Metal nanoparticles (MNPs)/metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) composites have become a research hotspot because the cooperation between MNPs and MOF can effectively improve the catalytic performance. However, development of a simple method to disperse the tiny MNPs on MOF is still a great challenge. In this work, a AuPdPt/Cu-MOF composite was prepared successfully by a one-step reduction process. First, Cu-MOF with one-dimensional nanorod structure was prepared by using surfactant PVP to control morphological growth. Second, the AuPdPt/Cu-MOF composite was synthesized by reducing the metal precursor to AuPdPt nanoparticles (NPs) supported on the surface of Cu-MOF. Encouragingly, synergistic effect between Au, Pd, and Pt, along with high dispersion of AuPdPt NPs on Cu-MOF nanorods, leading to excellent catalytic activities toward the benzyl alcohol with a conversion rate of 66%. Thus, this simple strategy to design promising MNPs/MOF composite can provide various opportunities in the field of catalysis.

At present, functional materials such as metal sulfides, metal oxides and so on synthesized with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as the general templates or precursors in the field of gas sensing have been a new strategy to improve gas-sensing performance. In this work, a unique MOF-5-derived ZnO nanochains (NCs) sample is synthesized through a conventional solvothermal method with subsequent annealing process. The ZnO NCs-based sensor exhibits outstanding sensing performance such as fast response time (< 1 s) and high response value 34.7 toward 20 ppm triethylamine (TEA). The ZnO NCs sample was characterized by a series of methods (XRD, SEM, XPS and so on). The excellent TEA-sensing properties can be ascribed to the unique nanochain morphology and a plenty of oxygen vacancies of the ZnO crystal through the analysis of the morphology and composition of the sample. In addition, a possible growth mechanism comes up and the sensing mechanism is discussed. The superior TEA sensing performance makes the as-synthesized MOF-5 derived ZnO NCs sample a potential candidate for TEA fast detection.

Rational material design and controllable membrane preparation technology is essential to improve the separation performance and anti-fouling ability of a membrane. In this study, melamine is selected as the aqueous phase monomer of the interfacial polymerization and photocatalytic Zn-TCPP laminates are embedded into the membrane to develop a high performance self-cleaning loose TFN membrane. The melamine/TMC TFC membrane with a woven-like loose polyamide layer exhibits water permeance up to 30.1 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 and a good dye rejection (≥97%). With the addition of Zn-TCPP laminates, the membrane permeance is enhanced to 63.2 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 (TFN-2), which is twice than the TFC membrane. Furthermore, the dye rejection of TFN-2 remains high, and the rejection of salts (NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 ) is below 10%. Besides, the Zn-TCPP embedded TFN membrane can fully degrade the attached dye within 15 min under visible light, and the permeance of the treated membrane can be restored to its original state. The resultant Zn-TCPP/TFN loose nanofiltration membranes with excellent self-cleaning ability can not only provide a potential solution for the removal of organic pollutants, but also offer new inspiration for fabricating high performance self-cleaning loose nanofiltration membranes through a mature and facile interfacial polymerization method.

Co 3 O 4 -Ni-MOF composite was successfully prepared by solvent-thermal method and then was combined with acidified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs); the resulting Co 3 O 4 -Ni-MOF/MWCNTs hybrid was applied in supercapacitor and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrochemical tests including cyclic voltammetric (CV), galvanostatic charge and discharge (GCD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cycle life were also performed to investigate the supercapacitor properties of the as-prepared materials. The experimental results show that when the molar ratio of metal oxide material and Ni-MOF material is 1:1, Co 3 O 4 -Ni-MOF material displays better electrochemical performance. As the mass ratio of Co 3 O 4 -Ni-MOF and MWCNTs is 1:1, Co 3 O 4 -Ni-MOF/MWCNTs hybrid exhibits lower Rct value, higher cyclic capacitance stability, and better supercapacitor performance. Therefore, Co 3 O 4 -Ni-MOF/MWCNTs hybrid as an electrode material has a relatively ideal application prospect in terms of supercapacitor materials. Graphical abstract

