Unveiling synergistic H+/O2−/e− transport in modular triple-phase composite air electrodes for efficient reversible protonic ceramic cells

Fangjie Liu,Zaifu Gong,HaiZhao Li,Wuhui Li,Yuliang Liu,Qingjie Wang

Proposes a functional modularization strategy to fabricate BZCY-GDC-LCO electrodes. • Exhibits low polarization resistance (0.141 Ω·cm 2 ) with 216 h stable operation. • Single cell delivers 0.757 W·cm −2 (FC) and 1.182 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V (EC) at 650 °C. Efficient triple-conduction (H + /O 2− /e − ) is vital for high-performance reversible protonic ceramic cells (R-PCCs), yet the underlying transport mechanisms and their specific impacts on electrode kinetics remain elusive. In this work, we employ a “functional modularization” strategy to engineer a BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3−δ -Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 1.95 -LaCoO 3 (BZCY-GDC-LCO) triple-phase composite air electrode using commercially available precursors. The synergistic effects and individual roles of the conducting species in optimizing electrochemical kinetics were systematically investigated. The optimized BZCY-GDC-LCO electrode (1:1:1 mass ratio) exhibits excellent chemical compatibility, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and a well-distributed triple-phase boundary. Consequently, it achieves a low polarization resistance of 0.141 Ω·cm 2 at 650 °C and demonstrates robust long-term stability over 216 h of operation. Single-cell tests deliver a peak power density of 0.757 W·cm −2 in fuel cell mode and a current density of 1.182 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 650 °C. Kinetic analysis reveals oxygen adsorption/dissociation as the rate-determining step, while excessive steam partial pressure inhibits oxygen transport via surface site passivation. This work provides a scalable design strategy for high-performance R-PCC air electrodes, demonstrating that superior performance and favorable techno-economic feasibility can be achieved using conventional materials. Janus Highly Fluorinated Ether: K+-Channel Activator or Anode Corrosion Trigger in High-Concentration Electrolytes for K–O2 Batteries?

Yu Zhong,Xiaojuan Chen,Xinyang Zhang,Lei Qin

The capacity and lifespan of superoxide-based potassium–oxygen batteries (POBs) are limited by the failure of the potassium (K) anode due to oxygen crossover. The high-concentration potassium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (KTFSI)/dimethoxyethane recipe enables efficient anode passivation, but its high viscosity and elevated cost necessitate the use of a highly fluorinated ether co-solvent. In this study, we elucidate the indeterminate role of fluoroether in constructing the anode passivation layer. The fluoroether participates with TFSI − anions to form a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that effectively mitigates oxygen crossover. Moreover, the fluoroether shows a Janus effect that excessive addition triggers severe K corrosion, while an optimal amount leads to a desirable SEI on the K surface. This SEI acts both as an oxygen permeation barrier and as an efficient K + -conductive channel. With a more stable environment for the K anode, a POB utilizing the KTFSI-based electrolyte delivers over 200 cycles (above 800 h) with low round-trip overpotentials and high average coulombic efficiency (98.1%) as opposed to one using the potassium hexafluorophosphate-based electrolyte that fails early. Spectroscopic analyses and theoretical simulations were utilized to elucidate the molecular-scale interactions in the electrolyte components. This study provides fundamental insights and practical strategies for the development of long-life POBs.

Uniformly Dispersed Fe Clusters on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Aerogel as a High-Performance Cathode Catalyst for Li-O2 Batteries

Hang Yu,Wenjin Song,Runxin Huang,Jiale Liu,Yanshuo Du,Di Lu,Xianxian Shi,Yufang Chen

Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are a compelling next-generation energy storage candidate owing to their ultrahigh theoretical specific energy, but their practical deployment is critically limited by sluggish cathodic oxygen reduction/evolution kinetics, severe polarization, and poor cyclability. Here, we design a composite catalyst consisting of ultrasmall iron clusters uniformly anchored on a three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon aerogel (Fe@NC). The material is synthesized via bidirectional freeze-drying followed by high-temperature reduction carbonization using chitosan, cellulose nanocrystals, and zinc acetate; sublimation of zinc during pyrolysis effectively suppresses iron aggregation, yielding highly dispersed Fe0 clusters of ~10 nm while preserving the aerogel’s hierarchical porous architecture rich in pyridinic and pyrrolic N species. Electrochemical tests show that Fe@NC delivers a deep-discharge specific capacity of 18,000 mAh/g, substantially outperforming pristine carbon aerogel and commercial Ketjen black, and maintains stable cycling over 280 cycles at 500 mAh/g. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses confirm that Fe@NC promotes uniform, fine-particle Li2O2deposition without pore blockage and enables its complete reversible decomposition upon charging, effectively mitigating electrode passivation. This work demonstrates that the synergistic combination of carbon aerogel mass-transport benefits and iron cluster catalytic activity provides a viable, scalable route to high-performance Li-O2battery cathodes.

