The implementation of Ni-rich cathodes with high energy density has been critically restrained by stress corrosion. Herein, crack-free LiNbO3-coated LiNi0.88Co0.10Mn0.02O2, as theoretically predicted, demonstrates highly reversible lithiation/delithiation. Mechanically, the phase transition (H1 → H2 → H3) is significantly alleviated by the excogitation of the interfacial force invoked by the LiNbO3 coating layer, as verified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. Meanwhile, the stabilities of the crystal structure are remarkably strengthened by the strong Nb–O bond activated by Nb5+ doping that is confirmed by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction and differential capacitance curves. Chemically, the interface shielding effect is conducive to protecting the electrode against electrolyte corrosion along with subsequent transition-metal dissolution, ultimately rendering a faster/highly convertible lithium-ion diffusion. Greatly, the excellent electrochemical properties (74% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 2 C within 2.5–4.3 V) and structural stability (the morphology remains intact after 500 cycles at 5 C within 2.5–4.3 V) are successfully achieved. Given this, this elaborate work might inaugurate a potential avenue for rationally tuning the structure/interface evolution toward Ni-rich materials.

Selective photocatalytic dehydrogenation of saturated N-heterocycles represents a sustainable photoredox route for synthesizing valuable nitrogen-containing unsaturated heteroaromatic organics. Herein, we report a Ni-decorated 3D sea urchin-like CdS composite (Ni/CdS) as a dual-functional photocatalyst for the efficient and selective semi-dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) to 3,4-dihydroisoquinoline (DHIQ) coupled with H 2 evolution under visible light irradiation. The surface-decorated Ni nanoparticles significantly enhance the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs over Ni/CdS, and act as reactive sites for proton reduction to H 2 , thereby leading to the improved dual-functional photoredox catalysis. Mechanistic studies identify the carbon-centered radical (•CH(NH)C 8 H 8 ) as a pivotal intermediate in the photocatalytic semi-dehydrogenation of THIQ. This study establishes an effective strategy for designing noble-metal-free photocatalytic systems that integrate selective organic transformations with H 2 evolution in a cooperative manner.

A nanocluster Ni–WC/C electrocatalyst is prepared through a sequential impregnation method and is used for the urea electrooxidation in alkaline conditions. The micro-morphology, lattice parameter , composition and surface states of Ni–WC/C particles are determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) analysis. The electrooxidation activity and stability of the Ni–WC/C catalyst are also investigated by cyclic voltammograms and chronoamperograms. Characterization results indicate that the Ni nanoclusters are uniformly distributed on the WC/C framework, and the Ni–WC/C catalyst shows high electrocatalytic activity and stability for urea electrooxidation. The maximum current density at the Ni–WC/C electrode is almost 700 mA cm −2 mg −1 which is one order of magnitude higher than that at the Ni/C electrode, and the steady current density at the Ni–WC/C electrode is also markedly improved. Furthermore, the ESA values and XPS spectra indicate that the enhanced performance of the Ni–WC/C catalyst could be attributed to the structure effect and electron effect between nickel and tungsten carbide .

A Ni(OH)2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite with a well-defined hexagonal nanosheet morphology was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal approach using graphene oxide (GO) and nickel sulfate hexahydrate (NiSO4·6H2O) as precursors. Crucially, a commercial-level high mass loading of 8 mg·cm–2 was successfully achieved on the electrode. Structural analysis confirmed that the incorporation of rGO effectively prevents the agglomeration of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets, while forming an interconnected three-dimensional (3D) conductive network. This unique structure enhances the overall electrical conductivity and facilitates rapid ion diffusion even under heavy mass loading conditions. Electrochemical characterization in a three-electrode system revealed that the composite synthesized with a GO concentration of 1 mg·mL–1 (NG-1) exhibited remarkable rate capability across current density ranging from 0.5 to 5 A·g–1. At a current density of 0.5 A·g–1, it delivered a superior specific capacity of 369.5 C·g–1. When assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor with activated carbon (AC), the hybrid device delivered a specific capacitance of 101.6 F·g–1 (174.4 C·g–1) at 0.5 A·g–1. More remarkably, it demonstrated exceptional cycling stability with 102.2% initial capacitance retention after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles at 2 A·g–1, confirming the excellent electrochemical stability of the NG-1 electrode. Notably, the assembled device attained an energy density of 36.12 Wh·kg–1 at a power density of 400 W·kg–1, significantly surpassing conventional electrochemical double-layer capacitors. The Ni(OH)2/rGO nanocomposites developed in this work combine facile synthesis with outstanding electrochemical properties, providing a promising material solution for high-power energy storage applications.