The rational design and facile synthesis of transition metal-based catalysts supported by carbon nanomaterials with high activity, selectivity and stability remain a great challenge. Recently, the low-cost, stable and high-performance electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) derived from porous metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors have attracted numerous attention. Herein, a new type of CoMo carbide/nitride embedded in the flower-like carbon materials ( CoMo-MI-T , MI = 2-Methylimidazole, T = 400, 500, 600, 700 °C) has been synthesized by a simple pyrolysis , in which bimetallic CoMo-MI precursors can be conveniently converted from crystalline cobalt-based MOFs of Co-MI by solvothermal reaction. The pyrolyzed CoMo-MI-T series exhibits a hierarchically porous nanostructure, high Co 3 Mo 3 C/N content, suitable N-doping, graphitic carbon layers as well as well-preserved flower-shaped morphology, which shows an excellent OER performance. Among them, the most optimal CoMo-MI-600 owns the small overpotential of 316 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 89.9 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH solution. Meanwhile, the rotating ring-disk electrode technique is examined to verify near 4-electron transfer process for CoMo-MI-600 together with a high Faradaic efficiency of 98.7%. The well-performed CoMo-MI-600 electrocatalyst may be stemmed from the best balance of the synergistic effect of abundant multi-component, suitable electrical conductivity and large porosity. The current work will provide a new route to prepare MOF-derived bimetallic active sites in porous carbon nanomaterials with satisfactory activity and robust stability in the relevant energy applications .

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOF) have attracted great attention in the field of wastewater treatment. When MOF nanoparticles are used for adsorption applications, the nanoparticles normally have to be separated from the dispersed suspension by filtration or centrifugation for regeneration or recycling. In order to avoid this costly and time consuming process, MOF (NH 2 -MIL-125) nanofibrous hybrid membranes with photocatalytic properties were successfully fabricated in this study. The MOF membranes were characterized by using XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA, BET, and UV–Vis. The adsorption (including capacity, mechanism, dynamic, and isotherm) of dyes by the membranes is studied in great detail. The membranes exhibit great adsorption capacity to methylene blue and sodium fluorescein, and the adsorption is dominated by steric hindrance of dye molecule, not the π–π interactions and the zeta potential. Most importantly, the MOF membranes could be easily separated from the dyes solution and regenerated via a visible light catalytic degradation process for recycling, and the photocatalytic mechanism is discussed. We report an approach that polymerizable handle-modified nanosized metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as independent monomers to be covalently organized by crosslinking molecules (CLMs) into an orderly MOF-assembled hybrid monolithic stationary phase, overcoming the respective problems of previously reported MOF-mixed or embedded stationary phases so far. It has a hierarchical micro-, meso-, and macropore structure throughout the monolithic matrix that is donated from MOF themselves, formed via CLM crosslinking in-between MOFs and expended by porogenic solvents, and a tunable surface chemistry derived inherently from MOFs, regulated by CLMs and initiated by the mobile phases as well. Such a pore structure and surface chemistry display multiplex interactions of sieving and electrostatic repulsion in addition to the polarity-based interactions that synergistically govern the partitioning way and degree of target molecules between the stationary and mobile phases, thus offering the ability to simultaneously separate small and large molecules during one chromatographic run on a nano-flow capillary high-performance liquid chromatography platform. A baseline mutual separation with the HETP and Rs of, for example, 9.2 μm butylbenzene and 4.56 (butylbenzene and pentylbenzene), 7.9 μm (phenylalanine) and 3.50 (tryptophan and phenylalanine), and 7.0 μm (myoglobin) and 1.91 (bovine serum albumin and myoglobin) was achieved when UiO-66/NH-methacrylate was exemplified as a model of MOFs and 1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate and stearyl methacrylate together as CLMs. Not limited to the MOFs and CLMs demonstrated here, other available MOFs and CLMs or newly designed and synthesized ones are expected to be used for constructing one’s own desired monolithic stationary phases toward her/his particular purposes.

Synthesis of a continuous and intergrown metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane remains a challenging issue due to the grain boundary defects and intercrystalline cracks in MOF thin film . In this study, a ZIF-8 membrane was fabricated by using a plant polyphenol tannic acid (TA) layer as an intermediate layer to overcome this issue. Specifically, a TA layer was constructed on a polyethersulfone substrate via a facile and environmentally friendly aqueous coating process . Thereafter, the above modified membrane was immersed into a Zn(Ac)2 and Hmim mixture solution for in-situ growing a ZIF-8 thin film on membrane surface. It was found that the abundant pyrogallol groups in TA layer could coordinate with Zn 2+ ions, promote heterogeneous nucleation and contribute to a continuous and intergrown ZIF-8 thin film. The as-prepared ZIF-8 membrane showed a pure water permeance of 3.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 with NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 rejections of 64.7% and 92.2% respectively, overwhelming the controlled ZIF-8 membrane without TA as intermediate layer in both permeability and selectivity. This membrane is one of few MOF membranes that have a divalent salt rejection higher than 90%, demonstrating its great potential application in efficient desalination.