Entrapped Gas Bubbles as O2 Sink and Source for Reactive Oxygen Species Production in Surface Water and Groundwater Interactions

Chang Ge,Yijie Yang,Qizheng Cai,Zheng Fang,Heng Dai,Man Tong,Songhu Yuan

Surface water–groundwater interaction zones are recognized as hotspots for reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Entrapped gas bubbles formed due to water table fluctuations are important sinks and sources of dissolved oxygen (DO), whereas their influence on ROS production remains unknown. Here, we use column experiments to simulate surface water–groundwater interactions and quantitatively investigate the role of entrapped gas bubbles in the spatiotemporal distributions of DO and H2O2. During surface water recharge, gas bubbles act as O2 sinks, which uptake O2 from DO in the infiltrated surface water and thus restrict O2 penetration and the resultant H2O2 production. For subsequent groundwater discharge, the O2 stored in gas bubbles serves as a DO source for groundwater, which promotes H2O2 production. Cycles of groundwater discharge and surface water recharge experiments support the fact that the restriction and promotion effects induced by gas bubbles persist across recharge–discharge cycles. Reactive transport modeling reveals that the peak concentration and distribution area of H2O2 during surface water recharge decrease with the increase in the degree of gas saturation, but they increase during groundwater discharge. These findings highlight the previously overlooked dual roles of entrapped gas bubbles in ROS production and distribution under fluctuating hydrological regimes.

Realizing ultra long-cycle stability and reversibility for Li-O2 batteries with electron mobility modulated NiAl LDH@Cu2S heterostructure

Rouyan Guo,Congcong Dang,Yiping Liu,Guangqi Zhang,Lingti Kong,Liancheng Zhao,Liming Gao

Developing an efficient and highly catalytic cathode is crucial to the advancement of rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries for utilizing their high theoretical energy density. However, due to the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen-involved reactions, the problems of short lifespan and large overpotential prevent their widely practical applications. Thus, cathodes are designed to enhance the adsorption capacity for oxygen and modulate the electron mobility for Li-O 2 batteries. Herein, NiAl layered double hydroxide (LDH)@Cu 2 S heterostructure with extremely large specific surface area and numerous exposed active sites is designed, combining snowflake-shaped Cu 2 S and dispersed two-dimensional layered NiAl LDH. Excitingly, NiAl LDH@Cu 2 S cathode exhibited a large specific discharge capacity of 14,519 mAh g -1 at a current density of 100 mA g -1 and prolonged cycle life up to 275 cycles at 300 mA g -1 with a cut-off capacity of 600 mAh g -1 , accompanied by a low discharge overpotential of 0.14 V at the first cycle. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the excellent electrochemical performance stems from the optimized adsorption energy of the NiAl LDH@Cu 2 S structure for reactants and intermediate products, which reduces the energy barrier of discharge/recharge process. Therefore, benefited from the modulation of electron mobility and the promoted adsorption of oxygen, NiAl LDH@Cu 2 S heterojunction can display remarkable cycle stability and reversibility as the cathode catalyst, suggesting great application prospects for enhanced Li-O 2 batteries.

Suppressing the Redox Shuttling Effect Based on the Anion Trapping Composite Separator Enhances the Performance of Li-O2 Batteries

Azhagar Samy,Raja Palani,Yi-Shiuan Wu,She-Huang Wu,Jeng-Kuei Chang,Arshid Numan,Rajan Jose,Chun-Chen Yang

Rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are at the forefront of energy storage technology. Yet, they face critical challenges, including poor capacity, high overpotential at the oxygen cathode, inefficient lithium utilization, oxygen crossover, and the troublesome growth of lithium dendrites. This study provides an innovative solution using a graphene nanosheet (GNS) composite nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) (NiFe2O4@GNS) catalyst and ZIF-8 particles decorated glass fiber (GF) (ZIF-8@GF) separator. Remarkably, the in situ grown ZIF-8@GF composite separator boosts higher ionic conductivity (∼2.87 × 10–3 S cm–1) and transport number (tLi+ ∼ 0.58). The modified catalyst and separator performed significantly better than the unmodified analogs in terms of specific capacity and cycling stability. In short, the device using the ZIF-8@GF separator and NiFe2O4@GNS catalyst goes up to 500 cycles without any charge polarization at 300 mA·g–1 and 500 mAh·g–1. In contrast, the corresponding cycle number for the cell with an unmodified separator even using the modified catalyst is ∼209 cycles with high charge polarization. These studies reveal that the modified separator effectively minimizes oxygen and I–/I3– redox crossover, captures anions, accelerates lithium-ion transport, and prevents the harmful intermediates (like O2– or LiO2), which can drastically degrade the organic electrolyte. Furthermore, the insulating characteristics of the ZIF-8@GF membrane deter direct electron transport to ZIF-8 nanoparticles during lithium peroxide formation, thus ensuring uninterrupted access to catalytic anion trapping sites.

