Few-layers 2D O–MoS2 TFN nanofiltration membranes for future desalination

Shishi Yang,Qinliang Jiang,Kaisong Zhang

Advanced membranes with high water flux, excellent salt selectivity as well as superior fouling resistance are highly demanded in water desalination and water treatment. Herein, a new nanocomposite nanofiltration (NF) membrane was reported by introducing the two-dimensional (2D) oxidized molybdenum disulfide (O–MoS 2 ) into the polyamide selective layer. O–MoS 2 with high hydrophilicity and strong electronegativity was synthesized by the oxidation and exfoliation process. The nanocomposite membrane was successfully prepared through interfacial polymerization with the incorporation of O–MoS 2 into organic phase. O–MoS 2 was successfully embedded in the membranes as visualized by SEM and TEM characterizations. The hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the nanocomposite membranes were improved. Compared with the pristine membrane, the performance of the membrane was best when the concentration of O–MoS 2 was 0.010 wt/v%. Consequently, the Na 2 SO 4 rejection increased to 97.9%, and the water flux was 2.5 times higher. In addition, the membrane displayed excellent antifouling properties. The results showed that O–MoS 2 as an excellent 2D modifier would bring more breakthrough improvements in the field of membrane separation .

Enhancing electromagnetic wave absorption performance of Co3O4 nanoparticles functionalized MoS2 nanosheets

Jixing Chai,Junye Cheng,Deqing Zhang,Yingfei Xiong,Xiuying Yang,Xuewei Ba,Sana Ullah,Guangping Zheng,Ming Yan,Maosheng Cao

The 2D molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS 2 -NS) has exhibited great potential in electromagnetic wave absorbing (EMA) due to larger surface area and peculiar electronic properties. However, due to the poor impedance matching and limited electromagnetic loss capability of pure MoS 2 -NS, its practical applications are significantly challenging. Herein, we firstly implanted Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Co 3 O 4 -NPS) on MoS 2 -NS by a facile hydrothermal method to improve the EMA performance. The resulting MoS 2 /Co 3 O 4 hybrids exhibit the minimum reflection loss (RL) value of −43.56 dB at 6.96 GHz with 20 wt% Co 3 O 4 loading under the samples thickness of 4.0 mm. The widest bandwidth with the RL value less than −10 dB of MoS 2 /Co 3 O 4 hybrids was determined to be 4.76 GHz (13.24 to 18 GHz) under the absorber thickness of 2.0 mm. The excellent performance is ascribed to that implanted Co 3 O 4 -NPS on MoS 2 -NS could turn tuning impedance matching and improving synergetic magnetic loss and dielectric loss. Herein, this work not only presents a facile strategy of achieving high-performance MoS 2 -based EMA materials, but also provides important implications for designing the other EMA materials.

CoS2/MoS2 Nanosheets with Enzymatic and Photocatalytic Properties for Bacterial Sterilization

Jin Wang,Yi Wang,Dun Zhang,Chao Chen,Zhanxu Yang

Harvesting a remarkable antibacterial performance is a major point to choose enzymatic catalytic and photocatalytic coupling catalysts. Here, Co–Mo–S mixed metal sulfides (MMSs) were composed by tailoring the composition and energy of metal organic framework (MOF)-based precursors. When n(Co)/n(Mo) = 1:1, Co/Mo-MOF is in the lowest energy state and the vulcanized CoS2/MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) exhibit the best enzymatic property. With the inherent photocatalytic activity, CoS2/MoS2 NSs can degrade more than 90% of methylene blue, methyl orange, rhodamine B, and tetracycline hydrochloride within 1 h. Promoted by intrinsic photocatalytic properties, CoS2/MoS2 NSs exhibit outstanding mimic enzyme-mimicking abilities in a neutral medium, which solve the big problem that nanozymes can only work in acidic environments. Due to the collaboration of enzymatic and photocatalytic catalysis, ·O2– can be generated in a neutral, no H2O2, and dark system, which can effectively kill Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In all, the design of MOFs with adjustable compositions, the breakthrough of enzymatic catalysis working in a neutral medium, and the innovation of sterilization independent of external conditions encourage the utilization in an open environment and the construction of multifunctional materials in biotechnology, biosensors, and biomedicine.

