The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the amorphous carbon/MgO nanofibers: Insight into the role of the oxygen vacancies and 1D morphology

Xiaojiang Su,Naiwen Cao,Jing Feng,Weixia Li,Xuejiao Ding,Zhiyong Li,Mingming Gao,Liangqing Hu,Hexin Zhang,Yueming Ren,Tong Wei

High performance, recycling easily, green, and cheap are necessary for the practical application of photocatalysts. Here, a novel composite of amorphous carbon and magnesium oxide nanofibers (C/MgO-F-600) is fabricated by an electrospinning method. Instead of organic solvents, H 2 O is employed as the electrospinning solvent, which is environmentally friendly. The degradation efficiency of C/MgO-F-600 to methylene blue (MB) is 91.51%, which is about 1.9 times higher than that of MgO-600 nanosheets. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the C/MgO-F-600 is mainly ascribed to the moderate content of oxygen vacancies and 1D nanofiber structure, resulting in the higher photocurrent density, photocatalytic activity and the lowest bandgap and impedance. This work provides the feasibility for the improvement of wide bandgap photocatalysts (MgO) in practical applications.

Effect of Li2CO3–Bi2O3 doping on the low-temperature sintering, structure, and dielectric and mechanical properties of MgO–TiO2(w) ceramics

Qi Yuan,Sen Wang,Gaobin Liu,Kuoming Song,He Zhao,Shuai Yan,Xin Li

Dense MgO–12% TiO 2 (w) ceramics containing 12 wt% TiO 2 , which were doped with Li 2 CO 3 –Bi 2 O 3 composite sintering aids, were prepared at a low sintering temperature of 950 °C in this study. The effects of sintering additives on the sintering characteristics, phase composition, microstructure, and dielectric and mechanical properties of the ceramic samples were systematically investigated, and the influences of their phase composition and microstructure on the dielectric and mechanical properties were examined. The introduction of sintering aids produced a new Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 phase in the sample structure, while the residual Bi 2 O 3 mixed with the newly formed Mg 2 TiO 4 and Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 phases distributed at MgO grain boundaries formed a structure surrounding MgO grains. This structure filled the pores in the ceramic sample, which increased its density and enhanced the mechanical properties. At a Li 2 CO 3 –Bi 2 O 3 content of 15 wt%, the density, flexural strength , and Vickers hardness of the ceramic samples reached their maximum values of 3.4 g/cm 3 , 218.9 MPa, and 778.7 HV, respectively. However, the further increase in the Li 2 CO 3 –Bi 2 O 3 content deteriorated their dielectric properties although the dielectric constant and dielectric loss remained below 13.4 and 2.1 × 10 −3 , respectively. The findings of this work indicate that Li 2 CO 3 –Bi 2 O 3 sintering aids can significantly lower the sintering temperature of MgO–12% TiO 2 (w) ceramics and control their dielectric and mechanical properties through microstructural changes.

Bi-functional biochar-g-C3N4-MgO composites for simultaneously minimizing pollution:Photocatalytic degradation of pesticide and phosphorus recovery as slow-release fertilizer

Xiongfang An,Xiaolin Xu,Weijie Guo,Zepu Chen,Zhiyin Miao,Jiayi Yuan,Zhansheng Wu

Significant progress has been made in the development of phosphorus recovery adsorbents and photocatalysts for degradation of pesticides. However, the bifunctional materials for phosphorus recovery and photocatalytic degradation of pesticides have not been designed, and the mechanism of the interaction between photocatalysis and P adsorption remains unexplored. Herein, we develop biochar-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO composites (BC-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO) with bi-function application to minimize water toxicity and eutrophication. The results show phosphorus adsorption capacity of the BC-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO composite reaches 111.0 mg·g-1, and its degradation ratio of dinotefuran reaches 80.1% within 260 min. The mechanism studies show that MgO can play variety roles in BC-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO composite, in which can improve the adsorption capacity of phosphorus, enhance the utilization efficiency of visible light and the separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. The biochar existed in BC-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO serves as charge transporter with a good conductivity, which promotes the fluent transfer of photo-generated charge carriers. The ESR indicates that both • O 2 − and •OH generated from BC-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO are responsible for dinotefuran degradation. Finally, pot experiments reveal that P laden BC-g-C 3 N 4 -MgO promotes the growth of pepper seedlings with high P utilization efficiency of 49.27%.

