The random arrangement of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets within the organic coating forms a conductive network, thereby accelerating galvanic corrosion and exacerbating metal deterioration. Inspired by ordered layered structure of natural nacre, this study has successfully fabricated a biomimetic GO/epoxy coating on Mg alloy to prevent corrosion and reduce wear. By polymerizing polyaniline (PANI) and dopamine (PDA) on the GO, GO/PANI/PDA sheets with good dispersibility and impermeability are obtained. Subsequently, the bio-inspired coating (I-GO/PANI/PDA-WEP) with “nacre-like” structure is prepared via alternately spraying GO/PANI/PDA layers with epoxy layers. The anisotropic electrical conductivity of the coating is derived from the ordered distribution of GO/PANI/PDA layers to the Mg substrate, which can conduct electricity more efficiently in-plane while suppressing longitudinal electron transport. The enhanced physical barrier effect by the “nacre-like” structure and the electron suppression effect can improve anticorrosion performance. The coating reduces the corrosion rate by 6.3 × 10 5 times in comparison to Mg alloy. Moreover, this coating shows excellent wear resistance, which protects Mg alloy from friction and wear with a reduction in wear rate by approximately 96%. This bio-inspired approach offers a unique strategy for fabricating GO composite coatings with exceptional performance. Highlights The corrosion/wear resistance of I-GO/PANI/PDA has greatly improved. GO/PANI/PDA coating exhibits excellent anisotropic conductivity. Galvanic corrosion is inhibited due to the addition of GO/PANI/PDA. “Nacre-like” structure shows high labyrinth effect. The ordered orientation of GO/PANI/PDA suppresses out-plane electron transport.

Dynamic alterations in metal ion concentrations are observed in the pathological process of spinal cord injury (SCI). Hence, strategically supplying metal ions in a phase-adapted manner is promising to facilitate injured spinal cord repair by preventing pathological damage. To achieve this, a chimeric hydrogel microsphere with Mg 2+ -crosslinked methacrylate gelatin as the "shell" and Zn 2+ -loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) as the "core" was designed. The chimeric microspheres allow continuous delivery of Mg 2+ or Zn 2+ at the exact required phase in SCI pathological process. Early release of Mg 2+ reduced inflammation by diminishing the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines due to changes in macrophage polarization, which further suppressed scar formation to create an ideal space for neural regeneration. The subsequently released Zn 2+ at the late phase effectively promoted neural cell proliferation and regeneration, which was accompanied by activation of mature neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons, leading to significant behavioral recovery. Thus, this study underscores the critical role of metal ions at different phases of injured spinal cord repair and describes the construction of an injectable chimeric hydrogel microsphere carrying distinct metal ions with a core-shell structure. Chimeric microspheres overcome the discrepancy between the inflammatory response and neural regeneration and are a promising therapeutic strategy for injured spinal cord repair.

Isomerization of glucose to fructose is a key step in achieving high value conversion of biomass. Lignin nanosphere (LN) showing hollow structure were successfully prepared using lignin oligomers as carbon precursors and self-assembly method. On this basis, Mg and Al were doped into lignin nanospheres by electrostatic and coordination interactions to obtain a heterogeneous catalyst (Mg x Al y /LN) with the coexistence of Brønsted base and Lewis acid. In this catalytic system, the synergistic effect of Al(OH) 3 and MgO as the active center of the catalyst promoted the formation of intermediates for the isomerization of glucose to fructose. DFT analysis show that Al(OH) 3 plays a greater role than MgO in promoting the isomerization of acyclic glucose to form fructose. When the Mg/Al ratio of 2:1, the yield of Mg 2 Al 1 /LN catalyzed isomerization of glucose to fructose under microwave irradiation can reach as high as 57.2 %, which could be reused for 5 times and still remain its initial activity. The activation energy was about 39.8 kJ/mol, which was lower than that of most heterogenous catalytic systems, showing good catalytic performance and potential for application.

Mg(SO 3 CF 3 ) 2 (Mg(OTf) 2 ) is a simple and cost-effective magnesium salt, which can promote the future applications of rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs). However, the simple Mg(OTf) 2 /ether electrolytes suffer from poor electrochemical properties due to the low solubility of Mg(OTf) 2 and the serious decomposition passivation of the [Mg 2+ -OTf − ] ion pair on Mg. Herein, the OTf − anion is successfully grafted on low-cost fluoride boronic esters (B(OC x H y F 2x-y+1 ) 3 ) to obtain the asymmetric and weak-coordination boron-center [B(OC x H y F 2x-y+1 ) 3 OTf] − anion in ether electrolytes. The -OCH 2 CF 3 (TFE) groups in B(TFE) 3 effectively realize the charge delocalization of the OTf − and B-O plane, restraining the independent decomposition of the [Mg 2+ -OTf − ] ion pair. The co-decomposition of the asymmetric [B(TFE) 3 OTf] − induces the formation of the B-containing organic/inorganic interphase, thus achieving a reversible Mg plating/stripping. After the further solubilization reaction, the obtained electrolyte exhibits a high average coulombic efficiency of 98.13% and long-term cycling stability (1000 h). Notably, the long cycling life (capacity retention of 90.2% after 600 cycles at 1 C) and high-rate capacity (43.0 mAh g −1 at 5 C) of the Mg/Mo 6 S 8 full cell demonstrate a favorable electrolyte/cathode compatibility. This work brings new insights to design the new-type and low-cost Mg-salts and high-performance electrolytes for commercial RMBs.