The CO 2 methanation is an important process in coal-to-gas, power-to-gas and CO 2 removal for spacecraft. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives have been demonstrated as high-performance catalysts for CO 2 upgrading processes. However, due to the high costs and low stability of MOF derivatives, it still remains challenge for the development of alternative synthesis methods avoiding MOF precursors. In this work, we present the sol-gel method for loading Ni-MOF to silica support in two-steps. Upon modifying the procedure, a more simplified one-step sol-gel method has been developed. Furthermore, the obtained Ni/SiO 2 catalyst still exhibits great catalytic performance with a CO 2 conversion of 77.2% and considerable CH 4 selectivity of ~100% during a stability test for 52 h under a low temperature of 310 °C and high GHSV of 20,000 mL·g −1 ·h −1 . Therefore, this work provides a ground-breaking direct strategy for loading MOF derived catalysts, and might shed a light on the preparation of highly dispersed Ni/SiO 2 catalyst.

A novel Ni@carbon nanocomposites/three-dimensional kenaf stem-derived macroporous carbon (3D-KSCs)-integrated electrode was prepared by calcinating Ni-benzenetricarboxylic acid (Ni-BTC) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) grown on 3D-KSCs under N 2 atmosphere for electrochemical glucose sensor. Both Ni-BTC MOFs/3D-KSCs and Ni@carbon nanocomposites/3D-KSCs-integrated electrode were studied by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. These results showed that many flowerlike Ni-BTC MOFs which were composed of sticklike nanostructures were grown on the surface of 3D-KSCs. After calcination under N 2 atmosphere, lots of pearl chain-like nanostructures were formed and uniformly arrayed on 3D-KSC electrode. XRD results confirmed that the Ni-BTC MOFs were successfully transformed into pearl chain-like Ni@carbon nanocomposites. Both electrochemical behaviors and electrocatalytic performances of Ni@carbon nanocomposites/3D-KSCs-integrated electrode were explored. Thanks to its large specific surface area, 3D macropores and special structures, the Ni@carbon nanocomposites/3D-KSCs-integrated electrode showed wide linear range (0.024–1.2 mM) and low detection limit (7.85 μM, S / N = 3) for glucose sensing. Noteworthily, the MOFs/3D-KSCs might be proposed to prepare other nanocomposites for electrochemical biosensing.

The nitrogen–doped porous carbon (NPC) foam composites modified by magnetic nanoparticles exhibit lightweight properties and excellent impedance matching, making them highly valuable for research and applications in electromagnetic wave shielding and absorption. The present work focuses on binary Co/Ni–MOF as the subject, combining it with carbon foam by adjusting the Co/Ni ratio to obtain various MOF derivatives, thereby exploring their electromagnetic properties. The composite CoNi-2/NPC, yielded through calcinating the precursor CoNi-2/HMT (Co: Ni = 1: 1) at 500 °C, demonstrates excellent wave absorption performance with a low filler content of 15 wt%, achieving a minimum reflection loss of –52.7 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.36 GHz. The radar cross section (RCS) simulation reveals an RCS reduction of 22.8 dB m² for CoNi-2/NPC. The excellent electromagnetic absorption can be ascribed to the increased interfacial polarization, the improved impedance matching, and defect-induced polarization loss. The present research offers a novel perspective for the design of high–performance electromagnetic absorbing materials featuring a broad absorption bandwidth through controlling their magnetic components.

NiMn 2 O 4 (NMO) coated Gd-doped CeO 2 (GDC) and NiO powders are prepared by a hydrothermal method for the anode of a metal (Ni-10 at.% Fe)-supported solid oxide fuel cell fueled by wet CH 4 (3 vol.% H 2 O). NMO remains on NiO but dissolves into GDC at 1400 °C. Upon reduction in H 2 at 700 °C for 2 h, Ni nanoparticles exsolve on the doped-CeO 2 (DCO) substrate (DCO@Ni), while MnO nanoparticles form on Ni (Ni@MnO). DCO@Ni demonstrates high catalytic activity for reforming wet CH 4 and high resistance to carbon deposition with a yield of H 2 increasing from 11 (500 °C) to 33 (700 °C) ml min −1 and remaining around 25 ml min −1 at 600 °C for 30 h. The metal-supported single-cell with a Ni@MnO-DCO@Ni anode shows high initial and durable electrochemical performance with a maximum power density increasing from 160 (500 °C) to 720 (700 °C) mW cm −2 and a cell voltage remaining above 0.55 V at 600 °C for 200 h under 400 mA cm −2 and 20 ml min −1 . Such high performance is ascribed to the metal support with low ohmic resistance and the engineered anode with high catalytic activity and enhanced resistance to carbon deposition.

