Thus, the green and red upconversion fluorescence could be quenched because of a good overlap between the UCNPs fluorescence emission and the AuNPs absorption spectrum. In the presence of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ , the aptamers preferred to bind to their corresponding analytes and formed a G-quadruplexes structure for Pb 2+ and the hairpin-like structure for Hg 2+ . As a result, the dual FRET was disrupted, and the green and red upconversion fluorescence was restored. Under optimized experimental conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity increased as the metal ion concentrations were increased, allowing for the quantification of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ . The relationships between the fluorescence intensity and plotting logarithms of ion concentrations were linear in the range from 0.1 to 100 nM for Pb 2+ and 0.5 to 500 nM for Hg 2+ , and the detection limits of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ were 50 pM and 150 pM, respectively. As a practical application, the aptasensor was used to monitor Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ levels in naturally contaminated samples and human serum samples. Ultimately, this type of dual FRET could be used to detect other metal ions or contaminants in food safety analysis and environment monitoring.

A simple and reliable colorimetric detection system based on anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is proposed for rapid detection of Hg 2+ with high selectivity and sensitivity. O -phenylenediamine (OPD) can cause the aggregation of AuNPs due to formation of the strong covalent NH Au bond, and then induce color change of the AuNPs solution from red to blue. However, in the presence of Hg 2+ , OPD prefers to combine with Hg 2+ rather than AuNPs resulting in inhibition of the color change. Based on the anti-aggregation mechanism, Hg 2+ can be detected by observing the color change of AuNPs solution containing OPD. After optimization, the selectivity of this Hg 2+ detection system by the naked eyes and UV–vis spectra is excellent comparing with other ions. The limit of the detection (LOD) is 0.1 μM by the naked eyes and 5.0 nM by UV–vis spectroscopy, which is lower than the mercury toxic level (10 nM) defined by US Environmental Protection Agency. It's a good linear relationship between A 520 / A 680 and Hg 2+ concentration from 0.01 μM to 2.0 μM, which is used for the quantitative assay of Hg 2+ . The applicability of our detection system is also verified by analysis of Hg 2+ in tap water and lake water.
