Layered cathode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have garnered significant attention due to their high theoretical capacity and tunable crystal structure. However, they still confront severe structural attenuation at high voltages, especially those undergoing anionic redox reactions. To mitigate these limitations and elucidate the underlying mechanism, herein, a biphasic cathode material, Na 0.67 Fe 0.3 Mn 0.5 Li 0.1 Mg 0.1 O 2 , comprising 76.6% P2 and 23.4% O3 phases is proposed. The “Na─O─Mg” structure with robust Mg─O bonds enhances oxygen redox activity but also suppresses lattice oxygen evolution at elevated voltages, enabling a high initial discharge capacity of 187.8 mA h g⁻¹ at 0.1C. Moreover, the biphasic structure suppresses O/P structural rearrangement and mitigates harmful phase changes via forming OP2 phase at high-voltage, resulting in excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 96.6% after 100 cycles at 1C within an extended voltage window of 1.8–4.3 V. These findings deepen the understanding in the interlocking effect of biphasic materials and offer valuable insights for designing high-performance cathode materials.

There is currently an urgent need to develop technologies for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal in wastewater owing to its widespread usage in human and animal populations and subsequent transmission into surface water. Aluminum (Al 2 O 3 ) is an excellent carrier, and polydopamine (PDA) is a surface modifier with a high nitrogen content and strong adhesion, and may represent a potential tool for CIP removal in wastewater. However, minimal research has been conducted on using PDA to improve the interactions between carrier and active components and thus improve the ozone utilization efficiency as well as catalytic activity and stability in CIP removal schemes. To address this research gap, study successfully prepared Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 composite materials for the catalytic ozone removal of CIP from water. The influencing factors and degradation mechanisms of the catalytic ozone treatment of ciprofloxacin wastewater and possible antibiotic degradation pathways were proposed. The removal of CIP was mainly carried out through indirect oxidation dominated by hydroxyl radicals (•OH), in addition to catalyst adsorption and direct ozone oxidation, and the oxidative degradation of CIP conformed to a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetic model. Under ideal operating conditions, the CIP degradation efficiency of Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 /O 3 system reached 91.35% after 15 min. The mineralization efficiency of Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 /O 3 system was significantly higher than that of the single-ozone system. After four repeated uses of Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 , the CIP degradation efficiency remained stable, and the metal ion leaching concentration was within the limit, indicating that Fe-Mg/PDA@Al 2 O 3 demonstrated a high catalytic performance and stability.

Microarc oxidation (MAO) coatings incorporating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles were synthesized on Mg-Li alloys. The effects of h-BN nanoparticle concentration on the structure, phase composition, and tribological properties of the MAO coatings were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the addition of h-BN nanoparticles induces the formation of protrusions on the coating surface, varied in size and distribution with the concentration of h-BN particles. The protrusions are advantageous for enhancing the wear resistance of the coating, owing to the effective reduction of the contact area and the lubricating impact of the released h-BN particles during wear. The thickness and hardness of the coating contained h-BN particles are significantly elevated. At an optimal h-BN concentration of 7 g/L, the composite coating exhibits the lowest average coefficient of friction (COF = 0.59) and the minimum wear rate (W = 2.6 × 10 −6 mm 3 /N·m), thereby demonstrating superior tribological performance.

A major challenge for semiconductor ion fuel cells (SIFCs) is to design an electrolyte with proton transport properties so that it can maintain high ionic conductivity within relatively low temperatures. Herein, we develop a Sr and Mg codoped LaAlO3 electrolyte that facilitates efficient conduction of protons and oxygen ions by enriching oxygen vacancies and reducing the activation energy of ion conduction. The optimized electrolyte shows a low activation energy of 0.31 eV and demonstrates remarkably elevated ionic conductivity at low temperatures, e.g., 0.1994 S cm–1 at 550 °C. This is attributed to the significant increase in oxygen vacancies, which has been verified by XPS technology. Meanwhile, the Sr and Mg codoped LaAlO3 electrolyte exhibits remarkable proton transport properties, confirmed by proton filtration experiments, which provide further evidence for the improvement of the electrolyte ionic conductivity. As a result, the fuel cell with an optimized LaAlO3 electrolyte delivers an impressive peak power density of 977 mW·cm–2 with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.126 V at 550 °C. Particularly, compared with the fuel cell with a pure LaAlO3 electrolyte, the peak power density is increased by 38.4%. The dual-ion doping strategy provides crucial insight into the further development of high ionic conductivity electrolytes for SIFCs.