Deposition of robust superhydrophobic film with enhanced insulating performance by APTES/O2 assisted Ar/HMDSO atmospheric pressure plasma jet

Xinglei Cui,Zhonglian Li,Yizhuo Wang,Long Li,Zhi Fang

The weather resistance capability of insulating materials, i.e. surface performance including hydrophobicity, mechanical and electrical strength under diverse weather conditions, is considered of critical importance for high-voltage devices working outdoors. In this study, atmospheric pressure plasma jet with Ar/Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) assisted by γ-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and oxygen (O 2 ) addition is employed to deposit a robust insulating film with good weather resistance capability on the surface of Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The gas flow rates of Si-containing precursors (HMDSO/APTES) and auxiliary gas (O 2 ) are varied to elucidate the correlation between precursor ratio and film performances. The mechanism for robust film deposition is explored by investigating reactions of active particles deduced from discharge characteristics, surface physical morphology and chemical composition variations. The results indicate that APTES plays a pivotal role in the enhancement of the film mechanical strength, while O 2 can further improve both mechanical and electrical performances. A robust superhydrophobic film is deposited, inhibiting the reduction in water contact angle by 81.6 % after the tape peel test compared with the film deposited by Ar/HMDSO system, and the flashover voltage is increased by 38.2 % with the optimal HMDSO/APTES/O 2 ratio of 7:5:1. The simultaneous improvements of the film hydrophobic, mechanical and electrical performances are contributed by crosslinking of silicone deposits and the introduction of -NH₂ groups. The weather resistance capability of the insulating material is effectively enhanced, providing guidance for outdoor insulation applications.

Dual defect regulation of BiOCl halogen layer enables photocatalytic O2 activation into singlet oxygen for refractory aromatic pollutant removal

Yandong Sun,Weiguang Han,Fangyuan Zhang,Hui Li,Ziqi Zhang,Xue Zhang,Boxiong Shen,Sheng-Qi Guo,Tianyi Ma

The generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) based on photocatalytic activation O 2 is considered to have important application prospects in purifying refractory organic pollutants in water. However, the uncertain dual pathway transformation of activated O 2 severely limits the generation of 1 O 2 . In this work, we show a robust BiOCl with dual defects (adjacent I-substitution defect and Cl vacancy) in halogen layer for the selective activation of O 2 to generate 1 O 2 . Combining experiments and theoretical calculations, we confirm that dual defects are beneficial in optimizing band structures, improving carrier separation efficiency, and promoting O 2 adsorption and activation. More importantly, it is confirmed that dual defects can directionally convert O 2 into 1 O 2 by increasing the thermodynamic conversion energy barrier of non- 1 O 2 conversion pathways and serving as a necessary site for 1 O 2 generation with dual functions of oxidation and reduction. Applying dual defect modified BiOCl to the removal of refractory aromatic pollutants in water, it is found that it has efficient and stable photocatalytic degradation efficiency and broad environmental adaptability. This work not only provides in-depth insights into the mechanism of photocatalytic activation of O 2 to selective produce 1 O 2 , but also lays the foundation for further development of highly active photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy conversion.

Comparison of plasma-activated saline prepared with plasma gases with different N2/O2 ratios activated by gliding arc discharge

Pengyu Zhao,Yikang Jia,Sihong Ma,Rui Zhang,Kaiyu Li,Tianyi Song,Jianbao Zheng,Jingyao Zhang,Li Guo,Dingxin Liu,Xiaohua Wang,Mingzhe Rong

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) presents a significant threat due to the multiple resistance to antibiotics, leading to severe and challenging-to-treat infections. Plasma-activated saline (PAS) prepared by plasma gases, could efficiently inactivate various pathogenic bacteria including both sensitive and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, the PAS was prepared by plasma gases with different ratios of N2 and O2 activated by gliding arc discharge. First, the gaseous reactive species in the plasma gases were compared, revealing that the highest levels of NOx including NO2 and N2O5 were generated in the gases with the N2/O2 ratios of 4:6, 5:5, and 6:4. Subsequently, the PAS prepared by the two plasma-activated gases at the N2/O2 ratios of 5:5 and 6:4 exhibited the strongest inactivation effects on both planktic MRSA and biofilms. Furthermore, the aqueous reactive species in the PAS exhibited varied change trends with the increasing N2/O2 ratios. Additionally, ultraviolet spectroscopy combined with the probe of N, N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine was applied for the detection of O2NOO− in the PAS, and the levels of O2NOO− in the PAS were positively correlated with the inactivation effects. Moreover, the PAS induced varying levels of nitration modification on the soluble proteins in MRSA cells, which were related to the intensities of O2NOO− in the PAS. This study regulated the reactive species in the PAS through gas composition and explored the inactivation mechanism of the PAS, providing a new strategy to promote the preparation efficiency of plasma-activated solutions for biomedical applications.

