Compensating Sodium Ions and Regulating Interface Chemistry through a High-Capacity Organic Salt for Practical Na-Ion Batteries

Jincan Shao,Xing Zhou,Wenxi Hu,Dawei Xu,Meilong Wang,Deda Peng,Jin Han,Ya You

Sodium-ion batteries are promising energy storage devices due to abundant sodium, inherent safety, and low cost, but irreversible sodium loss during initial cycles limits their reversible capacity and long-term stability. Cathode sodium-supplemented additives offer a simple and fabrication-compatible strategy. Herein, an organic sodium-supplemented additive, sodium squarate (Na2C4O4, NCO), is introduced into the high-capacity Prussian white (PW) cathodes to achieve efficient sodium compensation. During the first charge, NCO undergoes decomposition, releasing additional Na+ ions to compensate for irreversible sodium consumption associated with SEI formation and other interfacial side reactions. Meanwhile, the generated CO2 participates in interfacial reactions, leading to the formation of a carbonate-rich cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the PW cathode, while its diffusion toward the anode promotes the construction of a robust SEI enriched with carbonate species and sodium fluoride (NaF) on the hard-carbon anode. As a result, the PW-10% NCO||HC full cell delivers an enhanced discharge capacity of 100 mAh g–1, compared to 53 mAh g–1 for the pristine PW||HC full cell. Moreover, a multilayer pouch cell obtained a capacity retention of 80.1% after 100 cycles. Overall, this work highlights NCO as an effective cathode sodium-supplemented additive and provides insights into the interfacial regulation for sodium-ion full cells.

Simultaneously achieving superior piezoelectric properties and good piezoelectric thermal stabilities in <001>-textured (K,Na)NbO3-based ceramic

Fengyun Liu,Jialiang Zhang,Lu Li

(K,Na)NbO₃-based ceramics are widely regarded as a promising type of lead-free piezoelectric materials to replace the current lead-containing ones. However, due to polymorphic phase transitions, achieving a desirable comprehensive piezoelectric performance of high piezoelectric coefficient d ₃₃ and large electromechanical coupling factors k p , k t and k 33 along with good thermal stabilities (which are characterized by minimal temperature dependence and ageing degradation) in them is extremely challenging. The poled and subsequently thermally-stabilized <001>-textured 0.98(K₀.₄₈Na₀.₅₂)₀.₉₉Li₀.₀₁(Nb₀.₉₈Sb₀.₀₂)O₃–0.02(Bi₀.₅₀Na₀.₅₀)ZrO₃ ceramic was recently identified as an effective solution to the issue. It possesses a d ₃₃ of 405 pC/N along with k ₚ ≈ 0.80, k ₜ ≈ 0.60, k ₃₃ ≈ 0.88 at room temperature, and its piezoelectric properties are of weak temperature dependence across a broad operational range and show remarkable retention even after thermal ageing at 250 °C. Particularly, its d ₃₃ has an average of 425 pC/N with the variation ≤ ± 6.5% from room temperature to 100 °C, and its k ₜ keeps almost constant between -60 °C and 110 °C. In general, this ceramic exhibits an outstanding comprehensive performance that well competes to those of benchmark commercial piezoceramics such as PZT-5A and PZT-5H, indicating the great potential for advanced ultrasonic applications. Analysis reveals that the excellent piezoelectric properties originate from the synergistic effect of crystallographic anisotropy and an engineered, dense domain structure of orthorhombic phase. Meanwhile, the remarkable thermal ageing stability is possibly attributed to the relaxed crystal structure and the stabilized domain structure, both facilitated by the repeated orthorhombic-tetragonal phase transitions in the thermal treatment.

Enhanced Na+ Transport in Cu-MOF Reinforced PEO Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte for High-Rate Sodium Metal Batteries

Yuping Wu,Hu Fu,Bolin Li,Qinran Zhang,Zhirong Chen,Haichen Li,Hongming Zhou

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes are regarded as highly promising solid electrolyte materials owing to their favorable chain flexibility. However, their practical application is hindered by low room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties. To address these issues, a metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF) with a 2D layered structure and 1D microchannels is introduced into PEO to form a composite solid electrolyte. The results reveal that Cu-MOF can suppress PEO crystallization through steric hindrance and coordination interactions, thereby increasing the fraction of the amorphous phase. Moreover, its unsaturated metal sites can attract TFSI−anions, promoting the dissociation of the sodium salt and enhancing sodium-ion transport. Theoretical calculations and molecular simulations further confirm the regulatory role of Cu-MOF in ion transport. Leveraging this mechanism, the Na3V2(PO4)3/C|PCM-8%|Na cell delivers exceptional electrochemical performance over a wide temperature range. At room temperature, the capacity exhibits virtually no decay after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, and outstanding rate capability is maintained even at a high rate of 4 C. At a temperature of 65 °C, a capacity retention of 91.4% is achieved after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. This study offers a highly promising strategy for the development of wide-temperature-range, high-performance solid-state sodium batteries.