The effects of extrusion temperatures on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion performance of biomedical Mg-1Zn-0.4Ca-1MgO composites were systematically investigated. The results indicated that lower extrusion temperatures notably refined the grain size and promoted the formation of numerous nano-scaled secondary phase particles. The grain sizes were 0.8 μm, 1.7 μm, and 3.4 μm for the materials extruded at 280 °C, 310 °C, and 330 °C, which were named ET280, ET310, and ET330. The finest grain size and abundant precipitates enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite with a microhardness of 86.9 HV, a yield strength of 305 MPa, and a fracture elongation of 15.2%. Moreover, the ET280 alloy with ultra-fine grains exhibited the optimal corrosion resistance among these three composites, and its annual corrosion after immersion in Hank’s solution for 14 days was only 0.17 mm/y. The excellent performance in vitro immersion was mainly attributed to the formation of the uniformly dense Ca-P layer on its surface and the contiguous compact Mg(OH)2layer, which could effectively weaken the contact between the corrosive solution and the Mg matrix.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is regarded as one of the most promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials. However, its practical application remains limited by thermodynamic stability, slow kinetics, and the gradual coarsening of particles during cycling. To address these limitations, we synthesized a stoichiometrically adjustable Mg-Nb nanocomposite using a liquid-phase in-situ growth strategy. Optimization revealed that the Mg-Nb (10:1) composite exhibits excellent hydrogen storage performance, releasing hydrogen at 239.5 °C with a capacity of 6.17 wt%. At 300°C, the composite released 5.72 wt% H₂ within 15 min, while hydrogen absorption commences at room temperature. Notably, after 100 cycles of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation, the capacity retention was maintained at 99.98 %, underscoring its exceptional cycling stability. The measured dehydrogenation activation energy was reduced to 85.38 kJ/mol, approximately 47.5 % lower than that of pure MgH 2 (162.54 kJ/mol). Mechanistic studies reveal that Nb 5 + is preferentially reduced and acts as a nucleation as well as growth site for Mg, allowing Mg to interact and distribute evenly with Nb. This structure not only provides abundant active sites and hydrogen diffusion pathways but also effectively suppresses the agglomeration and growth of Mg/MgH 2 matrix during hydrogenation/dehydrogenation. Furthermore, NbH 2 phases are formed during the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation process, significantly promoting the adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen atoms, thereby optimizing the hydrogen storage performance of the material.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have attracted extensive attention due to the high volumetric capacity and natural abundance of magnesium (Mg) metal anode. However, the Mg metal anode in ether-based electrolyte systems often suffers from surface passivation, leading to the irreversible plating/stripping behavior of Mg. In this work, for the first time, an effective strategy is proposed to modify the Mg metal anode by in situ alloy formation using a chlorine-free organic metal compound, triphenyl bismuth (TPB). Through electrochemical reduction, an Mg-Bi alloy forms uniformly on the Mg metal anode surface, providing abundant nucleation sites for Mg, allowing for smooth and stable Mg deposition and suppressing the occurrence of short circuits. In a 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME)-based electrolyte system, the addition of TPB significantly improves the electrochemical performance of Mg anode, enabling stable cycling for up to 170 h at a low overpotential. Similarly, in the tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (G4) electrolyte system, excellent performance is observed, achieving stable cycling of 240 h. This work confirms the feasibility of using chlorine-free organic metal additives to improve the Mg anode interface and provides new possibilities for enhancing the practical applications of RMBs.

The rational design of efficient thermal-photo CO 2 reduction catalysts necessitates synergistic integration of structural modulation and reactant activation strategies. Herein, a Mg-doped Bi nanosphere catalyst is reported, engineered for efficient CO 2 reduction under H 2 O-H 2 co-feeding conditions. Mg doping not only optimizes the nanostructure by reducing the particle size but also modifies the surface charge distribution and enhances water adsorption, thereby promoting CO 2 activation and catalytic performance. Crucially, under H 2 O H 2 co-feeding, H 2 O interacts with Bi to generate hydroxylated Bi OH sites that promote CO 2 chemisorption, while H 2 supplies hydrogen species (*H) for CO 2 reduction. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy reveals a cooperative mechanism: CO 2 adsorbs on Bi OH to form *CO 3 2− intermediates, which undergo sequential reduction facilitated by H 2 activation. This synergy achieves a CO production rate of 55.32 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 under 420 nm illumination with 100% selectivity, which is 2.4 times higher than that under a pure H 2 atmosphere. The work highlights the critical role of dopant-driven active site engineering and reactant synergies (H 2 O H 2 ) in CO 2 valorization, providing a scalable strategy for catalytic performance enhancement.