Preparation of Anderson-type CoMo6-2NH2@ECOF for highly active catalysis on aerobic oxidative desulfurization of fuel under O2

Xue Lu,Jingfang Li,Liye Liang,Guangming Li

Deep desulfurization with high-efficiency is imperia for environmental demands with increasing stringent standard of sulfur content in fuels. To develop high efficiency heterogeneous catalyst for aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) of fuel, an Anderson-type CoMo 6 -2NH 2 (POM) as active site, which was considered to be very effective in catalyzing the activation of O 2 , was successfully anchored on the sub-stoichiometric ECOF as a carrier by Schiff-base condensation reaction between –NH 2 groups in CoMo 6 -2NH 2 and –CHO groups in ECOF. The anchoring of CoMo 6 -2NH 2 on ECOF by covalent bond resulted in the heterogenization of CoMo 6 -2NH 2 enabled CoMo 6 -2NH 2 @ECOF to be recyclable during the AODS process. When CoMo 6 -2NH 2 @ECOF was applied as catalyst for AODS of fuel with surfactant (OTAC) under O 2 , it exhibited excellent catalytic activity with almost 100 % removal rates under 95 °C for 6 h. Moreover, the catalyst can be recycled 7 times without significant loss of catalytic activity. Further, the structure-activity relationship was investigated and the reaction mechanism of AODS of fuel was verified by ESR, XPS analysis and selective quenching experiments.

Synergistic effect of molecular sieving and adsorption inhibition in MOF-based mixed matrix membranes for efficient O2/N2 separation

Zixian Qin,Yuxiu Sun,Zhengqing Zhang,Chenxu Zhang,Chi Tang,Chenxu Geng,Zhihua Qiao

Oxygen/nitrogen (O 2 /N 2 ) separation is of great importance but faces huge challenges owing to their similar molecular size and close polarity. In this work, we construct a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) based mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for efficient O 2 /N 2 separation by using ZIF-8 as the sieving filler along with surface modification of o-carborane (o-CB) to strengthen selective N 2 adsorption fixation as well as polymer-filler interfaces. Markedly, the o-CB on the outer surface of ZIF-8 not only affords the requisite interfacial compatibility in molecular sieving MMMs, but also increases the diffusion difference between O 2 and N 2 by the preferential adsorption with N 2 molecules. This synergistic effect of molecular sieving and adsorption inhibition achieves efficient O 2 /N 2 diffusion differential separation. As expected, the optimal membrane with o-CB-ZIF-8 loading of 35 wt% exhibits an O 2 permeability of 796.5 Barrer and a mixed O 2 /N 2 selectivity of 8.9 with O 2 /N 2 (20:80, vol.) mixtures, exceeding the latest 2015 upper bound limits. Moreover, the according membrane module with o-CB-ZIF-8 loading of 20 wt% also displays moderate O 2 permeability of 391.7 Barrer and O 2 /N 2 selectivity of 5.5 under pressure of 1 bar. This work may provide a feasible platform for designing high-performance MOF-based membranes in air separations.

Facile synthesis of zeolite catalyst from lithium slag efficiently activates peroxymonosulfate for tetracycline degradation: •O2- and the electron transfer

Yi Chen,Haolan Zhang,Siyu Hu,Jiaxin Zhang,Shiruo Zhang,Qing He,Qingyue Luo,Jinchuan Gu

Iron is the most suitable candidate for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for organic degradation. To realize the effective separation and recycling of iron catalysts, it is urgent to explore a low-cost and excellent supporter. In this study, a zeolite catalyst (CAN) with both supporter and catalyst functions was synthesized in one step using lithium slag (LS, containing iron), and used to degrade tetracycline (TC) wastewater. The results showed that the electron transfer of iron and sulfur in CAN promotes the decomposition of PMS. The CAN/PMS system exhibited great removal efficiency (89.5 %, 0.083 min −1 ) and relatively lower activation energy (15.31 kJ/mol) toward TC. And • O 2 - plays a crucial role in the degradation. The CAN also represented great catalytic stability and reusability. This study revealed a new approach for the synthesis of high efficiency and low-cost catalysts and the tetracycline degradation.