Expanding Catalytic Active Surface via Dual-Phase Interfaces for High-Energy-Density Quasi-Solid-State Na–S Batteries

Lu Xuan,Jiang Sicong,Zhao Hongyang,Zheng Xiaobo,Zhang Yiwen,Yang Kesong,Ding Shujiang,Hu Xiaofei,Li Weiyang

Quasi-solid-state sodium–sulfur (Na–S) batteries are widely regarded as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage due to their higher energy density and enhanced safety over traditional liquid-electrolyte counterparts. However, electrolyte solidification restricts ion transport within the sulfur cathode, leading to poor sulfur utilization and exacerbating sluggish sodium polysulfide (NaPS) conversion kinetics. Current cathode designs mitigate this challenge by introducing a high proportion of conductive additives to expand the sulfur–carbon-electrolyte triple-phase interfaces (TPIs), which inevitably sacrifices the practical energy density of the battery. This challenge becomes more severe under practical conditions of high sulfur contents (50 wt %), where both ionic and electronic pathways are simultaneously obstructed. Here, we develop a presodiated TiO 2 (Na x TiO 2 ) electrocatalyst possessing ion-electron dual-conductive characteristics via an electrochemical ion-intercalation approach. The introduction of Na x TiO 2 extends the active surface beyond conventional TPIs, enabling rapid catalytic conversion of NaPSs directly at the sulfur-Na x TiO 2 dual-phase interfaces (DPIs). Mechanistic studies show that Na intercalation modulates the local Ti–O coordination environment and the Ti 3d-O 2p electronic structure, which significantly improves the electronic conductivity and interfacial Na + transfer kinetics of TiO 2 while reducing the energy barrier for the rate-determining Na 2 S 2 -to-Na 2 S step in NaPS conversion. Consequently, an ultrahigh sulfur utilization exceeding 80% is achieved in a high-sulfur-content cathode (70 wt %), delivering a high initial specific capacity of 1391.2 mAh g –1 alongside robust cyclability over 500 cycles. The assembled practical pouch cell achieves an impressive energy density of 372 Wh kg –1 . This work offers valuable insights into developing high-energy-density solid-state Na–S batteries for practical applications.

Efficient Removal of Cesium Ions from Radioactive Wastewater Using Na+-Intercalated Layered Manganese Oxide via Solid-Phase Synthesis

Fan Wang,Qi Zheng,Jin Wu,Ningchao Zheng,Qiang Wu,Xu Zhang,Ji Wang,Wenlong Li,Mohammed F. Hamza,Amr Fouda,Lu Gao,Yuezhou Wei,Xiangbiao Yin

Abstract Efficient capture of radioactive cesium is critical for the long-term development and environmental protection of nuclear energy. This article reports the preparation of Na+-based cation-intercalated manganese oxide (CIMO) via a solid-phase reaction method and their application to the removal of cesium ions from simulated radioactive wastewater. Among them, the manganese oxide structure obtained by Na+ intercalation is of particular interest due to its unique layered structure, excellent physicochemical properties, and excellent adsorption performance for cesium. According to the experimental findings, the layered manganese oxides exhibit outstanding affinity for Cs+ across a broad pH range of 2–8. The maximum adsorption capacity of CIMO for Cs+ is 204.23 mg/g, and the layered manganese oxide exhibits good recyclability. Additionally, in the presence of competing ions and in multiple real wastewater samples, CIMO showed exceptional adsorption removal capability for Cs+. Furthermore, it was shown that the mechanisms by which CIMO removes Cs+ ions are Na+/Cs+ ion exchange and surface electrostatic interactions. Therefore, because of its easy production and environmental friendliness, CIMO can be regarded as a potential adsorbent for the effective removal of Cs+ from radioactive waste water.

Enhanced Anionic Redox Reaction of Na-Layered Li-Containing Mn-Based Cathodes by Cu-Mediated Reductive Coupling Mechanism

Danyang Li,Can Liu,Shu Zhao,Fujie Li,Hao Li,Chao Wang,Xiu Song Zhao

Na-layered Li-containing Mn-based cathodes (NaxLiyMn1-yO2, NLMOs) with additional Na+storage ability resulting from the anionic redox reaction (ARR) hold great promise for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). However, practical applications of NLMOs encounter challenges, such as migration of transition metal Mn, loss of lattice oxygen, and voltage decay during cycling. Here, we show that Cu plays an important role in enhancing the ARR via the reductive coupling mechanism (RCM). Results shows that a Cu2+/Fe3+modified NLMO sample delivers a Na+storage capacity as high as 174 mA h g−1at 0.2C, higher than that of a Zn2+/Fe3+modified NLMO sample (130 mA h g−1) and NLMO (154 mA h g−1). Both in situ and ex situ characterization results indicate that the obvious improvement in the electrochemical performance of the Cu2+/Fe3+modified NLMO is due to the additional overlaps between the Cu 3d and O 2p orbitals, which is beneficial for the RCM. As a result, the ARR is enhanced so as to increase the Na+storage capacity.

