High-performance cyanate ester (CE) resins with excellent dielectric properties are highly desired in the fields of information and communication technology . Herein, we present an efficient strategy for the preparation of low- k and wave-transparent CE resins modified with a novel kind of bismaleimide (BMI) hollow polymer microspheres (BMI-HPPs). Benefiting from both the superior properties of BMI and the unique hollow structure, BMI-HPPs can serve as an effective modifier to reduce dielectric constant (ε) of the CE resins and simultaneously improve their toughness. There are plenty of pendant vinyl groups and unreacted maleimide groups on the surface of BMI-HPPs, which could effectively copolymerize with CE monomer , leading to a lower curing temperature and better interfacial compatibility. The BMI-HPPs/CE resin with 7.5 wt% BMI-HPPs exhibited minimum values of ε and dielectric loss (tanδ) (2.46, 0.006) at 16 GHz, much lower than those of the pristine CE resin (2.92, 0.018), and the corresponding wave transmission was 93.8%–97.1% in the frequency range of 15–18 GHz. Moreover, the modified CE resin showed a maximum impact strength of 18.8 kJ/m 2 at 5 wt% loading of BMI-HPPs, which is 64% higher than that of the pristine CE resin. Because of low- k dielectric properties, superior wave-transparent performance and highly enhanced toughness , the BMI-HPPs/CE resins have great potential in the fields of microelectronics and aerospace.

A unique zeolite catalyst, Fe doped ZSM-5 microsphere assembled by uniform nanorod-like crystals with hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized and applied for the adsorption and degradation of trace chlorobenzene (CB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The organic ferric salts as the precursors, ethylene glycol as a chelating/reducing agent and the dynamic two-stage temperature-varied hydrothermal technique, together made the synthesized hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 nanorods assembled microspheres (FZ-CA-5EG) to be characterized by abundant highly dispersed and valency-controlled framework Fe 3+/2+ species. As a result of these features, the FZ-CA-5EG showed excellent ability of adsorption and degradation efficiency of CB, and enhanced durability due to negligible leaching of framework Fe species. Moreover, the hydroxyl radicals were determined as the main the reactive oxygen species of CB oxidation degradation, and a possible adsorption-oxidation degradation pathway was proposed.

Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous microspheres (3DOMMs) with copolymer skeletons have been successfully fabricated using a colloidal crystal templating method. The spherical SiO 2 colloidal crystal was firstly self-assembled as template via the evaporation-induced self-assembly process in a water/oil suspension system. The 3DOMMs were obtained by sealing the silica colloidal crystal template with polyethylene glycol 1500 (PEG 1500) after the infiltration of the precursor into the interstice of the template. The compositions of the precursor had an important effect on the structural order and integrity of the 3DOMMs. The structural strength of the microspheres was obviously improved by adding 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (KH570) into the precursor. The chromatographic column packed with the 3DOMMs showed higher permeability and lower backpressure compared with the column packed with the traditional bulk materials and was suitable for the fast chromatographic separation.

In this study, hierarchical ternary nanocomposites, i.e., Cu–TiO2-mesoporous silica microspheres (Cu–TiO2-MSM), were synthesized as ternary photocatalyst system to improve the visible light photocatalytic degradation of the environmental pollutant model
dye methylene blue (MB). The innovation of this method is in situ depositing TiO2 and Cu2O nanoparticles sequentially onto the surface of mesoporous silica microspheres to form highly active heterostructure. The improved activity for the degradation of MB is attributed
to: (1) the high adsorption capacity of the porous and interconnected-channel-structure MSM to MB; (2) the valence band electrons of TiO2 released from the conduction band generating abundant highly active free radicals, which directly reacted with adsorbed MB. The photocatalytic
degradation efficiency to MB was found to be 98% in 5 min, and almost 100% in 20 min. This study paves a way for the development of a ternary-doped catalyst for visible light photocatalytic degradation and may exhibit widely application in industry.