Smart Textiles Based on MoS2 Hollow Nanospheres for Personal Thermal Management

Yuan-Ming Cao,Mi Zheng,Yi-Fei Li,Wang-Yi Zhai,Guo-Tao Yuan,Min Zheng,Ming-Peng Zhuo,Zuo-Shan Wang,Liang-Sheng Liao

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are of particular interest in high-performance photothermal conversion, yet there remains a huge challenge in their practical application in smart textiles for healthcare, energy, and personal protection. Herein, we controllably prepared MoS2 hollow nanospheres with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 36% via a microemulsion-hydrothermal method, which was further applied to construct photothermal fibers for personal thermal management after a hot-blast dip-drying process. Because of the prominent photothermal effect, the temperature of the photothermal fibers sharply increases from the room temperature value of 25.0 to 55.5 °C in 60 s under near-infrared illumination with a power density of 500 W/cm2. Furthermore, the photothermal fiber pad demonstrated an obvious temperature enhancement of 38.0 °C from a skin temperature of 22.0 °C after it was irradiated by natural sunlight for 60 s. Significantly, the antibacterial elimination rates of the photothermal fibers for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are ∼99.9 and ∼99.8%, respectively. This strategy affords an avenue toward the practical application of photothermal materials in smart fibers for personal thermoregulation.

Antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity of novel silkworm-like nisin@PEGylated MoS2

Pengfei Wang,Hualin Wang,Xingyu Zhao,Linlin Li,Minmin Chen,Junfeng Cheng,Jingrong Liu,Xingjiang Li

Recently, molybdenum disulfide functionalized with poly-ethylene glycol (PEGylated MoS 2 ) has been widely used as a new drug delivery vehicle in biomedical field. However, the weak antibacterial activity of PEGylated MoS 2 limits its application as an antibacterial agent. In this work, a novel silkworm-like conjugate of nisin loaded PEGylated MoS 2 ( [email protected] MoS 2 ) was developed for antibacterial application. The morphology and structure of PEGylated MoS 2 were strongly dependent on the Mo/S molar ratio of precursors during the solvothermal process. The silkworm-like skeleton was well kept after loading with nisin. A high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the conjugate was an important cause of bacteria death. Due to the different structure of cell membranes, the sharp edges could more easily puncture into Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) as compared with Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and produced more intracellular ROS, which improved the antibacterial activity of nisin against E. coli . As a result, [email protected] MoS 2 displayed the antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, the toxicity of the conjugate was very low. Therefore, the target conjugate of [email protected] MoS 2 may have great potential application as an antibacterial agent.

3D MoS2@TiO2@poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposite with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Yang Li,Zhao Wang,Hujie Zhao,Xiaojun Huang,Mujie Yang

Formation of heterostructure and nanostructure is promising approach to improving the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 based photocatalysts . In this work, MoS 2 @TiO 2 @poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by freeze drying of hydrothermally treated electrospun PMMA nanofibers containing titanium n-butoxide and MoS 2 nanosheets . As-prepared nanocomposite revealed a 3D nanofiber network structure with high specific surface (83.6 m 2 /g), in which MoS 2 nanosheets loaded with TiO 2 nanoparticles were distributed on the surface of PMMA fibers. MoS 2 @TiO 2 @PMMA showed better photocatalytic performance than MoS 2 @PMMA, TiO 2 @PMMA, MoS 2 @TiO 2 and MoS 2 @P25@PMMA towards the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV illumination. Typically, MoS 2 @TiO 2 @PMMA (100 mg) could degrade MO (10 mg/L, 100 mL) completely in 40 min under UV irradiation , revealing good photocatalytic activity . Moreover, the nanocomposite could be facilely recovered by filtration, and maintain almost the same photocatalytic activity after cycling tests for ten times, indicating excellent stability and recyclability. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite might relate to the heterostructure between MoS 2 and TiO 2 to suppress the recombination of photo-induced charge, and the 3D hierarchical nanoweb structure to afford large specific surface area and high density of active sites.