Preparation and performance improvement of chlorides/MgO ceramics shape-stabilized phase change materials with expanded graphite for thermal energy storage system

Yicheng Hou,Jun Qiu,Wei Wang,Xibo He,Mubashar Ayyub,Yong Shuai

Cold compression and mixed sintering methods have attracted attention for their applicability to industrial mass production. Due to the wettability of expanded graphite (EG) and salt chlorides, the decoupling of the encapsulation effect of EG and ceramics should be considered in the form-stable composite materials ratio of ternary chlorides (TC)/MgO ceramics/EG. In this study, 40 wt%-55 wt% MgO and 5 wt%-20 wt% EG are added to the composites, respectively. It is found that the composite system can be loaded with nearly 45 wt% molten salts. The 45 wt% TC-15 wt% EG-40 wt% MgO sample named 15EG-40MgO is considered a close to optimal formulation in terms of thermal conductivity enhancement and energy density reduction. This proportional composite has a thermal conductivity of 8.86 W∙m −1 ∙K −1 , and in the temperature range of 300–600 °C, the thermal storage density reaches 439.53 J·g −1 . With the increase of TC content, the density of the composites shows a decreasing trend. However, all samples have excellent mechanical strength due to the MgO ceramics as the supporting material. Moreover, these composites can be easily integrated into a solar thermal storage system, which proposes a new strategy for applying a high-temperature packed-bed containing salt-based composite phase change materials.

2D thin sheets composed of Co5.47N–MgO embedded in carbon as a durable catalyst for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds

Chengxu Jin,Ying Gu,Zhihui Li,Siyu Wang,Nan Wang,Yanqing Jiao,Bateer Buhe,Chungui Tian

Convenient high-yield synthesis of metal nitride-based materials with good stability is pursued constantly. Especially considering the advantages of 2D materials, the combination of cobalt nitride with 2D nanosheets is hoped to promote its catalytic ability, but the synthesis remains a challenge. Herein, we showed the feasible synthesis of 2D thin sheets composed of Co5.47N–MgO embedded in carbon (2D Co5.47N–MgO@C sheets) in high yield, which is based on a grinding treatment of Co salt and 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) in MgCl2/NaCl/KCl salts followed by two-step calcination. During the first nitridation step, 2-MIM, which had already been coordinated with Co and Mg, can convert into an amorphous carbon layer with the embedded Co species, along with the formation of MgO. During the next step, Co5.47N can be generated in tight connection with the amorphous carbon layer and MgO. The molten salt medium can induce the orientated growth of the material and prevent it from agglomeration, even in the case of a high Co concentration, thus realizing the high-yield synthesis and dispersion of the 2D sheets. Remarkably, the present synthetic strategy exhibits high conversion (almost 100%) of the added Co source into cobalt nitride. The reduction of an aromatic nitro compound (4-nitrophenol, 4-NP) into an amine compound (4-aminophenol, 4-AP) was used to evaluate the catalytic performance. 4-NP was effectively converted. The alkalinity of MgO is favourable for the deprotonation of 4-NP, which enhances the activity. Notably, there was no obvious change in performance after recycled use up to 10 times owing to the protection of carbon. Furthermore, tests confirmed that the 2D Co5.47N–MgO@C sheets exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the reduction of a series of nitro compounds. The present method provides a promising route for the convenient synthesis of 2D nanosheet-based catalysts.

Synchronous Growth of Porous MgO and Half-Embedded Nano-Ru on a Mg Plate: A Monolithic Catalyst for Fast Hydrogen Production

Xiaoqing Cao,Jun Zhou,Zhipeng Zhai,Song Li,Guo Yuan,Gaowu Qin

Development of efficient and sustainable monolithic catalysts for NaBH4 hydrolysis remains an important goal for hydrogen cycling. In this work, the structured catalyst Ru/MgO with an on–off feature has been prepared by directly growing a nano-Ru-embedded MgO coating layer on a Mg substrate via an instant high-temperature plasma oxidation process. The porous MgO framework provides an ideal space for the access of reactants and diffusion of mass transport, which facilitates reaction triggering and the expulsion of byproducts to avoid poisoning the catalyst. Importantly, Ru nanoparticles (NPs) are monodisperse with ultrasmall particle size deriving from a concurrent rapid arcing and fast quenching. The hierarchical structured Ru NP catalysts are highly active for hydrolysis of sodium borohydride by achieving a high hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of 101,189 mL min–1 g–1 and exhibit attractive stability. In addition, it is facile to realize the “on–off” functionality based on simple separation that could accurately control the hydrogen generation, suggesting the structured catalyst to be of great potential for practical applications. This simple method opens valuable opportunities for fast synthesis of the high-quality structured catalyst and could be extended to various noble metals on oxides of valve metals with high catalytic performance.