To address the third-phase formation and high-acidity stripping corrosion of the traditional TBP-FeCl₃ system for Li extraction from high Mg/Li ratio salt-lake brines, this study developed a TBP-MNPK-kerosene-FeCl₃ system using 2-heptanone (MNPK) as a modifier. MNPK eliminated third-phase formation and enabled complete phase separation within 50s. Under optimal conditions (20 vol % kerosene, 40 vol % TBP), Li extraction efficiency reached 85.4 % with a Li/Mg separation factor of 315. After water scrubbing and 3 mol/L HCl stripping, the stripping solution had 5.46 g/L Li (3.12-fold enrichment) and Li/Mg ratio of 11.38. This system provides an efficient, industrial-feasible Li extraction solution.

Osteogenic and antibacterial abilities are the permanent pursuit of titanium (Ti)-based orthopedic implants. However, it is difficult to strike the right balance between these two properties. It has been proved that an appropriate alkaline microenvironment formed by Ti modified by magnesium–aluminum layered double hydroxides (Mg–Al LDHs) could achieve the selective killing of bacteria and promote osteogenesis. However, the existence of Al induces biosafety concerns. In this study, iron (Fe), an essential trace element in the human body, was used to substitute Al, and a calcinated Mg–Fe LDH film was constructed on Ti. The results showed that a proper local alkaline environment created by the constructed film could enhance the antibacterial and osteogenic properties of the material. In addition, the introduction of Fe promoted the Fenton reaction and could produce reactive oxygen species in the infection environment, which might further strengthen the in vivo bactericidal effect. Keywords:antibacterial;osteogenic;Mg–Fe layered double hydroxides;alkaline microenvironment;Fenton reaction

Infection and insufficient osteointegration are the main causes of orthopedic implant failure. Furthermore, activating favorable inflammation response is vital to the fast osteointegration of implants. Therefore, endowing the implants with multifunctions (antibacterial, anti-inflammation, and pro-osteointegration) is a promising strategy to improve the performance of orthopedic implants. In this study, a Zn-contained polydopamine (PDA) film was fabricated on AZ31 alloy. The film possessed a stable Zn ion release in 14 days. The results of electrochemical analysis implied the favorable corrosion protection of the film, and thus, leading to a suitable hemolysis ratio (below 1%). The in vitro antibacterial assessment revealed that the film exhibited excellent resistance against Staphylococcus aureus (nearly 100%), which can be ascribed to the release of Zn ions. The cell-culture evaluation revealed that the extract of Zn-contained PDA-coated sample can activate RAW264.7 polarization to an anti-inflammatory phenotype, as well as enhance the osteogenic differentiation ability of MC3T3-E1. Additionally, the femoral osteomyelitis model indicated that the as-prepared film had a high antibacterial capability at early stage of the implantation, and showed better osteogenesis and osteointegration after 8 weeks of implantation. With favorable antibacterial, anti-inflammation, and pro-osteogenesis abilities, the novel designed Zn-contained PDA film is promising to be used in Mg-based orthopedic implants.

Conventional self-healing anti-corrosion coatings face limitations in corrosion inhibitor release kinetics, triggering conditions, and inhibition efficiency, which compromise their protective effectiveness for magnesium alloys. In this study, we developed a novel dual-functional PEO/EP@PIN composite coating with salt-responsive self-healing properties. The coating system innovatively combines a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) interlayer with an epoxy (EP) topcoat embedded with polyaniline (PANI) microcapsules containing 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (IN) ionic liquid corrosion inhibitor. The PANI microcapsules enable rapid Na + -triggered inhibitor release in high-salinity environments, while the PEO layer ensures robust interfacial adhesion to the Mg substrate. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the coating achieves an ultralow corrosion current density of 6.26 × 10 −11 A·cm −2 , representing a 7-order-of-magnitude reduction compared to bare Mg alloy, while maintaining a high impedance modulus of 8.97 Ω·cm 2 after 30 days of immersion in 5.0 wt% NaCl solution. Scratch-healing experiments and XPS analysis revealed that the released IN inhibitor forms Mg-N/S chemical bonds with the substrate and generates hydrolyzed Mg(OH)₂ barrier phases, effectively blocking corrosive media penetration. This work elucidates the salt-responsive and self-healing mechanisms of the coating, providing new insights for developing smart anti-corrosion coatings for magnesium alloys.