Silver loaded nanofibrous membrane with high catalytic performance for 4-nitrophenol under continuous gravity-driven filtration was developed in this study. A polydopamine (PDA) microsphere and nanofiber coordinated composite structure was fabricated through an in situ PDA synthesis to achieve a high catalyst loading and controllable residence time of 4-nitrophenol. The incorporated PDA microspheres played an important role for the enhancement of catalytic performance due to the increased surface area (23% increase compared with PAN and PAN-PDAs-Ag) and reduced membrane porosity. Silver loading amount and the residence time of 4-nitrophenol was increased by more than 108% (from 1.2 wt% to 2.5 wt%) and 45% (from 0.79 s to 1.15 s) when comparing with PAN-PDAc-Ag and PAN-PDAs-Ag nanofibrous membrane. The conversion rate of 4-nitrophenol in a gravity-driven filtration process was as high as 97% when PAN-PDAs-Ag nanofibrous membrane was used, which was much higher than the PAN-PDAc-Ag membrane (80%). In addition, the PAN-PDAs-Ag nanofibrous membrane exhibited excellent recycle performance, the conversion rate was maintained as high as 93% after five times of reuse. The microsphere and nanofiber coordinated structure with enhanced surface area and controllable residence time of contaminants proposed in this study might advance the real applications of electrospun nanofibrous membrane for catalytic removal of contaminants.

In the present study, the narrow-dispersed penetrable poly(methacrylic acid- co -ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(MAA- co -EDMA)) microspheres were successfully synthesized based on the sacrificial support method. The poly(MAA- co -EDMA) microspheres mirrored the porous structure of the sacrificial support, i.e. penetrable silica, characteristic of copious mesopores and throughpores. In addition, they possessed large surface area, adjustable hydrophobicity and the cation-exchange ability. Owing to their multi functionalities, they were applied as chromatographic stationary phase to separate proteins in different separation modes, including reversed phase, hydrophobic interaction and weak cation exchange. Moreover, thanks to their throughpores, fast separation at low column backpressure could be achieved in these three modes. Both protein recovery and column stability were satisfactory. The penetrable poly(MAA- co -EDMA) microspheres were potential stationary phase matrix for fast protein separation.

The residue of lincomycin (LIN) in edible animal foodstuffs caused by the widespread use of veterinary drugs is in need of rapid, simple, and sensitive detection methods. The present work introduces a fluorescent microsphere immunoassay (FMIA) for detecting LIN in different samples based on the competitive immunoreaction on the chromatography test strip. The residues of LIN in different samples compete with bovine serum albumin (BSA) labeled LIN conjugates on the T-line to bind to the anti-LIN monoclonal antibody labeled fluorescent microspheres (FM–mAbs). Captured FM–mAbs on the T-line represent the fluorescent intensity, which is detected under UV light and quantified by a fluorescent reader. Under optimized conditions, the dynamic range is from 1.35 to 3.57 ng/mL, and the 50% inhibition concentration (IC50) is 2.20 ng/mL. This method has 4.4% cross-reactivity with clindamycin and negligible cross-reactivity (<0.1%) with other analogues. To reduce the matrix effects, a dilution method is used to pretreat the samples, and the recoveries range from 73.92 to 120.50% with coefficient of variations <21.76%. In comparison with the results of ELISA and colloidal gold immunoassay, FMIA has obvious advantages such as easy operation, time savings, high sensitivity and specificity, and broader prospect.

The development of low-cost, earth-abundant, and high-efficiency catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting is central to developing sustainable and clean energy. The abundant reserves of nickel sulfides are promising noble metal-free materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, a highly active cauliflower-like S-doped nickel microsphere film directly grown on a copper wire (CW) substrate (labeled as NiSx/CW) was facilely prepared via a one-step electrodeposition approach in a choline chloride/ethylene glycol (ethaline)-based deep eutectic solvent. Doping of S is found to induce an interesting structural transition from nanosheets to porous cauliflower-like microspheres, electronic structure changes at the surface, and a significant improvement in the HER catalytic performance. The as-prepared NiS0.25/CW with a Ni/S atomic ratio of 1 : 0.25 exhibits the best performance, showing a negligible onset potential (−18 mV) with a low overpotential (−54 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and small Tafel slope (54 mV dec−1) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Additionally, the NiS0.25/CW catalyst displays good durability and affords long-term electrolysis without activity degradation for 60 h. This study offers a facile synthesis route for in situ growth of the active phases on current collectors to fabricate self-supported noble-metal free HER catalysts and deep insights into the relationships among the S-doping, catalyst microstructure, and catalytic properties.