Nitrogen-doped flower-like porous carbon materials directed by in situ hydrolysed MgO: Promising support for Ru nanoparticles in catalytic hydrogenations

Li Mingming,Tang Minghui,Deng Jiang,Wang Yong

The development of novel, simple, and convenient techniques for the fabrication of porous carbon materials with desirable properties, such as tunable pore structures and the presence of nitrogen functionalities, from renewable and abundant biomasses is required. We herein describe an in situ directing method for the preparation of a nitrogen-doped flower-like porous carbon (NFPC) employing arbitrarily shaped MgO from bio-derived glucosamine chloride (GAH). Experimental evidence demonstrated that the structure directing effect of the Mg(OH) 2 nanosheets formed in situ from MgO hydrolysis was key to this process, with the original MgO morphology being irrelevant. Furthermore, this method was applicable for a wide variety of biomass-derived carbon precursors. The resulting NFPC exhibited a high nitrogen content of ≤9 wt.%, and was employed as a support to anchor small Ru nanoparticles (average size = 2.7 nm). The resulting Ru/NFPC was highly active in heterogeneous hydrogenations of toluene and benzoic acid, which demonstrated the advantages of nitrogen doping in terms of boosting catalytic performance.

Enhanced the dehydrocyclization of 1,4-butanediol to γ-butyrolactone via the regulation of interface oxygen vacancies in Cu/MgO-CeO2 catalyst

Siying Chong,Shuang Zhao,Jiaoyan Li,Gangwei Huang,Yajing Zhang,Ruirui Liu,Kangjun Wang

Gas-phase dehydrocyclization of biomass-derived 1,4-butanediol (BDO) to γ-butyrolactone (GBL) is a sustainable and environmentally friendly process conducted at atmospheric pressure. In the present work, a series of 15Cu/xMgO-yCeO 2 catalysts with different MgO: CeO 2 ratios were prepared by the ammonia vaporization method. The gas-phase dehydrocyclization of BDO to GBL was carried out over these Cu-based catalysts synthesized in a fixed-bed reactor. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, N 2 isothermal adsorption–desorption, H 2 -TPR, CO 2 -TPD, Raman, XPS, and EPR. The results indicated that the 15Cu/10MgO-90CeO 2 catalyst exhibited a smaller particle size, higher specific surface area, and increased oxygen vacancies than the 15Cu/CeO 2 catalyst. Operating conditions of 240 °C reaction temperature, 2.4 mL/h space velocity, and 98.92 % GBL yield from BDO dehydrogenation were achieved under 40 mL/min N 2 flow for 4 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the 15Cu/10MgO-90CeO 2 catalyst with more oxygen vacancies was more favorable for the adsorption and activation of BDO on the catalyst surface than 15Cu/CeO 2 , and its higher catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic interaction between Cu + and oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface.

Enhancing catalytic CO2 reduction to carbon performance of nano-MnFe2O4 prepared from high-silica manganese ores via MgO phase reconstruction strategy

Jia Wang,Yuanbo Zhang,Zijian Su,Tao Jiang

Silicon (Si) has been proven to significantly enhance CO 2 reduction efficiency of numerous catalysts. However, the lack of research on Si's effect on manganese ferrite catalytic performance presents a challenge in using high-silica manganese ore to prepare cost-effective, efficient manganese-based ferrite decarbonization catalysts. This work prepared Nano-MnFe 2 O 4 materials containing 0.0%–9.3%Si (2.3% increments, in mass fraction) by solid-phase synthesis (1300 °C, air) and nano-grinding. The effect, mechanism, and enhancement strategy of Si on the low-temperature catalytic reduction of CO 2 to carbon (C) performance of Nano-MnFe 2 O 4 were systematically investigated. Results showed that introducing Si transformed Nano-MnFe 2 O 4 into Nano-Mn X Fe 3– X O 4 (0.75 < X < 1.00) with degraded catalysis and Nano-Fe Y Mn Z SiO 4 with almost no activity, lowering CO 2 reduction to C from 5.55 mmol/g to 2.81 mmol/g. Increasing Si concentration simultaneously decreased the content and X -value of Nano-Mn X Fe 3- X O 4 , causing fewer oxygen vacancies and declined CO 2 reduction. A phase reconstruction strategy to eliminate Si impact and enhance catalysis was proposed, i.e. , adding MgO, increasing Mn/Fe ratio, and nano-grinding followed by magnetic separation. Nano-Mg 0.19 Mn 1.70 Fe 1.11 O 4 reconstructed from Nano-MnFe 2 O 4 with 2.3% Si exhibited 8.82 mmol/g CO 2 reduction and 100% carbon conversion at 350 °C. Mg 2+ doping strengthened the conversion of Mn 2+ to highly catalytically active Mn 3+ and Mn 4+ ions, increasing oxygen vacancies and electron transport for C=O rupture.