Recently, conductive metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) as the active material have provided broad prospects for electronic device application. The positioning technologies for MOFs enable the fabrication of novel microstructures, which can modulate the morphology of the material and tune the properties for the targeted application. Herein, a template-method is used to synthesize the hierarchical structure of MOF hybrid array (MHA) on copper mesh (MHA@Mesh) for flexible sensor. Finite element method (FEM) results indicate that the 3D hierarchical MHA@Mesh can mimic the micro/nanoscale structure of human skin, which enables an interlocking contact. MHA@Mesh-based flexible sensor presents rapid response rate (<1 ms) and high sensitivity (up to 307 kPa −1 ) which is 20 times higher than that of MHA@Foil-based sensor (15 kPa −1 ). The flexible pressure device could be applied to monitor the finger motion and human pulses. Moreover, the music recognition can be performed by integrating the MOFs hardware sensors with machine learning algorithms. Overall, this design concept of 3D hierarchical microarray structures demonstrates potential in the fields of wearable technologies and human–machine interfaces.

BiVO 4 , a promising visible-light responding photocatalyst, has aroused extensive research interest because of inexpensiveness and excellent chemical stability. However, its main drawback is the poor photoinduced charge-transfer dynamics. Building nanostructures is an effective way to tackle this problem. Herein, we put forward a new method to prepare nanostructured BiVO 4 from Bi-based metal-organic frameworks[Bi-MOF(CAU-17)] precursor. The as-prepared material has a rod-like morphology inherited from the Bi-MOF sacrificial template and consists of small nanoparticle as building blocks. Compared with its counterparts prepared by conventional methods, MOF-derived nanostructured BiVO 4 shows better light absorption ability, narrower bandgap, and improved electrical conductivity as well as reduced recombination. Consequently, BiVO 4 nanostructure demonstrates high photocatalytic activity under visible light towards the degradation of methylene blue. Methylene blue can be degraded up to 90% within 30 min with a reaction rate constant of 0.058 min −1 . Moreover, the cycling stability of the catalyst is excellent to withstand unchanged degradation efficiency for at least 5 cycles.

The development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as high-efficiency electrocatalysts for water splitting has attracted special attention due to their unique structural features including high porosity, large surface areas, high concentrations of active sites, uniform pore sizes and shapes, etc. Most of the related reports focus on the in situ generation of high-efficiency electrocatalysts by annealed MOFs. However, the pyrolysis process usually destroys the porous structure of MOFs and reduces the number of active sites due to the absence of organic ligands and agglomeration of metal centers. In this work, we prepared unique NiCo-MOF hollow nanospheres (NiCo-MOF HNSs) by a solvothermal method and further fabricated Fe-doped NiCo-MOF HNSs (Fe@NiCo-MOF HNSs) by a simple impregnation-drying method. Significant enhancement of electrocatalytic activity of Fe@NiCo-MOF HNSs was witnessed because of the doped Fe. Compared with the parent NiCo-MOF HNSs, the optimized Fe@NiCo-MOF HNSs exhibited a lower overpotential of 244 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 with a smaller Tafel slope of 48.61 mV·dec−1, which was lowered by ca. 90 mV due to the influence of Fe doping on the electronic structure of the active centers of Ni and Co. The above materials also displayed excellent stability without obvious activity decay for at least 16 hours. These findings present a new entry in the design and fabrication of high-efficiency MOF-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based drug delivery systems have demonstrated values in oncotherapy. Current research endeavors are centralized on the functionality enrichment of featured MOF materials with designed versatility for synergistic multimodal treatments. Here, inspired by the multifarious biological functions including ferroptosis pattern, porphyrins, and cancer cell membrane (CCM) camouflage technique, novel multi-biomimetic MOF nanocarriers from microfluidics are prepared. The Fe 3+ , meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine and oxaliplatin prodrug are incorporated into one MOF nano-system (named FeTPt), which is further cloaked by CCM to obtain a “Trojan Horse”-like vehicle (FeTPt@CCM). Owing to the functionalization with CCM, FeTPt@CCM can target and accumulate at the tumor site via homologous binding. After being internalized by cancer cells, FeTPt@CCM can be activated by a Fenton-like reaction as well as a redox reaction between Fe 3+ and glutathione and hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radical and oxygen. Thus, the nano-platform effectively initiates ferroptosis and improves photodynamic therapy performance. Along with the Pt-drug chemotherapy, the nano-platform exhibits synergistic multimodal actions for inhibiting cancer cell proliferation in vitro and suppressing tumor growth in vivo. These features indicate that such a versatile biomimetic MOF delivery system from microfluidics has great potential for synergistic cancer treatment.