Improved corrosion resistance of acrylic coatings prepared with modified MoS2 nanosheets

Fan Gao,An Du,Ruina Ma,Chuang Lv,Huazhen Yang,Yongzhe Fan,Xue Zhao,Jianjun Wu,Xiaoming Cao

Acrylic coatings composed of modified MoS 2 nanosheets (MMN) were successfully prepared on the surface of galvanized sheets. Bulk MoS 2 was successfully exfoliated and modified using the ultrasonic method. Then, the effects of MMN on the morphology, composition , and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that MMN reduced the number of cracks in the coatings and made the coatings more compact. Furthermore, the coating corrosion resistance was significantly enhanced. Polarization curves showed that the corrosion current density was reduced by nearly two orders of magnitude by preparing the coating with 0.2 g/L of MMN (sample C M-0.2 ). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results also demonstrated that the barrier performance was stronger for the MMN composite coating.

NiS–MoS2 hetero-nanosheet array electrocatalysts for efficient overall water splitting

Shundong Guan,Xiuli Fu,Zhezhu Lao,Chuanhong Jin,Zhijian Peng

Coupling two-dimensional earth-abundant element based electroactive species with three-dimensional carbon substrates is a promising but highly challenging strategy to prepare highly active, robust and eco-friendly electrocatalysts for sustainably generating hydrogen and oxygen from water splitting. Here we report a facile one-step collaborative growth method to directly construct NiS–MoS2 hetero-nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth (NiS–MoS2 HNSAs/CC) by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant together with Ni, Mo and S sources. Benefiting from the well-exposed electroactive sites, fast transport of catalysis-relevant species and strong synergistic catalytic effect between NiS and MoS2, the as-prepared NiS–MoS2 HNSAs/CC exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for water splitting in 1 mol L−1 KOH, presenting an overpotential of 106 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 203 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction at 10 mA cm−2, and superior kinetics for them with a Tafel slope of 56.7 and 77.4 mV dec−1, respectively. Moreover, a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low cell voltage of 1.54 V for overall water splitting could be achieved along with an excellent stability for at least 24 h. This simple strategy might also be applied to assemble other kinds of active species on different inert substrates, providing new insight into the design and development of high-performance electrocatalysts and other electrochemical devices.

Synthesis of Grain-like MoS2 for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Kai Yao,Zhanwei Xu,Zhi Li,Xinyue Liu,Xuetao Shen,Liyun Cao,Jianfeng Huang

Graphical Letting steam do the work : A grain-like MoS 2 is synthesized by sulfiding MoO 3 using a highly concentrated sulfur vapor. MoS 2 grows epitaxially on three lattice planes, giving rise to particulate MoS 2 coated with MoS 2 nanosheet. Such an architecture gives rise to good dispersity and sufficient distance between neighbors to accommodate the volume change associated with sodiation/desodiation and exhibits a high and stable capacity when used in a sodium-ion battery. MoS 2 is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its attractive theoretical capacity and low cost. MoS 2 generally presents a sheet-like structure based on its (002) lattice plane; however, such a structure tends to result in agglomeration and stacking of the sheets that cannot accommodate volume expansion, resulting in poor cyclability. Herein, grain-like MoS 2 particulates (G-MoS 2 ) are synthesized by sulfiding MoO 3 in highly concentrated sulfur vapor, which results in epitaxial growth of MoS 2 in (002), (100), and (110) lattice planes, with the product consisting of MoS 2 particulates of about 300 nm coated with few-layered MoS 2 nanosheets. The unique G-MoS 2 architecture ensures good dispersion and sufficient distance to accommodate volume expansion during sodiation/desodiation, which effectively prevents stacking of MoS 2 , maintaining structural stability. When employed as the working electrode for SIB, G-MoS 2 delivers a high reversible capacity of 324 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , retaining 312 mAh g −1 over 300 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.8 %. Even when G-MoS 2 is cycled at a high current density (2.0 A g −1 ), the retained capacity is 175 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles. Comparison with literature reveals that these capacities are among the more promising reversible values reported for pure MoS 2 .