Insights into the roles of the MgO additive in crystal structures, sintering behaviors, and optical properties of transparent In2O3 semiconductor ceramics

Bo You,Bin Lu,Dazhen Wu,Ruijie Pei

MgO was found to be a good sintering aid for densification of several types of ceramics; however, the previous reports seldom provided persuasive evidence to support their proposed functional mechanism. In the present work, we successfully fabricated polycrystalline transparent In2O3 semiconductor ceramics using MgO as an additive and offered vital insight into the additive roles in sintering behavior and optical properties, which are conducive to mastering the microstructure evolution principle and interaction function mechanism. The oxygen defect and solute drag mechanisms have combined effects on the sintering of MgO-doped In2O3 ceramics. Additionally, MgO also helps to improve the thermal stability. At the optimized MgO content of 0.5 at%, the In2O3 ceramic sintered at 1600 °C under an oxygen atmosphere achieves an in-line transmittance of 63.0% at 633 nm (∼83% of the theoretical transmittance of a perfect In2O3 single crystal) with a fine average grain size of ∼9.7 μm. Upon deep UV excitation, the transparent In2O3 semiconductors exhibit broad spectral bands covering from the near-UV to the entire visible region, where the dominant ∼493 nm cyan light derives from the deep-level defect emission. The MgO dopants enhance the photoluminescence intensity and prolong the deep-level fluorescence lifetime. The cathodoluminescence spectra show broad orange emission, with the emission centers located at 626 and 613 nm for the intra-grain and grain-boundary regions, respectively. The integral intensity of cathodoluminescence increases as the acceleration voltage increases, while the intensity in the grain interior is much higher than that on the grain boundary at each voltage.

MgO anchored N-doping biochar enhances the bensulfuron-methyl biodegradation by Acinetobacter YH0317: Higher reactive oxygen species level and bacterial viability

Yang Yang,Zhichao Kang,Guanghui Xu,Jian Wang,Yong Yu

Bensulfuron-methyl (BSM) is a typical broad-spectrum sulfonylurea herbicide and the runoff of BSM residues from agricultural regions poses a significant threat to the ecosystem. Here we develop a bacteria-material hybrid system constructed by Acinetobacter YH0317 and Mg(NO 3 ) 2 modified biochar (MBC) for efficiently degrading BSM under various conditions including pH and temperature. Results showed that BSM biodegradation efficiency by YH0317&MBC (96.7 %) was significantly higher than YH0317&BC (79.5 %) and YH0317 (43.9 %) at 15 °C after 7 d of incubation. The addition of MBC significantly increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, which was significantly higher than group YH0317. Moreover, the bacterial viability, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production, and membrane permeability of YH0317 were also enhanced with the addition of MBC. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments revealed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominant active substance produced by MBC. The YH0317&MBC could effectively remove the BSM, and reduce the oxidative stress to soybean, which was beneficial to the growth of soybean through hydroponic experiment. This study establishes a microorganism-material system that efficiently removes BSM in aquatic environments and emphasizes the importance of ROS in pollution removal by the hybrid system.

Organic–Inorganic Modification of PVDF Membranes by PDA@ZnO and PDA@MgO Nanoparticles for Enhanced Performance of Organic Dye Wastewater Treatment

Yiming Wu,Jing Yang,Ruifeng Zhang,Hongji Li,Ruihua Mu,Yamei Zhao

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes represent a potential technology for the in-depth treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater. Nevertheless, the intractable membrane fouling and the limited versatility have significantly constrained its applications. Herein, through the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion method, we have successfully fabricated the PDA@MgO/PVDF and PDA@ZnO/PVDF membranes, which are modified by the synergistic action of MgO or ZnO nanoparticles with polydopamine (PDA), respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as the analyses of pore structure, contact angle, and surface free energy, were utilized to characterize the hybrid membranes. The results demonstrate that the modification of PDA@MgO and PDA@ZnO can enhance the hydrophilicity, pure flux, dye rejection, and pollution resistance of PVDF membranes. The enhanced hydrophilicity of the modified membranes results from the increase in surface free energy and its polar component term. Comparatively, the PDA@ZnO/PVDF membrane exhibits a smaller contact angle (69°) and a higher pure water flux (378.63 L/m2·h·bar), whereas the PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane possesses greater mechanical strength and better antifouling performance. The PDA@MgO/PVDF membrane can achieve a rejection rate of 94.6% for disperse deep blue 79, and the flux recovery rate can reach approximately 82%. This research offers novel insights into the application of PVDF membranes for the treatment of organic dye-containing wastewater.