Pseudocapacitance-Enhanced Storage Kinetics of 3D Anhydrous Iron (III) Fluoride as a Cathode for Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Tao Zhang,Yan Liu,Guihuan Chen,Hengjun Liu,Yuanyuan Han,Shuhao Zhai,Leqing Zhang,Yuanyuan Pan,Qinghao Li,Qiang Li

Transition metal fluoride (TMF) conversion cathodes, with high energy density, are recognized as promising candidates for next-generation high-energy Li/Na-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). Unfortunately, the poor electronic conductivity and detrimental active material dissolution of TMFs seriously limit the performance of TMF-LIBs/SIBs. A variety of FeF3-based composites are designed to improve their electrochemical characteristics. However, the storage mechanism of the conversion-type cathode for Li+and Na+co-storage is still unclear. Here, the storage mechanism of honeycomb iron (III) fluoride and carbon (FeF3@C) as a general cathode for LIBs/SIBs is analyzed by kinetics. In addition, the FeF3@C cathode shows high electrochemical performance in a full-cell system. The results show that the honeycomb FeF3@C shows excellent long-term cycle stability in LIBs (208.3 mA h g−1at 1.0 C after 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 98.1%). As a cathode of SIBs, the rate performance is unexpectedly stable. The kinetic analysis reveals that the FeF3@C cathode exhibit distinct ion-dependent charge storage mechanisms and exceptional long-durability cyclic performance in the storage of Li+/Na+, benefiting from the synergistic contribution of pseudocapacitive and reversible redox behavior. The work deepens the understanding of the conversion-type cathode in Li+/Na+storage.Keywords:full-cell;kinetic analysis;metal fluorides;storage mechanism

In-situ constructing a supersodiophilic fluffy surface layer on a Cu foam host for stable Na metal anodes

Jiuyang Xia,Fengping Zhang,Juli Liang,Kaixin Fang,Wenwei Wu,Xuehang Wu

Commercial Cu foam can be employed as a 3D current collector to accommodate Na metal for stable sodium metal batteries (SMBs). However, few studies focus on regulating the interphase structure and properties of Cu foam to achieve fast and uniform Na impregnation. Herein, a facile and controllable oxidation treatment strategy is used to in-situ construct a fluffy CuO/Cu 2 O surface layer on the skeleton of Cu foam (SF–Cu-3.6). The oxidation degree and interphase structure of Cu foam can be rationally designed by adjusting the concentration of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 oxidant, which is directly related to the driving force of Na infusion. With an optimized interface, Na metal can be rapidly infused into SF-Cu-3.6 within 5 s and a structurally complete Na/SF-Cu-3.6 composite electrode with a flat surface and no visible void can be obtained. The SF-Cu-3.6 with a large surface area can be used as a 3D host for Na metal to lower the local current density during cycling, resulting in uniform Na deposition without dendrite formation and growth. In virtue of the structural advantages, the symmetric Na/SF-Cu-3.6 cell exhibits flat charge/discharge plateaus with a low overpotential of 12 mV and stable cycling up to 1000 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 . When paired with NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , the rate performance of the full cell using the Na/SF-Cu-3.6 composite anode is significantly better than that of the full cell using a bare Na anode.

Accommodating sodium into three-dimensional hosts with a nanoscale sodiophilic layer towards stable pre-stored Na metal anodes

Juli Liang,Wenwei Wu,Yang Chao,Yilong Li,Junfei Wu,Yulu Xie,Xuehang Wu

Although sodium (Na) metal is a promising anode material for high-energy Na batteries, it is still difficult for it to achieve a long lifespan due to dendrite growth and an unfavorable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with sluggish ion transport kinetics. Herein, a facile and mild hydrothermal method is developed to grow vertically aligned ZnO nanosheets on Ni foam, which effectively facilitates uniform thermal infusion and confinement of Na within the three-dimensional (3D) host. In virtue of the large surface area of NF, the local current density can be effectively lowered, which is conductive to uniform Na deposition. More importantly, the products obtained by the reaction between ZnO and Na metal during thermal infusion of Na affect the decomposition of electrolyte, leading to the formation of SEI film with enhanced Na-ion transport property. Electrochemical studies show that the resultant Na-metal/Zn-modified Ni foam composite (Na–Zn-NF) anode can stably cycle for more than 2000 and 550 h at a current density of 1 and 3 mA cm−2 in symmetric cells, respectively. When assembled into full cells against NaTi2(PO4)3/C (NTP/C) and Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7)/C (NFPP/C) cathodes, the Na–Zn-NF anode also exhibits excellent cycling stability and stable Coulombic efficiencies. This work provides an effective strategy for simultaneously achieving the enhancement of the surface sodiophilicity of 3D hosts and the optimization of an electrode/electrolyte interphase for stable Na metal anodes.