Hard carbon as a negative electrode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) has great commercial potential and has been widely studied. The sodium-ion intercalation in graphite domains and the filling of closed pores in the low voltage platform region still remain a subject of controversy. We have successfully constructed hard carbon materials with a pseudo-graphitic structure by using polymerizable p -phenylenediamine and dichloromethane as carbon sources. This was achieved by a halogenated amination reaction and oxidative polymerization. It was found that the capacity of hard carbon materials mainly originates from intercalation into graphite domains. The study found that the prepared hard carbon could store 339.33 mAh g −1 of sodium in a reversible way at a current density of 25 mA g −1 , and it had an initial coulomb efficiency of 80.23%. It even maintained a reversible sodium storage capacity of 125.53 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 12.8 A g −1 . Based on the analysis of hard carbon structure and electrochemical performance , it was shown that the materials conform with an “adsorption-intercalation” mechanism for sodium storage.

Dual-enzyme co-embedded materials have shown high potential for achieving efficient detection due to the convenience of two-enzyme cascade reactions. Herein, we developed a dual-enzyme hybrid microsphere (HM) based biosensor to detect diamines (histamine was included for ease of description) in aquatic products. The HM was made from diamine oxidase , horseradish peroxidase , and copper phosphate through the biomineralization method. Under optimal conditions, the system displayed linear color response to histamine of different concentrations ranging from 0 to 200 μg/mL. The detection limit of histamine was 0.15 μg/mL, showing higher sensitivity than the two-step free enzyme assay . Moreover, the detection system exhibited good specificity to diamines. The method was used to detect diamines in commercial samples, and the results were compared with those measured by the high-performance liquid chromatography method. Overall, the proposed assay exhibited high potential in diamine quantification and was readily extended to other cascade enzymatic reaction-based detection strategies.

As efficient activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), cobalt ions play an important role in the degradation of organic pollutants. It is imperative to synthesize PMS activators from low-cost materials with uniform structures to improve the catalytic efficiency and cycle life and reduce the cost of wastewater treatment, which has practical importance. In this work, alkali-activated slag geopolymer microsphere-supported Co catalysts (Co-GMs) were synthesized via a simple solution impregnation method and used for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The Co-GM/PMS system is highly efficient, and the degradation rate of RhB (40 mg/L) reached 99.8% within only 10 min. Moreover, Co-GM has a wide pH range from 3 to 9 and good anti-interference performance for other ions, as well as low Co 2+ leaching (0.809 mg/L) and favorable reusability. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were explored via radical quenching experiments and electron spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, which revealed determined that the major ROS involved in the degradation of RhB are 1 O 2 and SO 4 ·− . The synergistic effect of free and nonfree radicals plays an important role during degradation. Moreover, four probable degradation pathways were proposed via liquid‒phase mass spectrometry (LC‒MS). The results revealed that the removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) reached 74.2% within 60 min. This research innovatively proposed the application of geopolymer composite catalysts in advanced oxidation and developed an ultralow-cost PMS activator for highly efficient degradation of RhB, which represents a new choice for wastewater treatment. Three-dimensional (3D) hepatocyte models have become a research hotspot for evaluating drug metabolism and hepatotoxicity. Compared to two-dimensional (2D) cultures, 3D cultures are better at mimicking the morphology and microenvironment of hepatocytes in vivo. However, commonly used 3D culture techniques are not suitable for high-throughput drug screening (HTS) due to their high cost, complex handling, and inability to simulate cell–extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions. This article describes a method for rapid and reproducible 3D cell cultures with ECM–cell interactions based on 3D culture instrumentation to provide more efficient HTS. We developed a microsphere preparation based on a high-voltage electrostatic (HVE) field and used sodium alginate- and collagen-based hydrogels as scaffolds for 3D cultures of HepG2 cells. The microsphere-generating device enables the rapid and reproducible preparation of bioactive hydrogel microspheres. This 3D culture system exhibited better cell viability, heterogeneity, and drug-metabolizing activity than 2D and other 3D culture models, and the long-term culture characteristics of this system make it suitable for predicting long-term liver toxicity. This system improves the overall applicability of HepG2 spheroids in safety assessment studies, and this simple and controllable high-throughput-compatible method shows potential for use in drug toxicity screening assays and mechanistic studies.Keywords:hepatocyte;3D cultures;hydrogel;microspheres;high-voltage electrostatic field;RNA-seq