The Active Nature of Crystal MoS2 for Converting Sulfur-Containing Syngas

Chang Liu,Xue-Ying Cui,Yong-Hong Song,Min-Li Zhu,Zhao-Tie Liu,Zhong-Wen Liu

Graphical Cutting edge : The bulk MoS 2 with varied crystallite sizes was investigated for the catalytic hydrogenation of CO, and a hexagonal-prism-shaped model was developed to describe the nature of different active sites on the MoS 2 crystallite. The CO conversion decreased in the order of rim sites > edge sites ≫ basal sites, and the highest activity over the bulk MoS 2 with smallest particles was ascribed to the highest exposure of the rim sites. Molybdenum disulfides are attractive sulfur-tolerant catalysts suitable for the direct conversion of sulfur-containing syngas, which avoids the expensive step of the deep desulfurization. However, the catalytic activity of MoS 2 -based catalysts is relatively low. To improve the activity, previous works have focused on modifying MoS 2 with various promoters and supports, but the structural aspects are largely overlooked. In this work, we investigated the active nature of the MoS 2 -based catalysts for the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide. Thus, the bulk MoS 2 with varied crystallite sizes was synthesized by the hydrothermal and the thermal decomposition methods. The catalysts before and after catalytic tests were characterized by in-situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscope techniques. The CO hydrogenation under low-temperature methanation conditions (The syngas with a H 2 /CO=2 and 40.0 ppm H 2 S, T=360 °C, and P=2 MPa) was applied to evaluate MoS 2 as a catalyst for converting syngas. The catalytic results indicate that the MoS 2 with smaller crystallite sizes exhibited a higher CO conversion. By correlating the structural propriety with the catalytic activity, a hexagonal-prim-shaped model was developed to describe different sites on the MoS 2 crystallite. Based on this model, the activity of different active sites on the bulk MoS 2 for CO hydrogenation decreased in the order of rim sites > edge sites ≫ basal sites. The highest catalytic activity over the bulk MoS 2 with smallest particles was attributed to the highest exposure of the rim sites.

Hierarchical hollow MoS2 microspheres as materials for conductometric NO2 gas sensors

Yixue Li,Zhongxiao Song,Yanan Li,Shuai Chen,Sha Li,Yanhuai Li,Hairong Wang,Zuankai Wang

Surface structure control at the atomic scale is an efficient strategy for improving the performance of gas sensing. Herein, hierarchical hollow MoS 2 microspheres with enhanced performance for NO 2 gas sensing were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The introduction of micro-nano hierarchical structure improved the exposure of active edge sites of MoS 2 , and the efficiency of gas and carriers exchange and transportation during the reaction, which synthetically contribute the sensing performance enhancement. With additional optimization of reaction conditions, the hierarchical hollow MoS 2 microspheres show excellent sensing performance with 3.1 times enhancement compared with the contrast sample of smooth solid structure. The rapid and sensitive response, decreased working temperature, as well as the prominent selectivity, enable the material with attractive sensing performance for NO 2 detection. This study provides new opportunities on the surface morphology control at both the micro- and nanoscale for enhancing the sensing performance of MoS 2 .

MoS2/Nitrogen-doped graphene as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Kai Zhao,Wei Gu,Longyun Zhao,Cuiling Zhang,Weidong Peng,Yuezhong Xian

A simple yet effective strategy was developed to generate a non-precious oxygen electrode electrocatalyst of MoS 2 /nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) by physical mixing MoS 2 sheets with NG. The micrometer-sized MoS 2 sheets were obtained through ultrasonication exfoliation of the bulk MoS 2 , only showing little oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. MoS 2 /NG hybrid was obtained by loading MoS 2 sheets onto NG through ultrasonication, and the resulting nanocomposites exhibited improved electrocatalytic activity for ORR with dominant 4 electron pathway in alkaline solutions. The exposed active edges as well as the synergistic effect and reduced resistance connection jointly make the MoS 2 /NG composite a highly competitive ORR catalyst.