Lithium and its compounds are critical strategic resources with wide-ranging applications. This study developed a bipolar membrane precipitation coupled electrodialysis enrichment (BMp-EDe) process for extracting lithium from brines with an Mg/Li ratio of 20. The method is based on phase separation achieved through precipitation-coupled ion permeation and a synergistic mechanism for ion enrichment, resulting in significant process intensification. Key factors such as current density, molar ratio between diluate and base chambers, and base chamber concentration were optimized to control nucleation and prevent membrane fouling. Under conditions of current density ranging from 200 to 400 A·m −2 and a molar ratio of the diluate chamber to the base chamber between 13 and 16, the magnesium removal rate in the BMp-EDe process is found to exceed 99.90 %, with a separation factor greater than 20,000. The optimal separation factor is observed to reach 40,244, with a magnesium removal rate as 99.96 % and a lithium recovery rate as 95.32 %. With optimized operation conditions, the energy consumption of magnesium precipitation decreased from 11.89 kWh·kg −1 (Mg 2+ ) to 7.97 kWh·kg −1 (Mg 2+ ). Thus, an alternative method is presented that employs commercial bipolar membranes to achieve ultra-high magnesium‑lithium separation efficiency. Additionally, a mechanism for the continuous operation of the magnesium precipitation chamber is validated, which can effectively prevent membrane fouling.

Oxides with the ABO 3 chemical formula play a crucial role in studying photostriction in inorganic materials. In this study, the photostrictive behavior of ilmenite-type ceramics ATiO 3 (where A = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, and Mn) was investigated under visible light irradiation. Among the ceramics investigated, CoTiO 3 showed the highest photostriction of approximately 0.1 % under 405, 520, and 650 nm light irradiation. The photostrictive response decreased successively in FeTiO 3 , MnTiO 3 , NiTiO 3 , and MgTiO 3 . Temperature and thermal expansion tests revealed that the deformation of the ceramics caused by the photothermal effect accounted for approximately half of their photostriction. Raman and charge transfer analyses indicated that the photostriction of the ceramics depended significantly on their crystal structure. Thus, the ceramics exhibited distinct photostrictive performances. This study highlights the connection between the crystal structure and photostrictive performance of ilmenite-type ceramics, providing valuable insights into the underlying mechanism of photostriction in inorganic materials.

The existing lithium extraction technologies from salt lakes are confronted with a number of challenges, including limited applicability to brines with elevated Mg/Li ratios and low overall lithium recovery rates. Therefore, it is crucial to develop direct lithium extraction technologies tailored to pristine brines. The core challenge in lithium extraction lies in the effective separation of magnesium and lithium. However, conventional methods struggle to efficiently separate Mg 2+ and Li + in a single-stage process. Lithium superionic conductors, such as Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP), are capable of exploiting their internal lithium ion vacancies to enhance the kinetic transport disparity between Mg 2+ and Li + , thus enabling efficient separation. By employing a high-temperature diffusion technique to introduce Ag + into the interstitial sites of the LATP lattice, the local positive charge density around Ag + is increased. This raises the migration barrier for Mg 2+ within the LATP, significantly improving the Li–Mg separation performance, with a notable long-term separation coefficient exceeding 25 000. Using 2% Ag-doped LATP, battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 with a purity of 99.7% can be produced directly from pristine salt lake brine with a Mg/Li ratio of 500 through a single-stage separation process.

Layered cathode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have garnered significant attention due to their high theoretical capacity and tunable crystal structure. However, they still confront severe structural attenuation at high voltages, especially those undergoing anionic redox reactions. To mitigate these limitations and elucidate the underlying mechanism, herein, a biphasic cathode material, Na 0.67 Fe 0.3 Mn 0.5 Li 0.1 Mg 0.1 O 2 , comprising 76.6% P2 and 23.4% O3 phases is proposed. The “Na─O─Mg” structure with robust Mg─O bonds enhances oxygen redox activity but also suppresses lattice oxygen evolution at elevated voltages, enabling a high initial discharge capacity of 187.8 mA h g⁻¹ at 0.1C. Moreover, the biphasic structure suppresses O/P structural rearrangement and mitigates harmful phase changes via forming OP2 phase at high-voltage, resulting in excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 96.6% after 100 cycles at 1C within an extended voltage window of 1.8–4.3 V. These findings deepen the understanding in the interlocking effect of biphasic materials and offer valuable insights for designing high-performance cathode materials.