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon-based composites have emerged as promising candidates for high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW)-absorbing materials, yet the atomic-scale mechanism linking compositional doping to EMW energy dissipation remains to be clarified. Herein, core–shell SiO2@Ni–Co/CNTs composites were fabricated via epitaxial Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) growth on monodisperse SiO2 microspheres (∼1 μm) and controlled pyrolysis, focusing on the Ni-doping-driven charge rearrangement and synergistic mechanism. Material characterizations confirmed the well-defined core–shell structure, while electromagnetic analysis showed the optimized SiO2@Ni–Co/CNTs-2 sample achieved ultrastrong performance: minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −61.21 dB at 1.85 mm, ultrabroad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.64 GHz (11.36–18 GHz) at 2.09 mm, and 25.5 dB radar cross-section (RCS) reduction at 60°. Crucially, off-axis electron holography visualized interfacial charge accumulation, and DFT calculations quantified Ni-induced charge rearrangement, which intensifies dipole/interfacial polarization to dielectric loss enhancement. Combined with the optimized bimetallic magnetic resonance, this charge rearrangement drives a powerful synergistic effect that maximizes EMW attenuation. This work clarifies the “charge rearrangement-synergistic loss” link and provides a “structure-composition-charge-function” design paradigm for high-performance EMW absorbers.

Spintronic catalysis remains largely unexplored for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we propose a novel spin-control strategy by constructing an oriented, 1D core-shell CoB@Ni(OH) 2 nanochain architecture. The spin-ordered amorphous ferromagnetic (FM) CoB core effectively induces spin polarization in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Ni(OH) 2 shell via FM@AFM coupling. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that an applied magnetic field (MF) induces spin alignment in Ni(OH) 2 . This MF-guided spin alignment triggers directional Ni orbital splitting, promotes d-charge accumulation at Ni–O sites, and activates a switch to the highly efficient lattice oxygen mechanism. Consequently, the CoB@Ni(OH) 2 catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 472 mV at 100 mA cm -2 and exhibits stability exceeding 150 h under an MF, markedly outperforming its non-magnetic operation. This work demonstrates that engineering FM@AFM interfaces enables the transformation from spin disorder to spin alignment, opening a new avenue for spin-regulated electrocatalytic material design.

Transition metal selenides (TMSes) are promising electrode materials for supercapacitors but suffer from poor conductivity and structural stability, restricting their electrochemical performance. Herein, we report a synergistic complex modification and interface engineering strategy to construct porous Ni(OH)₂-Ni₀.₈₅Se heterogeneous nanosheets anchored on elastic rGO-PEDOT:PSS (RPP) foam (RPP@Ni(OH)₂-Ni₀.₈₅Se) for high-performance electrochemical electrodes. The heterogeneous interface between Ni(OH)₂ and Ni₀.₈₅Se optimizes electronic structure, accelerates charge transfer, and relieves volume expansion. Meanwhile, the hierarchically porous RPP substrate provides rapid ion diffusion pathways and robust structural support for the composite electrode. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the assembled device delivers a high specific capacitance of 143 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , with a retains 58.2% capacitance after 5000 cycles. It also has a relatively high power density (375.1 W kg −1 ) and energy density (44.7 Wh kg −1 ). Theoretical calculations reveal that the built-in interfacial electric field effectively reduces the redox reaction energy barrier and improves electrochemical activity of the electrode. This work clarifies the structure-activity relationship between heterogeneous interface engineering and electrochemical performance, and provides a universal strategy for designing high-stability, high-activity transition metal selenide composite electrodes.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) largely determines the performance of Al/seawater batteries, but reported conventional HER catalysts possess low intrinsic activity in the seawater environment, even for the expensive and scarce Pt-based ones. For the first time, a NF-supported Ni-BTC nanoflower array (NF@Ni-BTC NFA) has been synthesized via urea-mediated self-assembly, whereby the urea in situ generates NH 3 to serve as a modulator to both coordinate with Ni 2+ and deprotonate BTC. This 3-D nanostructure exhibits superior HER activity than the NF-supported nanosheet array obtained without urea and even commercial Pt/C in the KOH-added simulated seawater. An Al/seawater battery has been fabricated directly using NF@Ni-BTC NFA as the cathode, showing higher power density, anode efficiency, and energy density than all the reported Al/H 2 O batteries measured in the electrolyte without addition of corrosion inhibitors. This work not only develops a low-cost, highly efficient noble-metal-free HER catalyst for high-performance Al/seawater batteries via facile and economical self-assembly strategy, but provides scientific insights for the self-assembly mechanism and high performance of the HER catalyst and the Al/seawater batteries.