Multi-step Controllable Catalysis Method for the Defense of Sodium Polysulfide Dissolution in Room-Temperature Na–S Batteries

Qianru Ma,Wei Zhong,Guangyuan Du,Yuruo Qi,Shu-juan Bao,Maowen Xu,Changming Li

Room-temperature (RT) sodium–sulfur batteries hold great promise for the development of efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the dissolution of long-chain polysulfides is a huge obstacle. In this work, a composite cathode which integrates Ni/Co bimetal nanoparticles as the catalyst and carbon spheres with abundant channels as the host is prepared for RT Na–S batteries. Moreover, a valuable strategy to reduce the dissolution of polysulfides by accurately regulating the two-step reaction kinetics of polysulfide transformation (from Na2S to long-chain polysulfides and then from polysulfides to sulfur) is presented. Through adjusting the ratio of Ni and Co, the optimal cathode with a Ni/Co ratio of 1:2 can retard the first conversion of Na2S to polysulfides and simultaneously accelerate the subsequent transformation of polysulfides to sulfur. In this case, the soluble polysulfides can immediately transform to solid sulfur as soon as it appears, thus avoiding the shuttle of polysulfides. The galvanostatic intermittent titration method and in situ Raman are employed to supervise the transformation of polysulfides during the discharge/charge process. As a result, the composite shows excellent performance as the cathode of RT liquid/quasi-solid-state Na–S batteries in terms of specific capacities, rate capability, and cycle stability.

High temperature capture of low concentration CO2 by Na/Ca-doped lithium orthosilicate with KIT-6 as precursor

Yanfei Jia,Jianwen Wei,Yuan Yuan,Xiaobin zhou,Linlin Geng,Lei Liao

Using KIT-6 as the silica source, a series of Li 4 SiO 4 adsorbents (KIT-6-Li 4 SiO 4 ) were synthesized by impregnation precipitation method for high temperature CO 2 capture. Then, the KIT-6-Li 4 SiO 4 -800–4 (KL-800–4) material, was selected to analyze the improvement of the adsorption performance by Ca 2+ /Na + eutectic doping modification. These adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and low temperature N 2 adsorption/desorption, and the CO 2 adsorption capacity of them was explored. At 600 °C and under 15 vol% CO 2 , KL-Ca0.03 and KL-Na0.06 sorbents resulted in a CO 2 uptake of 29.17 wt% and 35.35 wt% (close to the theoretical maximum), respectively, which are much higher than that of KL-800–4 (14.73 wt%). After 10 adsorption/desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of KL-Na0.06 increased by 1.35 wt%. We found that KL-Na0.06 has more advantages compared with traditional lithium orthosilicate and undoped adsorbents, including lower energy consumption, higher CO 2 adsorption capacity and better cycling ability. Finally, the double exponential model had a high degree of fit for the adsorption of CO 2 by Li 4 SiO 4 .

Crystal facet and Na-doping dual engineering ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets with efficient oxygen activation for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Kunyu Chen,Yiwei Huang,Meina Huang,Yanqiu Zhu,Ming Tang,Renjie Bi,Meiping Zhu

Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) based on semiconductors offers a sustainable and promising way for environmental remediation. However, the photocatalytic performance currently suffers from weak light-harvesting ability, rapid charge combination and a lack of accessible reactive sites. Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal candidates to overcome these problems and become hotpots in the research fields. Herein, we demonstrate an ultrathin (<4 nm thick) Na-doped BiOCl nanosheets with {001} facets (Na-BOC-001) fabricated via a facile bottom-up approach. Because of the synergistic effect of highly exposed active facets and optimal Na doping on the electronic and crystal structure, the Na-BOC-001 showed an upshifted conduction band (CB) with stronger reduction potential for O2 activation, more defective surface for enhanced O2 adsorption, as well as the highest visible-light driven charge separation and transfer ability. Compared with the bulk counterparts (BOC-010 and BOC-001), the largest amount of active species and the best photocatalytic performance for the tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation were achieved for the Na-BOC-001 under visible-light irradiation, even though it had slightly weaker visible-light absorption ability. Moreover, the effect of the Na doping and crystal facet on the possible pathways for TC degradation was investigated. This work offers a feasible and economic strategy for the construction of highly efficient ultrathin 2D materials.