The effects of extrusion temperatures on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion performance of biomedical Mg-1Zn-0.4Ca-1MgO composites were systematically investigated. The results indicated that lower extrusion temperatures notably refined the grain size and promoted the formation of numerous nano-scaled secondary phase particles. The grain sizes were 0.8 μm, 1.7 μm, and 3.4 μm for the materials extruded at 280 °C, 310 °C, and 330 °C, which were named ET280, ET310, and ET330. The finest grain size and abundant precipitates enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite with a microhardness of 86.9 HV, a yield strength of 305 MPa, and a fracture elongation of 15.2%. Moreover, the ET280 alloy with ultra-fine grains exhibited the optimal corrosion resistance among these three composites, and its annual corrosion after immersion in Hank’s solution for 14 days was only 0.17 mm/y. The excellent performance in vitro immersion was mainly attributed to the formation of the uniformly dense Ca-P layer on its surface and the contiguous compact Mg(OH)2layer, which could effectively weaken the contact between the corrosive solution and the Mg matrix.

Microarc oxidation (MAO) coatings incorporating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles were synthesized on Mg-Li alloys. The effects of h-BN nanoparticle concentration on the structure, phase composition, and tribological properties of the MAO coatings were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the addition of h-BN nanoparticles induces the formation of protrusions on the coating surface, varied in size and distribution with the concentration of h-BN particles. The protrusions are advantageous for enhancing the wear resistance of the coating, owing to the effective reduction of the contact area and the lubricating impact of the released h-BN particles during wear. The thickness and hardness of the coating contained h-BN particles are significantly elevated. At an optimal h-BN concentration of 7 g/L, the composite coating exhibits the lowest average coefficient of friction (COF = 0.59) and the minimum wear rate (W = 2.6 × 10 −6 mm 3 /N·m), thereby demonstrating superior tribological performance.

A major challenge for semiconductor ion fuel cells (SIFCs) is to design an electrolyte with proton transport properties so that it can maintain high ionic conductivity within relatively low temperatures. Herein, we develop a Sr and Mg codoped LaAlO3 electrolyte that facilitates efficient conduction of protons and oxygen ions by enriching oxygen vacancies and reducing the activation energy of ion conduction. The optimized electrolyte shows a low activation energy of 0.31 eV and demonstrates remarkably elevated ionic conductivity at low temperatures, e.g., 0.1994 S cm–1 at 550 °C. This is attributed to the significant increase in oxygen vacancies, which has been verified by XPS technology. Meanwhile, the Sr and Mg codoped LaAlO3 electrolyte exhibits remarkable proton transport properties, confirmed by proton filtration experiments, which provide further evidence for the improvement of the electrolyte ionic conductivity. As a result, the fuel cell with an optimized LaAlO3 electrolyte delivers an impressive peak power density of 977 mW·cm–2 with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.126 V at 550 °C. Particularly, compared with the fuel cell with a pure LaAlO3 electrolyte, the peak power density is increased by 38.4%. The dual-ion doping strategy provides crucial insight into the further development of high ionic conductivity electrolytes for SIFCs.

There is currently an urgent need to develop technologies for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal in wastewater owing to its widespread usage in human and animal populations and subsequent transmission into surface water. Aluminum (Al 2 O 3 ) is an excellent carrier, and polydopamine (PDA) is a surface modifier with a high nitrogen content and strong adhesion, and may represent a potential tool for CIP removal in wastewater. However, minimal research has been conducted on using PDA to improve the interactions between carrier and active components and thus improve the ozone utilization efficiency as well as catalytic activity and stability in CIP removal schemes. To address this research gap, study successfully prepared Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 composite materials for the catalytic ozone removal of CIP from water. The influencing factors and degradation mechanisms of the catalytic ozone treatment of ciprofloxacin wastewater and possible antibiotic degradation pathways were proposed. The removal of CIP was mainly carried out through indirect oxidation dominated by hydroxyl radicals (•OH), in addition to catalyst adsorption and direct ozone oxidation, and the oxidative degradation of CIP conformed to a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic model. Under ideal operating conditions, the CIP degradation efficiency of Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 /O 3 system reached 91.35% after 15 min. The mineralization efficiency of Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 /O 3 system was significantly higher than that of the single-ozone system. After four repeated uses of Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 , the CIP degradation efficiency remained stable, and the metal ion leaching concentration was within the limit, indicating that Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 demonstrated a high catalytic performance and stability.
